I am told thats the world record for number of likes on for a farsi language tweet. Unlike past administrations where there hasnt been support demonstrated the iranian people, he has made it clear that he stands for the people of iran and not with the regime and we are going to continue to do so. Chris that has been quite a debate this week about the president justifications for taking out iranian general Qassem Soleimani, he has said that there was an imminent threat. Chris members of congress who attended a 75 minute briefing with the secretaries of state, defense, cia directors say there was not a single mention during those 75 minutes, members of congress about imminent threats to u. Something weve been clear iran and ive seen the intelligence on this and it was very strong and in some ways, i would love to release the intelligence and show the American People that they can trust the administration on this. Unfortunately, we dont want to lose that valuable stream of intelligence that will allow us to protect americans going forward. What weve always said and what i said from day one is that there are severe threats to american diplomats, two american soldiers and two american facilities in the region, likely syria and potentially other countries that i wont name now. So i think with the president said is consistent with what weve been saying since day one. Chris it does seem to be a contradiction. He is telling Laura Ingraham, our esteemed colleague but in a 75 minute classified briefing, your top National Security people never mention this to members of congress, why not . I wasnt at the briefing and i dont know how it w and forth, depends on the questions, i dont know, i wasnt there. All i can tell you was weve been clear from the start to American Military us officials officers and men and women and also to u. S. Diplomats and i think that is consistent with what the president is saying. Chris would you agree with what the president said that there were specific imminent threats to for u. S. Embassies . It is always difficult to know exactly what the targets are but it certainly is consistent with the intelligence to assume they would have hit embassies and least four countries. But we know there were threats to american facilities, weather bases, embassies, it is always hard until the attack happens but we had very strong intelligence, they were looking to kill and maim americans that u. S. Facilities in the region. So i think the president is absolutely right wh about the threats to america that came from soleimani and came from their proxies. Chris i want to step back a little bit and talk about the whole question of the dealing with iran. The u. S. Imposed still more sanctions on iran on friday and a secretary of state, secretary of treasury said you have two goals, you want iran to behave like other nations in the world and you want them to stop their nuclear program, but lets look at the record so far, the administration has now imposed sanctions on more than 1,000 iranian companies, organizations, and individuals. Back in september, the treasury secretary said we have cut off all funding to iran but instead of caving in, iran is moving stepbystep o o attacked saudil facilities and set fire to the u. S. Embassy in baghdad. You said this week and in an interview with axios that you think iran is now more likely to negotiate but the maximum Pressure Campaign if you look at the last six months designated them more aggressive, not less aggressive. I think its working, the iranian economy is contracted by at least 10 , we havent seen that in many, many years. Iran went from producing three to 4 Million Barrels of oil a day down to 150 to 400,000 barrels depending on the day. Iran is being choked off and is going but to come to the table. Chris i agree with all of that but they havent been less aggressive, they havent indicated theyre going to come to the table, and fact they have been more aggressive and they are pulling out of the nuclear deal so why do you say as you have said this weekend you think that they are now more likely to negotiate . Iran is being choked off and there is no other way for them to get the money they need to fund the guard, to fund the regime and their maligned activities and you are seeing protest breaking out across iran and we have seen it for several months, people are fed up with this regime. They want to maintain a modern country the mother going to have to come to the table and negotiate, thats highly likely. Chris i remember in september, President Trump was at the u. N. , i interviewed the iranian president , the president and the french president were trying to get on the phone and talk and he refused to do so, i will tell you he said at that time to me there was no chance we are going to negotiate unless sanctions. I think secretary esper has done a terrific job of reviewing the way that we vet foreign troops to come over and train with americans, we have a longstanding relationship to train the pilots, we work with them both in saudi arabia. Obviously pensacola showed there have been errors in the way that we have vetted and i think out of abundance of caution, he is taking these actions to protect our servicemen and women. President trump says he didnt notify the congressional leader, the gang of eight, the majority and minority leaders, the heads of the intelligence committees beforehand about the attack on soleimani basically because he didnt trust them. Iran appears to be standing down which is a good thing for all parties concerned in a very good thing for the world. Chris is in it possible that President Trumps action, out one of our worst enemies in the middle east and reestablished american deterrence . It certainly took out one of our worst enemies in the middle east, none of us are going to mourn the passing of general Qassem Soleimani, the force which he commanded was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of americans in iraq and throughout the region, so nobody should be mourning his passing. But the larger question is, does it make us safer . The did make our position more stable and is there a Clear Strategy for moving forward . President trump ran in no small part on ending the wars in the middle east but we have more troops in the middle east and the prospect you were just discussing with the National Security advisor of our being expelled from iraq, thats been one of his core iraq and chris wouldnt you at least concede that President Trump, and i know there was a lot of concern, this is going to get us into a war that so far the iranians have as the president said stood down, said we dont want to escalate the situation and maybe it made things better, not worse . This is an opening to show there is a path towards negotiation and towards reengagement with iran about what a stronger, better, longer Iran Nuclear Deal might look like and i hope they will take it. My concern is that iran has lots of ways that they can take action against us both over and clover and i dont think they are done or trying to seek revenge. The real question in front of us i think is whether or not President Trump and his Senior Administration officials believe that before taking action that predictably over months iran, to come to congress to seek authorization. So we were told repeatedly that there was a reliable intelligence of an imminent threat. Thats it. There was no more detail than te president has been co larger point about the consultation with congress, working with congress on a bipartisanrring iran, that is the bigi will remind you, President Trump has taken some very impulsive, even erratic moves in the middle east recently. Is decision to abandon our kurdish allies in syria led to hundreds of ices fighters being released, led to a number of our close European Partners in the counter ices campaign to be frustrated with us. So some skepticism on the part of congress about whether or not there really is a thorough and deliberate strategy here i think is justified. There is no question that as part of the Iran Nuclear Deal, the deal that john kerry and barack obama negotiated, iran got back billions of dollars in frozen assets and that it use hr actors around the middle east. Would you be willing to concede that as part of the president s maximum Pressure Campaign that at least they turned off the terror money spigot . There has been a real impact on the iranian economy and the Resources Available as a result of the maximum Pressure Campaign. Chris so that is a success. Heres the negative that is happening at the same time, a real weakening of our alliances and our partnerships. What made the iran deal possible was getting most of the world aligned with the United States and putting sanctions pressure on iran. Its thats what got them to the table. Now we are in a place where sident trump is saying here is a moment for diplomacy, we need nato more engaged in the middle east, we is taking in the last fewosalle partnerships. In his recent incident has further strained some of our partnerships with germany, france, u. K. In the region and we need them if we are going to build a stronger next iran deal. How confident are you if not at beginning at some point that you can get for republicans to come over and agree with the democrats to call key witnesses . Thats what this is all going to come down to is majority leader mcconnell is going to give us as much of a fair trial as four republican senators demand. There was a key difference between trials and coverups, trials have witnesses, coverups dont. President trump mightve had his reason of being skeptical of the house process. In a republicancontrolled senate, i cant think of any reason he wouldnt want folks like secretary of state pompeo National Security advisor john bolton who were in the room, who were on the email chains, who know what happened to come to the senate, testifying clear his name. He is exonerated in the senate by a purely partisan vote, i dont think you will have been exonerated at all and this is only the third time in our nations history that we are going to have an impeachment trial. No. At this point, there is just conversations trying to find some reasonable bipartisan path forward to insist on a fair trial. I respect that there are republicans who deeply want President Trump to have a fair trial, i think thats what all of us should want but to have a trial where the critical witnesses were blocked by the president from appearing in front of the is no closest advisors to cooperate and in the clinton impeachment trial, there was sworn testimony that they were debating about how it would be presented. Chris i have a minute left, President Trump says if John Bolton John bolton is subpoenaed and if john bolton agrees to testify, he wont allow him to discuss their conversations about ukraine, take a look. I would love everybody to testify, but there are things that you cant do from a standpoint of executive privilege, you have to maintain them. Chris would any president allow his National Security advisor to discuss the conversations they had over National Security in the oval office . If that National Security advisor could clear his name by doing so, i think most president s would. The executive privilege doesnt exist to allow you to cover up a crime. Cuts with the president is being accused of here. You should want the former National Security advisor to testify truthfully in front of the senate. Chris there are a lot of ifs here. Bolton is allowed to testify and the president invokes executive privilege, your response would be what . You can invoke executive privilege to cover up a crime, john bolton should testify.
