Could soon be the global epicenter of the outbreak. Today the governor of new york said cases in his state are growing so rapidly there wont be enough beds in hospital icus to handle all of the sick. New york now accounts for about half of the more than 53,000 confirmed cases across the u. S. About 700 people have now died nationwide. Another sign of how dramatically the world has changed the summer olympics have been postponed until next year. On wall street today, the dow had its biggest oneday gain since 1933 after congress signaled it is very close to an agreement on the largest stimulus bill in history. We just heard a stunning ain a moment from the White House Task force. Anyone who has been to new york city or spent time the last few days should selfquarantine for the next 14 days, just proving how quickly this virus is spreading. We havent flattened the curve, and the curve is actually increasing. Reporter today a stark warning with the peak of the pandemic just 14 to 21 days away. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo told the country to sit up and Pay Attention to new york. Where we are today, you will be in three weeks or four weeks. We are your future. Reporter with nearly one out of every four new york coronavirus patients in intensive care, cuomo outlined a desperate need. 40,000 more icu beds and 30,000 ventilators. Where are they . Where are the ventilators . Reporter Vice President mike pence responded a couple of hours later. Earlier today, fema from the National Stockpile shipped 2,000 ventilators to the state of new york. And tomorrow there will be another 2,000 reporter though for the governor it is not nearly enough. You pick the 26,000 people who are going to die. Suraj saggar with Holy Name Medical Center says his entire report has just ten ventilators left, and theyre running dangerously low on supplies. How desperate are you for more ventilators . Youre going to have suicides by the thousands. Reporter the president s aggressive approach comes amid growing concern among americans about the economy. A new cbs news poll out tonight shows just a quarter of americans say the economy is in good shape. A 32point drop from december. Mr. Trumps comments have received criticism from medical experts and members of both parties. What the president is suggesting is really a formula for more uncertainty, more infections, and more harm to the economy. Reporter ultimately it will be up to the states to decide when to reopen businesses. In texas, the Lieutenant Governor said grandparents would be willing to sacrifice for their grandchildren. No american is going to say accelerate the economy at the cost of human life. Reporter moments ago while the president was advocating for that easter deadline to reopen the country and see packed churches, dr. Anthony fauci, back at the briefing, said we need to be flexible. Doctor, thank you so much. Good to be here. The president said today he wants the country opened by easter. Thats 19 days from now. Is that a realistic goal . So i think its too soon to say where well be by easter. But i think its going to take at least until easter to even begin to see the impact of the social distancing measures that have been put in place in the last week. Weve heard the governor of new york, andrew cuomo, say that new york is going to reach its peak in two or three weeks. There is far from over. Yeah. I do think were really at the beginning of this epidemic. In italy, not long ago, there seemed to be quite a calm and no evidence of cases. And now there are extraordinary numbers of sick people and dying people around the country of italy. And we can see Washington State and new york are the beginning of what could happen in this country around the country. Im quite worried that if we release social distancing measures soon, were going to have a rapid rise in cases. Were not even two weeks into this in terms of the social distancing, and already the discussion has become, well, when can we end it. Is that the right way to look at this crisis . Well, i do understand that even with a week of these measures there has been incredible Economic Hardship around the country, and i think its too soon to say which measure we could let off when. What do you make of the argument that another Great Depression could in itself be a Public Health crisis . I completely agree with that. I think its really important to think through all of the economic consequences. At the same time, we have to do the same for what will happen in the absence of any attempts to slow this virus down. We heard the president say that weve never closed down the country like this for the flu. And the flu kills tens of thousands a year. Why is this different . In a normal flu season, we dont have people overflowing into hospitals. We dont have so many people that we dont have enough ventilators for them. I think we need to make sure that everyone understands that this is a very unusual event. This does not look like seasonal flu. Dr. Tom inglesby, thank you so much. Thank you, norah. Reporter well, senators had been planning to vote tonight. But now it looks like the timing will slip to tomorrow. All the major sticking points have been resolved, but theyre still hammering out a few final details in what will be the largest economic stimulus package in history. We are very close. Reporter the massive bill is designed to resuscitate a suddenly ailing economy. Why is it that big . Because the problem is that big. Reporter 500 billion in loans for big businesses, nearly 400 billion in grants and loans for small businesses. This is a great plan. Reporter the bill includes a onetime cash payment for most working americans, up to 1,200 for individuals, 3,000 for the average family. The bill also expands Unemployment Insurance from 26 weeks to 39 in most states. Boosting benefits by 600 a week. Katy ellis and cason kelly are restaurant servers in atlanta.
