Ktvus Sara Zendehnam joins us live from home and good morning. Reporter good morning frank and i am sure you remember all of the videos and photos of last weekend or so many people crowded the popular outdoor destinations here in the bay area. Officials want to avoid the same thing happening this weekend which is why state parks and beaches all over the bay area are closed to the public or limiting access. This is a video of Rockaway Beach and pacifica and the north and south parking lot are closed and caution tape and barriers are keeping people out and parks and beaches in San Mateo County had a Record Number of visitors last weekend which made it impossible for people to follow social distancing rules so 23 parks in that county and a lot of beach parking lots at Half Moon Bay and pacifica are closed, east bay regional is closing 20 of its 73 parks and parking your picnic areas until at least april 30 trails will be open to walk or bike on land trust public Access Properties are closed and solano at in San Francisco marina green, baker and ocean beaches and fort clemson are all closed. If the park is grounded or the parking lot is full go home as people are dying all over the United States of this virus and Everybody Needs to do their part. We do have a list of some of these closures on ktvu. Com and click on the coronavirus tab for that information. Thank you sarah did the city of santa clara is now transform the Convention Center there into a temporary hospital in response to this coronavirus pandemic. Yesterday members of the California National guard began setting up dozens of beds at the Santa Clara Convention center and the big building will soon serve as a temporary hospital for as many as 250 coronavirus patients. What you are seeing here is one side where you have either males or females and in between the rows we would have nursing stations. Patients who are covid 19 positive well enough to leave the hospital but do not have otherwise a safe place to return and come here for ongoing care. The goal is to free up hospital beds for the expected surge in virus patients in Santa Clara County and Health Experts say that could begin as early as next week. Health agencies in the east bay are preparing a high school is another temporary shelter for coronavirus patients that they chose the campus of Alhambra High School because it is close to the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in part and medical workers at the school site would treat those patients not critically ill and beds and medical equipment and other supplies are set to arrive in a few days it and in San Francisco three new sites are set to open next week and they will be located in the outer districts like outer sunset, chinatown and near oracle parking will be open to the public but those who want to be tested only to have a doctors referral, and First Responders will be given priority at all three sites. San francisco leaders will open must county center west to help house and isolate the citys Homeless Population during this pandemic and the city is expected to start relocating some Homeless People from Navigation Centers and shelters as early as next week. There will be access to restrooms and showers and maintaining 6 feet of distance from one another. We will use mosconi wes as a place to thin out the shelters so we can have laces where people who are living in complicated settings like shelters can be spread out a lot more. So this will play an Important Role for that. Housing at the center will be on a referral basis only and it will not be a Dropin Center and officials also have contracts with hotels in the city to provide 300 rooms for the homeless and it is in negotiation for some 3000 more good meanwhile governor gavin newsom is granted clemency to 26 california inmates, the governor pardoned five inmates and commuted the sentences of 21 others and Governor Newsom said the claimant these were been processed before the coronavirus outbreak but he says he did consider the Public Health impact when making those decisions each inmates health, job plans and housing arrangements were all taken into consideration. June 2 is the election calendar half a dozen states who have postponed their primaries to that day, it is looking like it could be the next big super tuesday. Ktvus greg lee shows us how a vote by mail can play a huge role and much bigger role in both june and november. Reporter the primary election calendar grinding to a halt due to the coronavirus pandemic spin it is an unprecedented time where we are facing so many unknowns that we are having to start from scratch and think about how to run elections. Spirit states that havent voted scrabbling to come up with solutions and june 2 is a significant date because six states of delaware, pennsylvania, connecticut, indiana, maryland and rhode island postpone primaries joining five others already scheduled. We will see frankly a triage approach, i have hybrid approach , for these remain primaries where we will see hopefully an increase outreach and actually production of a vote by mail and probably and hopefully a longer timeframe for early voting Jessica Levinson at Loyola Law School said we are likely to see a range of solutions and some of the states and counties have proposed expanding vote by mail or moving to all vote by mail of the voter Rights Groups said without a choice some are in danger of being disenfranchised there is a fairly significant portion of people who need assistance and so the ability to be able to go someplace to cast a ballot is important. These voting Rights Groups welcome expanding vote by mail but want to see more time for early voting and ensuring polling worker and voter safety and a senate bill proposal calls for 3 million to help states do just this. The National Vote at Home Institute works with legislators to enhance vote by mail but supports options for all voters we know how this will work and just making sure that Election Officials have what they need as early as possible to be able to have the most options available to them. While the immediate focus is on the primaries many believe it is time to Start Talking about possible solutions for the november general election. This is the moment for county registrars and state Election Administrators to talk to each other as much as possible and talk to those who already have the infrastructure in place. And adopt some sort of hybrid. We understand that californias secretary of state is already made with election experts to discuss how to handle the november general election, wrigley ktvu fox 2 news. Other areas seeing a double digit double digit increase south bay leaders are calling this a critical period in the fight against covid19. When doctors detected the spread of the virus, it had probably already been circulating for some time. Since 80 of people with the disease experience very mild symptoms, it went undetected until people at risk started getting seriously ill. The county says it is imperative that the public follow social distancing standards. Right now its really not important if you want to stay healthy to be counting numbers and trying to look at curves and looking at projections. Whats really, really important is to stay at home, stay away from other people. The county points to the example of wuhan, china where the epicenter of the outbreak was put under lockdown and the number of cases finally began to decline. Thats following the latest wave of park and beach closures here in the bay area, all part of the growing effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus. And ktvus Sara Zendehnam joins us live at home with more on that. Reporter good morning. Some counties in the bay area are being more strict than others but every single county has at least some rules in place to encourage people to practice social distancing. San mateo county is one thats not taking any chances after what happened last weekend. Officials say parks and beaches in that county had a Record Number of visitors, which made it impossible for people to follow social distancing rules. So 23 parks in the county and a lot of beach parking lots in Half Moon Bay and pacifica are closed. That includes Rockaway Beach in pacifica. We have a list of closures on our website, ktvu. Com, just click on the coronavirus tab. Reporting live, Sara Zendehnam, ktvu fox 2 news. Today President Trump will travel to virginia to see the u. S. Naval hospital ship comfort as it set sails up north for new york city. Visit comes a day after the president signed that 2 trillion coronavirus recovery bill. And he also invoked the defense production act. That will allow Companies LikeGeneral Motors to start producing muchneeded ventilators. This invocation of the dpa should demonstrate clearly to all that we will not hesitate to use the full authority of the federal government. The president also announced in the next 100 days the government will produce or buy 100,000 ventilators needed for the most sick patients and will increase testing here in the u. S. Former oil super tanker that became the u. S. Navys largest floating hospital docked at the port of los angeles this morning. Governor newsom was among those on hand when the usns mercy sailed into port yesterday following its trip to san diego. The Navy Hospital ship will be able to treat as many as 1000 noncoronavirus patients so that will free upl hospitals to handle the expected surge in virus cases. We are in the process now of having secured roughly 4,000 beds of some type to prepare for the surge, which we believe will start taking shape in the next week or two based upon our modeling. The usns mercy has 0 beds, 1200 office rooms. The first patients could arrive at the ship as early as today. Governor newsom also issued an executive order that puts in place an Eviction Moratorium for renters affected by the coronavirus and thats through may 31st. Now, tenants are required to submit in writing a request to landlords to defer payment. Thats within seven days of when that rent is actually due. Now, the governor says rent is still owed and must be paid in a timely manner. But this builds on newsoms previous executive order authorizing local governments to halt eviction for renters impacted by the pandemic. Mountain view residents rallied yesterday for stronger protections after they fell the emergency plan fell short. Protesters drove around city hall at the same time council was meeting. They want to know how long people will have to pay back rent once the evacuation moratorium is lifted. Residents in Mountain View are asking the city to set theirs at around 180 days. We are also looking at the City CouncilsCurrent Program for rent relief, which would be a way for residents to be able to apply for some kind of monetary assistance to make the next months rent. Members of the Mountain ViewHousing Justice Coalition are calling for the city to help protect mobile home residents since the countys emergency ordinance did not include them. There are over 1100 mobile homes within city limits. A check of weather. I commuted in and it got wet. Rosemary said you poked your head out of the door and maybe ill go for a run, or maybe not, right . I was looking at the time thinking i could use a fresh cup of coffee. Isnt this when i do a coffee run for everybody around the studio . It is. Im missing you guys. Miss you too. Latte coming up. Ill have it delivered. Outside our doors at this hour it is a wet one and perhaps you are sipping on a nice warm cup of coffee or perhaps tea. A wet start to the day and it is widespread. This light shower activity will be on and off not only for your bay area saturday but a next level will come in and bring us rainfall for sunday. Right now temperatures in the mid40s in and around areas like santa rosa, will call for 44. 47 in San Francisco, 50 in oakland, 47 in livermore and 48 san jose. Temperatures are warmer this morning with that added humidity, and the cloud cover. 15 degrees warmer in napa. Oakland youre up by five, san jose up by seven. Looking at some of the rainfall amounts. We have actually started to accumulate some rain in the last just six hours or so. Oakland reporting 0. 1 inch so far. Calm at Half Moon Bay, calm in livermore as well as heyward. You can see that rainfall we are talking about, into the north bay getting a little bit of a break but still areas like guerneville as well as petaluma, novato, around American Canyon, vallejo, napa, san helena as well as our bridges from the richmond, san rafael to the golden gate, bay bridge, all under green right now. San jose, morgan hill, gilroy, highway 101 is a wet commute as well as over towards the Santa Cruz Mountains as well as the coastline. Sierra, tahoe still dry at the moment but the sierra will pick up on snow a little bit later today, snow levels will be dropping. As far as rainfall amounts for us, by the end of the weekend, anywhere from quarter inch to half inch of rainfall. We do dry out tomorrow and then we are dry for the week ahead. Better details on what you can expect as we head into your afternoon with temperatures and that warmup coming our way coming up in just a little bit. Sounds good, rosemary, thanks. Coming up, local governments in the bay area in and around the country are bracing for an influx of covid 19 patients. How city leaders in santa clara are trying to boost hospital capacity. We will tell you about a fundraiser underway to buy powered air purified respirators for healthcare workers in the east bay who are working on the front lines in the fight against coronavirus. Mornings on 2 will be right back. A number of hospitals and a number could be facing a shortage of critical supplies. In fact, we know those shortages are in place right now. So you got nurses at Highland Hospital in oakland who have organized a fundraiser to raise money to buy powered air purifying respirators which are essential in handling severe cases of coronavirus. The director says it is welcoming any and all donations. Joining us now is hannah culbert, a registered nurse at Highland Hospital. Thank you so much for joining us and thank you for all that you are doing on the front lines there keeping everyone safe and treating the patients at risk and who are suffering. Thanks for joining us. How are you guys holding up . Since we have had all these donations, it helped a lot with our anxiety here. I feel like everybody has come together, especially as a community. We feel so much love, its helped with anxiety. Yeah, tell us the situation. Paint us the picture of really whats happening. Because we have seen stories of the shortages and homemade masks and people doing whatever they can to protect themselves, healthcare workers specifically as they are trying to help other people. Can you tell us what its like at work at the hospital . Its very theres a lot of anxiety because we werent quite prepared, like all the hospitals in the bay area, we werent prepared with a lot of tappers that you need for intubation, and in other places they are doing intubations so you need to have a tapper. It caused a lot of anxiety. And right now the hospital is the census is low because people are staying home, but we all know that the surge is coming. Its only a matter of time. Exactly. Tell us how these you know, for people who dont work in healthcare, how these powered air purified respirators work. How expensive they are. How many did you have on hand, how many will you need to make sure you feel like i dont think anyone can be prepared enough and i think even in new york they are saying, you know, we havent hit our peak in terms of the apex of what we know that is coming, that determines supply. But tell us how it works, why this intubation is so dangerous and how many you really want to be able to purchase or have on ha so if you come into the hospital and you cant breathe and you need a ventilator to help you breathe, when we stick the tube down your throat, it lets out in the air the virus, which spreads on your skin, it goes into your lungs. Definitely a lot of ways it can be transmitted. And with the tapper, it provides a shield over our face and it also pushes in air, so therefore we are not getting exposed to any of the outside environment. And so basically during the procedure. Now, how many are available in terms of right now . We dont have the surge yet and obviously the concern is when the surge of patients comes, there wouldnt be enough. How many are you guys trying to purchase and tell me about the gofundme and the idea to set it up and its been pretty well received. Yes. One of our lovely coworkers, her sister was concerned about how many papers that we had into the hospital and she started this gofundme that nobody knew until we saw it and everybody was thankful that somebody was reaching out for us to help us. So because of that, it spread so it wasnt even started by a nurse, right . It was started by a friend who just said, im seeing what you guys are going through and i really want to help . One of the residents sister was concerned. Liz miller was concerned and she started the gofundme for us. How much does each one of these cost . Anywhere between 1800 to 2000. Wow. But you also have how did it spread . Through social media was a big thing, and just people sending it to their family who sent it to their friends and it quickly overone day went up to 12, 13,000, quickly. Thats amazing. Keep in mind, they are a couple thousand dollars, you know it still doesnt buy probably as many as you would like. We have been really lucky. Its moved up to 40,000, which is way beyond our goal, so we were able to get 15 papers for the emergency room, which is huge. Thats amazing. Are you going to continue this fundraiser . Do you keep upping the total . As you need more and as the need continues to grow, are you and one last question before i let you go, are you worried that there is not enough out there now that you have the money to buy them . Are you going to be able to get them . We had a lot of nurses got together and did a lot of research to find out who was still providing them, so we have 15 on our way. What we have come up with is 40,000, which i feel like is way enough to help us get to where we need, so we are going to continue to get them and wipes that we need to keep clean. Our goal is to keep us safe and keep the people that clean our rooms, keep the nurses and doctors safe and rt safe so we can go home and not spread it to our families as well. Absolutely. Absolutely. Im so glad that you got the i know so many people and we are grateful of the work that you do every single day and putting yourself at risk in order to help people. So hannah, thank you so much for joining us. A highland nurse. And thank you for everything that you and your coworkers and all the healthcare workers out there are doing. Again, thank you for everybody thats contributed. We appreciate the love that we received so much. Its such a blessing. Thank you. Such great news. Always great to hear. San franciscos normally Bustling Hotels, they are quiet. Coming up we will tell you how the cities are working with the hotels to get people affected by the coronavirus quarantined into a room. Now into the extended forecast where we are looking at dry weather and warmer weather, getting into monday, tuesday, wednesday, upper 60s to near 70 degrees. Back to you. Thank you, rosemary. Time now is 8 26. San francisco leaders are trying to lease more hotels for people that have been affected by the coronavirus. The city is beginning the first phase of the project placing those under a mandatory quarantine who have no place to go at a hotel. City hopes to also find lodging for healthcare workers, First Responders, seniors and the homeless. Fears of the coronavirus and shelterinplace orders are devastating the citys tourism and travel cities. Labor unions and city leaders want to repurpose those empty rooms. Theres only 3 to 5 of the rooms are occupied in San Francisco, which means tens of thousands of empty rooms right now. 9000 of our members work in hotels and the cuts have been deep. We see closures occurring almost on a daily basis. So well over 80 of our members in hotels are currently available. Labor unions say if hotels open for Coronavirus Response, the work would be on a volunteer basis at the regular pay. Members want Safety Training and they want to wear protective gear as well. I get it, i have done the same hike and the same walk over and over again, and it would be nice to go other places, but i think we need to kind of just take what we got close to us and appreciate that, right . Reporter of course. This is a tough time for everyone. But even if youre getting outside, right outside of your house, its better than staying inside. Just avoid those crowds. Officials are really encouraging people to explore their own communities rather than try to visit other places in the bay area. The idea is that if you have to drive somewhere to exercise, you are really going too far. Many closures were announced for this weekend in San Francisco, marin, san mateo and sonoma counties and the east bay. While some are more strict than others, every bay area county has at least some rules in place to practice social distancing at their parks and beaches. Officials in San Mateo County are putting their foot down because of the turnout they saw last weekend. Officials say parks and beaches in that county had a Record Number of visitors, which, of course, defeats the purpose of social distancing. So 23 parks in the county and a lot of beach parking lots in Half Moon Bay and pacifica are closed. That includes Rockaway Beach in pacifica. This video is from this morning. The north and south parking lots are closed. You can see barriers and tapes to keep people out. As of 5 00 p. M. Last night, all Solano County parks and Solano Land Trust public Access Properties closed. In San Francisco parking lots at the marina green, field, baker and ocean beaches and fort clemson are also closed. East bay regional closed 23 of its 73 parks and parking lots near picnic areas until at least april 30th. For now trails are open to walk or bike on. Officials hope the rules will help but they are prepared to shut down more areas to make sure people take their message seriously. We hope that that will happen. We may be able to relax some of those rules, but right now we are looking in the opposite where we may have to even increase closures. We are talking to the Health Agencies every day. Reporter we have a list of some of these closures on our website, ktvu. Com, just click on the coronavirus tab. Reporting live, Sara Zendehnam, ktvu fox 2 news. Sara, thanks. City of santa clara now transforming its Convention Center into a temporary hospital in response to the pandemic. Yesterday members of the California National guard began setting up dozens of beds at Santa Clara Convention center. The big building will soon serve as a temporary hospital for as many as 250 coronavirus patients. Youre seeing here is one side where we would have either males or females and in between the major roads here, we would have nursing stations. Patients who are covid positive who are well enough to leave the hospital but dont have otherwise a safe place to return can come here for ongoing care. The goal is to free patients Santa Clara County. Health experts say that could begin as early as next week. And in San Francisco three new Virus Testing sites have been set up. A lot of people across the country cooped up, want to get outside, maybe take a hike, make take a walk with their loved ones, keep that social distancing, but if youre here in the bay area, rosemary, its going to be wet, right . It is going to be a soggy one. Claudine, if either getting out today, make sure you have the umbrella handy. We are looking at i will have it. I will have it. Yes. Good idea. Good idea. And the rain boots for the little ones. If youre going to take that walk around the block, we do have soggy conditions in place. Light rain started falling early this morning and heres a look at all that overcast sky. With the overcast conditions, temperatures are actually a little bit warmer. The humidity helps as well. Sfo is a wet one. You can see the tarmac there is slick. San francisco right now coming in at 47 degrees. 44 in santa rosa. Upper 40s oakland, livermore and san jose, so pretty uniform with the temperatures this morning. 15 degrees warmer in napa, up by 5 over oakland as well as palo alto. Getting into the afternoon, our temperatures will remain below average for this time of year. More on that coming up in just a moment. Lets check in on the winds, generally light around the area. Little breezy in our hills but not bad for our urban spots. And heres a look at that rainfall. North bay, east bay, along the peninsula, down through the south bay, it just continues. Santa rosa, petaluma, novato, along highway 101 and stretching over towards the napa valley as well as sonoma, into areas along i80, vallejo, fairfield covered in it this morning. The west coast all the way inland we have got rain from ocean beach into discovery bay. If we shift south just a bit, its widespread here as well, over areas of the south bay, little bit of rain snow mix over the diablo range, Mount Hamilton area. Moving it back for you, you can see this is moving ashore so sierra not seeing it yet but the sierra is going to get fresh snow. That is some great news there. Later today and into tomorrow, snow levels will be climbing, though, starting out right about 30,000 feet this morning to about 5,000 feet as we get into tonight and into tomorrow morning. Still low enough to impact our passes, i80, as well as highway 50 and bring snow to lake tahoe. As far as the rainfall amounts expected for us, anywhere from quarter inch to half inch by tomorrow night. Tomorrow night is when we finally dry out. Ill have a timeline of your weekend as well as the extended forecast coming up in just a little bit. Sounds good, rosemary. Thank you. Coming up next, the hayward coronaVirus Testing site is opening soon for another day of testing. The changes being made to prevent the center from being overwhelmed. And some hope for nonprofits that have had their fundraisers and auctions all canceled. Up next, a bay area auctioneer shows us how hes bringing Charity Auctions online. Its coming up next. Auctioneer Steve Haworth out of danville has been raising money for nonprofits, raising over 200 million. However, all the galas and charity functions have all been canceled as we navigate the coronavirus. Lots of good dollars lost, but steve has come up with an idea that he hopes will once again fund those worthy causes. Its called Charity Auction solutions. Com, an Online Auction that has the potential to reach infinitely more people and make even more money in our everchanging world by bringing the event into your home. Lets say hi to steve. An old friend from junior high, just a few years ago, steve. Good morning. Good morning. How are you, frank . Im great. This is such a great idea. First of all, lets talk about some of the organizations that you work with. They must be devastated because this is really their big budget, what they kind of live to work with. Yes. For most of these organizations, the actual galas are the large bridge to not only enable the organizations really across the world to maintain their current levels of services but also to expand those services to those in need. There is no stock gap funding to come in to, unfortunately, make Funds Available when these types of gala events have to be canceled. So we were all devastated to hear that they were all going to be shut down across the country and more than likely the world as well. So out of that devastation arose an idea to the extent that i was able to collaborate with a group to come up with a platform under the guise of if we cant bring the people to the event, lets do our best to bring the event to the people, to give them an opportunity in the comfort and the safety of their own homes to once again participate, to help schools and many other organizations that need support during these times without the need for actually venturing out beyohave basically, is a platform for doing both silent auctions and live auctions and their own home setting in an exciting way. In addition to that, i have reached out to some of my friends, particularly jim douglas of prime Time Entertainment who is going to, with me, collaborate with many musicians and artists throughout not only the bay area, but california as well, and perhaps beyond, to bring some exciting, fun, upbeat, rock n roll, partyatmosphere to these brings that we are going to be via Live Streaming video in folks homes. If my organization is out there, my gala was in april, its been canceled. We have got these great items up for bid. How do they contact you . How does it work . So what they would need to do, simply is to reach out to my website, charityauctionllc. Com, or they can contact me via email, steve. Haworth steve. Haworth outlook. Com. Or in addition to that they can call on my phone, 925389 7714. I have the early samples of my discussing this program with a multitude of nonprofits, is that this is going to really, really be this is really exciting news for them and i hope that not only myself, but all of my fellow auctioneers out there in and around the bay area and the United States can use this platform to take this into the homes of their clients as well. So this is not only for me, but its also for a number of other auctioneers. Maybe you can explain quickly, steve, so even if youre not part of an organization, say its for the rotary club, somewhere in the east bay, and youre in elko, nevada and you say, boy, i would love to get that Klay Thompson jersey. You can go online and bid on it as well. So youre going to reach a much bigger audience by doing this Live Streaming, right . Yes. Typically we would have lets take schools, for example, it would generally just be the parents and perhaps some of the teachers that will attend the live gala. In this particular case the platform is going to enable us and some other collaboration visavis social marketing and advertising thats going to allow us to reach out to people across the nation and, frankly, all they are going to have to do is go online, register for the event, and they will be able to participate from their homes as well. So we are really going to expand the reach of who can participate in these events. All right, steve. I know when does it kick off . Pretty quick, right . Yeah. In the next week, we are getting our arms around everything, getting everybody lined up and what we really need is for people to reach out to us as soon as possible to get on our schedule so we can get their events booked online and ready to roll to make some money. I have emceed a lot of events. I know you have raised a lot of money. This is a great idea. By the way, pro bono to start as well. Which is awesome youre doing it. All the best. Good luck with everything. Thank you so much for having me on. Have a great rest of the day. I will. Good to have you on too. If you would like to have more information, go to our website, hit the web links tab and we will send you over to steve so you can get set up. Very good. Onto weather now.
