This was the scene just after 2 30 this morning when the first calls came in. The semi truck driver veered off westbound 80, went through a fence and onto a side street. The long process of getting all the passengers off the grand princess cruise ship continues this morning. The ship is now docked in oaklands outer harbor. Thats where cgtns allie rasmus is and whats happening next. Things are quiet right now. This is the grand princess ship right here behind us in oaklands outer harbor. Lit up with thousands of passengers and the crew members still on board confined to their rooms this morning. This is going to be a slow and careful process. They started taking people off the ship jed. Were waiting to find out an exact number. And they will continue that process today. But it is going to take several days. This is what it all looked like yesterday Late Afternoon when the sickest passengers got off the ship first. They were transported to some undisclosed hospitals here in the bay area. Most of those crew members but two of them peng passengers. Some others on board have shown symptoms of the virus. Those from out of state will go to Lackland Air Force base in texas for a 14day quarantine period. That is true regardless of how they, the results of their tests for coronavirus. Now, passengers on board the ship are understandably anxious to get off. One man on board told ktvu the ship is running out of supplies and some passengers are running out of essential medication. Well i kind of, it was hard to sleep last night just because of the situation and i woke up this morning, we were awakened by the Health Workers who are all dressed up in white suits and head gear so like little martians. Reporter once passengers get off the ship, the ordeal is not over. Theyll have to spend 14 days in quarantine. Many of them who are local here to california will go to Travis Air Force base as well as some other military bases around the country. Passenger evacuations are expected to take days. Theres about 3500 people on board this ship. About a thousand of them are crew members who were told will remain in quarantine on board even after the 2,000 or so passengers disembark off the ship. For now, things are quiet, people are still sleeping and resting in their cabins on board. Live in oakland, allie rasmus, ktvu fox 2 news. At Travis Air Force base 150 passengers from that cruise ship are quarantined there now. They arrived at about 8 00 last night on two buses and a van. And, looking through the window, you can see the driver and several passengers wearing protective masks. Some of the residents living near the Travis Air Force base are not happy to see the Cruise Ship Passengers arriving. They need to stay on the bus. Its a city within itself there as it is. Ive been on these ships. They could get medical people on board. Now the passengers arriving at Travis Air Force base, do not show signs of the infection, but theyre going to be watched closely for the next two weeks. President trump says he will ask congress to pass payroll reliefs. Discussing a possible payroll tax cut or relief, substantial relief. Thats a big number. Were also going to be talking about hourly wage earners getting help so that they can be in a position where theyre not going to ever miss a paycheck. The president said he will also meet with the Small Business administration to discuss stimulus measures for companies, special those in the travel industry. Several republican lawmakers are now in self quarantine. Matt gates, georgia congressman ted collins, and ted cruz came in contact with some who tested positive with the virus last month. The president and Vice President also attended that congress conference, and senator gates flew on air force one with the president yesterday from florida. A woman in her 60s is now forcing santa clara to take drastic safety actions. The woman who died yesterday at El Camino Hospital at mountain view, had other medical problems. She was the first person in the area diagnosed with the coronavirus who had no link to International Travel or contact with an infected person. And, starting tomorrow, Santa Clara County is banning all events that will have more than 1,000 people to keep the virus from spreading. Santa clara county has 43 cases. Almost half of them were spread by community transmission. This new ban will continue through the end of march. It affects concerts, San Jose Sharks game, soccer games for the earthquakes, and all stanford basketball home games. This. Sword is legally enforce nl by the sheriffs and its a crime to disobey an order. The ban on Mass Gatherings does not include shopping malls, supermarkets and airports. And, right now, there are no plans for mass closings of schools. High schools were cloeszed. Lowell high school. After a parent tested positive for the illness. Lowell went through enhanced cleaning over the weekend and the School District announced classes will resume tomorrow. Arch bishop Rearden High School will be closed for two weeks after a student and a parent tested positive for the virus. The allboys Catholic School has one of the top Basketball Teams in the state had to force to postpone. I after a custodial staff member tested positive for the virus. The principal says the employee did not come into direct contact with students or staff, but the school will be closed until march 19th. In sacramento county, the elk grove School District, the biggest School District in Northern California will be closed for a second straight day. An Elementary School student and two members of the childs family tested positive for the virus. The elk grove School District has more than 60,000 schools. Its scary, but i dont know what to believe. I dont know if its being blown out of pro portion because im hearing thing on both sides. A young person getting the virus is considered rare. A man accused in a cold case of killing a teenager and burrying his body near Sonoma State University is now in court. 20yearold Daniel Carillo is charged with homicide. Now during closing arguments yesterday for the stabbing death of 18yearold n eeumda wilson. He told jurors that cowell was trying to fool them when he testified in his own defense. You know, i love listening to the who and the think the World Health Organization does a great job. And they have said from day one they dont believe that travel restrictions help in an epidemic. However, i think we saw in our country we wh we did place some of those travel individuals on some of the individuals coming from china i think that did delay some of the importation of the virus. I think you have to weigh all of those things. Right now, of course, we are hearing from dr. Fochi at the nia that the individuals who are older or people who sh preexisting medical conditions should think twice about getting on a plane or getting on a cruise ship. When we think about spring break and we think about traveling, you know, theres really not i think its going to be up to the individual family and where youre going. So we know now that if if you are traveling to a level three country thats going to be sal castaneda, china, 0 or italy or iran, people that come back theyre going to be quarantined if for 14 days. Youre going to be asked not to take an uber, you cant take a taxi. You have to distance yourself from someone in your home. If its a level two, youre going to have to watch and monitor your health. So i think that everybody has to weigh where theyre going, what theyre doing. If social distancing is going to even be an option in the environment youre going to be in and try to make your decisions that way and, certainly, again, considering your health is just so important. Berkeley , the campus itself will remain open. So far, the only confirmed case was a faculty member at stanford. Many College Administrators believe its just a matter of time before a professor or student is infected. The universities will then decide what to do next after spring break. The coronavirus making a lot of people change their normal routine like working from home or not riding public transportation. In oakland, bart passengers say theyd seen a big droppoff in the number of passengers. But, bart says ridership was down 8 last week compared to the week before. While some passengers say theyre taking precautions, others say theres no reason to stop riding bart. Its kind of like a ghost town now. It used to be so crowded every morning but now its bizarre.
