An explosion at Nustar Petroleum storage plants selby terminal in crockett sent flames shooting into the air. Thick black smoke cloud in nearby towns. Two tanks containing ethanol and jet fuel exploded. Those were part of the explosion that happened here last night. That sent the flames into the air. One tank had about 167,000 gallons of the chemical. To put that in perspective that amount of liquid would fill seven average sized swimming pools. Fire Officials Say two tanks are destroyed and two others were affected but still functional. Last night nustar set all operations and shipments of products in and out of the facility are stopped. The fire was so close to the interstate that the california Highway Patrol shut down i80 in both directions for hours. The situation obviously was dangerous at times the contra costa Fire District spokesperson said one contractor was caught inside when the fire broke out. Unable to evacuate on his own because of the fire. He sought shelter in a culvert and was eventually, once of the fire was on the scene, was evacuated out of the facility. Reporter we do have a statement from nustar we got last night. I will read it for you here. They said there were two impacted tanks which were holding very low volumes of ethanol, less than 1 of tank capacity. All personnel are safe and accounted for. Whats happening today, the investigation is ongoing. There is still no cause yet. Theyre trying to figure that out as we speak. Right now there are nearly 90 miles of express lanes across the bay area. Transportation leaders say they hope to add another 125 miles by 2035. Two months ago the facility was in danger of closing but a deal between the union, the department of health, the mayor and supervisors without keep the doors open. Supervisor Hillary Ronen has been pushing for an ambitious plan Mental Health sf which she says is fully formed with a source of funding already in the works. At this point she says the mayors plan is more a set of goals than concrete proposals. She had not identified a funding source.
