They say if the situation warrants it, they may extend that closure if needed. Did they address the online classes . Course content . Any instruct for parents and students on how they can reporter no. One of the things that the superintendent stressed, he says at this point we dont have all the answers. I get the feeling this is a work in progress. Theyre trying to figure out what theyre going to do. One of the questions i had was does this mean theyre going to extend the calendar year . The Academic Year into the summer . They say theyre looking at that as a possibility. And theyre at the Governors Office to talk about funding. If you have no students in class for the entire district for two weeks, they could be out a lot of money. Theyre trying to work with the governor to figure out what to do from there. They say they know theyre not alone. There are other districts, schools throughout the state working on the same problems. You have to wonder. Others will be soon to follow. Governor newsom said today at least 198 people have tested positive for coronavirus in california. That is up by 21 from yesterday. Four people have now died. The governor said it is imperative that more people components that it needs. Im surprised this is not more of the national conversation. We need to focus in on these tests. The governor said today, right now, state labs have conducted 1,500 tests and there are 8,000 more available. To the extent there are backlogs in certain local labs because they dont have all the components, we have already engaged quest to then begin to test those backlogged kits to the extent they dont have all the component components. As far as preventing the spread of the virus, the governor issued an executive ng for the cabs lation of gathering cancellation of gatherings of more than 250 people statewide. Many bay area cities and counties have already taken steps to postpone or cancel large events over the next two to three weeks. San joses mayor says greatly increasing the number of testing kits could stem the spread of the virus. Four firefighters have now tested positive for the virus. Reporter city Officials Say some of the 80 have returned to work. Although its unclear exactly what that number is. Were working on that for you for the next hour. Also because of the spread of the coronavirus into the fire department, this is changing the protocols when they respond to calls for service to your home. The tsa today released specifics on where three covid19 infected san jose Airport Security screening agents were working during the outbreak. Local authorities are pulling together to do everything they can to try to stop the spread of the virus. But he says they need more help from the federal government. There is no secret about my feelings about what whey need to do to do more. And at a national level, were simply not doing nearly enough in terms of testing and tracing that we are seeing other communities throughout the world effectively implement to be able to mitigate the spread of this disease. The expected impact of the pandemic on the World Economy hammered the stock markets again today. The dow plunged 10 . Down 2352 points. The nasdaq and s p were both down about 9. 5 . The drop was so steep that trading was halted for a second time this week. The New York Stock Exchange stopped trading for 15 minutes today shortly after it opened to allow for a coolingoff period. Travel stocks were pounded, including Cruise Companies and airlines. The Federal Reserve said it would pump 1. 5 trillion into the market. The Trump Administration is weighing how to help workers who may be affected. Were looking at a lot of things. Including paid leave. Were looking at many things. Were also making sure that the companies which are Good Companies stay solvent, have the money necessary to keep functioning. So we have a lot of things that were working on with the financial markets. And its gonna work out fine. The dow went into a bare market yesterday. The s p 500 is also now in a bare market. Defined as a 20 drop in its recent alltime high. Were joined by financial analyst james mcbride. Thanks for coming in here. We have seen the fed cut interest rates. Today they offered 1. 5 trillion in loans to big banks. Just trying to do something to stop the bloodletting on wall street. Why is none of this working . Because the market doesnt think thats the problem. There are companies that have liquidity issues that are leveraged or will have to go to the banks to borrow money. But just on monday, they had citi bank, the corporate told the president the banks are in fine shape. They can handle the situation. What was interesting about what happened monday when the fed made a move, and today, the market ignored it. And it continued to fall. So the market doesnt think thats the issue. We have a Public Health crisis. We dont necily have an economic crisis. Thats what i was going to ask. It is more a crisis of confidence then . People are just panicking and selling . Thats exactly right. If we look at the fundamentams of the economy, fundamentams ofeconomy, low inflation, and still fairly High Consumer confidence. So the economy is in pretty good shape. Clearly earnings are gonna get busch whacked by all the bushwhacked by the supply and demand uphe feel in the market. We all understand that. Uphe feel. But the fundamental issue is a health issue. And what are we doing about the health issue . If you look at whats going on in cralical, theyre doing a great job. The governor was talking about getting more testing kits. The mayor in san jose was talking about what they have to do to support the head of the school district. So i think the government is doing a terrific job of trying to limit the damage. We are seeing the bans on large gatherings, just last night we had the president say hes banning most travel between europe and the u. S. All of that. Weighs on investors. It clearly has them rattled. Goyre out, theyre not gonna spend money. Residents response to this crisis has been uneven. It wasnt that big a deal now, it is. And it seems to be uncoordinated. He said if he hadnt talked to the european heads of state, he wouldnt have cut off travel to europe. Thats uncoordinated. And that makes people and the market uncomfortable. So were dealing with two separate issues here that are colliding, and the solutions to an economic problem probably arent the ones you need for a health problem. The best advice is to ride it out. Every time. James, thanks again. Thank you. We have complete and indepth coverage for you online at coronavirusnow. Com. The most uptodate information on the virus from across the country. The sports world is shutting down in an attempt to slow down the spread of the coronavirus. The nba was the first domino to fall. But within 18 hours, every major american sport has followed suit by suspending or canceling games and events. A little after noon today, Major League Baseball announced it was canceling the rest of spring training and pushing back the start of the regular season at least two weeks, which would mean april 9th for both the giants and the as. And Major League Soccer which affects the earthquakes says it will suspend the season Effective Immediately for at least the next 30 days as they continue to assess the impact of the coronavirus. The league said all clubs were united in the decision to pause the season. Usa soccer is canceling all matches in march and april, including the us brazil womens march which was scheduled to be played in san jose on april 14th. For the nba, the goal is to resume the season in time for the playoffs. So about a month from now. But that would obviously not include the warriors who have the worst record in the league. Steph curry acknowledging it all. He i think that is the message for everybody. A lot of folks are saying why did they have to do that . Its an overabundance of caution. And as we saw yesterday, rudy gobert of the jazz. Right, right was diagnosed with the coronavirus. As well as a teammate now. Donovan mitchell. And when that happens, we not only look at that team and those players but the team they played, the team they played, the team they played. And the warriors too, right. Which is everything. Which is everything. So if you gotta selfquarantine, if you test everybody once a week, and everyones clean, in theory you could get back out there. But short of that, i think theyre making the right decision. You were mentioning something when we were in the break about Dallas Mavericks owner, mark cuban. Hes been outspoken on this, and taking some moves that you were explaining. Last night he reacted to the nba postponing the season. He was at one of the games. He was in an interview. And on the spot this is before you knew they were gonna suspend the season. He said im thinking about the vendors and the ushers and the folks that work every day. And hes a multibillionaire, right . So he can absorb some losses. And believe me, i think these guys are gonna lose in the tens of millions. But he was talking about those guy guys. He said id like to im gonna reach out, were don crunch some numbers and figure out if we can pay them while theyre not working at least for part of the time. Thats pretty cool. A major impact. Jason, thank you. Developing news from oh, i beg your pardon. Were gonna to the weather. Developing news from the weather there you go. Talking about some rain thats developing. Thats good. So countries should test people, should look for people who are infected. Reporter in new york, broadway went dark this evening amidcoronavirus fears. The suspension is expected to last through april 12th. The decision comes as the governor banned all gatherings of more than 500 people in an extraordinary step to fight the growing outbreak of covid19. Across the country there have been more than 1,300 confirmed cases of covid19 with the death toll reaching at least 38. In the nations capitol, lawmakers are scrambling to respond to the fastmoving pandemic. The house continued to push for its multibillion dollar stimulus package. And one day after the president addressed the nation about his administrations response, he said the u. S. Is in good shape compared with other countries and that testing is going smoothly. Although many lawmakers disagree. No one is satisfied with where we are right now. We got a long way to go to get rapid, efficient testing. People just want to know right now, do i have it . Do i not have it . For the second straight day, medical experts briefed the House Oversight committee on the latest developments with the outbreak. The senate canceled next weeks planned recess in order to work on legislation to deal with the financial strain from the virus. Lets start with the testing issue here. We have a doctor saying essentially that the u. S. Is failing when it comes to testing. Talk about the implications of that. How difficult is it to slow the spread of this virus when you dont really know who has it . I think whats important to understand, and everyone is talking about this, is that were trying to flatten the curve. What does that mean . Were trying to slow down the spread of the virus before we can actually stop it. The only way to do that is by finding out whos positive, putting them in quarantine, and tracing back all the people they have been exposed to and getting them under quarantine. In order to do that, we need to be able to test people. And whats very frustrating as a medical professional is that we dont have the abilities to be able to test the amount of people that we really want to. And that need to be tested. There seems to be a breakdown in terms of the federal government assisting the states and local authorities. The governor of california is basically saying that the state is receiving some of these test kits. But the kits dont have all the components necessary to run the coronavirus test. Can you explain for everyone exactly how these test kits work . And where this breakdown might be happening . Right. He used a fantastic analogy. Its like going to a store and trying to buy a printer, so you can come home and print something. But you dont have an ink cartripledigit. And thats what were seeing with these test kits. We may be able to get the sample, but we wont be able to run the entire test and get an accurate reading. And thats really not gonna help us in what were trying to do. Were trying to test as many people as possible. Try to find out who they have been exposed to, and get every Single Person in quarantine so we can try to slow down the spread. Lets talk about some of the measures that have been put in place. Were seeing a broad effort to limit those crowds from gatherings. San francisco Public Schools shutting down for several weeks here. This is all in an effort to do whats called social distancing. What exactly does that mean . It means keeping a safe distance between you and the next person whos near you. I think this is a very easy, very costeffective its free. Its a way to make sure that youre not coming in contact with people around you. So if you are sick, youre gonna try to minimize that spread. And national organizations, like weve seen today, disneyland, nba, things that are canceling big events, theyre doing the right thing. We need to do this. And we need to preemptively do this so we can try to slow down the spread. I keep saying that again and again because its gonna be hard to stop the spread, but we can flatten the curve. We can slow that down. You just do not want everyone getting sick all at once. Exactly. We really appreciate your insight as always. Doctor of internal medicine. Thanks so much for coming in. We appreciate it. Barlt feeling the effects of the coronavirus. Well talk about the request for Financial Aid from the agency amid steep drops in ridership. And another warm day out there.
