Military leader, Something Like this was going to happen. I was briefed on friday, and did not believe that the intelligence that the president cited just about any imminent c2 take out such a senior leader. Something that we have never, we have not done since 1944 when we shut down a plane with the japanese admiral. It was really on a precedented act of escalation and it clearly has put us in harms way, american servicemembers, who do not deserve to be running for their lives right now. Again, all this set of by the u. S. Strike that killed the top Iranian Military leader, Qassem Soleimani, invited last week. They had evidence that he was planning attacks on american. Secretary of state mike pompeo said, the u. S. Was prepared to act if iran retaliated. Joining us now is dr. The director of iranian studies at stanford. First of all, professor, your reaction to all of this. I am surprised, i am saddened. Lives might be lost in all of this. This morning, listening to the iranian media and on the statements made by Iranian Military commanders. I wasnt surprised, they have sort of completely put themselves in the corner that anything other than an attack on u. S. Military base and a very clear attack on u. S. Military base by Iranian Military, in other words, they were very clear they want no effort to hide their hand in all of this. And having read President Trumps earlier tweets that u. S. Would retaliate strongly, both countries might have put themselves in a position where escalation might not be avoidable. Leads to my next question, what happens next year . Do you think this is just beginning and that the president will not retaliate . The reports indicated that the investigation of damages which show that theres been no u. S. Loss of lives and that the president would decide that this would not require full attack. He indicated earlier that if theres any attack, u. S. Would take out two sites. He had initially suggested cultural sites but back then on that. This morning, if that happens, i think we are in for a much larger confrontation. I hope, there is no loss of lives. I hope that the u. S. Will find a way to deescalate. I dont think iran wants a full war. They cant afford it. If they are put in a position that they have to either respond and escalate or be humiliated, i think they would escalate. In your opinion, professor, what would be the appropriate response by the u. S. . The appropriate response, i think it would depend on how much damage done. If there are loss of lives, i think event that the president has treated before, and the rhetoric that had come out of washington, he might have no choice but to order attacks on iranian sites and might be that if there are such attacks, iran would expand its response and at that other u. S. Bases. This morning, they literally published the report that iranian media that they have all of your spaces in this region, all 28 of them, but 70 dozen u. S. Soldiers, within arms range. So, if there is an attack on iran, and extensive attack on iran, i wouldnt be surprised if they decide to respond and another announcement they made, a few hours ago, is that they dont see israel as separate from the United States in all of this. So, if they decide to retaliate against israel, if they begin to engage their syria and lebanon to engage an attack israel. Israel would become involved and then, we are in a much, much wider more dangerous territory. Professor, you can of touch on this but let me be blunt, do you think we are headed for an all out war with iran . My hope is still that we are not because if they said, i dont think President Trump really wants an all out war. That has been one consistent element of this foreignpolicy. I dont think the Iranian Regime could afford her what a full war but mostly, it is in iran and they have cornered themselves with the rhetoric that might leave no option. Leaving no way to deescalate without feeling like you have compromised too much. I hope, they find this way to deescalate otherwise, i truly believe that we are in for a very bloody and very costly war. Professor, how do you think this is playing out in the streets of iran. Are people there celebrating, do you think . I dont think so. We dont have any indication yet about this but remember, last few days, iran has seen some of the biggest demonstrations in favor of mr. Qassem soleimani being killed. Millions of people with some account, several hundred thousand people by some account, have come out to support Qassem Soleimani. And remember, if you try to understand the context with this decision and why it was in my view, wrong decision, because just days ago, several hundreds thousands of people came out industries of iran demonstrating against this regime. The regime, how to put it, literally, they killed more than 1000 people, rested several thousand more but now, because of his attack, because of how people saw this as an aggression against the general and although, he was out of the regime, structure of oppression, he was also someone who had been finding the right. Someone who the regime had the right to create a revered image of and as a response, millions of people came out in favor or several hundred thousands, nobody knows, the regime exaggerates and says several million, the Iranian Opposition says it was all concocted. I dont think it was all concocted. So, i dont think anybody is celebrating. The idea that people would celebrate an American Invasion as much as a statement of imagination, it was imagine that iraqis would celebrate and embrace u. S. When the u. S. Invaded. People generally dont like the countries to be invaded. People generally are afraid of war and people are afraid of becoming caught as collateral. My sense is that people in every conversation ive had, since all this began, people are afraid of it expanding and they are afraid of being confronted.
