How does it feel to be home . It feels really good. We were gone for nights, had to evacuate twice. We initially started out and lost power and got the evacuation notice there, so we went to walnut creek for the last four days. On saturday at first he thought are you kidding me . The kincade fire burning in Sonoma County and Power Outages has impacted blood donations. The donations at a warehouse where the not profit Blood Service provider were in the evacuation zone. You hear about the strain it has put on the blood supply. We are going live in studio, with the regional director for blood challenge. This fire started last wednesday night and i went was they starting to be impacted by the flames, by the Power Outages . We have some mobile blood drives and packed it and he does come off the calendar wednesday of last week. Our center in santa rosa and the warehouse you mentioned, they were closed on sunday, and both are closed through today, as we get things cleaned up and ready to welcome donors that tomorrow. There were closed due to the flames being so close up because of the Power Outages, or both . Power outage, and we were in the evacuation area. What happened to the blood supply in your warehouse when the power goes out . Were you able to salvage blood already donated . Good question. Yes we were. We moved the blood that was in santa rosa to our San Francisco facility, so we could continue to distribute to hospitals throughout the bay area, including the santa rosa region from there. Vicki talk about how important vitalant is to the region right now. You go beyond the area . We do, so vitalant is throughout the country. We serve roughly 45 hospitals from the north in fort bragg, south to santa cruz, and we are the primary blood supplier for those hospitals. The beauty about being part of the larger vitalant family is that in moments like this one we need to have blood come in from other parts of the country to assist us, in meeting hospital needs, we can do that. When you talk about the blood drive, cancellations of blood drives, im curious about how much blood, when it comes to pints, is actually lost when you dont have the donation drives. In the last five days, we had to take off nearly 300 blood products we expected to collect during our mobile drive in santa rosa center, so that has an Immediate Impact in patient care, so we are asking folks who can donate blood to go and donate blood at our centers that are open. So often we go through life every day not thinking about blood donations. Unfortunately, ive been in the hospital because of up in a member over the past week, and when you live to this day after day, you start to realize how much blood is actually used in hospitals. I was guilty of it, and now i understand it, so it people are sitting at home and they do want to donate, what is the best enders are you going to drives again, i should say, once you get your facility back up and running . Certainly, weve got things happening now, so we recommend people go to vitalant. Over, put in the code, and fight is Donation Center happening in their region, and give the gift of life if you can. Fred, this is the second big fight in Sonoma County over the past two years. What is your reaction as someone who was there in the county . It is devastating for the community, but weve seen the community of santa rosa, mendocino, and lake counties bounce back from this previously. Resilient, incredible people. They will do the same again, and we will be there to support them as an organization. I know what happened to strong communities. People come together and do what they have to do, and that is including donating blood. You brought this end, a great shirt especially the following. Is as i donated blood. Boo yeah. Great deal. Donate today. Get your tshirt. Donate today, get your t shirt. You can find out how you can donate by the way to vitalant also by going to our website, ktvu. Com you click on web links. Fire evacuees at a red cross shelter in santa rosa say these kind of criminals make them feel even more vulnerable. For 10 footage and interviews with survivors, the Netflix Documentary fire in paradise retell the survival stories. We are joined by one of the filmmakers. Thank you for joining us. The film made me feel a certain way. And made me feel like there is something we have to do. Was that your intent . 100 , yeah. I mean, the film should make you uncomfortable, and it should make you angry. You know, i think were living in unprecedented times, as weve seen over the last order four to five weeks, whats happening right now. And you know, i think the idea is that these stories are not isolated anymore. And i think it is time that we recognize that, so hopefully this film puts the viewer right sort of in the seat, if you will, but a lot of these people wonder. Thats what i liked, drea. First of all, theres no narrator in this film. Its all told by the people who lived it, so its basically people talking to you, but there is not a traditional narrator. I like that because you hear that and the voices of the people affected. Its about 40 minutes or so. What did you decide to what put in and want to leave out . That is the hardest part, right . You know, we arrived to the couple weeks after the fire on thanksgiving day, and just started hitting the ground running, meeting people, and over the course of about, you know, five to six weeks, we interviewed over 20 people, you know, countless hours of material, and i think what you see in the film is essentially a distillation. We distilled down about six different voices and stories who all come in some way, shape, and form sort of overlapped. These people do not know their stories overlapped. They did not even know about each other sort of after the fires, but in talking to them, we put pieces together to solve this puzzle, if you will, of First Responders who were helping certain residents, so we kind of put that together, so that is what the core story of this is. What i like about or what is well done because theres nothing really to like about, you know, disaster. What is well done about this film is that it has a perspective from almost everyone. It has First Responders, it has young people, old people, kids, and it also has a little bit of an aftermath. So at the end of the movie, there are some things that you come up with that you kind of, you dont say it, but we should be doing something. What do you think that is, in your opinion . I think first and foremost, each family need to prepare themselves. Each person, each resident. In talking to the cal fire captain, his big message is that we can do this alone. I think we have this unrealistic expectation of firefighters that, you know, fire raises, you call them, and they descend like heroes and put it out. Thats just not the case. They do a lot, and they risk their lives, but the only way were going to get through this and survive and is Everybody Needs to play their part, and so, you know . Every resident is a clear calamitous, you got to clear back the brush, but theres bigger things we need to do, you know . At the governmental level. There are things we need to do in terms of applying pressure to pg e , for example. Everybody has got to play their part. Did you learn anything when you made this film . Well, i mean i learned that trauma is real, and the traumatic effects and longterm effects of what people are going through in california and around the world when it comes to the sort of, you know, big, sort of climate disasters, it is starting to take its toll. Drea cooper, oaklandbased filmmaker. I think you did a nice job telling the story. Wait for joining us. A followup now on a report we brought you here yesterday. A building lost electricity and was without power until recently. After five days without power and living in potentially dangerous conditions, ktvus amber lee tells us how changes are being made to avoid similar issues in the future.
