Blow a kiss, into the sun we need someone to lean on blow a kiss, into the sun all we need is somebody to lean on it came as a surprise to many people when caltrans announced last week it may have to calls the caldecott tunnel during pg es planned safety shut off. Thats done that thousands of drivers who use that commute touse that tunnel to commute each and every. Caltrans has a new plan in place to keep that tunnel open, regardless of a powder power outage. Reporter they will explain it completely. First of all, i want you to look over here at these generators. They are about to be disconnected because the caldecott tunnel gets power from two separate grids, one on the alameda side, the other on the color countryside here they are all working now. The odds of the grids on both sides yelling at once have always been near zero, nonetheless, the caldecott tunnel complex knows it was therefore a very specific reason. A backup to the double bridge system for emergency evacuation. The priority had to be on safety. So, we had redone the systems in place and an emergency system in place, and a third level system in place. Reporter the caldecott is one of the most important corridors in california. It is essential , earthquakes, tidal waves, or any other natural emergency that might require a huge migration either way. Then we had to get right to work with our electrical cruise and worked directly with our Utility Partners in order to get separate generators brought out on site as quickly as possible. Reporter how much power does the caldecott tunnel really need to operate all of its safe read Safety Systems and other operations . Beneath the approximate power used by about 6000 california homes. That will serve the entire population of orinda. Pg e arranged for a trailer size to generators that were hooked up to have enough power for an entire vast complex. Those generators will remain on site through the end of december, the end of the main fire sent season. Next spring, we are in the process of designing a generator that can be out there that can handle it should we have the emergency again. Reporter pg e also devised a way in order to get power to Caltrans Caldecott tunnel, which will remain in place. And pg e also provided to be generators to bart to keep that system fully operational. As i said, the generators here are going to be turned off very soon, which is good news for the neighbors who sayexcuse me, many of them saying they are awfully loud. Tom, i think a lot of people would be surprised, i know i was to find out that the caldecott tunnel did not have a backup generator. Well, they had a backup generator of sorts, but it was built at a much older time. The only thing they really wanted to do was to get people out of the tunnel. That would not suffice for that. All of the increase track it traffic, it was simply inadequate. And if you should get a fire in there while people are going through there without that ventilation, there could be a really horrific scene going on, and they just werent going to have it. I came up with a better solution. Because of that renovation, these tunnels remain open now and in the future. Tom baker outside of caldecott tunnel tonight, thanks.
