Reporter frank and julie, the Spokesman Says the layer underneath the pavement on that runway was actually in better condition than they thought when they dug in. And so that sped up the process. But still passengers, they have either blocked 11 days and theyre expected to have at least one more day of delays. Runway relief on the way. Sfo officials announced the reconstruction project that shut down runway since september 7 is wrapping up earlier than expected. The shutdown has created chaos for many sfo passengers. We got on board seattle. The pilot came out and spoke to us and said there had been ongoing construction at the airport in San Francisco. Reporter this passenger says luckily her flight landed on time, but thousands of other passengers have had flights canceled, delayed, or diverted since the project began. I couldnt believe that an airport as big as San Francisco didnt start making plans in advance, telling me just a few days before my scheduled travel that i have an option of changing. That wasnt an option for me. Reporter this woman had to take a rideshare across the bay to Oakland Airport because her business creek was diverted there. Many people are angry that the airport and the airlines did not notify them earlier. Sfo Spokesman Says they notified the faa as required by the runway closure. He says the faa is responsible for adjusting the flight landing capacity for every airport. They say theplan was to take three weeks to repave runway 28 left where it intersects two shorter runways and scrape down to the base layer. And we are essentially going into an area that had not been touched. We really didnt know what kind of conditions the soil boots beneath the surface was going to be like. Reporter turns out the soil was more stable than expected. Allowing workers to finish the 16. 2 million federally funded runway reconstruction in less time. We are still expecting delays throughout the day on thursday and then even after the runways reopen for the remainder of the night on thursday. We will probably still continue to see some residual delays. But really ay morning will be that reset button for us. If it will make it faster and future for everybody to get in and out of here and not have to wait for so long, taxiing around the runway is a little sacrifice that will go a long way. Reporter and the passenger advocates say the airline and the faa, they should have reduced flights to reduce the burden on passengers. And they say all parties should meet to discuss lessons learned. The airport should have gotten well in advance with the airlines and the faa to reduce the amount of traffic at that airport during that time.
