The Lupus Foundation of america says while they support the study of these drugs to treat coronavirus they want people who already take them to have access and kaiser said there are other good alternatives for people on these drugs were arthritis and psoriasis among other issues but the foundation says there are no alternatives for many people with lupus and the increase in lupus related issues will put more pressure on Healthcare Providers during this pandemic kaiser expects manufacturers to ramp up production the next few weeks to meet this increased demand. For now people experience homelessness and they are critical risk of contracting coronavirus which is a problem some state and local leaders are trying to tackle but limited resources and supply shortages are adding a very big challenge. Ktvus brooks jarosz has more. Reporter everybody is talking about it and some are really worried about it. Stress may be an understatement for those is facing homelessness especially with fears of covid 19. There is nothing on the shelves in the stores and we need it out here. Medical experts say those helpless feelings can compromise immune systems and with lack of sleep and poor nutrition it putgreater risk. They gave us the packets and they gave us Hand Sanitizer. In berkeley the City Health Department quickly took action providing maps to washing stations. I did not know they would care enough to make sure that we were okay. Going tent to tent spreading the message. This is the first time i have opened it. Inside handouts with precautions, symptoms and a plan of action in case someone gets sick. They are concerned about our health and this camp been they are encouraging sanitizing, social distancing and improving daily hygiene. Here is where the hand washing station is the for the 108,000 unhoused homeless in california this at times can see mike a luxury and now a lifesaver. There is no medicine as powerful as hygiene is a when we have this other crisis overlaid on top of it existing severe homelessness crisis will see tragic effects. This doctor directs the center for vulnerable relations at ucsf as she says in San Francisco know when experiencing homelessness has confirmed to have coronavirus but many could be infected and they just havent been tested. Creates this impossible situation San Francisco set up dozens of handwashing stations, bathrooms or pitstops dealt with hygiene and the city has secured at least 30 rvs to separate or quarantined entire and camas if infection occurred on the streets the other big risk is homeless shelters often packed with people that eat together common areas. That only elevates the chance of spreading coronavirus and that is exactly what we do not want and if infection were to get into the community it would be at high risk of spreading National Data shows 560,000 americans were homeless on a single night last year but when you add those with Substance Abuse disorders and Mental Illness the challenge becomes more complex. We will make sure we secure the resources to get people off the streets quickly and into those units, seven counties and now have already secured beds for homeless. Governor gavin newsom once 51,000 hotel rooms to house those that are homeless but the doctor says in some cases it could do more harm than good, especially for those with alcohol or drug addictions may violate quarantine rules the worst thing to do right now is we do not want to take people that are outside not infected and forcing them to move into enclosed spaces, that would be a disaster if people are outside and they are safe, we do not want to force them to move if they are not infected because it could be placing them in harms way. This is currently where i reside. Some say they have researched and learned about the dues and i dont have health officers. But others feel forgotten i am worried. Despite new sanitation stations, replenishment and routine cleanups in oakland do not appear to happen often but this leaves them to take matters into their own hands and with roughly 50 of the homeless over the age of 50 safer spaces are essential. We need to insist places be provided for those who are homeless to protect their health and the health of everyone we come into contact with. Oakland City Council President wants to get those most at risk off the streets and two hotels are secured by the Oakland Airport with the help of Alameda County but progress has been slow because of medical staff, laundry, food and security have to be set up first. We really need help and we will catch this virus and nobody helps. And for now many on the streets are trying to keep to themselves hoping that someone will soon listen. Brooks jarosz ktvu fox 2 news vid coming up countries around the world are all trying to address the pandemic and what the latest numbers are in italy, spain and elsewhere can tell you about the coronavirus been and getting more Hand Sanitizers for those who need it most. I am looking this way and i see the sun is shining through the trees and it is a welcome sight. I like the rain but i also like the sun and if youre going to the moraga Farmers Market a little bit of sunshine would be nice to have. Absolutely and we do not have any windows in the studio so im glad you can peer out those windows and rosemary is at home and i would imagine you look at your front door a few times today, how about that forecast . Good morning to you and the roadways are slick out my doors at the moment and nothing falling from the sky. Looks like we lost rosemary and we will check with her and just a little bit dizzy on sunday will shape up and what the work week ahead looks like in the meantime want to talk with the new numbers we have gotten overnight which gives us an idea of how the coronavirus pandemic looks worldwide. We have numbers from Johns Hopkins university to give an overall look around the lobe and nearly 680,000 people are now infected with the virus worldwide. More than 31,000 people have died. Globally 145,000 people have recovered which is good news but staggering years from two hardhit countries there are more than 92,000 confirmed cases in italy. And the death toll has climbed above 10,000. And in spain more than 70,000 people have been infected with more than 6500 deaths. The number of virus cases in spain has exploded the past two weeks and the countrys Health System is overwhelmed and is on the brink of collapse. Infected patients are being left four days in wheelchairs because there are just no beds available and that some doctors and nurses in spain are using garbage bags as protective medical gear. The death toll has climbed to more than 1000 in the United Kingdom and the lead of the uks Health System is predicting there will be more than 20,000 deaths in the region before the pandemic is open and over and british Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the lockdown could continue for month and the first world leader to test positive. The cdc has issued a travel advisory for the new york region. The agency is urging residents in Domestic Travel for the next two weeks and the advisory doesnt apply to employees of Public Health professionals, trucking, Financial Services and food supply workers in early saturday afternoon resident trump said he was considering a quarantine for the area but offered no details on how his administration would enforce it. Now today Santa Clara Countys board of supervisors president will tour the county fairgrounds to learn more about the effort to stop the spread of the virus fema trailers will be used to house homeless during the pandemic and currently there is a drive through coronavirus central test center on that fairgrounds in Santa Clara County and chavez will tour these trailers and take a look at how the Testing Centers are running. A drug critical in treating lupus is being used as a potential treatment in the fight against coronavirus which is good news for coronavirus patients, but it is leading to a global shortage of that drug. Ktvus Sara Zendehnam joins us live to talk about that because that shortage is leaving an oakland woman with a very limited supply and it is so tough as we see this happening as new and current drugs are being investigated to help fight coronavirus. That is right, very stressful for Leah Romanelli and a lot of people that have lupus and these other illnesses treated by these drugs. Now leah is immunocompromised and she relies on this medication to keep her healthy after being diagnosed with lupus a few years ago and she says she takes hydroxychloroquine to keep flares from happening but now hydroxychloroquine and laura quinn are two medications being used as potential treatment for coronavirus which is causing the global shortage according to kaiser meeting people like leah are not getting their normal supplies and she says she always gets a 90 day supply of her medication from kaiser but now she can only get a 14 day supply kaiser said they will do this until supplies matches the significantly increasing demand and while kaiser is contacting patients and trying to convert them to alternative medications leah said she was not told about the change in supply until she went to pick up her prescription and she is frustrated she was not given advance notice despite her concerns she says she understands the need for the drug. My heart goes out to anyone who takes this medication from anyone who depends on it. I just hope they can come up with a solution soon. In a statement a kaiser spokesperson said quote if we do not take steps to mitigate the shortage we will all face the real possibility of running out of these drugs in the next few weeks. The Lupus Foundation of america says while they support the study of these drugs to treat coronavirus they want people that already take them to have access and kaiser says there other good alternatives for people on these drugs for arthritis and psoriasis among other issues but the foundation said there is no alternatives for many people with lupus and if an increase with lupus related issues puts more pressure on Healthcare Providers during this pandemic. According to kaiser they expect drug manufacturers to ramp up production in the next few weeks to meet the increased demand. Reporting live Sara Zendehnam ktvu fox 2 news. Doesnt in the north bay are taking advantage of a drive through food giveaway program, yesterday the San Francisco Marin Food Bank organizes first drivethrough giveaway in the parking lot of its san rafael warehouse and the food bank that volunteers placed food boxes directly into the clients trunks so there was no persontoperson contact. Spirit it is super rewarding to know that we could not possibly make a difference and a majority people like to do things that are functional and artistic and set to take this hobby and do something that could possibly save peoples lives, i think any 3d printer hobbyist i know would jump at a chance to do it. There is a strict process they put into place to get the masks from point a to point b and one that puts safety first and everyone including our crew Wearing Masks and gloves and this area is known as the print farm but they have a bunch of 3d printers turning out top and bottom pieces for the face shields around the clock. While the 3d printing of parts on site, shipped parts are vetted and there is a meticulous disinfection of the parts, drying, laser cutting the plastic shields, cleaning them and packaging of the components before being sent to the frontline medical staff that need them the most where fighting an invisible enemy and with that people are stressed and there is anxiety because you cannot see it and these shields are wonderful they are a layer of protection that we all need. And that is why allen plans to move full steam ahead with this project and he will keep going until the need subsides. The delivery person puts on fresh gloves in order to unpack and placed the fresh food on the doorstep and we leave and alert them that we are here and let them know that they have gotten their food as we do as much as we can to make it a safe and easy as possible so there is a 160 food minimum, excuse me an order minimum, but you can do this in the freezer food and there is groceries and alcohol and it is easy to get a lot of food that will last you a while is not just for dinner tonight, you can order three or four dinners for 160 and have it delivered. It is food for a week. So if youre part of a church or temple or Mosque Community or even a school community, we will do one day for you every two weeks where the Delivery Charges waived because it is normally a 25 or 30 Delivery Charge but we will waive the charge if you get your whole Community Involved and then we can just drop off the whole community all at one time and that saves time for us and it makes it more affordable for you. Are you up and running right now and is it viable and can you continue to do this . Are you making enough to keep it going . Were making enough to pay for people to work, i have a pretty Large Business and so were still hemorrhaging 50,000 a month. But at least i have my team intact and i can pay as many of them as possible to keep working so that as things adjust and shift there will still be a team to move forward and luckily i have a line of credit with bank of america and i have resources to keep going for the time being but the more work we get the more i can employ my people and the more of them can keep going to pay their bills. That is terrific i and imagine youre worried about some of your restaurant friends and i have heard one in three california restaurants could close unless they get relief as well. Have you chatted with some of your friends and what are they doing . I have so many friends in this business and it isnt good. Some are doing delivery and takeout but restaurants or barely profitable before all of this happened the Restaurant Industry was under so much stress. So if you are doing half the business or one quarter of the business takeout you used to do youre still hemorrhaging money. I feel for my restaurant friends. It is even harder for them i would say than it is for me right now for sure. Im not sure what will happen. Please support your local restaurants and caterers.
