I just want to let you know that there is say huge response from fire and San Jose Police out here. And i am south of downtown on south tenth street. Near the happy hallow zoo. You can see the smoke for miles. It has 11ed. I want to bring in captain brad plouchet to give us a better idea of what happened. At 2 59 this afternoon, our dispatchers received multiple calls stating there was a fire at this address. The First Fire Department employee onscene was our fire chief. He reported that we had some palettes and multiple fires that were already on fire behind the business. He starts our routes en route. We did have a significant number of palettes on fire and it quickly spread to the other items behind this auto shop. The position that were in right now, we have south 10th street closed. And the same thing on 7th street. Multiple ladder trucks set up. Our initial concerns were the safety of the people that were working here. We were able to get them evacuated and tried to get the building surrounded, the lot that was on fire. Making sure we didnt have fires spread to the additional buildings and worked toward the center of the fire. Weve knock today down pretty significantly. Were gonna be here for quite sometime getting through all these palettes that are on fire, the cars, the tires in the lot. Well probably have the streets shut down for the next few hours as well. Reporter do you have any idea on the cause of the fire yet . We havent received any reports from the occupants, the people that ran the business. As of yet. It is an enormously important day in the democratic racing. California and texas have the most delegates up for grabs today. Here in the bay area, there still are several more hours to cast your ballot. Rob roth is at a polling station in Contra Costa County with a look at the turnout. And were wondering if its being affected by the coronavirus. Reporter yes, it is. Were in front of the county elections office. And they set up a drivethru lane where people can drop off their ballots without having to get out of their car cars. Hereby at st. Andrews church, a steady stream of voters have been coming to make their voices heard. 87 are vote big mail, but not these folks. I like the experience of going into the voting booth, yeah, on the day of. Its just exciting. Reporter its too soon to know if any prospective voters stayed away from polling places out of fear of contracting the coronavirus. Election Officials Say it did have an effect on the election day staffing at precincts. Over the weekend, about three dozen poll workers said that they didnt want to work anymore because of the virus. So we had some cancellations. Reporter thats about 36 dropping out of a staff of 1,600. Another concern, the touchscreens the mores may use. Voters are free to wipe the screen with their own disinfectant. Poll workers are not required to clean the screen. We talked about following what the Public Health officers are telling us to do. And it comes down to personal hygiene. Yesterday he got endorsements from Amy Klobuchar and Pete Buttigieg, along with beto orourke. Biden will be in los angeles later tonight. Bernie sanders cast his vote in his home state of vermont early this morning alongside his wife. And thats where he will be holding his Election Night rally. More than a third of the delegates are up for grabs tonight. Sanders is hoping to keep his own momentum going after wins in New Hampshire and nevada. The most recent polls show that he is a favorite to win in california. Senator Elizabeth Warren cast her ballot in cambridge, massachusetts. There are 91 delegates up for grabs there. Polls show her lagging behind Bernie Sanders in her home state. After voting, senator warren headed to michigan for an Election Night event in detroit. And former new york mayor Michael Bloomberg spent today campaigning in florida after spending 500 million. Its possible he could end the night without winning any of the states that are up for grabs. He told a reporter today he has no plans to drop out of the race for the white house, saying that he is in it to win it. There are the numbers. 44 to joe biden. Michael bloomberg interestingly enough, 17 , which means he said in that realm of viability. But proof that momentum is real in that state for joe biden. This was a state that was red until 2018. Now a democraticflipped area for the democrats. Joe biden proving that he is building that momentum and starting to make hundred dollar way. When you look at the results of virginia, surprised at how well bloomberg did . Outpacing Elizabeth Warren . I think thats the question, right . When you spend as much money as he has, especially on super tuesday, keeping in mind he visited all 14 days. 14 states. And is this the first time hes been a factor, on the ballot. He often pulls votes away from someone like joe biden who again leads a big night tonight. This was part of mayor bloombergs strategy. Put it all in on super tuesday. Well see if it works out for him. Were talking about states like virginia back east. Thats a much different ball game than here in california. Well see if that momentum from South Carolina can carry over to a state like california for joe biden, if he can eat into Bernie Sanders support here. I think for california, it will be a race for second. Bernie sanders has polled extremely well here. Hes built on his lead, especially with the latino community. Which will be a huge factor in the state of california. Many voters held onto their ballots until today. Because they wanted to see what would happen. When we see Pete Buttigieg, klobuchars voter anies toward joe biden, i think a win for him would mean closing the gap between Bernie Sanders and himself. And if you can limit the size of bernies win tonight in california and get some of those delegates in some of those counties, Rural Communities that buttigieg had done well in, thatll be a win for joe biden. He just wants to meet that 15 threshold. Absolutely. You hit 15 , you get some of that. And you look at texas which is the second largest which is what everyone is playing for at this point. San jose police arent saying much, only that they are investigating a homicide that is consider a cold case. Considered a cold case. Pleasant Elementary School district says a racial slur directed toward black people was written on a poster last week. The School District along with a representative from the naacp and San Jose CityCouncil Members all came together today to denounce hate and bigotry on school campuses. As an educator in this community for more than 30 years, its painful and heartbreaking to see hatred in our community. And sadly, this is not the first time that this has happened. The superintendent says this silent third time that racist graffiti has been found on campuses in this School District since last year. She also says the district is installing new surveillance cameras to prevent Something Like this from happening again. Police have not made any arrests in connection with the case. And the latest on the Coronavirus Spread here in the bay area. Santa clara county Health Officials announced two new cases of the coronavirus, bringing the total to 11 cases in that county. The source of the infection is under investigation. The county Health Director said theyre issuing new guidance for people in santa clara for people at higher risk for exposure to avoid large gatherings such as sporting events or concerts. People over the age of 80 are most at risk. And those with other Health Conditions including heart disease, cancer, diabetes or lung disease. The city of berkeley says a resident there has tested positive after travelling to an area with an outbreak. President trump toured the National Institutes of health in maryland. The cdc reports there are more than 100 cases now here in the u. S. In at least 15 different states. There have been nine deaths so far. All of them in washington state. And many from the same senior care facility. While many people globally have built up immunity to seasonal flu strains, covid19 is a new virus to which no one has immune. Immunity. New york city officials announce its their second confirmed case. The federal vfsh making an emergency cut to its benchmark Interest Rates. The fed made this move to help shield the economy from the impact of the coronavirus outbreak. Its cutting shortterm rates by a half percentage point, which is the biggest cut in more than a decade. The fed chairman says the virus poses evolving risk to Economic Activity. Virus and the measures that are being taken to contain it will surely weigh on Economic Activity both here and abroad for sometime. Today marks the first time the fed has cut rates outside of a regularly scheduled meeting since the 2008 financial crisis. On wall street today, investors were disappointed. Well, the business was that the chairman came out and said the economic fundamentals are good. And he did, i think, a good job of reassuring businesses that the bases of the economy are good. But what he cant do is assure consumers and raise Consumer Confidence to raise an overnight Interest Rate. Our economy rises and falls based on the consumers. And the consumers are reacting to whats going on with the coronavirus. Particularly in the travel industry where people are cans lingz vacation, flight, cruises, things like that. Yeah, its fear, its uncertainty thats driving the markets at this point. Does this point to that were in the middle of a correction . Very clear. Because the market doesnt know how to interpret whats going on, now its being driven by the worst emotion of all which is fear. So its pretty clear that the market is reacting, maybe overreacting. But we saw last week with the dow and s p going down 10 and 11 respectively in just one week, its almost unheard of. And bond yields have fallen as well. What does that indicate to you in terms of the level outlook for Economic Growth . Its showing you that the bottom market has little top. And the economy being able to be successful. What we saw today specifically was the tenyear rate fell below 1 for the first time in history. All right. Aside from just the fear and the uncertainty, what is the impact this outbreak is having on the Global Economy . You talk about tourism, travel, you talk about industry. What are the effects that were seeing on the ground level . Were gonna see a lot of effects. One of them is what you would call the supply chain. China is a hub ever manufacturing for the entire world. Right. Things like apple phones cant be produced in the way they used to be. And as that spreads, anything thats being produced in a factory is gonna have a hard time. Workers arent gonna be there. And at the other end, consumers are not gonna be there. So how far and how fast this, heaven forbid, pandemic spans is gonna tell us how its gonna affect the economy. If this works into a full blown global pandemic, do you have any doubts that were heading toward a recession . None whatsoever. I wish you were gonna Say Something different than that. Im sorry but if it takes off like, that we dont know how to handle that. In an allconnected, Global Economy, there will be a global recession. Our fingers are crossed that thats not going to happen. There are steps aside from the u. S. We have the fed here cutting Interest Rates. Almost as lows you can go here. What other steps do you think that g7 nations, global powers around the world can take to maybe stabilize the Global Economy . Right. And i think what they have to do, particular lite g7 is do what the fed did today. Be proactive. You have to come in and reassure businesses. And one of the things that the stock market reacted to today, they werent seeing that proactive approach from the g7 countries. Australia did step in. But most of the g7 did not. Another big victory for him. Yeah. And thats part of that momentum. South carolina, North Carolina, partners carrying that momentum especially with african americans. And North Carolina with 110 delegates up if are grabs. One of the larger states. Picking up a victory there. This is not a winner take all like in the republican primaries. This is about 15 , both in congressional districts and at the statewide level. But joe biden continues to hold the percentages, this would bode very well for him early in the contest. Voters in 14 states take part in super today. Polls have already closed in four states. Bernie sanders knocks his first win of the night in vermont. Joe biden wins in virginia and North Carolina. More states are going to close at 5 00. Alabama, massachusetts, maine, oklahoma and most of texas. A lot of attention will be on a possible bump for joe biden after Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar dropped out of the race and threw their support behind the former Vice President. Results are coming in from those four states where the polls are closing right now. Lets get to Heather Holmes with the latest numbers. This is a very important day in the democratic primary with voters in 14 states casting ballots on this super tuesday. Results. I want to give you a look now at the states that have already been called. Both the associateded press and fox news have so far called two states. Bernie sanders notching a victory in his home state of vermont. No big surprise there. Joe biden picks up a big win in virginia. Obviously continuing from his South Carolina victor egetting a big bump from that win. We should also mention that fox news has called North Carolina, giving that state also to joe biden. Lets take a look at the numbers there in North Carolina. Excuse me, lets start with vermont. Bernie sanders picking up a big win here, 52 . Not really even close in his home state.
