Life will look very different for many families starting tomorrow as dozens of School Districts around the bay area bill be closed. Governor newsom said everyone over age 65 should isolate themselves from those with chronic illnesses. As the number of people who tested positive for coronavirus grows to 335 in california, a 14 increase from the last count, now six people have died from covid19, governor gavin newsom issuing strict new guidelines on how to combat the disease. We are calling for the home isolation of all seniors in the state of california. We are calling for the isolation, home isolation, of all of those 65 years and older and those with chronic conditions. Reporter the governor today estimated 5. 3 million seniors will be affected. We recognize that social isolation for millions of californians is anxiety inducing, but we recognize what all of the science bears out and what we recognize around the rest of the world that we need to meet this moment head on. Reporter Governor Newsom called for all bars, nightclubs, wineries, brew pubs and the like in the state to be closed. He stopped short of shutting down restaurants but advised to social distance patrons and for establishments to reduce her capacity to half. As for the homeless, theres currently 108,000 people in shelter the governor said and the state is working to get them out of encampments and into hotel and motel sites. We have an additional 450 trailers that we have identified that will be dispersing to critical points across the state. Tonight a lot of parents in the bay area are trying to figure out who will watch their kids tomorrow. This weekend the nonprofit Bay Area Tutoring Association has been getting a flood of calls for help. The last few days have been unprecedented and the number of phone calls and emails that we received on our website in terms of how can i support my student or how can i make sure that the academic needs of my student will be met over the next several weeks have been incredible. Reporter chris norwood, founding director of the association, says many parents are trying to figure out how to keep their kids learning while they are out of the classroom. He said the current supply of tutors cant meet demand, but people are also contacting the association to help. Technology is going to have to be leveraged during this unprecedented time to keep the learning going, but what will be most challenging is figuring out how to continue educating the kids that lack access to modern tools to learn outside of the traditional setting. The fire started about 8 30 this morning on 38th street a few blocks from kaiser hospital. Smoke and flames engulfed the empty twostory brick commercial building which was boarded up. Officials say one firefighter fell partially through the second floor and was taken to the hospital with minor to moderate burns. Crews were then removed from that floor and worked on the first floor to contain the fire. The crews here worked very hard as you were watching and saw to keep it inside the building of origin. We think were ahead of it now. So were able to maintain the integrity of all the surrounding buildings and vehicles in the parking lot. Theres still no word what started the fire or how much damage it caused. In campbell a fire broke out at a shuttered former restaurant. It started before 4 a. M. Santa clara county firefighters say crews had a tough time getting inside because metal plates were covering the doors and windows. They managed to bring the fire under control in about 30 minutes. It makes social distancing difficult and dangers can exist from outside visitors or patients who transition to and from hospitals bringing germs with them. We have raised the bar regarding infectious Disease Control in our Nursing Homes. Reporter Vice President mike pence announced new guidelines requiring an isolation area for someone who becomes infected and specialized masks, gowns, gloves and eye protection for healthcare workers. Pence says thousands of federal inspectors will check up on Nursing Homes. We are going to focus all of our inspection resources for the foreseeable future on compliance with Infection Control standards. Reporter theres similar protocols used to limit the spread of the flu. The difference is theres a vaccine or other antiviral treatments for that, but for covid19. Theres nothing here. So its just wasp watch and wait and pray. Reporter Early Warning signs are fever, cough or shortness of breath. I live in fear because Nursing Homes have such a vulnerable population and they have such a Bad Reputation all things considered. Reporter Government Data shows 380,000 people die every year from infections in Long Term Care facilities. Critics argue its because some places dont follow proper procedures. For decades now regulators have taken a very lax approach to enforcement of things like Infection Control in these facilities. These are usually treated as paper violations which can be corrected just by the submission of a plan to regulators. Theres often little or no followup and very low fines, if any. In california they are inspected once a year, but now the president and Vice President want these inspectors to go in and look specifically for any sort of violations as they relate to Infection Control. Places of worship all over the world were forced to suspend or cancel these gatherings as social distancing remains key in the fight against the coronavirus. The bay church is now offering drivethru prayers and a live stream online of its regular services. We basically have closed down our actual campus other than staff that are putting on our services and gatherings so we can stream them live. We always stream live, but its going to be a whole other level. We typically have about 3,000 people on campus each weekend with kids and adults and so now theyre going to be watching online hopefully. Many places of worship moved online to avoid large crowds. Attendees can still hear scripture, listen to music and interact with their religious community through live streams. As a senior citizen, im really thankful to the church for taking the extra precaution that they are and having Services Online and i will certainly be participating in my home with the online service. Catholic masses have been suspended in the san jose diocese. Those churches also offering a live stream instead. Weddings, baptisms and funerals are limited to immediate family only. In San Francisco some Church Services like glide Memorial Church moved online as well. Some catholic churches there did still hold sunday mass. The vatican canceled Public Participation at the popes easter event due to the coronavirus. The easter mass usually draws tens of thousands of people to st. Peters square, but the New York Times is reporting officials are now looking at ways to scale down the easter week services. The vatican also says the popes general audiences and sunday blessings would still be available online. The National Football league is bucking the trend in the world of sports. There are reports the nfl will continue with business as usual. That means the leagues new year begins this week despite teams saying they arent sure they can operate with restrictions on travel, Group Gatherings and close contact thats required for free agent signings. The nfl is one of the few sports that hasnt already completely shut down operations. Nike is temporarily closing their stores in the United States. The stores will close tomorrow and theyll be closed through friday, march 27th. In addition to the u. S. Stores, those in canada, western europe, australia and new zealand will also be closed. Nike employees in the United States have been given the option to work from home or work staggered schedules. I think the most feasible option is the standings would be frozen and the playoffs would begin with those teams that would have qualified for the playoffs if the regular season began. I cant imagine them finishing up the whole regular season and then playing the full schedule of playoff games. Another option is shorten the playoff field.
