It is our favorite time of year, we are getting into fall. I was saying a little earlier that the weather around here is going to start feeling a little bit fall like. That doesnt mean that is how its going to be in late september. I think on the 22nd it is official. We want to get to breaking news weve been following all morning long on interstate 80 where a big rig of live chickens crashed and caught fire. We are live in San Pablo Dam road where the westbound lanes are shut down. Melissa alyssa, any word on when crews will clear the scene . Reporter they said it could still be a couple of hours. There is a tow truck getting ready to remove the truck that was caring 1000 live chickens. They were in cages when the driver lost control, crashed in the truck on fire. Hundreds of chickens were managed managed to escape. Firefighters put on gloves and had to help roundabout. I asked him what that was like and one firefighter told me that out of the top five of the calls he is been on, this was one of the toughest. Animal control had to come out and bring a horse trailer to get all of the chickens out of lanes of traffic. I think it is the coordination of getting the chickens that are still alive off of the trailer. It is a situation where we dont want the trailer to fall with the chickens that are there. They are alive and not dead. We want to make sure that we handle them with care. We deal with everything. We really do. We see everything, and we have had cattle on the roads before. We few years ago, but we have never had anything to this amount of quality quantity, and this is really sad. These chickens were on their way to a processing plant. They were with a Company Called pittman farms, which is in the fresno area, according to chp. At around 3 40 am, the driver of the truck lost control as he was heading toward the overpass at san pablos dam road. He hit the side of the overpass and had a second vehicle. Then the truck went up in flames. I did get a chance to speak with the driver of the second vehicle. He told me he is happy to be alive. Once he hit it, i saw him jackknife. Then i saw fire, smoke, my airbags went off, and i could not see anything else because the airbags went off. One big issue we are dealing with here on scene is the amount of oil and fuel and they are in the lanes of traffic. They are putting sand over it and theyre trying to get the area cleaned up and safe and ready for traffic to continue through. And all westbound lanes through san pablo do remain closed. One piece of good news is the engineers were out here early this morning checking on the Structural Integrity of that overpass. They tell us that everything is okay. That is the overpass that was hit by the truck early this morning. We are told the injured chickens will be euthanized and the chickens that did survive may continue onto the processing plant. It is up to the gunners at this point. Reporting live in san pablo, ktvu, mornings on 2. Now, Hurricane Dorian is a category two storm. Many people will be in a greater understanding of the experience of Sexual Assault victims from reading her book. I think it is important to remember that her case is not unique. This cage case led to the judge being voted out of office in a recall. They have uncovered more Security Problems at the Space Community college. Our team found surveillance cameras that were broken, blocked, or blurry. They are telling us that dozens of cameras are basically useless . Stroke you can call it a lack of maintenance mishandling of money or mismanagement of priorities, but we found the last time any attention was paid to the cameras was in june. At all four of the Peralta College campuses, dozens of cameras right now are not working. It is easy to see that there is nothing to see except the signs that cameras are broken and they have been that way for quite a while. It does scare me because you could be walking up an alleyway and something terrible could happen and there is no evidence. For anyone at Laney College in oakland, it is not a secret. Cameras on camera campus are not keeping watch. With things happening right outside, and i called the sheriffs deputies and they see nothing but leaves so we have to choose between the camera or trees. We should not have to make the choice. Reporter alum a 13 yearold 13 your employee is frustrated knowing that what she sees can often be missed by deputies. Everything that happens in an urban environment happens here. Do you fill the campuses prepared for that . Know. Absolutely not. Reporter their finding calls from everything from car breakins and robberies to assault. Despite Alameda County sheriffs deputies out patrolling everyday patrolling campus, they cant be everywhere. These are the various cameras on all of the campuses. Reporter the lieutenant says this extensive camera system monitors 300 spots across the four e. Bay campuses. We noticed something. What are these red exes here . Some of the red exes, it depends. Some of them go in a buffering mode because there is something going on with the connection, then some are just down in general. Like i said, it could be a connectivity issue. It could be an actual problem with the camera. Reporter for safety reasons, he would not say how many are down. Is that frustrating to you . It is because the camera system, like i said before, is a layer of security. It would be great to have all of them working. For financial records show the board of trustees covered outstanding bills for repairs and upgrades, but it wasnt enough to fix every camera. And the contract is since expired. A district spokesperson said right now that the number of malfunctioning cameras are not enough to be concerned about. I know my boss got his car broken into four or five times, and he parks right in front of the Welcome Center where we work. Reporter comps crimes on campus are not uncommon, especially with cameras not working. Just in the parking lot, car breakins and thefts. Lack of camera views, limited amount of cameras or inoperable cameras make solving the crimes nearly impossible. To investigators at random Police Reports and fod s because cameras were not working. Instead, students, employees, neighbors pay the price for stolen purses, smashed windows or other issues. When you have Police Reports is so you could not solve a crime because the camera was not present, what goes through your mind . That part gets frustrating because i would like every crime to be solved. Who doesnt want their crimes to be solved. For now, deputies rely on their own eyes and ears to build relationships and spot dispositions suspicious activities. The best layer is having boots on the ground. Having officers walk around. A camera can only do so much. It is important that we are Walking Around deterring anything from happening in the first place. There is no indication if and when all of the broken cameras will be fixed. The meeting was held wednesday to discuss a potential new contract with the company that has made those camera repairs in the past. There is even talk of replacing the entire system. Before any money is spent, there would have to be some board approval. This isnt the only issue on these campuses right now. They have a long list, and it starts at the top. There are leadership issues, but new people are here. They want to clean this up. Number one, we have the cameras the need to be fixed for safe reasons, and also the fire alarm systems do not work but they are hoping to get all of that fixed by midseptember. That sounds expensive. Very expensive and that is part of the problem. They say there is not enough money to do all of this, but it is critical if you want to keep enrollment numbers are up. And keep everyone safe on campus. If you have a tip that you would like to investigate, call the number on the line or email at ktvu 2 investigates at fox tv. Com. As well as my trainer as a american heritage. Im half chinese, half american. How did you prepare for . It was already ingrained. Just the martial arts, San Francisco background, and ethnicity as well. You want to give these roles proper respect is that what youre trying to say . When you talk about bruce lee is an icon, you have to approach with very much respect. Absolutely.
