Governor newsom has issued an advisory for large groups of events for the next few weeks. It runs through the end of this month. It also says small events can go ahead as planned if organizers create whats called social distancing. Meaning people can get no closer than 6 from each other. Gatherings at higher risk should be limited to 10 people and it does not apply to essential Public Transportation, Shopping Centers or dormitories. Im concerned about whether my kids have school or not. Im concerned, you know, are we all doing the right thing because this is obviously new territory. Two more cases were reported in marin county for a total of three people and two more patients were diagnosed in Santa Cruz County bringing that total to four. In all, 177 patients have been diagnosed in california. Four people have died. New this morning, the San FranciscoUnified School District has shut down one Elementary School for the next two weeks. One student and some of their parents have reported having respiratory illnesses. The test results are not back yet. The students and their families are selfquarantined. Also, today, all 90 schools connected to the arch diocese are closed. Catholic schools in marin, San Francisco, and san mateo counties. The closure includes classes as well as planned school events, field trips, and community activities. The decision was made after a student at one school tested positive for the coronavirus. Families are being asked to report any other confirmed cases of the virus to the district. Time now 5 05. It is expected that 300 passengerses remaining on that grand princess cruise ship dockeded at the port of oakland will get off the ship later today. 2,200 passengers have been removed from the ship since it docked on monday. Many went to Travis Air Force base for a two week quarantine. Others boarded charter planes and flew to other military bases where they will be quarantined. Drivers for dhl have been watching the process play out all week long right outside their hub at the port of oakland. Its crazy. Its crazy for us to open up the back of dhls doors and see the planes. President trump will also apply Financial Relief for schools and businesses already being effected. President trump is now asking congress to fund a 50 billion bill for the Small Business administration to begin issuing low interest loans to affected businesses. Later today, House Speaker nancy pelosi is expected to introduce a bill to congress aimed at providing coronavirus relief. The district says this is a fluid situation and it will still consider closing schools on an individual or even system wide basis if its needed. Parents who would like to keep their kids home can do so and should notify the school of their plan. Nurses from several local hospitals are protesting the governments response to the coronavirus. The nurses staged a national day of action yesterday at ucsf demanding better protection for nurses, patients, and the general public. Theyre protesting the cdc relaxing guidelines for Health Care Workers dealing with patients with the coronavirus. Nurses also say hospitals arent doing enough to make sure they have the proper equipment and training thats needed. Well, obviously the nurses need to be protected to do their job well. And if we can protect ourselves, were going to do the best job for our patients. Were going to make sure they get the best care. Theres no lapses in care. Theres no missing of care. Theres no contamination. Nurses say they have been trained in hygiene and isolation procedures, but there is not enough Information Available and they dont feel supported. Unions say theyve also contacted osha and other federal agencies over their concerns. Happening today san jose mayor licarda have confirmed. We know three workers have tested positive for the virus. The three infected agents worked the evening security shift in terminal b. They had contact with 40 other workers who are all now in self quarantine. People have been stocking up on cleaning supplies. In alameda last night we spoke to a tech worker after employees said everyone should work from home for the next two weeks as a precaution theyre measure. Surprisingly theres not that many people at the grocery store, but theres no toilet paper. That was shocking. Theres also not a lot of pasta. So that was interesting to see. The employee we spoke with says while he is prepared to work from home for the next two weeks, his employer says they may extend those guidelines. It is nice for a lot of people who can work from home. We cannot do that. I think were some of the last few people. In all seriousness it is lightening up traffic but boy we feel for the restaurant workers and the retail workers. Business is down. Yeah. And people are still going places. It hasnt been completely light in the first hour of the commute it has been, though. Right now it is at the bay bridge. Police have responded to that area near san pablo and university avenues. They found evidence of gunfire. At first, the men refused to come out of the house. Negotiates epis bli them into custody. The cdc says the last 300 passengers on that grand princess cruise ship docked at the port of oakland will finally be taken off the ship sometime today. 2200 passengers have been taken off the ship since it docked on monday. They are either being quarantined here in the United States or sent back to their home countries on charter flights. 1,100 crew members remain on the ship and will likely be quarantined at sea. And the nba season suspended until further notice. Rudy gobert from the utah jazz has the coronavirus. Two games involving gobert and a rev team that worked with gobert earlier this week. Its unclear when the season will resume and if any missed games will ever be made up. Governor newsom has issued a statewide policy for events that could draw large crowds. But Officials Say there are no confirmed cases in oakland schools. There are two students who have selfquarantined but they have not tested positive for the virus. If Health Officials recommend they close schools, they are prepared to do so. In these two cases, they have not recommended that we close schools. If we get the recommendation that they say we should close schools, we will close schools. Because of this situation, what we know about it, we have not determined that it is necessary to close schools. Now, schools will remain open. The district is suspending or delaying activities that have more than 100 people, but the district is still considering what to do about School Sporting events. China is reporting 15 new cases of the coronavirus and thats considered a hopeful sign. Chinas Health Commission says the 15 cases is a drop from the 24 that were reported the day before. More than 80,000 people in china currently have tested positive for the virus with more than 3,000 deaths. And, in italy, the government has ordered all the shops, cafes and shops shut down for two weeks. Grocery stores and pharmacies can stay open. There are now more than 12,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in italy and more than 800 people have died. Heres a look at the number of coronavirus cases here in the u. S. The state of washington has the most cases of the coronavirus at 267. Thats followed by california, new york, and massachusetts. In total, there are 951 coronavirus cases here in the u. S. Leaders at bart say they may need emergency funds to make up for a steep drop in if revenue. Fewer people are taking the trains. Ktvus allie rasmus is live at the bart station in orinda with that story. 5 45 in the morning is usually the beginning of the morning rush for people who take bart to and from work on a regular weekday. But here at the orinda station its not very busy. Usually we see passengers rushing through these gates to get up onto the platform. Theres just a handful, maybe a dozen or so people up on the platform. More people are being told by their employers to work from home. Bart is installing hand sanitizers at every station to try and alleviate some of the concerns about the virus. One dispenser will be mounted in the paid area of the station. Bart says overall ridership this this week is down 30 compared to a month ago. More than 290,000 people took bart this past tuesday compared to more than 415,000 on an average tuesday last month. Bart estimates its losing anywhere from 440,000 to 600 thousand dollars every weekday because of this lost ridership. On the bright side, the less crowded trains means passengers can keep their distance. But bart says its not going to be scaling back services or trains. Back out here live at the orinda station you can kind of peak in. Theres some people sitting down on the train. But usually, this time in the morning you start to see more people standing room only on these bart cars. Definitely fewer riders on bart. Bart says it may actively pursue emergency aid from local, state, and federal sources. Patients can expect to have results in just two to three days. The state says the drive up clinic is not only convenient but it also allows for safer testing and sick individuals are now not walking into urgent care. Los angeles county is reporting its first death from the coronavirus. That patient was visiting friends. The person had traveled extensively in the last month including a long layover in south korea. The total number of cases in Los Angeles County is 27. Tom hanks has confirmed that he and his wife rita wilson have tested positive for the coronavirus. The actor posted on instagram they are in australia. They felt tired like they had a cold. They were tested for covid19 and they came back positive. Hank says they will be reserved and isolated as long as Public Health and safety requires. And, caught on camera, the frightening moments a Mountain Lion attacked a sheriffs deputy. This is in northern colorado. That deputy was responding to help a victim who was attacked by that very same Mountain Lion. The first victim taken to the hospital. The deputy who responded was bit on the shoulder. They are both expected to be okay. The Mountain Lion was later shot and killed. Bernie sanders is back on the campaign trail today. Sanders addressed the media yesterday and told reporters he is staying in the president ial race despite only winning one out on tuesday. San francisco is taking action to help businesses who have been impacted by the coronavirus. Mayor london breed joined members of the board of supervisors to announce that relief effort. We are starting with a Million Dollars for this fund which will provide at least 10,000 grants for Small Businesses. We are allowing Small Businesses to defer the next round of Quarterly Business taxes to next year in february of 2021. Some other things the city plans to provide disability insurance, paid family leave, and partial unemployment for people who find themselves on a reduced work schedule. All the fears and precautions surrounding the coronavirus are taking a big toll on Non Profit Community based organizations. The effect means nonprofits are struggling to find volunteers to work. The San FranciscoMarin Food Bank says only a hand pfl of volunteers showed up yesterday to help sort fruit and bag vegetables. Theyre using emergency funding to buy more presorted projects which are more expensive. We cant do our work for volunteers. But on a long term basis, we need to get our volunteers back in here.
