Just some news crossing the wires right now, the los angeles unified School District which is the second largest in the country, as well as san diego schools will close because of this Coronavirus Spread here in the bay area and San Francisco while most schools are being closed today, glen park elementary in San Francisco was shut down yesterday. This comes after seven students reported respiratory illness, three districts there, the district says there are no confirmed cases at covid19 at the school so far. Health officials are still investigating. You may have new questions now that the coronavirus has reached pandemic levels. We are working to to the latest information and to help calm your fears. Lets talk with net nadler gary, one of the leading e fections disease experts in thank you for being with us. Thank you. People hear the word pandemic and the and to get even more nervous. Is there a reason to change anything we should have been doing this for . No. I have been telling my patients and i have been telling others about two cornerstones, preparation and education. Preparation you are seeing happened right at this moment in time. It is an historic moment in time. We are seeing people pushing forward, trying to get people to separate. The goal here is to prevent people from getting intensely ill at the same time. You have seen probably on television the spike versus the flat curve, we are trying very hard to make that flat curve a reality. In the United States we currently have, prior to this pandemic, 90 to 100,000 intensive care unit beds. Over the last several weeks Healthcare Facilities around the country are trying to ramp up the number. You can imagine if you do simple math if 20 or 25 of our population gets the virus, which is a very conservative estimate and 20 of those people get sick, we will soon swamp that 100,000 capacity. So, social distancing, what you are seeing today with School Systems that i just heard you announce, we are seeing with professional sports, what we are seeing with office space, with people being sent home to work remotely, really smart. Probably the single best thing we can do to prevent the pandemic from being worse than it is going to be. A lot of people in the bay area are curious as to why one School District and one county is shutting down schools for three weeks. My boys are still in school right now and waiting for the news to change. In the bay area we travel from county to county, city to city. How can it be effective not to have a blanket policy. I feel like if those kids are out, my kids should be too, maybe. I think that is an incredibly reasonable statement, and a statement that i think most parents are concerned about. I have a son patrick, and a daughterinlaw kylie who live in the east bay not too far from where your studio is. And, these are the same concerns that they have. The answer to the question, i believe, is that sometime in the next week plus, most every School System for which this virus is in the community, will be closed. Okay, finally we expect to hear from President Trump at noon, our time today. There is were that he is going to declare a national emergency. That declaration, how do you hope that changes the National Response . I hope it brings those among us who are still denying the reality of this pandemic into better focus. Three important things. We have already talked about social distancing. The other thing that is incredibly important is to make sure that you are personally prepared. Not in a panicky way, but to make sure that you have a chronicle medical illness and you are taking medications for conditions such as type two dino diabetes, if you have a cancer chemotherapy that you are using that you have more third 30 days on hands. These recommendations are so basic, handwashing. When you think about handwashing, just to give you sort of a frame of reference, 20 vigorous seconds with soap and water. In your head, sing happy birthday that is about 20 seconds. And lastly, make sure you have enough food on hand for 2 or three weeks and have some cash on hand in the event that you get sick and you need something to do you a favor because you cannot go out. Lastly, i would like to mention the fact that education is super important. We have some great sites to refer to. First today, we just mentioned the cdc. Gov, and our site at md vip. Com is robust in content, and also will point you in the direction of one of our providers that may be in your neighborhoodwill be able to help you out through this. All right, joining us from boston. Thank you this morning. Coming up next, shutting down in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. We have a live report from anaheim the gates are open at disneyland this morning, but the clock is ticking. One the park plans to close, and for how long. Plus, calls to provide more dna samples, why prosecutors want more samples from the man accused of being the Golden State Killer. You cant outrun it. The pain is coming. Turning to telemedicine during the coronavirus outbreak, reporter Jessica Mensch explains how virtual doctor visits are helping contain the spread of infection at hospitals and medical offices. He opted for a video visit. I will speak with my triage team here and let them know that you should probably be tested. We will give you information for where to go to have the testing done. Back this way, doctors are able to get into the necessary protective gear before he showed up. Thankfully, he tested negative for covid19. He has the flu. Getting lots of rest. Reporter now he knows he did not put himself at further risk. It is a savings to the patient, it is less stress on the healthcare system, and it is less stress and strain on the providers themselves. Not too bad right now, we are always cautious when it is a dry ear but everything pointing toward what looks to be an active weather pattern. Fog is moving up the coast, parts of areas north of the golden gate that leads to a cooler pattern here, the wind is turned on sure davis with a south wind, that is an onshore breeze going through the strait and out to the delta. Only mounted to la belle is that outlier. Due south or south, southwest. I think diablo will turn. Might just be an elevation thing. You can see the board at the dow jones currently up more than 2 , the same can be said for the nasdaq and s p 500. Both those indexes up more than 2 . Joining us right now is george machete from Morgan Stanley to break this all down. We are in a market. We have been in bear markets before, but is it more concerning how we got there because of the steep drop . It is just a dissent. Exactly, it is not a financial problem. The market was doing really well. All the job reports and economic reports from last month are really good. Everything wouldve been just fine. This black swan flew in, the coronavirus. That has kind of been the Tipping Point of the problem for us. We have a containment healthcare problem that we have to solve and because we have not sold it yet, we have morphed into a financial problem, which is now morphing into a political issue today. Democrats, republicans, deciding on what kind of financial stimulus. So, the president of the United States expected to have a News Conference around noontime today. What does the president need to Say Something else or do Something Else in order to get the markets back up . The president can say whatever he wants. He has had a lot. Any president , unless they have a solution for containment, people are worried. You have got to go well and get tested, we have to know that we are okay. All of a sudden we cannot go to games, we are just at home. That is going to effect the economy and Consumer Confidence which will come out next week, the university of michigan report will tell us Consumer Confidence. But, the financial stimulus has certainly helped the market today. Certainly, they are working on a deal and republicans and democrats are working right now , saying that the deal on stimulus is getting close there will be liquidity available. Once that happens, what do you expect to happen . I think this will be the first phase of it. We are in the first inning of stimulus. I think it will be very broad, it will help support some of the institutions that we kind of need. But, how it gets matriculated down to you and i, im not really sure. If you have to stay home to take care of a child or a spouse that is ill who is paying your salary if you are in a big company, you have healthcare benefits. A lot of individuals who work at chase center parttime, and all these parttime events, they dont have compensation. Theoretically, the messages those people are going to trickle down. I dont think that happens very quickly, mechanics are not set up. So, i am really worried about our average person in the bay area, how they are going to survive during this crisis where things are going to be shut down. I was watching the stocks yesterday and was saying wow, here we go. The biggest drop since 1987, black monday. When you were here earlier in the week, i know we cannot predict this all the time, but sitting here and what we saw yesterday, was that the present to you or not . What happened yesterday was that the Federal Reserve very quietly bought back treasuries and made more liquidity in the market. So, market went up about 6 during the day and then had a temper tantrum. It was not enough, then it trended back down again. Fast forward to today, the market seems to appreciate the stimulus that we are going through right now. For those sitting at home watching, we are always concerned, right . We mentioned about 401 k and so on and so forth. What one or two things of advice can you give someone if they are concerned about personal finances right now, watching what we are watching. If you have the 401 k , laster you bought mutual funds and he paid a lot for them. That was buying high. Today, the mutual funds are lower. So for your dollar you can get more bang for your buck. You want to be all in with the 401 k plan. That is for a rgan stanley twee portfolios now, we know that Small Companies and Midsize Companies in the u. S. Have trended more downward than any other index. They have built and the probability of a recession. So, we think now is the time to buy small and mid caps if you are a longterm investor. If you can, if youre contributing 6 , is now the time to contribute more . You have the maxima to money you can contribute any one year, it can be a lot of money, you want to make sure that you are buying as much as you can right now at a low price. The only thing that has changed we have stepped up procedures around cleaning policies, and introduced some new processes to make sure that campers are healthy when they arrive at camp. We have also gone through all curriculum and adjusted it to make sure we are following the best social distancing practices recommended by the cdc. You were mentioning that you have scholarships available, that is still going strong right . Absolutely, 2020 is a new decade, wiest decided to give 20,000 scholarships this year. We have already awarded 12,000 and we have 1000 left. I would really encourage everybody watching this if they, or somebody they know would benefit from some Financial Assistance especially in these troubling times, then this is the time to get your name in there to apply for a scholarship. You know, not everyone can afford the programs that makes it easier for people that arent maybe in a lower income. I am one of the kids who did not go to a lot of summer camps going up, i only went to baseball camp. So, what kind of things do kids do in summer camp . Is this at your camp . Well, the camp Galileo Project is a fun, traditional, communitybased daycamp that is joyful and fun for kids to be at. And we layer on top of that really inspiring projects that teach kids to go to from ideas to reality. At galileo we believe the future belongs to kids who grow up to be creators. Galileo inspires us and we want to have the same innovation of spirits for kids. The way we do that is to give them really wonderful project base experiences like building a go kart or painting a mural, or building a bridge or making a film. When you have these experiences over and over again you start to build your confidence in yourself as a creator. Is this not a sneaky way, but kind of a roundabout way to still keep doing stem activities , but having fun doing it . Absolutely, we think by nature hands on building is by nature, fun. And so, we have known from the beginning that our camps have to check the box of being fun first and foremost, that is why there are so many kids in the bay area that are participating. It is equally attended by boys and girls, we have a wide range of ages and kids and serve broadly appealing, which i think is wonderful. Thanks for coming in.
