There is growing pressure in washington to pass a long stalled bill designed to curb gun violence. As ray bogan reports, with the recent mass shooting cratic law republicans to get on board. This week, a fourth member of the nras board resigned. In washington, ray bogan, fox news. Our next guest says we are truly serious about solving the epidemic of gun violence, if so, we have to take the politics out of the discussion and instead, rely on the research being done by experts in this field. Thomas plant is a professor of psychology at santa clara university. Thomas, thank you so much for joining us today. First, you say we must treat Mass Shootings in this country like a Public Health problem. What exactly does that mean . Exactly. Mass shootings in the United States should clearly be treated as a Public Health problem. We have models of Public Health interventions that have worked very successfully in the past with car safety, with smoking cessation, and so forth. We can employ this for gun violence. There are leading experts in the fields of Public Health as well as behavioral science and so forth that can help and there is quality research. So at the end of the day, i think you want to listen to the experts rather than politicians and so forth because the experts actually know how to change behavior and how to make the community safer. So how do we make it more difficult for people who are most likely to commit these acts of violence to access the weapons that they are using, in many cases, these highpowered assault rifles . That is right and we have to decide what kind of community and society do we want to live in . Some people, of course, embrace Second Amendment rights and feel they should be able to buy not only hunting rifles and handguns but also military style semiautomatic rep weapons. Others feel like, no, we should be careful about who has access to these. We have to be careful about what kind of environment and in community that we want to live with. Experts suggest if you want to keep military style weapons away from people, you have to put up more and more obstacles to accessing them. For example, the shooter and gilmour, 19 years old, was legally able to purchase a semi automatic weapon in the vada and bring it across state lines. He was not legally able to buy a beer in california or any state. Or rent a car. For example. So we have to make decisions, as a society and a community about what kind of community we want to live in and, using a Public Health model, that would suggest putting more and more obstacles between people and highpower military style weaponry. Obviously, you have heard the debate is wrapped up in this country right now and lawmakers discussing what the next steps should be. There is obviously talk about enhancing background checks for gun purchases, talk about potentially banning assault weapons, discussion about the socalled red flag while laws to compensate weapons for people who potentially pose a threat. What are the steps used you think lawmakers should take to make a difference . First of all they should consult with Public Health experts, behavioral science experts, psychologists and others who know something about it. The second thing is background checks will only take it so far. Researchers found, studying every mass shooter, believe it or not, since the 1960s in the United States, and a lot of these folks dont have Mental Health background problems. They dont have psychiatric backgrounds. A lot of them, a background check, they would pass with flying colors so Something Like background checks assume that the person that you are looking for might either have a criminal record, that is one thing or Mental Health history. But we know that folks that have Mental Health illness like depression or anxiety or schizophrenia or bipolar are not at higher risk of committing these Violent Crimes as other people and many of these mass shooters do not have a Mental Health background. So, no red flags for people to see. We have to leave the discussion there, unfortunately, thomas plant, professor of psychology at santa clara university. We really appreciate your time, thank you. Thank you for having me, sort sir. Award and at the jail where Jeffrey Epstein apparently killed himself has been reassigns to a reachable office during the investable investigation. This by adding something new to id cards. Kids in grades 7 through 12th grades will now find Contact Information for Suicide Prevention hotline on their student ids. Southern california state senator, anthony port and tino lobbied for the addition of the Important Information and joins us now live from his office in glendale. Thank you for being here, senator. Why did you fight so hard for this change . First of all, im a dad. As you know, parents are struggling with students with depression and other problems in Mental Health. Oftentimes, a lack of services and information so when the idea was brought to my attention, that maybe we should make this information readily available to students by putting it on student ids, i said what a great idea. And so, most students will need it but for that student who is struggling and needs to talk to somebody for help, it is going to be right there on their student id card so they can access it. This is one of those things where we will never know when we make a difference but i know we are going to make a difference. There was some resistance to the idea with some people feeling a little uncomfortable about talking about suicide and Mental Health so openly. But you believe that is really what we should be doing . Absolutely. That is precisely why this is important and that is another benefit that has happened. A lot of parents have stopped me and said, hey, my child brought it home and talked to me about it and thats part of this issue of bringing Mental Health out of the shadows. We will talk about our cholesterol, our wait, many things about our health but we dont necessarily talk about ourselves when we are struggling with depression and Mental Health and certainly, many parents are reluctant to talk about their own childrens struggles with rental health and these are issues that affect every family, every demographic, every race. They are not tied to any one culture or one segment of our population and we really need to get it out of the shadows because i believe, the more we talk about it, the more we will get help to those who need it and, you kn, i dont know if you know but my older brother committed suicide a decade ago and what struck me the most about that is the number of people who came up to me and shared their own personal story because by my becoming part of the club, which is a family victimized by Mental Health, they felt comfortable telling me about their son, their daughter, their aunt, their grandmother, their nephew, all struggling with Mental Health and it sort of, people that had never mentioned it to me before felt comfortable and i said, i have to do something about it and my district is no different than other districts where you read tragically about a teenager who has taken their own life and i dont want to read another story like that and having this information readily available is going to help somebody, then we should do it. It is indeed very personal to you. Is this something that will be on cards from now on or just a 1 your test program . No, from now on. All schools from seventh through college have to put it, seventh grade through college have to put it on the student ids. I have had young people text me. Actually, my daughter who will be a senior this year, when she got her student id, texted me a picture of it. I have a diver whose daughter is a middle School Student who texted me and what is positive is that it is stimulating the conversation. Now, this is a permanent program. Most schools print their own ideas ids and have their own technical ability to do it so it is not an onerous, mandate at all but there were some schools that sort of crinkled their nose and said, we dont really want to have that conversation. Frankly, if there is a school that doesnt want to have this conversation, to me, that tells me that is a school that just renew did it desperately needs to have a conversation. And by having it on the card, many people will have the conversation. Senator anthony portantino, take you thank you for having that time for talking with us. The jury in the ghost ship trial continued today on the seventh day of deliberations. The jurors are deciding whether Derick Almena and max harris are responsible for the deaths of 36 people in the warehouse fire in december, 2016. So far, the jury of 9 women and 3 what men has had only two questions but today, Defense Attorneys say the group asked for a readout of Derick Almenas testimony and the testimony of two others. Specifically they asked for all of Derick Almenas testimony, and they asked for transcripts but the way the court does it, it actually has the Court Reporter read back the testimony so that is a lengthy amount of testimony. The jurors also asked to review the testimony of mikel bouchard, the other person who founded the ghost ship warehouse but they also wanted to hear the testimony of ryan okeefe. New Research Suggests a majority of teenagers turned to social media to stay informed. Up next, we will talk next with a representative from Common Sense Media about the result of their new survey. San francisco firefighters are known for saving lives. Now, they are battling bedbugs. We will have details coming up. The next american chinese original is here. New sichuan hot chicken. For a heart breaking limited time only at panda express. The San FranciscoFire Department is battling an infestation of bedbugs with 3 different fire stations affected including station 29 near potrero hill where we find christien kafton. That it doubled as the bedbugs are not impacting Fire Services but a pesky problem. Yeah, it sure is. Reporter first off, we will make sure we let everyone know that station 29 behind me as well as patient 13 and 36, all of them still operational even as they work to get rid of any bedbugs they might have inside. Symphysis fire confirms two stations, 13 and 29, have bedbugs, thirds, station 36 is being inspected. San francisco fire says the stations are open and working well pest control experts work to eradicate bedbugs. The Fire Department said in part, we are taking Everything Possible to mitigate this and remove them from firefight houses and enter the safety of employees. Today, the firehouses released a response saying our firefighters respond to houses every day whether unknown hazards and conditions. We are aware of the matter and raise concerns with the administration. Reporter this specialist is bedbugs are perfectly designed to suck blood from their hosts. It comes up and just pierces your skin with a straw, kind of like a capri son and drink your blood. Reporter he says all it takes is a few bedbugs or a pregnant female and youve got an infestation on your hands. He says there are any number of ways for them to hitch a ride into anyones home. All it takes is a brief visit to an infested environment and a brush against a common household item. Chairs, curtains, whatever, if you brush up against the bedbug and the bedbug latches onto you, it can potentially come into your dwelling place. Reporter county health says the bedbug infestation is an ongoing problem in San Francisco. The city requires landlords to begin extermination within 40 hours of notification of infestation. The notification does not reflect the overall cleanliness of the home. Bedbugs only feed off one thing, blood. So it doesnt matter how filthy your cleaner environment is. There are only going to be looking for that blood meal. Reporter we did try to talk with firefighters at various locations, number of them wanted to talk on camera, in particular, about the bedbug situation. We do have one more tip from our pest control specialist but if you are traveling and concerned about bedbugs, consider keeping your luggage in the bathtub pick he says the slippery area will make it difficult for bedbugs to to get in. Keeping the luggage inside the back bathtub may make it harder to bring back hitchhikers into your home. The firefighters are being encouraged to clean the linens, their clothing, so it doesnt come obviously, the problem doesnt spread within stations but then i hope they dont take the bedbugs home when they are off duty. That is one of the concerns about this is they can hitch a ride. You heard how easy it was for them to hitch a ride and certainly, none of these Firefighters Want to bring bedbugs to their own home so they are being encouraged to wash clothing and extremely hot water, be diligent to make sure they dont have the problem spread elsewhere. Right now 3 stations are affected. Thank you. It turns out most teenagers are not turning to traditional News Organizations to get caught up on current events. A new poll by survey monkey and Common Sense Media finds 75 of teens get their news from social media platforms, especially youtube, twitter and facebook. Joining us to talk more about this survey, mike rob, senior director of research at Common Sense Media. Mike, thanks for coming on today. We appreciate it. So you found that most teenagers are turning specifically to celebrities and influencers on social media to get up to speed on the news. Why is this potentially problematic . It used to be in the past kids would get their news from tv or newspapers. Or the radio but increasingly, it is Facebook Live streams, Snapchat Stories and youtube and the question is, how do we determine the quality of information that kids are getting from nontraditional news sources and the more that kids are turning to things that are online, from celebrities or personalities, we have to be asking ourselves, do they have enough necessary Critical Thinking skills to be able to really interrogate the information they are getting. And you particularly highlight youtubes algorithm in terms of how the site recommends new video spec you said thats particularly concerning. Why is that . So 50 of teenagers who use youtube to get news say it primarily gets news from the recommendations after they watch a video so if youre watching a video about a particular news event and youtube suggests the next video, that is how teens are getting their news. The current concern is the algorithm being used to the next video is not transparent. We dont know how it is collected and it is possible kids are getting pushed down, rapid holes in the information that may be designed to attract attention to make people emotionally aroused are outraged but might not necessarily reflect high quality critical information. So are teenagers recognizing that News Organizations are, in all likelihood, more trustworthy, we hope, then some of the social media sources where there are getting information . That is interesting. When you asked that question, 70 say that a News Organization generally gets the facts right. And celebrities and influencers and personalities online about 40 of them state they generally get the facts right. So that is a good thing for us. Good. Yes. So you know, its a good vote of confidence for News Organization but 4 out of 10 teens say they think what they are seeing from the personalities online is getting the facts straight. If i look to the classroom and said 40 are getting their information that way, that is a concern for me because again, we need to be teaching the News Literacy skills necessary to help kids now, on one hand, whether to share something that might be a suspicious new story but in the long run, being able to ask the kinds of questions they need to about the news stories they are watching like who made this, why did they make this and what are they leaving out . It is sort of a good time that a lot good sign that a lot of teenagers are trying to keep up with the new so thats good, i thin in and of itself. What do you think we all can do better as traditional News Organizations to try to reach that younger audience . That is a great question. One of the things we found in earlier research was kids said they felt neglected or misrepresented by the news. So part of me wonders if they are seeking some of that out online, maybe they feel like they are neglected more and online environments, by celebrities and personalities and it gives them, to which the extent that traditional News Organizations can affect teams, it is a fascinating conversation and we have to live there. That is mike rob, senior director of research at Common Sense Media. Thank you for coming on. Thank you. Game 1 of round 1 of this years bay bridge series and a lot on the line for both the giants and the ace. We will set the scene from oracle park, coming right up. Reporter yeah, guys, a lot on the line for the giants and the as which makes for a more exciting bay bridge series not that you need anymore because the whole bay area gets fired up for this thing and i will tell you what, you can already tell being out here pregame the number of spectators already on the field, twice what we normally would see, the number of media members here on hand to cover the game, about twice what we would normally see so it is definitely a feeling of intensity, it has a playoff deal already and we are still a couple of hours from first pitch. We showed you video from early warmups of both teams is the as came all the way across the bay. Nice for them to play a road game here in San Francisco and we talk about the wildcard races on both sides for the visiting as, they are only two games back so obviously, within striking biz distance. The giants are 2 1 2 games out which sounds close but they have 5 teams they have to leapfrog so the giants have little margin for error coming off a 3 out of 4 series against philadelphia so playing good baseball. The as one last years bay bridge series so the giants know that and maybe there is some payback on their minds. Both clubhouses, energy intensify. When this day comes, it is a different feeling when i wake up. Just a little more excited, a little more, feels like a special occasion on the schedule so i always have to remember to put a College Shirt on because we dont wear one at home but on the roads, they are my wrote attire. I think it is exciting for the fans. The fans really get a chance to get intimate with each other every year and the atmosphere of these games is a lot of fun. It will be an exciting time in the stands and i think that is how it felt on the other side. It is a fun atmosphere to play in. Maneuvered from stephen vogrin. Who played with the athletics for several years. The he told me the as are the only Major League Team he has never played against and obviously, that will change here tonight. So a lot of fun for him and mark cannon who grew up in the area and a lot of fun for everyone involved, especially those who know about the rival is vic the giants and as, both teams with playoff aspirations.
