So tell us about the while idea that you grew up in the bay area, the general area. Mmhmm. You always knew what you wanted to do tell me about that. For as long as i can remember, i loved storytelling, reading, writing, talking, and i grew up with immigrant parents who were like doctor, lawyer, engineer. I would love to talk. I would be in the shampoo reading and i would read my books to imaginary audience. Fast forward here many years, i started interning here, other stations, went to wisconsin, became a studio reporter and ended up back here reporting the news. And i got an opportunity to host a show on p. B. S. And after that i wanted to tell stories that inspired people to be better and be better for other people, so it is called go, inspire, go. And oprah also says listen to the whispers and people were like youre so good at looking people in the eye and opening them up and making them feel comfortable. You should have a show. You should have a show. So as i guess as the whispers may have it, they became shouts and here i am dog my own show tell me what kind of a focus it will be . Will it be entertaining . You can dance do you sing . No. What will be the focus of your talk show . The focus of my talk show will be about you do you, window. Like you finding your true self. It is hard to find your true self and knowing what whoever challenges you go through life, you will be all right. You will be okay. There is hope and youre not alone in whatever it is youre going through. The people i interview, when you google them, they look all famous and all successful to society, but they have been through some stuff. The zigs, the zags, the ups and the downs and tall arounds. They got knocked down but they got back up. And we talk about the importance of being the first asianamerican male as a talk show host. Yes. Why is that important to you. Growing up, there were two people i looked up, oprah, and lavar burton. Do you remember him reading . Yes. And that just that taught me english and it tight me to be okay with imagining. And that for me was a passport to get out of i wouldnt want to say geto, but the bad parts of south sac because when we immigrated to america, we had 4 and 10 crammed in a trailer in a trailer park. This is the biggest dream i can dream and i want you at home to dream your biggest dream and take those baby steps. So nowadays with crazy rich asians i was just like, you know what you should do your own show. There is no one that looks like me and i think it surpasses race and ethnicity, but it is really important to with represented and to stand up and be shown. As you are, mr. 45 years in the by. The country gets its first look at the proceedings into what has dominated the headlines for months. If youre living with a condition, Kaiser Permanentes integrated care team will help you get through life without missing a beat. Kaiser permanente. Thrive. Welcome back. We have been bringing you coverage this morning of the first public hearing in the impeachment inquiry of President Trump. So far the democrats and the republicans at the hearing are really characterizing this investigation in different terms. Is this what americans should now expect from their president . If this is not impeachment conduct, what is . Anyone familiar with the democrats scorched earth war against President Trump would not be surprised to see all of the typical signs that this is a carefully orchestrated media smear campaign. The state Department Officials are testifying today another on friday and eight more witnesses next week. Well talk more about this with the constitutional law professor at u. S. C. Hastings. Thank you for joining us. Of course. No bombshell, but we are getting new information. Right. New information, for example, ambassador taylor added apparently since his earlier deposition, that one of his Staff Members heard ambassador sondland, who you will remember is the e. U. Ambassador, but he was a big contributor to mr. Trump, and he has been the go between on the ukraine investigation, that so this aide heard sondland and President Trump having a phone call the day after the important phone call between President Trump and mr. Zelenskyy where President Trump is pushing, what about this investigation, what about that . So further confirmation that all of this came from the top and President Trump was inorder innocently interested in getting the u crabbians to say they were going to investigate the bidens. When it comes to this hearing, how important is the actual questioning, david, when it comes to both sides now and what they are asking specifically trying to get a short answer, maybe a good response that maybe would play later in the later news across the country as people are working today and theyre not going to watch this, but they will catch it later today. That is right. It is all about getting clean sound bites so then when people tell the story, whether it is reporters, print, on tv, talk about this, you have clean statements about what was going on because what the democrats are trying to do is to show a clear flow through and to say, look, the president was very interested in doing something very wrong meaning using the levers of power to pressure this new president in ukraine who you remember has the russians on his land today with 10 of the ukrainian my tear budget and an all important meeting in the white house and for what . Political dirt on the person who the president thinks perhaps the most dangerous candidate to hip. That is the problem. How similar is this to a criminal trial when you are, you know, questioning witnesses and what they say becomes part of the record and you have your a ha moment or is this just more politics and grand standing in your opinion . Well, i think certainly what mr. Schiff is trying to do and what mr. Goldman who is the lawyer, a very fine lawyer who is trying to establish is he is trying both of then are trying to do this in as lawyerly way as possible, which is lets get the facts out because you have these two long Public Employees who have been Public Servants for all of us, one of them 50 years, a decorated military officer. He served in vietnam, and you want that story. It is just the facts. That is all were getting from these fee, nice and clean. Now, weve only had a hipt of what the republicans want to do because all we have heard is the Ranking Member nunes statement which is it is all a hoax, it is all the democrats. They hate the president. There is nothing here. These people have passed an audition. That is why theyre here. So it is night and day. Thee are just two totally different worlds that were dealing with now. When are we going to get sort of a parsing of the phrase we have heard a hundred types, quid pro quo. How important is this, if you do this for me, i will do that for you. The core of it is important, whether you use the latin or you Say Something else is what is important. The whole point is did the president commit in the words of the constitution, quote, treason, bribery or other high cripes and misdemeanors . And what were circling around is core from what we know the founders wanted impeachment to be for, which is they were worried about foreign entanglement. They were worried about misuse of power. They were worried about using the levers of power for your own gains and thats what were seeing here. If chairman schiff said if this is not impeachable, what in the word is . To go back to the oimpeachment hearings, specifically nixon, there was abc, nbc and cbs. And this kind of goes back to my first question i asked you about the sound bite and so forth. How much of an impact, no mat what happens is going to have on the American People . Do you think the des want President Trump up peached or the morale victory come next november peep go to the polls with what is on mind how they vote . I think largely that is what were dogging here. I think youre quite right. It is a difference situation. Certainly i remember being glued to the set as a kid watching those hearings and it is, of course, more flag president ed now. So that is part of it. I dont know how many minds are going to be changed by this because peep have such strong views about this president. So is there are there a grow of peep where they are going to say, oh, i didnt really that he was misusing power and, therefore, i am going to make a choice . What i think the democrats where they think they will end up is there will be impeach inspect theceps that the house of representatives will vote to ill peach and if were going to alal guise do a criminal trial, there the indictment. Then when we get to the senate where the actual trial takes place, i think still think the expectation is youre not going to get 2 3 of the senators. Youre not going to get all of those republican senators to say yes, this is impavement, but the democrat also put them object record saying this kid of conduct i guess is okay as far as the republicans are concerned, and then the American People can decide election by election, do they agree . Do they agree that doing this for personal gain is or is not okay . That is what we will find out in november. And ails a pleasure. Thank you very much. We appreciate it. Thank you so much for having me. Of course. People on the east coast and in the midwest are deaing with friday temperatures, to change the subject. The artic blast is happening around for another day and as the reporter explains, millions of people are doing everything they can to stay warm. Reporter heavy snow covers much of the midwest and the northeast. Even snow prone regions like upstate new york are seeing unusually high accumulations. I am hoping we dont get this much snow the rest of the season. You know, this is a little early. Reporter buffalos arrieta received three and a half inches more than the previous time for early november set back in the 1940s. After the snow comes the deep freeze. A onetwo punch of misery for people still trying to dig out. I hate the snow. I hate being cold. Reporter new records were set in many cities and towns on tuesday st some by nearly 10 degrees. Even folks in states like louisiana and texas are bundling up for the rare southern cold snap prompting the churches to become warming shelters for the homeless. People that are up and out will really i am not that tough and i cant handle this and will come in. Reporter and indianapolis dropped down to Single Digits wednesday morning. My legs are pretty cold. Because you bundle up waist up, the legs. Roar and icy roads are blamed for multicar wrecks in michigan and kansas. Several deaths are attributed to accidents caused by slippery driving conditions. The dead of winter temperatures come with roughly five weeks of fall remaining on the calendar. I was not prepared. It turns out i was not prepared. It is november. It is not supposed to happen yet. Reporter there is some relief coming. The temperatures are expected to warm up beginning on thursday. In chicago, ktvu fox 2 news. American shoppers are expected to spend on average 942 each on Holiday Gifts this year. That is well over 100 more than last year. With all of the pressure to give the perfect present, this is not the time to go overboard. So we welcome back to the nine consumer psychologist. Thank you for joining us, kit. My pleasure. So much of our buying, especially around the holidays is emotional. I want to give my two little boying everything, but i need to remember that is not the responsible way to do it. Oh, my gosh. 65 of credit card holders of Young Children say theyre willing to go into debt to buy gifts for their kids. This is horrible. There is nothing that your kids would like more than for you to be happy, relaxed, not anxious, and when you have Credit Card Debt, you are not that way. And people live Credit Card Debt already are actually twice as likely as those without debt to endorse this philosophy of going into debt to buy gifts. I just cant emphasize enough as a psychologist how bad this is for your family. We talk a lot about wants versus needs. And is this something that you recommend adults have that conversation with your little ones as to why maybe santa cant bring every single thing on the list . Yeah. It depends on how old the kids are, but, you know, you can have your own family traditions, and i think that is the message you need to communicate is this is how our family does it because the kids really arent as social as we think they are. What the family says the way the world should be is really primary to them especially when theyre really young, and you can set a standard that will last the rest of their life of not going into debt, of not overspending, of appreciating what you have, of having gratitude for what you do get above all else, and that will serve them much better than any toys they can get. My email inbox, kit soverflowing with 10 off a 50 purchase, 20 off if you buy before friday. I imagine retailers are doubling down on trying to get us into their stores or on to their sites. Exactly. So about three quarters of shoppers plan to buy online, but 60 to 8 5 of gift also actually be purchased in stores. And so retailers are duking it out with each other now to get us into their stores. They also know when were in stores we tend to purchase impulsively and we tend to buy more stuff for ourselves so some of the things the retailers are doing this year, theyre going to have a lot more displays because people like to take the selfies when they get into interesting displays. Well have instagramworthy backgrounds all over the place. Well have more popup shops with interesting merchandise. Store also be offering more freebies like gift wrap and shipping and snacks. I think consumers have to really be aware, though, when they get something free from a store it is not really free. As human beings we have this kind of mechanism where we feel like we need to reciprocate. When we get something, you know, we very kindly want to give something. So were more likely to purchase when we get that free bottle l of water or an offer of Free Shipping than we are if were just evaluating a gift. Were showing video here of people shopping in what i would consider a traditional shopping mall. What is the state of the american mall Shopping Experience right now . It is not great. It is really not great. There are a few malls that are doing really well. Those are the malls that are really embracing this new cob september of being more like a lifestyle center. They have more food options. They have more things like dentist offices and other sorts offer rapids that people will run. The malls that are not doing well have these cavernous stores that people dont like to wander through. So well be seeing more things like click and collect and buy and then drive through and pick it up. These malls are really trying hard to adapt to the new consumer reality. It can be an overwhelming experience. Thank you so much. It is always a joy to have you on. Thank you. I dont know. I am pretty tight with my pennies as you know, but i do not spend 942. I will tell you that. On the flip side, you know what . To me it is worth going in debt a little bit in order to see the smiles and happiness. The key point is a little bit. I completely disagree. I feel like that moment in time is picture that i am going to have for the rest of my life and if i have to suffer in the months ahead, ill pay it off eventually. I wont spend elsewhere, but that moment in time to me is a precious moment. So i dont mind going a few hundred bucks in debt. If youre responsible enough to take care of it. That is it. You have to be responsible. If youre digging out of a hole your entire life. That is you me. I feel like im breaking up a marriage problem here. Oh. I learned something new today.
