It was that phone call that prompted an impeachment inquiry. In washington, d. C. The president says the allegations that he acted illegally are nothing more than a witch hunt. Reporter that is. Today a select few lawmakers were given the chance to read the whistleblower complaint but behind closed doors. Now Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell says he is more concerned and the whistleblower complaint has din declassified but we have not been able to see the text of it just yet but it is more likely to be leaked to the public. All a hoax, folks. Reporter President Trump doubling down on his defense of the controversial whistleblower complaint at the center of the political firestorm focused on ukraine. Impeachment for that . When you have a wonderful meeting or you have a wonderful conversation. Reporter the remarks hours after the white house released this five page memorandum detailing the july conversation with ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky. Republicans say it vindicates the president. Democrats argue it is illegal strong arming. Todays release of the notes by the white house confirms this behavior that undermines the integrity of our election and our national security. From my point of view to impeach any president over a phone call like this is insane. It is likely the whistleblower complaint was declassified ahead of the hearing tonight so more can be discussed tomorrow. Reporter the word she said when we talked to her today was jaw dropping. She was able to look at the contents of the unreducted whistleblower complaint and Many Democrats including former housing and urban Development Secretary Julian Castro say they feel this is actually why there should be a thorough investigation and the results should be presented to the public. Reporter the whistleblower complaint was made available behind closed doors wednesday, among them Congress Woman Jackie Speier. The complaint in my estimation was explosive. It was jaw dropping. Reporter she says the whistleblower complaint suggest an abuse of power asked for ukr help investigate joe biden. To meet the standard of urgent it has to show that it has ramifications for national security. And there was no question that this was the case. Reporter one republican of nebraska said some of the contents were troubling but democrats should not rush to impeach. House minority leader Kevin Mccarthy introduced a resolution calling for disapproval of House Speaker Nancy Pelosis impeachment inquiry. It was tabled. On the campaign trail in San Francisco, Julian Castro said he was the first of the candidates to call for impeachment spoke in the mission and attended an event at city hall speaking about the need for congressional over sight. You can see with your eyes what is going on here and it is inappropriate for a president to try and leader do the politi dirty work against a political opponent. The stakes are high. 15 democrats in ent trhave come out in favor of an impeachment inquiry but could face a fierce back lash if the investigations back fire. In the south bay prosecutors say a 68yearold man from missouri flew san jose and set small fires near the reservoir last week. He is now under arrest for arson. Accused of lighting paper on fire and throwing them out of his rental car. The fires were set over two days beginning last friday. No injuries or damaged structures reported but the fires burned 128 acres. He was arrested as he was returning his rental car on monday. He has no known connections california and prosecutors say it is not clear why he targeted the bay area. You dont expect your skid going to get burned when you go to day care. Safety concerns at s and accidents are always easy to find. Plus meet nancy, one of four people running for San Francisco District Attorney. She tells us what her priorities will be if she wins. And frightening moments for firefighters in San Francisco, coming up the house fire that lead to a roof collapsing. A roof collapsed during a houses fire in San Francisco tonight. Crews responded to the home on thorton avenue after 7 00 p. M. They say flames were shooting from the top of the house when they arrived. The fire spread to the houses next door and after that crews decided they needed to pull back. We are aware we had a compromised fire roof and we pulled crews out and the roof had a partial collapse toward the rear. Crewswere able to put the fire out. 50 firefighters were working the fire. No one was injured. Activists protested in San Francisco demanded more action to combat climate change. It got underway before the work day started in the financial district. They blocked access to intersections and banks. It was mainly peaceful but a few protesters were detained. Some wells fargo employees had to wait outside because their doors were blocked. We want to hold corporations accountable. Our action is nothing compared to the violence that corporations like wells fargo are taking around our earth. The protesters also created a huge mural along two blocks of montgomery street. Organizers say it is meant to create a vision of a sustainable and safe world necessary for survival. The election, less than six weeks away and the race for District Attorney in San Francisco. The first time no incumbent is running in more than a century. Tonight the first in a series of reports on the candidates. Ktvus amber lee introduces us to one of the candidates running. Reporter there are two women and two men in the race if District Attorney. I spoke with nancy tongue. She says her 18 years as a prosecutor sets her apart from the other candidates. I am a candidate for District Attorney. Reporter handing out Campaign Flyers asking for votes as she pounds the pavement in china town. Saying hello to people. Reporter with her biggest supporter by her side, her father. She hopes to become the First Chinese District Attorney. Reporter a career prosecutor is currently on leave from the District Attorneys office. She spent 11 years with the San Francisco District Attorneys office and also worked in the state attorney generals office. I have an understanding from the inside that nobody else does. Reporter she says as District Attorney she would be tough on crime. Start tackling the dayto day crimes that affect most san franciscans. Property crimes, auto burgly, retail theft. Drug dealing. The 44yearold says those cases are opportunities for intervention that could lead to prevention. She would put into Place Community centered justice to improve the quality of life. Hopefully i will be able to change that after november. I hope you can change it. Reporter she put representatives from the District Attorneys office in each neighborhood to address concerns particular to that community. Including bilingual services. When we address what is wrong in each neighborhood we start to make sure that Public Safety is addressed in a way that is meaningful to communities. She says as District Attorney she knows she can make a difference. Having worked in the District Attorneys office side by side with the prosecutors that are still in the District Attorneys office, i thought there are improvements that could be made to enhance Public Safety. Reporter it is a place they trusted. Where they took their first daughter with no problems. After the accident she followed up. When you give your kid over to somebody you want to know it is safe. Reporter she found the licensing database only goes back five years online. Anything older has to be looked up and reviewed in person. Something most parents dont have the time to do. We went searching and found a long list of injuries and accidents in the files that are not available online. A child was discovered with Second Degree burns. Staff at one day care gave a child food they were allergic too on multiple occasions and failed to report where the child was hurt and needed stitches. A day care was written up for not having food for 30 kids. And being infested with mice. Santa rosa, an outbreak. 15 kids sick in one day at one facility and inspectors found kids napping in cots unless you have the time and the sophistication to be able to go down to the state department and look through the records, you dont know. The state says putting the pages online would be online but if you have all the information, some parents still dont have a choice. Right now in california there is a huge shortage of day care. Reporter blame californias housing crisis and high cost of living. Child care providers have high rents, they have to pay for utilities, insurance and fees to stay open or to care for more children. This shows a woman snorkeling, moments later she began noticing her from the beach. Her snorkel was going in and out of the water and i thought it was weird. Reporter she told her sister and they ran into the water to check on the woman. She wasnt breathing. Her arms were hanging there. She wasnt kicking or anything like that. I thought that was a sign something was wrong. Reporter someone performed cpr and she regained consciousness. An ambulance rushed her to the hospital in serious condition. The sisters are glad they were able to help. It is Pretty Amazing because we can now say we saved someones life. It is bittersweet. It is unclear what caused her to lose consciousness. Hawaiian Officials Say snorkeling deaths doubled in the past five years there. 31 people died in hawaii from snorkel last year and 50 needed emergency responses. Some deaths are blamed on snorkeling mask wheres they inhale Carbon Dioxide and pass out. But the sisters say she wasnt wearing that type of mask. He says snorkelers should receive training before getting into the water. Even the masks that are good, potentially could be misused and a person not understanding they are misusing it, not making a proper seal.
