I have details coming up. All this week ktvu is spending some time highlighting a very serious problem here in the bay area, homelessness. Yesterday we told you about that some of the city programs put in place to address the issue that we turn our attention to groups hoping to help. I visited one Nonprofit Organization in san jose getting people off the street and back on their feet. We think about the Environmental Impact he does reporter there is nothing posh about Eileen Richardson thomas former napster ceo left the tech world in 2005 after volunteering at a palo alto food pantry. That day changed her life, and in the process has changed thousands of lives and she decided it was time to give back and become a social entrepreneur. At some point when you are successful in business it seems like its more deals and dollars. And the thing is very life changing. So, this is, this being life changing every single day. Reporter like veteran anthony tiegs, homeless and forgotten. He joined richardsons downtown streets team eight years ago. It is a unique nonprofit that puts the homeless to work. Now in year 13, is grown to 15 bay area cities and over 2000 team members are now off the street and flourishing. This is the last thing that saved my life. I was out in the streets for about four years. And, when i found out about downtown street team, my last change for the better. Reporter richardsons approach is simple. Take pride in a days work and in return staff will provide a path to housing, jobs, and provide a Supportive Community environment that builds self esteem. Their success is the ceos approach, too many nonprofits are rigid and institutional. Richardson said by allowing for innovation, it can open up new doors. She saw firsthand during her days in the silicon valley. An entrepreneur comes in with an idea and their Management Team and they get money raised, all of it upfront, billions of dollars and then they get to breeze and focus on the innovation. Reporter funding nonprofits is a major hurdle but thanks to richardsons deep tech route and success shes been able to get Companies Like google and the fury foundation on board, she calls it venture through philanthropy because relying solely on government grants and subsidies can be very frustrating. They are looking at these nonprofits and saying you do it this way, ill give you x number of dollars, usually not enough to pay for the whole solution with whole program. Then, after they dont pay for the whole program, there is a game of got you. So two or three months later you put in your reimbursement to have your costs reimbursed they say oh im not going to pay for this and i will pay for that and how do i know you did Case Management and etc. , etc. Reporter it is a process because the product is people who all have different needs. But sure good things happen. Just a 64yearold mercy wand. Wonderful knowing it, really growing. And im a part of it. Im short but im tall now. I feel tall now. You should do. I feel great. Who are we . It is pretty remarkable. The program is not only working its growing. They now have two in the state of florida, and they helped all over the country in fact mayor london breed likes it so much she wants to trickle the program in the next year. One solution in this very big problem and we touch people involved it is amazing to see how much it just changes how they feel about themselves, how much it changes how the Community Reacts to them. That is the key allowed these people have nothing. By rebuilding their selfesteem you will get them on the right track. And the program is working. Our weeklong series on the bay area homeless crisis ends tomorrow night with a special roundtable discussion on homelessness with some of the leaders of the bay areas biggest cities.
