Theyve been here earl 84 this morning. And they are doing an Assembly Line of the meals. And it looks like the potatoes that is now on its side which means we are probably getting low on that end. And they will have to put in the second shift of potatoes. They are moving along pretty quickly. There are more than 4,000 meals that will be packaged here and hand delivered to thousands of San Francisco residents who cannot leave their homes either to illness or age. Now we have more than 500 volunteers coming to pick up these meals and deliver them. There are some longtime volunteers that are here. We did meet a guy in the first hour named zach who is here with both of his parents. We have also met tourists from germany that came early to help out. We were thinking what to do with our christmas. And we thought about giving back to the community. Its very easy. I texted melissa and i just got the confirmation that we can help. And now we are here. Reporter the deliveries will start at 8 00. That is when they will take off and hand deliver them to all thefamilies for this christmas season. We did want to point out that because the november thanksgiving came a little bit later, some of the donations were down for the bell ringers. They are really stressing end of the year donations to the Salvation Army. That way they can prepare ahead to next year. Donations are down a little bit this year. Two homicide detectives are investigating a deadly shooting in San Francisco. Just before 11 30 last night officers responded to reports of gunfire at jones and oh fail. They found a 29yearold man with gunshot wound to his upper body. A 23yearold woman was shot in the ankle. She has since been released from the hospital. Police are not saying if anyone has been detained in connection to this incident. Or the relationship among the three people. We are following developing news about a shooting in vallejo. A sixyearold boy is hospitalized in six Critical Condition. The boy was with his family celebrating Christmas Eve. Police received reports of gunshots when they arrived at that scene they couldnt find any victims. The childs family had taken the little boy to the hospital. Witnesses say it appeared the child had been shot several times. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call vallejo police. Fire crews in oakland have obtained a house fire. The fire was reported just after midnight on Martin Luther king junior way. You can see from the video firefighters had to get up on the roof to get access to that fire. There is no word on what kind of damage happened. No word of the cause of the fire. We are still working to find out if anyone was injured. A man is dead after his car crashed into a tree in antioch. The man was going abdomen 80 miles an hour. They say he slammed into a tree and the car wrapped around it because of the force of the impact. Police say that stretch of road has several curves and they have reports the man was weaving in and out of traffic. He cut in front of me to get around him. I think he waited too long. When he tried to get in the next lane and started fish taling. Police are not releasing the mans name but say he is from antioch. There was no one else in the car and no other drivers or pedestrians were hurt. A murder trial will go on for the man accused of stabbing a teenager to death. After three psychological evaluations, a judge has found john cowell mentally competent to stand trial. His attorneys say cowell has showed new stomps. But the family of the victim says they dont buy the Mental Health issue claim. They believe he is prolonging his fate at trial. I was just happy that the criminal proceedings didnt get suspended again. So that was like good for us. The judge did order a fourth mental evaluation out of an abundance of caution. Cal will meet with a psychologist in january. People are stepping up to help a south bay church that was robbed in broad daylight and in front of a security camera. Surveillance footage shows two people entering the our lady of guadalupe church. They pretended to ask a question to a cleaning lady. And when her back was turned, they took off with a collection box filled with money. The proceeds were earmarked for toys that would be distributed to kids in the congregation its not our money. This was the money of the children. It was to buy gifts for them. And you are robbing not only money, but gifts for children. The church thinks 2,000 to 3,000 was stolen. Thieves also stole a donation box. But heres where the kindness of strangers is coming through in the holidays. A go fund me page has raised nearly 9,000. The bay area air Quality Management district says wood smoke contains fine particles and cancer causing substances that can make the air unhealthy to breathe. Most are operating on sunday schedule. Including vta, ac transit, caltrains, and smart train. And some agencies are not operating at all on this holiday. They include ace train, Contra Costa County connection, and golden gate transit. There is no service on the ferry blue and gold fleet or the San Francisco bay ferry. And the city of San Francisco has a gift for drivers. There is no enforcement of Street Parking today. That includes parking meters, residential parking permits, and yellow, white, and green zones. That is historically what the napa valley is about. When that goes away, the soul of napa valley that can go away. Reporter ken worries about the future of his farm. He wants his daughter to take over the business but says napa countys permitting process makes it hard to get their wine in front of the consumer. Currently the regulations favor big business. You are encouraged to go big or go home in napa. And its creating an environment where small vineyard owners like us, we dont have a chance. Reporter as it stands, the current winery definition ordnance prohibits the build of a tasting room unless its connected to a winery. We have to construct a production facility. A minimum cost of 5 million. No way it makes any sense. I welcome big business. I welcome small business. I feel like there is enough room in napa for every. I just wish that the regulations in napa supported that. Reporter no tasting rooms, no sales on site means fewer chances to get their wine out there. With this in mind, they joined save the family farms. A group of small farm ownerswants to add a resolution to help these microwineries find a pathway to tasting in the county and survival among the large wineries in town. More than 200 small family farms have sold to corporations. It goes to show you that there is a problem here. Wed have to take on investors, that is not something we should have to consider. The Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office has released the name of the suspect that was shot and killed in a Convenient Store robbery. He was 31 years old. Surveillance video shows andrew and another man walk into cams market. One of them, we see andrew hit the clerk in the head with a gun and took money from the Cash Register. The clerk reached far gun and fired one shot. Andrew ran out of the store but died less than a block away. A second man has not been located yet. A police chase ended with a man being rescued from the american river. It started when a Patrol Officer tried to make a traffic stop but the driver pulled over. The driver stopped his car and jumped into the river to try to fete away. The man slammed through a pillar and tried to get away. Oakland police set up a new Safe Exchange zone outside of its headquarters. This area is for people buying or selling items. People are dealing with strangers so hay need a safe place for the transaction. Whether you are buying a bike, selling a cell phone, or taking part in a child custody exchange. A surveillance camera will also be recording. We want people to be safe on both sides of the transaction. Any time you teal with money and goods, there is an opportunity for a theft to occur. Or robbery. What we want to do is avoid that at all costs. The main Oakland Police station is on seventh street near broadway. Just look for the green curb in front. This zone will be well lit. Police in San Francisco rescued a man after a man tried to rob a mcdonalds. At the fast food restaurant. Police say witnesses told them the man entered the mcdonalds, showed a gun, and tried to open a Cash Register. When he couldnt get into that register, he ran away. A San Francisco Tenderloin Police officer is recovering his morning after he was injured chasing a suspect. Sfpd says the officer was attempting to stop a drug dealer when the officer was injured. The owner of an east bay hair salon says she is amazing no one was seriously hurt. If you look at the top right side of the surveillance video, you can see a car pull into a parking spot, right here, slams over the curb and into the salon. The salon was filled with customers and workers who had Christmas Eve appointments and shoppers all around the busy shopping center. I literally saw the car hit the curb, get airborne, and go right through the window. Righfront door. We had two people in the lobby when it happened. And they went flying. One woman had a hip replacement. It was amazing she was able to get out of the way. The back wall of the salon stoppeds car from going into the area. Witnesses say the driver of the car was an older man and he wasnt hurt. But he looked very confused when he got out of the car. What caused the crash is still under investigation. Reporter guide dogs for the blind is a Nonprofit Organization that breeds, trains, and partners guide dogs with people that need them. Ceo christine says the goal is simple. To give independence to those people that are either blind or visually impaired. And we do that through the use of a well Trained Service dog. Reporter but achieving that goal is a lot of work. Guide work is the most complicated of service work. It takes the best of the best. Reporter it involves volunteer puppy raisers like Cordelia Wolf who teaches the dogs basic housemanners and exposes them to real life scenarios. We follow the protocols in terms of what she can be exposed to. She has been on the ferry. Shes been on the smart train. Reporter and then comes the real guide dog training. Which takes several months. And his trainer jeff gray explains it requires cooperation. Not just from the dog. Its a team work process. Where the dog is there to guide them around obstacles, but its the individual handler that is leading the team and giving the directions and knowing where they are going to be going. Reporter guide dogs for the blind breeds about 900 puppies every year, but only a third of the dog and handler teams graduate. Needing and getting to know and being a part of this has completely changed my life. Reporter graduate mary says all the work is worth it to have her threeyearold black lab shiloh. When his harness is on, he takes his job of safeguarding me and helping me navigate the world very safely. When his harness is off, he is an adorable, cudly puppy. Its really hard to become a guide dog. Reporter the six episode series comes a year after the release of the successful feature length documentary with the same name. I cried from just about beginning to end. Because its such a wonderful reminder of our experience here. A deadly crash happened earlier this morning at westbound 80 at gilman street in berkeley. Around 5 30 this morning. We just got off the phone with the chp and the Highway Patrol says they hope to reopen all westbound lanes of interstate 80 at gilman by 8 00 this morning. In the next 1015 minutes or so. The chp says this collision involves four cars, one of those folk vehicles caught on fire. The first car spun out on the wet roadway around 5 20 this morning and got stalled. A person in a second car pulled over to help. This person was described as a Good Samaritan. Moments late aerothird vehicle drove and sideswiped those first two vehicles and a fourth car came and broadsided the vehicles and caught fire. The driver of that third car was pronounced dead at the scene. Its unclear if it was due to the crash or the fire. People in the other vehicles suffered minor injuries. Those wet roads can be very, very dangerous. But taking a live look outside, it doesnt seem like its raining anymore. You are right. We have mainly dry conditions. At least no rain falling from the sky in many areas. We will remain with scattered showers in the forecast for today. As we continue through the afternoon and then we will dry out by tonight. Can i get a dozen and a half of pork. People were lined up ready to pick up tamales yesterday. The owner says by the time they close today, they will have sold 30,000 tamales. Everyone we spoke with in line say they have been going there for years. Its tradition. Its our cultural tradition. Every year we get together and put it all together and have family together. Boom. We celebrate christmas. My mouth is watering just looking at those. Preorders for tamales closed on december 20th. And today there is only 3,000 tamales that will be available to the public once the doors open. Some of the homeless in san jose were treated to a christmas meal and holiday gift bags. Others in the area were served a catered meal. They were given backpacks full of essentials to help those deal with the cold weather season. A reality they faced last night. And the Christmas Presents are survival kits. Batteries, flashlights, trail mix, oranges, lip balm, socks, things that people need during this time. The bags have a reflective strip so people can be more visible to drivers while they are Walking Around at night. Ktvu is teaming up with Community Volunteers to collect donations for one warm coat. Earlier this morning ktvu met volunteers with the Salvation Army that got up early to help pack these meals. Lets get to Leigh Martinez who will explain where she is right now. Reporter we are just down the street on Fourth Street to a different facility to meet a different set of volunteers. These volunteers here will be the ones delivering the meals to all the families. And they are all gathering up in line. They all notice they are on tv right now. These volunteers will be the ones delivering the meals. They are coming into this room here. This is where they will get their routes, their delivery routes. And the list of names that they will be needing. Weve been doing this for more than 50 years here. So theyve packed more than 4,000 meals. Packaged, hand delivered to thousands of san franciscan residents that cannot leave their homes. Either due to illness or age. We have more than 500 volunteers out here today. We saw some of the volunteers in the other facility that were packaging up the meals. We have a new group of volunteers that will be delivering the meals to the families. Some of these volunteers are veterans. Theyve been doing these for years. Others we have met a couple tourists from germany that came early to help out. While the salvation of army relies on an they also need donations. Donations were down this year. And the Salvation Army hopes to make that up by the end of the year. Weve had a shorter Holiday Season because thanksgiving was late to this year. Which affected us at the kettles. We had six less days. So we are a little down right now. 3 with the year end giving to come, we are encouraging people to give at the end of the year here. So again they lost six days of bell ringing because the thanksgiving holiday came a little bit later this year. And of course we have some rain too. So they are really hoping to get the end of the year donations. That money will be used again to fund their thanksgiving and christmas meal deliveries. So again we are out here looking to delivering the meals starting at just in a few minutes. Well start getting the volunteers ready to go out and deliver these meals. We have an update on that deadly crash weve been telling you this morning that happened in berkeley. All lanes of westbound interstate 880 in gilman has reopened. Traffic is moving in both directions. This collision involved about four vehicles at 5 20 this morning. One of the vehicles caught fire. New this morning, homicide detectives are investigating a deadly shooting in San Francisco. Just before 11 30 last night, officers responded to reports of gunfire at jones and oh fail. He was later pronounced dead at the scene. A 30yearold man was getting treated after he was hit in the head by an object. Sixyearold boy is hospitalized in Critical Condition after a shooting. The boy was with his family celebrating Christmas Eve. Police received reports of gunfire in the area around 6 30 last night. When police arrived, they couldnt find any victims. The childs family had already taken the boy to the hospital apt that time. Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call vallejo police. Fire crews in oakland have contained a house fire. This is video from citizen app. The fire was reported just after midnight on Martin Luther king junior way. Firefighters are seen accessing the roof of this home to get to the fire. We are still working to gather more information about what caused this fire, and whether anyone was inside or injured. A man is dead after his car crashed into a tree this antioch. The man was going about 80 miles an hour on hill crest avenue between via dora and wild flower drive. You can see that video here. Police say that stretch of road has a lot of curves and they have reports the man was weaving in and out of traffic. He cut in front of me to get around him. I think he waited too long. When he tried to get in the next lane he started fish tailing and pingponging. Misare not releasing the mans name, but say he is from antioch and may have had other contact with him. There was no one else in the car. And no other drivers or pedestrians were hurt. A murder trial will go on for the man accused of stabbing teenager to death last year. A judge has found john cowell mentally competent to stand trial. His attorneys had argued that cowell had shown new symptoms of psychological illness. The family of the victim says they dont buy the Mental Health issue claims. They believe he is just delaying the start of a trial. I was just happy that the criminal proceedings didnt get suspended again. So that was good for us. The judge did order a fourth mental evaluation out of an abundance of caution. The criminal trial is expected to start early next year. People are stepping up to help a south bay church that was robbed in broad daylight and in front of a security camera. Surveillance footage shows two people entering our lady of guadalupe church. They pretended to ask a question to someone, when her back was turned, they took off with a direction box filled with money from selling holiday candles. The proceeds were earmarked for toys that would be given to kids in the congregation. Its not our money. This was the money of the children. It was to buy gifts for them. And you are robbing not only money, but gifts for children. The church thinks 2,000 to 3,000 was taken. The thieves stole a donation box. For nearly the last 40 years, the same family has owned these 28 acres. Nestled in the nasa valley. The small farmer, that is the character of the napa valley. That is historically what the napa valley is about. When that goes away, the soul of napa valley that can go away. Reporter ken worries about the future of his farm and napa losing his roots. He wants his daughter to take over the business, but the permitting process makes it hard to get their wine in front of the consumer. Currently the regulations favor big business. You encouraged to go big or go home in napa. And its creating an environment where small vineyard owners like us, we just dont have a chance. As it stands, the current winery definition ordnance prohibits the building of a tasting room in an agricultural zone like this unless its connected to a winery. Wed have to construct a production facility. A minimum cost of 5 million. No way it makes any sense. I welcome big business. I welcome small business. I feel like there is enough room in napa for everyone. And i just wish that the regulations in napa supported that. Reporter no tasting rooms, no sales on site means fewer chances to get their wine out there. With this in mind, they joined save the family farms. The group of small farm owners wants to add a resolution to help these micro wineries find a pathway to tastings in the county. And survival among the large wineries in top. Just about 200 small family farms have sold to corporations in the last five years. That just goes to show you there is a problem here. We have to take on investors and that is not something we should have to consider. We just want to keep the family farm going and be economically viable for generations to come. Reporter the group says they are seeing opposition and support. They hope to present their proposal in the new year. The Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office released the name of a man shot and killed in a Convenient Store robbery. He was identified as michael andrew. Surveillance video shows andrew and another man walking into cams market on port chicago highway in bay point. In that video you can see andrew hit the clerk in the head with the gun. He then took money from the Cash Register but the clerk reached for a gun and fired one shot. Andrew ran out of the store but died less than a block away. A police chase through downtown San Francisco ended with a suspect being rescued from the american river. It started when a Patrol Officer tried to make a traffic stop but the driver refused to pull over. Instead there was a three mile chase to interstate five that driver led police on. The driver stopped his car and crashed into the river to try to get away. The West Sacramento Police Department used its boat to get to the man. He was arrested and could face several charges. Oakland police set up a new Safe Exchange zone. This area is for people buying or selling items through social media. People are dealing with strangers so they need a safe place for their transactions. Whether you are buying a bike, selling your cell phone, or taking part in a child custody exchange. Surveillance camera will also be recording. We want people to be safe. On both sides of the transaction. Any time you deal with money and goods, there san opportunity for a theft to occur. Or robbery. What we want to do is avoid that at all costs. It is located on seventh street near broadway. The zone will be well it will at all times. Police in San Francisco have arrested a man after he tried to rob a mcdonalds. Police say witnesses told him the man entered the mcdonalds, showed a gun, and tried to open a register. When he couldnt get into the register, he ran away. Police found him a short time ago and arrested him. Sfpd says the officer was attempting to stop a drug deal when he was injured. The officer is okay and is back home with his family. The owner of an east bay hair salon says she is amazed no one was hurt when a car ran into the salon. Right here is when it slams over the curb and into the salon. The salon was filled with customers. I literally saw the car hit the curb, go airborne, and go right through the window. We have two people in the lobby when it happened. And they went absolutely flying. One woman just had a hip replacement. Its amazing she was able to get out of the way. The back wall of the salon stopped the car will from going into the area. Witnesses say the driver of the car was an older man and he wasnt hurt, but they say he looked really confused when he got out of the car. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. It is the first time after 1,400 years that a piece of the original crib comes back to bethlehem. Bethlehem marked the Christmas Holiday with a new arrival from the vatican. Parishioners gathered to celebrate the birth of jesus and offer prayers of peace through the region. The vatican sent a small piece of wood believed to be from the crib that jesus has laid in. President trump and First Lady Melania Trump attended a Christmas Eve mass at a church in west palm beach. The Service Included singing carols and reading scripture. Afterwards the family attended a dinner at the country club. And the Christmas Holiday may offer a bit of a break from the impeachment debate. But as doug luzader explains, some key players have Big Decisions to make on the path forward. Reporter the president may now stand impeached, but the path forward for congress is unclear. While a looming, if Uncertain Senate trial is unnerving for the president , his potential 2020 opponents are also a bit stuck in as we face this trial in the senate, if the president claims that he is so innocent, than why doesnt he have all the president s men testify . And that vote will play out over the next several weeks. Reporter but when . A number of democrats seeking their partys nomination are sitting u. S. Senators and they would have to take part in a senate trial. That would force them off the campaign trail just as they should be gearing up for early nominating contests. And they are not the only ones waiting with baited breath. It does say that the chief justice has to preside over the senate trial. People need to know that we are not doing politics. Reporter john roberts may like to steer clear of politics, but it may be impossible to ignore him when it becomes his venue. I think what he can expect is a largely scripted trial that is going to be run by the senate leadership. Reporter but President Trump is the third person to go through this process. If you will be heading out near the coastline for today, there is a beach hazard advisory for areas to the west, north west facing beaches. It goes until tomorrow morning for sneaker waves as well as rip currents. So be careful if you plan on going for a run or taking the dog for a walk. Heres a look at Storm Tracker two. There is a four hour time lapse. Early this morning how it really pushed through, brought us the wide spread rain. Moderate at times. Lightning strikes reported over areas of the north bay. An east bay family is looking forward to the new year. They hope their threeyearold son will get the answer she needs. Reporter threeyearold landon keeps everyone on their toes. For me hes the little boy that i didnt know that we needed. Reporter after two decades of marriage and three kids, landon was a surprise. When he was born, they were 12, 14, 16 years old. Reporter when they told the kids, their reaction had this video going viral. The pregnancy went well. And they settled into life as a family of six. It wasnt until he was six months old that i was concerned because it looked like the bump on his fore head was growing. And his head secure france was jumping. I think he was 25 percentile in his head succumb france. And at suck month aft 80 percent sen tile. Reporter doctors said not to worry. But she persisted. And landon was diagnosed with a condition that causes the bones in the babys skull to join together too early. According to the cdc, one in every 2500 babies are born with it every year. Left untreated, the may you clinic says children can suffer there problems that range fromdeformity, developmental delays, seizures, and eye disorders. He was crying all the time. He was losing weight. He was getting further behind in his milestones. He was at almost nine months he was no longer rolling. They were threatening a feeding tube if i couldnt somehow get calories in him. Reporter for most, the treatment is surgery. To see your son go into a room that you cant be in and go through that surgery, not knowing exactly the outcome is very challenge. I didnt recognize him. His eyelids were all bruised. They were swollen shut for two days. Reporter but after surgery, the difference was remarkable. It was like a night and day difference with regard to his interaction, his eating. His interaction with people wasnt the blank stares anymore. He really came to life. Reporter the months past and although the shape of his head wasnt getting better, his doctors werent worried. He had what we refer to as a ski jump. And then he would say that those kind of things would modify and correct themselves over time. Reporter but they got a second opinion. From a surgeon who focuses only on crane yeah. And his diagnosis was different. It was confirmed that now he had another super that was back here that closed. Reporter so now landon faces another surgery and this time they say insurance wont cover the out of network surgeon they want. Their 15 page appeal was denied. I was heartbroken. I was really devastated. Reporter but landons parents are determined to do this their way. Raising money for the surgery through a go fund me. The response was very humbling. And to see family and friends to be able to donate money like they were was just overwhelming. It was just really a blessing. Reporter and they are sharing their story. They say hearing from other families gave them strength in their journey. You have to fight for your kids. Reporter and as they face this uncertain future, they say one thing gets them through it. Where as before he wasnt interactive and not laughing at all, and now he laughs all the time. He is always laughing.
