Santa clara county reported three new cases. Now, theres about 14. Meantime, a cruise ship is cutting its trip short and trying to sail back to San Francisco. Ktvus Alyssa Haring ton is at pier 26 in San Francisco to tell us about this cruise ship tied to the first coronavirus death. Good morning alyssa. Yeah, thats right. This is the cruise ship terminal. As you can see, there is no ship here. Its combg being held held off the coast of california. There are no confirmed cases of covid19 coronavirus on board. But, the cdc wants to test certain individuals before allowing the vessel to arrive here in San Francisco. A passenger who was on that saekt same grand princess cruise ship on a previous cruise died from the coronavirus. The cruise was at sea from february 11th to february 21st. The ship then left on another trip to hawaii. Governor gavin newsom said 21 people on board both passengers and crew have now developed flu like symptoms. We are going to be flying testing kits to the cruise ship, and we are going to be sending those quickly back to the state and primarily to richmond lab where well be able to test very quickly. Also, on the ship are 62 passengers who were on the first trip to mexico where that person got sick and died along with two members of the crew. Two members posted this video on youtube. We havent had fever. No. But weve had a cold and some chest congestion which is part of the symptoms. But, they did come to our room and checked us. And determined that we are not with said virus. Its still unclear exactly how the state and the cdc plan to move forward. If they will make everybody stay on board that ship or if they or when they will allow it to return here in San Francisco. Also, new this morning, an Oakland Charter school has cancelled classes today and tomorrow. The Monarch Academy reports a staff member may have been exposed to the coronavirus. Now School Officials emphasize the worker was possibly exposed, but they decided to take preventive action to protect students and staff. A private school in atherton will also be closed for the rest of the week. A staff member had contact with a relative who tested positive for the virus. However, the worker is not showing any symptoms of infection. I didnt know it would get so close to us here in menlo park. But, i guess thats the case with coronavirus and how bad its getting. Menlo school is undergoing a deep cleaning and School Officials say they are working closely with the San Mateo County department of health and the cdc. Our time now 5 04. Some private schools are preparing to keep teaching students if theyre forced to close temporarily because of the coronavirus. Many are considering online classes so students can continue school work at home. The sackland school in moraga is considering its options and one is a San Francisco base company out cool. Which offers online classes or individual teachers can teach their own lessons and students can stay in touch with their regular teachers. I can explain things. I can introduce lessons. Also, the students have access to talk to me. They can email me if they have questions or concerned about anything that theyre doing. Now, private schools can make their own decisions based on their own needs and their finances. The state officials havent said if california could afford to provide Online Learning for all 6. 3 Million Students in public schools. Today, test kits for the coronavirus will be air lifted to a cruise ship thats sailing back now to San Francisco. Yeah, the grand princess was scheduled to dock last night but was ordered to stay in International Waters and away from the california coast. Thats because a 71yearold Placer County man who was a passenger on board the grand princess last month, died yesterday from the virus. This is californias first coronavirus death. Governor gavin newsom has declared a state of emergency. So far there are 53 confirmed cases in california. That Emergency Declaration allows more access to resources, personnel, and funding. More coronavirus cases are popping up in santa clara county. The Health Department announced three more cases. So, now, there are 14 of them there. One patient who is a man in the hospital now, where he got the infection, we dont know yet. Two other new patients are men who were exposed to someone with that vierts. Theyre being isolated at home. Los angeles county is the latest area in the state to declare a local emergency. Six of them in just the past two days. A medical contract worker at lax who was screening people at the airport is among the new infections. With 53 tested cases positive, this is no longer isolated in just one part of our state. This is broadly shared as a burden and a responsibility up and down the state. Governor newsom says california will crack down on Companies Taking advantage of people during the coronavirus. They are upset in the spike in the cost for face masks and hand sanitizers. Newsom says the state is also expanding capacity to test people for the virus and requiring governmentsponsored programs to cover the expense. Time is now 5 33. The death toll here in the u. S. From the coronavirus keeps growing. Congress is about to approve a massive new spending package today to deal with it. Doug luzader has more from washington where lawmakers are getting updates on efforts to contain it. The senate is expected to sign off on these new funds relatively soon here. You wont find a single expert out there whos saying this is going to be contained. And, a number of states now including washington, california, hawaii have declared a state of emergency. Time is 5 35. The 17th annual International Ocean film festival. The latest bay area event said to be postponed because of the coronavirus. It was scheduled for march 12th through the 15th at San Franciscos cowell theater. Organizers were expecting more than 5,000 people. Now theyre trying to reschedule the festival probably until sometime in mid to late summer. The Airlines Continue to take a hit here in the u. S. And overseas. International flights by 20 next month. Citing a slump in demand. The carriers also parking some wide bodied jets and offering staff to take unpaid leave. Jet blue also cutting flights. Theres a small silver lining. The coronavirus is actually driving gas prices lower. Gasbuddy reports a drop of 6 0. 06 per gallon. In some spots across the country, many stations are less than 2 a gallon. A slow down in demand has led to cheaper oil. That leads us to sal castaneda. Hes watching the commute. There are some slowdowns, dave and pam. The altamonte pass is slow as it normally is. And, then, you will see traffic Getting Better through livermore. Weve had a couple of things happening here. Theres some slowing in castro valley. But the traffic does look okay after that. There have been no major issues at the bay bridge although the metering lights are on. This is about a 10minute delay. Lets bring Steve Paulson in with todays weather. It will be cooler today with record highs. Napa yesterday was 81 degrees. I wasnt in napa. I was in gilroy. Today, it will be cooler and cooler with 60s and 70s. The cooling will take us into friday and saturday. The onshore breeze is in place and watch the fog go from not much to wham, look at that. Thats a big fog bank for early march. Thats what we have. so, the system to the north is going to usher in even more of a pronounced fog bank tomorrow and maybe give us a little rain saturday morning. It will still be cooler inland. And more clouds cooler. Well take this into the weekend with the possibility of that rain saturday morning. After that, its a little iffy for us. So about 9 00, 10 in the morning on saturday thats where its going to be. It looks to me like it favor Central California and especially Southern California more than us. Maybe it will be Santa Cruz Mountains, san jose south as we head towards next tuesday and wednesday. It will be something to watch, but well focus on saturday and deal with that next week. Its been two weeks since Anne Kirkpatrick was fired. Cristina rendon joins us live in oakland this morning with what the former chief is now asking for. Yeah, good morning, to you pam. Anne kirkpatrick hasnt been quiet since she was fired if this morning shes going to be speaking out again. Shes not alone here. We understand shes going to be joined by another former Oakland Police chief Howard Jordan and both of them have been vocal about the federal oversight monitor. They are going to speak out about that and two weeks ago when we sat down with her, we talked about the monitor. She told me the department was very close to being in compliance with all of the reforms, and then, the monitor would add new reforms basically saying that the goal post would be moved so to speak. And, now, shes concerned about that and she does want to see this federal program ended. Its a Million Dollars contract. Where is the incentive to find compliance. We have been skpg for the metrics so we know whether were moving towards, and some of these tasks do not have metrics and how do you hit a mark that you dont know whats being measured. Kirkpatrick says shes weighing her legal action. Schaaf said it was personally hard for her to make that decision to terminate the chief. But she had said the trust had been broken between the chief and the commission. And, so, heres where we are now. Two weeks later, she was fired and still speaking out. A new report says a San Francisco Police Department has completed less than half of the reforms ordered by the Justice Department. The Police Department says it will pick up the pace on the 272 reforms the Justice Department ordered. These reforms were initiated after several officerinvolved killings that led to the resignation of former police chief greg sur. Despite the slow progress there have been some positive changes including reduction of use of force incidents. And, later here on mornings on 2, chesa boudin will join us live in our studio. He has already made some headlines for some high profile cases including the controversial decision to pursue a restoretive justice model against a 20yearold man who was arrested for his involvement in a hate crime. Happening today in San Francisco, parents and teachers expected to rally. The school board called a special meeting to talk about staff layoffs aimed at closing a 26 26 million budget gap. The board cancelled that meeting. However, the parents and teachers say theyll still hold their rally to let the school board and public members know they want to work with the school board to find ways other than laying off workers to cut expenses. That rally will start at 4 30 this afternoon. The Oakland School board approved 20 20 million for budget cuts. Teachers, students, and parents demanded the meeting to find others in that budget gap. Many suggested shutting down the School Police program which they say would save 2 million. The cuts are agonizing, but necessary. The involvement is not an option. Even though we did do our best to try to keep cuts as far away from students as possible, there will still be impacts to schools. Now, the staff cuts will include librarians and counselors. The board also approved using 1 million from the Emergency Fund to help close that budget gap. Time is 5 46. Happening today, Community Activists in San Francisco will hold a rally to celebrate a victory in what they called a planned development in the mission district. A proposed 10 story Apartment Building at 16th and mission that critics call the monster in the mission. Last month, the developer of the project withdrew the plans. Now the property is up for sale. Todays rally is planned for 5 00 p. M. At the 16th street bart station. And, the Santa Rosa City Council Approved a large shelter and apartment complex. Along with space to shelter more than 200 homeless people. Its expected to cost 123 million. It will be in downtown santa rosa near morgan and 7th streets. Construction is expected to begin early next year. San francisco supervisors are moving forward with a plan to build a new Homeless Navigation Center in market area. The examiner reports the shelter is expected to cost nearly 8 million a year to operate. Now, it would be open 24 hours a day. It would have enough room for 200 beds. People will also be allowed to bring in their pets and possessions. It is expected to open this fall. Time is 5 48. Care givers and supervisors in San Mateo County are fighting to keep a hospital open and not shut down because of bankruptcy. Hospital workers packed a special supervisors meeting last night in daily city talking about plans to close Seaton Medical Center and the potential impact. Seton is daily citys biggest employer.
