stump right here, but it was a completely full he tree. thousand they're able to finally lift that very big branch that fell on the roof off of it. the man who lives just below that unit said he had a feeling that tree was no match for yesterday's winds. jose cortez was home with his son, danny, when the wind started kicking up out of control. >> i tell my son,we've got to get out of here because i saw the big branch, and i think the branch is going to fall down. >> reporter: just about an hour later, neighbor duly burkhart says that's exactly what happened. >> i was reading and i heard this very loud boom. >> initially, the tree, when it fell, it took out the sprinkler system, which initiated the alarm. >> reporter: the man was asleep in the room. >> he was awoken by the insulation, and the waterfalling on him everywhere, and bed shaken. >> reporter: cortez bumped into the man. >> the branch was right here, because he's sleeping in the bed, and the branch right here. >> lucky day for him. >> reporter: all four units are emptied, and the building is red tagged. it was a busy day for fire crews as the winds had them running around sunday. >> we've been chasing wires around all morning, and of course, when we came around the corner, we saw the tree into the building, and realized we had a lot more going on than initially thought. >> reporter: he says the fire department responded to more than 80 calls due to the wind. >> i've never experienced the wind so bad in my life. it was just scary. i thought things were going to break. >> a look around the complex shows there are a lot of trees that butt up to porches and patios. burkhart says they're usually looked after. from they usually do that tree trimming, and it's been a while. i don't think we've had a tree trimming in a while. >> reporter: we've got the gentleman on the roof here, just trying it to be very careful, they've got all the precautions in place, but again, chipping away at some of those bigger branches, and the crane lifts it away, and gets it ready for the chipper. the reason this is so surprising to me, or interesting to see, there's a big hole in this roof here, so it's red tagged as well, so nobody can be inside. a bit of a scary situation, but again, they're talking all the precautions just to try to clear all of this out of here. the utilities have to be shut off. that's why everybody has to be out. at this point, there's no estimated time as to when everybody can go back inside and get all of their belongings. reporting live in livermore, i'm alison rodriguez, ktvu, fox 2 news. city crews in san francisco spent the day cleaning up tree limbs that fell off during yesterday's winds. with the trees crashing down on at least two cars, and also bringing down some power lines. no one was hurt, and the good news is th have improved today. let's bring in ktvu meteorologist, rosemaryorozco to look at some of these winds. >> some of the strongest gusts up to 80, 90 miles an hour. here they are. areas in mount st. helen reported 80 miles an hour yesterday. in the oakland hills, 62. we had widespread wind gusts 40 to 50 miles per hour, from san francisco, the peninsula, the east bay, and into the south bay. we have mount diablo still reporting 44 miles an hour. 20, 30 mile-per-hour winds pretty much for our hills today. with that, there is still an advisory for our north bay hills. that will last until tomorrow morning. let's take a look at some of the winds over areas like napa, and santa rosa. santa rosa reporting a gust to 26. it has been breezy pretty much for the entire day for areas in the nortreally driven up the temperatures for today as well. sfo reporting an onshore breeze at 15. central bay, south bay, the winds have dropped dramatically. over the north bay, still very breezy, and that wind advisory above 1,000 feet going into tomorrow morning, it expires at 11:00 a.m. we could see wind gusts 40, 50, even 60 miles per hour, moving into tonight and into tomorrow morning. when i come back, i'll have a look at the afternoon highs. for some, i think we will break records today, and take a look at your extended forecast coming up. >> rosemary, thank you. a major rally and protest this afternoon at berkeley high. students there are speaking out about what they call a dangerous culture of sexual harassment at their school. >> this protest follows a lawsuit the district says it received friday about an incident that allegedly took place on campus last year. greg liggens joining us live now from outside of ghschool wi protest today. >> reporter: yeah, alex, it was a very big event. now hundreds of students participated in that walkout, and rally this afternoon. it started on campus and then eventually made its way across the street to this park. now the students say they simply want to raise awareness about what they're calling a very dangerous culture of sexual harassment on campus, and something the administration isn't doing enough about. utah unitedded with the color red. hundreds rally to speak out against sexual violence. some students say harassments and assaults are occurring on and off campus, and the administration isn't doing enough to help it. >> the girls wrote in the bathroom, a list of boys to watch out for, and it was meant to be a list that students could add on to. >> reporter: regarding an alleged incident that happened on cam approximate pus, but won't provide details. >> california code prevents districts to expel a student when there's been a felony conviction. >> reporter: one parent said she's taking action. >> i'm taking measures to take my child out of this school. >> reporter: others say they've received no input from the school about lawsuits. students are speaking out because some say it's known that inappropriate behavior and worse is happening. >> it makes me pretty upset, especially because like i know some of the guys who havedone this sort of this thing, and a lot of their trends continue to defend them. it's disgusting. >> reporter: part of the students' action, creating a list of demands they plan to give to administratorsfor every single grade. we need training for teachers. and we need a clear process that everyone knows us, and that survivors understand, and can rely on what the administration will do, and what they can do. >> reporter: now some of the student organizers tell me they're going to begin working on that list of demands tonight, and they plan to present that list to the school board on february 14th. >> all right greg, thank you. san francisco's embattled public works director has resigned amid a federal construction propose. mohammed nuru he was arrested last month alongside nick bovas. both face fraud charges, bribe a san francisco airport commissioner. prosecutors also allege nuru was engaged in four other public corruption schemes. mayor london breed put out a statement about nuru's resignation. it says we can now move forward under new leadership. our goal is to continue to support the hard working employees of this department, and to continue its mission. i will continue to support the full investigation underway, and recommend reforms to ensure they never happen again. fremont police arrest a 40- year-old accused of backing into an officer's patrol car. spotting him in a honda accord that was reported stolen. pool fled, sliding onto the grounds of an apartment complex, where he backed into a police car. he abandoned the honda, and then ran off. officers eventually located pool nearby. police say they found shaved keys in the stolen car, and other items including a methamphetamine pipe. there was also a passenger inside the honda who was also cited on misdemeanor obstructing, or resisting arrest. the trial of john cowl resumed today in oakland. family members and friends cried as tashia wilson describes seeing her sisters bleeding after they were both stabbed by cowell while waiting to board a train. determining the cause of death was a stabbed wound to the neck, also testifying the knife hit her corotid artery. his defense attorney, says cowell suffers from schizophrenia. b.a.r.t. larged its ambassador program today, to try to make people feel safer when they're onboard the trains. the ambassadors will be in teams of two seven days a week. their main focus will be on trains between 12th street and oakland, and civic center in san francisco. during evening commute, the teams will increase coverage. they will respond to customers questions, complaints, and also requests for service. >> i don't take my phone now, because of all the stories that i've been hearing. i just keep my eyes open. i don't even have my headphones on. >> i would be worried about their ability to do anything, the ambassadors, to stop anything. but at least we have an idea, they're present on the platform and train and things like that. >> the ambassadors are not b.a.r.t. police officers, but they do carry radios to report safety and security concerns, or to call a police officer if law enforcement is necessary. grad students at uc santa cruz are calling for what they say is an indefinite wildcat strike over pay. they held a rally today, and at least one person was taken into custody by campus police. the grad students are demanding a cost of living adjustment of $1,412 a month on top of the average pay of more than $2,400. that's the amount of money they say will lift them out of rent burden. the grad students will stop teaching, grading, or doing research until uc administrators give them the increase. >> we know that the university, or faculty, they know in order to keep us, what do they have to do? pay us a decent wage, and give us a housing subsidy. >> rallies and marches also took place today at uc berkeley, uc davis, santa barbara, san diego, and ucla. the university has made two offers to the students, but both of them have been rejected. teachers in san ramon have authorized to strike if they can't come to an agreement with that district. the san ramon valley administration made the decision earlier today, adding 98.2% of its members voted in favor of authorizing a strike. >> our members do not want to strike, but they will. when solidarity is achieved, the best for our students. >> teachers say they're currently department is trying to figure out what started a deadly fire that broke out inside a home in east oakland tonight. >> reporter: the people living inside say up to seven people were staying here only four were home at the time of the fire, and unfortunately, one person did not make it out. >> i opened the kitchen door, because i heard some crackling, or popping and the fire was crawling across the ceiling. and it was black smoke just rolling through the house. it was in an instant. >> reporter: it was around 4:15, when the 911 calls started coming in. flames shooting into the night sky, coming from a home in east oakland, where several people were staying. >> i ran to the kitchen door, and i saw fire coming from the heater. so the big piece of plastic that leans against the heater and caused the fire. i ran and grabbed the plastic, and i pulled it through the house. when i went to run back up, the whole house started fire so fast. >> reporter: crews attacking it from the roof of a nearby home. >> we ended up having one patient as a male, 76 was transported to the hospital. >> reporter: another person died inside the house. that man's friends said he went by the name billy, and was well known in the neighborhood. >> he was a close friend to everybody. really good guy, we'll miss him a lot. >> reporter: that family was allowed back inside. officials say there were a lot of plastics and petroleum based materials here that burned in the fire. it is under investigation, and the red cross is helping people that were displaced. firefighters in is sonoma county are investigating a fire in bodega. it was started at a home on salmon creek road. the hole was in flames, and firefighters were not able to pull the victim out of the fire until the fire was under control. the victim's name has not been released, but officials tell us that the man is in his 70s. coming up here on the 4, the state of new hampshire is the place to be for presidential hopefuls hopes to shake up the democrats. in manchester, new hampshire, fox news. amazon says it's seeking a deposition from president trump in its lawsuit against the pentagon over the awarding of a multibillion dollar contract to its competitor, microsoft. the suit alleges, the president pressured mark esper to deny the contract. the defense department says it opposes the request for a deposition. two police officers were wounded, and a suspect is dead in a shooting at a wal-mart store in arkansas earlier this morning. police responded to a call of a customer who was making threats. the officer's approached that suspect who then opened fire, both officers were hit. they fired back, and hit the suspect. the two injured officers were taken to a hospital there in memphis. we're told they are are said to be okay. the suspect was known to police. forest city is about 100 miles east of little rock. locals in thailand are remembering the 29 people killed in the city's worst massacre in history. the suspect, a thai soldier were reportedly angry over a real estate deal gone bad. that's when authorities say he killed his commanding officer at a private home. authority also say he stole three assault rifles, two machine guns, and a military vehicle, and headed to a buddhist temple, where he killed nine people. the rampage continued at the mall. an hours long standoff ended when security forces shot and killed the man. >> translator: i felt scared because the incident just happened. i'm not sure if that feeling will fade away. >> reporter: today soldiers and volunteers spent the day cleaning blood spills from the mall. lax base security at the army's headquarters in bangkok. the death toll from the coronavirus has climbed to 900, and all but two of those cases are in mainland china. >> now seeing more cases of the deadly coronavirus in people with no history of travel to china. fox'sjonathan ferry has more from atlanta. >> reporter: the deadly coronavirus is still very gooding, and people are scrambling to contain it. more than 40,000 now testing positive, causing over 900 deaths. the world health organization now expressing new concerns about the spread of the virus outside of china. >> we have seen some concerning instances of onward transmission. this small number of cases could be this park that becomes a bigger file. >> reporter: restrictions are now in place for travelers from china, a cruise ship finally setting sail monday after passengers returning on it showed coronavirus symptoms. they've since been cleared, but it's a different story in japan, where thousands remain trapped on a cruise ship. at least 135 passengers have tested positive for coronavirus. the rest remain confined to their rooms, except for short fresh air breaks. >> we weather service out of reno. mammoth mountain summit reported 145 miles per hour. that's in areas closer to yosemite if you aren't familiar with that. squall valley also reported a wind gust at 100 miles per hour. for us, the winds have come down considerably. in the east bay hills, the wind dozen continue to blow, not quite as strong as what we saw yesterday. mount st. helena, still reporting 44. middle peak, 16. we have a wind advisory that will remain in place. santa rosa reporting a 26 mile- per-hour gust at the airport there. fairfield reporting a 28 mile- per-hour gust. so for folks that are driving along i-80, when you have that wind coming in from the north, and you're driving this direction like this, the wind is hitting up against your car, so it could be a little bit hazardous out there for folks, holding tight to the wheel this afternoon. the ridge of high pressure locked in. we're not going to see any rain come our way, unfortunately. we typically get any prosecute from 3 to 6 inches of rainfall for the month of february, and so far we haven't seen a drop. as we go through the next week, through valentine's day, and into the weekend, we do look to that flaring. around 4:30 this morning, the refinery notified contra costa county health about flaring at the plant. chevron found no evidence of offsight odor. chevron said it evacuated some works from the unit. no other part of the refinery was affected. but the contra costa department did go to the refinery to monitor the flare. some california university students will soon be able to do community service to help pay for college. dominican university of california along with seven private and public universities announced the program today. health and nutrition education, and housing advocacy and support. dominican will award each first year fellow up to $100,000 in scholarship money over four years. state and federal governments will contribute about $3.2 million to support the
