Good morning and thank you for joining us on mornings on 2. Thursday, october 24. Im pam cook. Im dave clark. We are starting with breaking news. A fastmoving wildfire pushed by powerful wind fcing mandatory evacuations east of geyserville in northeast in Sonoma County. Crews say the fire is burning at a dangerous rate. We will check in in just a moment. Cristina rendon is in that area. We will check on the weather. And it could actually get windier when the sun comes up. Is going to start decreasing. We talked to a sergeant up there. He said he saw 60 and ive seen that. It will be 3040 around 1500 feet up to 3000 feet or 4000 feet. Alms all observations are showing low humidity. The temperatures are warm. Read ranch, 1300 feet. Not selena west has gusted 58. The last i saw was 45. Some may be coming down a bit but still Strong Enough and you are getting a northerly direction or northeast. Windsor has a north east at 12. There is a north, northwest throughout much of napa county. North east in Sonoma CountyHigh Pressure to the north and High Pressure in nevada and low pressure here. High pressure doesnt like low pressure so what does it with wind. That will start to relax later on but humidity is dry. In the teens for some. It may get a little lower. And temperatures a very warm. 77 in windsor. 78 in penngrove. These are all wind drift. Tiburon, 71. It looks like another wind event is on tap for sunday and that one could be even stronger. Today we see decreasing wind throughout the day. Highs in the 80s and 90s. We get a break and then we need to focus on sunday. Sal is here. Back to the desk. We will check in with sal in just a moment. Cruise right now saying that fire in Sonoma County is burning at a dangerous rate. It doubled in size overnight and will continue to burn out of control with 0 containment. Cristina rendon is in the area this morning and joins us by phone. What can you tell us about the wind . Steve said they may die down but it hasnt been good. Reporter it hasnt been good and just driving up here as we were leaving the oakland area, coming up to this area, we could feel the wind on the car. This is a very big fire and we got our first look as we were driving north coming through rohnert park. We could see the flames in the distance as we were looking to the horizon line. We were heading north near the community of healdsburg and geyserville. Right now we are in healdsburg trying to make her ways to the media area and we can see an orange glow in the sky east of us. And you really can tell its big from where you are seeking imagine what its like for firefighters in the thick of this fight. Lets get to some numbers to give people an idea of whats going on. The fire was first transported around 9 30 pm. The wind really push those flames. Around midnight it was 400 acres and th it just exploded in the last few hours to 10,000 acres. Right now there is 0 containment. Its burning out of control. Cal fire is trying to get a handle on it but they have not been able to get any helicopters into the air. They said the wind was too strong. Theyre hoping to get those choppers up at sunrise. This is being called the kincade fire. It started, we understand, along kincade road near the geysers geothermal field. Cal fire saying they cannot get up with their choppers in the air so they are working on the ground right now. Thankfully right now there are no reports of injuries or any homes or structures that have been burned. But there are mandatory evacuations in place for people because this thing is moving fast. At this point these are mandatory evacuations that went in just after midnight. These are areas along red winery road, Alexander Mountain road, state highway 128 from geysers road to river road including the red rock casino area. All of that area has been told they need to leave and get to a safe place. They have evacuation site set up. One at Windsor High School and the other at Healdsburg Community center. Those are two places people can go to get to safety. At this point the cause of the fire is unknown. We just know its moving fast. We know this started in an area where pg e had implemented their Public Safety power shut off and we did get a statement from pg e. They said they are aware of the fire and it was near the Public Safety power shut off footprint and they are working to gather additional information. That was a quote from them. We are trying to understand what exactly that means but we know that at least power in the area was shut off when this power started. This will be a long investigation but at this point the concern is for the Public Safety. They need to get to safe ground if theyre in the area, of eastern areas in the hills. Its burning near wine country land so that will be a concern, im sure come up for some wineries. At this point no one has been hurt and this fire is moving dangerously fast because the wind is so strong. I know you said you are in the healdsburg area trying to make your way closer to the Evacuation Center and to get more information but what can you tell us. Under the big concern with wind, embers blowing, they could travel miles and also the air quality in the area. Reporter we can physically smell the smoke in our car. Its coming through the air vents and we are quite a distance away. In terms of the air quality, i would say its not too good right now where we are in healdsburg as we make our way north and we can see into the distance, we are too far to see how those embers are flying or spreading but we can see a big low and a big cloud above that glow. There is going to be some activity in terms of the fire spreading quickly and in terms of the fact that it started so small with 300 400 acres and just exploded to 10,000. Im sure the next update will show that its grown larger. We just havent heard from them yet. Cristina rendon. Keep us posted as far as traffic goes as you get closer to that area a lot of people will be evacuating and eating that information. Thank you for joining us with epic we will let her go so she can get closer to the Evacuation Centers. Sal, you are watching that area i would imagine it will increase the traffic. There are so people under an Evacuation Order to be prepared and some people, honestly, if they are still suffering from the stress of two years ago and they may try to get out of there sooner because its just too worrisome. There will be closures and a lot of Police Presence in the area. So far 101 through the area has not been significantly affected but that may change. Lets go to the area we can see traffic is moving along okay if youre coming in from tracy. There is some slowing on 205 and 580 as is normally the case. As you drive over to Castro Valley in hayward, its a nice drive and interstate 880 in oakland looks okay. Clear weather here. Visibility is good at the bay bridge. Also the traffic is beginning to get a little more crowded getting across the bridge. 5 09 am. Lets go back to the desk. As expected early this morning pg e kara duffy Public Safety power shut off in San Mateo County. So far 195 customers have lost their power but ifthe high wind continues that number could go higher later this morning. And napa county more than 6000 homes and businesses have no power and in Sonoma County, they have the most without power. More than 27,000 customers have lost power. People we talked to in santa rosa say Power Outages seem to be the new reality. In santa rosa, officials said they are working with pg e to help keep people safe including using generators out there to keep Traffic Signals at the busiest intersections working. The Sonoma CountyEmergency Operations center has been open since tuesday. Worker said they are coordinating the countywide response. The county is also opening three Community Resource centers at 8 am. They will provide water coming airconditioning and a place to charge cell phone batteries. These centers are located at the santa rosa Memorial Veterans building on maple avenue. The cloverdale citrus fair and the Hanna Boys Center on arnold drive in sonoma. The power shut off has led to several School Closures in Sonoma County. All the schools in the Alexander ValleySchool District and at the geyserville unified School District are closed today. That is in the area of the fire. The Santa Rosa CitySchool District has canceled classes at Hidden Valley elementary, Rincon Valley middle school, Maria Carrillo high school and the santa rosa accelerated charter school. The Rincon Valley union School District is shutting down five elementary schools. They are austin creek, sequoia, binkley, madrone and the sequoia campus of Rincon Valley charter schools. Pg e officials will closely watch the weather today as they decide if they can start restoring power. But now there are new concerns about another and possibly even bigger round of Power Outages as soon as this weekend. Pg e is forecast shows more fire danger with high wind sunday and monday. Steve paulson is talking about that too. The forecast shows the higher risk for power shutoffs in almost all service areas. Some of the models we look at such as the european model suggests that this could be the strongest wind event of the season. Pg e says the strong wind is expected to dry out grass and brush even more. That would increase the already high fire danger. However, pg e says no decisions have been made yet about more power shutoffs for this weekend. You can go to our website, ktvu. Com. You can go at any time. We will continue to have the very latest information on the power shutoffs. We will continue to follow that fastmoving fire burning in Sonoma County near geyserville. People are being evacuated. The other freeways are okay. 152 and 156 has a little slow traffic which is not out of the ordinary. In gilroy to san jose it has been a decent drive with slowing in morgan hill and the rest of it looks good out to the west valley. We are following a fire near geyserville that doubled in size overnight, fueled by strong wind and dry brush. We have an update on the conditions, the evacuations and the fight to get it under control. Plus the reason republican lawmakers stormed the closed door hearing on capitol hill and what they claim is not there about those hearings. Oh, so much. I used to think that all kale was alike. Its not. Its not . Mmmm. They look alike. [chuckles] you used to think all eye doctors were alike too. Female narrator choose a vsp private practice doctor with the orange premier banner for advanced technology and personalized attention. Schedule your annual eye exam with a private practice doctor at vsp. Com premier. This is what more looks like. Thats some nice kale. Thats swiss chard. [laughs] good morning. Welcome back to mornings on 2. Thursday, october 24. Im dave clark. Im pam cook. We continue to follow todays breaking news. A wild fire is burning out of control in Sonoma County near geyserville. Moments ago received word the fire jumped across highway 128, closer to the River Rock Casino which has been evacuated. The fire exploded in size. It was 5000 acres overnight but overnight moved to 7000 and the latest count is 10,000 acres. 0 containment. That is 15. 5 square miles. Cristina rendon is out there this morning. And you were on the phone with us now. What do you see and what are you hearing . Reporter we can tell the wind is strong. As we can come we can see the embers being swirled by the wind as we drive. And the smell of smoke is very strong. We are coming up to the cal fire post in healdsburg. If you seconds ago we were passed by a cal fire truck with its lights glaring, likely heading to help with that fire. As you mentioned it jumped 128 east toward River Rock Casino. Thats one of the areas they will likely be focusing on now. We have not been able to pull over to give you a good shot of the fire just because the smoke is so thick. We were getting a good shot of it near some wineries just off the freeway. We pulled off on an exit and were looking at the flames and they were going very strong, burning out of control. And in a few minutes the wind changed, the smoke got very thick and we could no longer get that vantage point. And it shows how unpredictable this fire is and will be, continue to be throughout the Morning Hours as firefighters try to get a handle on it. This kincade fire, like you said, is burning out of control. 0 containment. It started around 9 30 pm last night. We understand in the area where the kaiser geothermal field is. At this point no one has been hurt and there are no reports of injuries that we know of at this point. We are getting some incredible images overnight of how intense this fire is that the wind is whipping these flames and really pushing them and growing at a fast rate going from 300 acres burned to 10,000 acres burned and growing. Cal fire has their work cut out for them. In the last i we will hear from the Sonoma CountySheriffs Office that they have been helping with evacuations and trying to help cal fire with the inquiries with what is going on. If youre just tuning in, youre listening to Cristina Rendon in Sonoma County moving through the fire zone. Tell us about getting around on the roads for you guys. What is it like trying to move around out there . Reporter its not too bad for us because theres not too much traffic on the freeway but in terms of visibility, it is slow and poor. I would say as you approach healdsburg , if you keep going north toward cloverdale, the smoke is very thick on 101 and we had to drive pretty slowly in the area because we could not really see where we were going and we had to turn around because it was getting too dangerous. And as you do turn around and make your way down south, you can see those embers in front of you and you can see how the wind is swirling them in the air and creating these low visibility issues. You can imagine how it is for firefighters in the thick of it. Are you going to try to make your way to one of the Evacuation Centers . I know you were talking about it earlier. A number of people have been evacuated and others are under warnings to get ready to evacuate if necessary. Reporter yes. Thats right. We will try to make her way to one of the Evacuation Centers. We came to a media command post first. The cal fire command post in healdsburg. We do not see anyone here. Thats likely because everyone is out and the resources are out fighting the fire. We thought maybe we would have a cal fire spokesperson had to give us more information but its completely empty and likely because all of the crews are out dedicating those resources to the fire. I believe Windsor High School is one of those Evacuation Centers so we are trying to get to that location. And a lot of the areas along 128, many of those communities and homes have been told they need to get out because its not safe. You can see that glow in the distance and it is very big. Yes, we will try to make her way to and Evacuation Center but we have not been able to talk to anyone yet. Please be safe out there. You guys be safe. We just heard again that the fire jumped highway 128. Certainly a big concern. Cristina rendon up in that area and will check in with her throughout the morning. Right now we want to go over to steve because of the wind really was the story overnight and that fire doubled in size. 60 . Buyer creates its own wind and its own weather too. And you know that area pretty well. And with somewhat. Not as much as i used to. Topping 128, is that moving closer to holmes . I would have to look. We will check on that. We do have extreme conditions and they will be wi us most of the day. The wind throughout the day will decrease. Ryan said 71 in tiburon. The wind feels warmer than the ambient air. That is true. There are some very warm temperatures around the bay and on the coast. Tiburon at 70 now but kensington, 73. Berkeley lab, 73. Alameda at 76. And look at bodega bay in healdsburg, windsor and dillon beach, all in the 70s. Even penngrove at 76 and thats the reason why coming off of Copper Mountain and mount st. Helena, 53 Miles Per Hour. That is a 4300 feet. I think the geyserville ranch should read northeast and not west because the humidity is 10 . Also ridge ranch at 1300 feet, is probably the closest to the fire. That is a little northeast of geyserville. Thats almost 30 Miles Per Hour with 75 degrees and 10 humidity. There is the mount st. Helena, west. Some locations are not reporting. You could be a number of reasons why. Even a napa county you see 2025 Miles Per Hour. Its all of the north, northeast. The humidity continues to be very low. Teens for some. Maybe even Single Digits with relative humidity. The red flag is in full force. High wind, drive fuel and low committed to. Thank you. Here i am and we are looking at some of the commutes. So far on 80, we start with 80 to vallejo in fairfield and it looks all right. There have been no major slowdowns. Theres a little bit of slowing approaching interstate 780 and highway 37 west out of vallejo is very crowded. We have a pocket of stop and go traffic near the bridge. And there are no problems on interstate 80 from hercules to richmond or on 680. A little slowing on 242 and slowing on highway 4 and contra costa county. 18 minutes to drive from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze and another 10 15 minutes waiting at the bay bridge toll plaza. At 5 37 am. Lets go back to the desk. 33,000 pg e customers have no power right now after pg e shut off power and San Mateo County early this morning. Right now, 195 customers near woodside and la junta have lost their power but its the strong , if that win continues, that number could go higher. A napa county more than 6000 homes and businesses have no power. In Sonoma County has the most without power. The power has been cut to more than 27,000 customers. Pg e says its been taking action to limit the amount of customers affected by the power shutoffs and one way they are doing that is called segmenting parts of the service system. They are also using generators to keep other customers online. We were also able to secure backup generation for a few communities, specifically anglin , plasserville, calistoga and grass valley. Altogether slightly above 5000 customers are able to be restored via backup generation. Pg e says as soon as its meteorologist say it safe, ground crews will go back out and check power lines for any damage. Pg es ceo was also asked if the threat of wildfires can be blamed on the failure of pg e to maintain and upgrade its equipment. The fire risk has grown exponentially, particularly in this region in the last couple years. 2012, 15 of our service area was designated high fire threat. This year, 52 , more than a threefold increase in the geography of risk in that period of time. Pg e expects to get the all clear for the Current Power shutoffs by noontime today. After they have inspected each powerline segment, that part of the system can be reenergized. Pg e says it could take up to 48 hours to get everybody back online. The city of san jose is moving forward with possibly cutting ties with pg e. Mayor sam liccardo is considering the proposal to create the citys own power grid bybuying assets from the utility. San joses rules committee discussed a plan to create a local customer owned utility that would ultimately go to the full city council. The city would start by building microgrids throughout san jose and eventually take control of pg e transmission lines. But its a plan to utility already rejected in san francisco. Although pg e has stated that the Company Assets are not for sale, in fact, they are in bankruptcy court. They are for sale. And whether they like it or not, they are at the mercy of a bankruptcy judge and ultimately the cpuc. This is the time to talk about how pg e gets reorganized in a way that will fulfill the Public Interest and hopefully do a better job in providing reliable power. The full council will discuss the pros and cons of the proposal next month. The city also plans to get feedback from customers to see where they stand on the matter. The California PublicUtilities Commission is set to vote on the bailout for pg e. The proposal approved by the state legislature creates a 21 billion Wildfire Insurance Fund which will be accessible to utilities who pay out damages to victims of utility caused wildfires. The vote will take place at a cpuc meeting in redding neck. Acted as plan to hold demonstration outside the meeting. They say the bailout bailout were getting updates from Sonoma County on the fast moving wildfire burning thousands of acres near geyserville right now. After the break, firefighters talk about their plan to get the fire under control while evacuating homes and businesses. What do they need to know right now . If youre in the area or in one of the mandatory evacuation zones and you have not left yet, we urge you to get out. Reporter what areas . That is 128 corridor, pine flat, red winery road, those areas right now. Reporter in terms of how this is spreading and moving, do you anticipate it will grow even larger in the next few hours . You cant predict that but like you said we have people on the ground. We have a dozier line in engines on the ground and when the sun comes up we will have aircraft we can put on the fire. Reporter is there reason why the had to Stay Grounded . The aircraft fly during the day. And this started in the evening so there was some difficulty there. Reporter tell us about the origin of the fire. What area did it started and why is it called the kincade fire . The kincade fire started in that area. Usually its after a road or an area of origin. That is is the area where it started. Reporter were getting reports the fire had jumped the 128 corridor going toward River Rock Casino. Are you aware of that . What can you tell us . Have not had any of that information come to me on it jumping the corridor but i know it spreading actively up there in those areas. Reporter p are under a mandatory evacuation, what are you doing or is it Sonoma County going doortodoor . Making calls . Of course you have engines and fire personnel out there but the local Sheriffs Office was going doortodoor making those evacuations door to door. Reporter do we know how understands about 300 ed . Residents and the mentor evacuation zone at this time in over 1000 in an advisory. Reporter i think one of our crew has a question back there. Do you have a question we can relay that information . I wanted to come under trying to pinpoint exactly to give people an idea of where it is. We are looking at maps trying to figure out exactly as well. I know he does not know if it jumped 128 but does he know, is it burning its burning toward the River Rock Casino. It looks like that would be between the Russian River and 101. Is 101 in any danger or is a burning toward the Russian River or away from it . Reporter the question is whether or not the fire is burning toward the Russian River or away from the Russian River . We know the fire may have jumped 128 so were trying to figure out which way its going. Is 101 in danger . As of right now and not heard anything about the 10 one quarter in danger or threatened at this time. The fire is burning south, southwesterly direction which is the northeasterly wind that was predicted. Reporter in terms of structure damage, any reports of any structure damage x we are hearing there may be some homes on red winery road that may be affected. To our residents in those areas but no reports of damage or destroyed structures at this time. Reporter anything else you can tell people who are watching this closely and the need to get out if they havent gotten out already . If you have not gotten out, you should go. If youre in one of those areas where you may be under a warning, be ready to go. Stay close to your phones and close to the next so and watch the news and social media. Reporter and give us those Evacuation Centers . One of the Healdsburg Community center and one of the Windsor High School. Reporter thank you so much for your time. We will let you get back to finding those resources for the fire and we will try to make her way north as we try to get closer to the flames to give you a better look. It is moving fast and it is unpredictable at this point so will we get a good location we will bring it to you. Cristina rendon, ktvu fox 2 news.
