New this morning, San Francisco police are investigating a hit and run crash that involved two people at a Mission District bus stop. Witnesses say a driver sped away after his car hit two homeless men who may have been sleeping at that bus stop. One witness was in a nearby tent. I was laying in my tent, and i heard an acceleration and then i heard it hit an object. As i was coming out, i realized the object was the trash can and the trash can hit the bus stop and the two people that were in it. Now, theres no word on the condition of the two people who were hurt. Its believed the hit and run driver was detained at 18th street and south van ness. A woman fought off an attack attacker at the bart station at the coliseum. A man was playing loud music and threatening other passengers. She got off the train with her mother and sister. The man followed them and attacked them inside an elevator. Some crazy guy was provocaling us and provoking us and next thing you know i had to defend myself. He was taking out a knife and tried to stab me so i maced him and put him down so he wouldnt hurt any of us. Bart police say the woman suffered a minor stab wound during that struggle. At this point, theres no word of arrest or charges in the case. The. Time is now 6 02. The attorney in the case of John Lee Cowell is present rebuttal witnesses. Now the defense rested its case in the trial of John Lee Cowell who admitted to the fatal stabbing of nia wilson in 2018. But his lawyers say cowell was delusional. They called several psychiatrists to testify saying cowell reported hearing voices and that he was suicidal. Nia wilsons sister latifa who was also attacked does not believe the insanity defense. Hes a drug addict. He continuously checked himself into mental homes just so he could either get cleaned up off the drugs that he used the days before or he wants to calm it down hes getting ready for his next usage. Cowell was thrown out of court for spouting profanities in court. Now hes refusing to come to court. Closing arms are due to begin in march. For the second straight day Mcclymonds High School will be closed. Results from an Environmental Testing of an area where a Petroleum Tank was removed last fall detected levels of tce in the ground water but not the drinking water. The School District held a Community Meeting last night to try to update students and parents. The levels were seeing here are just above the levels where there might be a problem. Theyre not at the levels where i think we should panic. We want them to test the entire school. Our kids are there. This is our future. Now, the School District nd through next week. Educators are looking for alternative sites for students to attend classes. The district will hold two more Community Forums this coming monday at west oakland middle school. The boyfriend of a former San Francisco sheriffs deputy now serving 30 months in prison on a gun charge thats related to a staged breakin at her home. 56yearold april meyers staged the burglary, then filed a 67,000 Insurance Claim for stolen items. Her boyfriend, 34yearold Antoine Fowler was later arrested for the theft. Investigators say meyers met fowler while he was in jail. Meyers was sentenced to 14 months in prison last november. We have some more details about the San Francisco bribery scandal involving mohamed nuru. Another City Employee sandra sinuga and she is identified as girlfriend one in the Court Documents who nuru traveled to south america and china. She reportedly told nuru in a phone conversation heard by federal agents that he should be careful about talking about his vacation home. Federal authorities charged nuru and a Restaurant Owner with alleged scheme of improper gifts and bribes to secure contracts. We are just off the 3rd avenue exit and behind me you can see those cars involved in the deadly crash. This is where they were towed. We know there were at least three vehicles involved. Chp officers say possibly a fourth as well. This happened just before 2 a. M. In the southbound lanes of highway 101. The chp first received calls of a solo vehicle collision. The driver of a toyota scion lost control and hit the center divide. Only a few minutes later the chp received more calls that a pedestrian was hit. Officers say the driver of a bmw got out of his vehicle while trying to assist on the scene. Put on his lights and appeared to be helping with visibility when the victim was struck. He is being identified as an adult male in his early 20s or 30s. Any time somebody does go out of their way to help or do something and essentially puts themselves in peril. We always recommend for any type of non injury collision especially to move off onto the righthand shoulder use that full safety restraint system. Any time youre in lanes you inherently take on a lot more risk. The driver of the scion was also badly injured and transported to stanford hospital. Oakland police chief Anne Kirkpatrick fired last night following a unanimous vote by the Police Commission. We have more details from ktvus christina rendon. We came over to city hall because this is where the meeting happened last night where they made that decision between the mayor and the Police Commission to unanimously vote to fire the police chief and they did that without cause. But, clearly, they were unhappy with her work and thought maybe her performance was lacking. The confidence has been lost in kirkpatrick over time. Rumors of the Police Chiefs termination were swirling yesterday. The announcement came shortly after 8 00 last night. Mayor libby schaaf says the trust between the police chief and the commission became broken. I believe there are many examples of ways she served our city extremely well over these three years, but i must respect the authority and role of our independent police cofaced crit since she took over the Department Three years ago amid a scandal involving three officers and a sex worker. The department had fallen behind in making reforms related to its use of force tactics. The monitor recommended that four officers be fired after the shooting death of joshua in 2018. But kirkpatrick says the officers were justified in using deadly force. There are a series of other issues that have just contributed to losing the confidence. Tesla is the highest ranking american car in the annual list of the best car brand coming in at number 11 out of 33 other brands. The tesla model 3 also picked as one of Consumer Reports top picks for 2020. Porsche is ranked best overall, followed by genesis and subaru.
