Caught on camera, an attack on a Shopping Center involving an offduty chp officer and a group of teenagers. That officer said it all started when a woman accused a group of teens of stealing her cell phone. Henry lee spoke exclusively with the officer who explains why he stepped in. Reporter the officer tells me he couldnt stand by and do nothing when this woman was being attacked. He stepped in and ended up getting attacked himself. Surveillance video shows an off duty chp officer be at the a group of teenagers at the mall in emeryville. The officer was trying to help a woman whose phone had been stolen. It was chaotic. It was really a scary situation. Reporter the officer who wanted to be a than if id only is greg try to run away from the attackers but they surrounded him, he then choked him almost to the point of unconsciousness. And you that if i let them go, they would swing at me. Sure enough, thats when their friends came behind me and struck me in the had. Reporter started when a woman accused one of them of taking her cell phone minutes earlier. She confronted them asking for his phone back. They got aggressive with the victim and started to assault the victim. Reporter you see him coming to help her. The officer said he tried to secretly take these pictures of the group but a teenage girl with the group noticed what he was doing. The group turned to him and became violent with him. Reporter another boy punches him. The officer runs off but he is surrounded and was attacked again. This is another video showing the fight when security tried to move in. I was mentally exhausted. Reporter a former correctional officer said he never took his gun. It was his girlfriend who told the mall security that he was an offduty officer. I had to do my best to stay in the moment. Reporter the officer suffered a concussion, a broken finger and bridges. He said this is the third time he tried to step in to help someone. I think it came down to me not being able to look away with what happened. Like she was going to be maybe in a bad situation. Reporter the woman whose phone was stolen was also punched by a teenage girl but she will be okay. Two boys ages 14 and 15 were arrested with battery. Police are looking for the eight other teams involved in the attack. With the presence of mind and composure even as trying to run away, how did he maintain that composure with that situation going on . He told me that he trained in jujitsu, he had presence of mind to keep calm, he didnt draw his gun which could have led to some other issues. He handed the situation there. Taxis, we have public transportation, a designated driver that you can have as well. So many options out there. I was reading statewide, the number of People Killed in crashes, a huge chunk of those who died in crashes over Holiday Weekends, for some reason, were not wearing seatbelts and i still cant understand that. Reporter in the bay area, and given maximum enforcement period that we can do, we see about 40 of the fatal injuries caused as a direct result of the person not wearing a seat. We have seen that consistently from in the last four years that i have been doing this. Who is not, i feel weird when i am in my car if i havent put on my seatbelt yet or if i backed up and i notice. Our people are they forgetting are they just saying, i dont care whether i am a little impaired or a lot impaired or im not putting on my seatbelt or is it younger people, older people . All the bill and missiles are going off in your car when youre not wearing your seat so people dont have to actively choose not to wear their seatbelt. As far as drinking and driving, we live in a day and age where the message has been sent out in so many different mediums that it just doesnt seem that that is the issue. Everybody knows that they are not supposed to drink and drive but people are making the decision to well, maybe im okay. Have frustrated are the officers on the road . We are frustrated. It is scary because we are working on the freeway at 3 00 in the morning. Working on a busy freeway on average speed is well over 70 miles an hour and the average person intoxicated in one form or another is as high as 60 , we are out there trying to do our jobs. At the end of the day, if someone makes that decision to get behind the wheel when they are under the influence, when they shouldnt. At the same time, how much of this could fall on the rest of us, friends, family, when we see someone around this time of year, especially who we can tell that had too much to drink . How much of that is on us to step in and say, look, you need to find another way. I think you are onto something. I think the reality is that this is a community issue, a family issue, friend issue.
