Coming up in a moment, an event in history that expose a modernday racial divide in america. Just minutes, we sit down with the former governor of virginia, we will talk about his experiences after unite the right rally, turned violent in charlottesville. Welcome back, it has been almost 2 years since a unite the right rally led to violent clashes between white supremacist and counter protesters in charlottesville virginia. One woman was killed when police say a man rammed his car into a crowd of people protesting the rally. In the aftermath, president tom said there were very fine peopl not progress has been made. In preventing people with opposing ideologies from becoming violent and acting on their anger. In the new boveor, terry, takes a deep l and the rise of nationalism in america, we are happy to have terry join us this morning, thanks for being with us. Thanks for having the. In the immediate aftermath of the incident in your state you said you had a message to all white supremacist, you said my message is plain, go home you did not miss words. I will ask you why you chose those few and simple words and contrast that with what we heard from the president. I opened the book with my conversation with President Trump that morning and explained to him i got 1000 neo nazis whites the premise screaming those vile things, telling members of the jewish faith we are going to bring you likely bring to an office. Ive never in my life experienced anything like this. I told the president this was not the community for him. He got to stop this hatred, i said mister president you have to stop dividing us and he the right thin for hours, and came out and refused to use the words neonazi and said they were good people on both sides. I knew the world was watching, these folks came from 35 states, i knew i had to say. I told him to go hom the heck out of virge america. They are not wanted. You prayed around like you are a bunch of patriots and you are not. You are a bunch of cowards. I am sure you listen to the president when he spoke earlier this week, police say it was carried out at the hands of a man who was upset over the immigrant invasion in texas and the United States. Your reaction to the president s words again he did not use the word neonazi, white supremacist, he did call the attacker evil, wicked, but did not walk right up to the line you did. This is the first time a president to addresses you know bill clinton in oklahoma city, barack obama had charleston, george bush had 9 11. This president went out on a National Crisis and he was somewhat culpable. It is his words. You have to remember when he ran for president he retreated neonazi and white supremacist tweets. Who does this . He said that mexicans were criminals, he wanted to ban fr country, his rhetoric has really wrap things up and divided people. This killer from el paso sites white identities. Cites Donald Trumps tweets. So he is culpable for these types of activities. He shouldve gone in front of that press conference and said i apologize. We have to bring this language down. We have to have universal background checks. And he talked about hate language but he is responsible. He is the chief hate language. He is the chief White Nationalist of america. Where do you draw the line between personal responsibility, the person who pulls out the gun and pulled the trigger versus the words and ideologies that might be inciting that person . They are both culpable. Equally so . I mean ultimately you have to blame the person who pulled the trigger. But, he was incentivized of what happened in charlotte so. This is the point i make. These folks used where heads into it at night. They came from under their rocks. You used to feel like it was ancient history. Something the mo yes ed states can say these evil things, i ki they were not good people on the neonazi side. There werent. Whu say they are good people . The president continually misses the point. The book is through the history of virginia, the issues of racism, john lewis writes the forward for me, the later part of the book is about where do we go from here, how do we end this . Lets talk about the call to action. You detail some incredible stories of the people involved in that riot and the response, lets talk about today moving forward. What is your call to action . First of all what charlottesville did i think people talked racism have been dealt with, wasnt an issue anymore, it showed that it is alive and well in this country. Right white people are not comfortable talking about this issue. They like their little reconciliation, enough of the talk. It is time to do something. As long as we have inequities in school or africanamerican children dont get the same quality education whether it be teachers or and for structure. Dont have the same supplies. Healthcare Delivery System and affordable housing, we are going to have racism in this country. We also have a corrupt criminal Justice System and a racist one on sentencing. I had gentlemen in virginia who had five robberies, he was a drug addict, no one was ever hurt, he took the total that was 535. For 535, what you think his sentence was . I am assuming it is more than i would guess. Two life sentences 130 years. I can sit here all day, we have to in this. It is time to quit talking, it is time to take action. As governor, you know i restored more than any governor in history. I had more pardons than any governor in virginia history. We need elected officials who are going to lean in, quit talking, and do something. We have to end the inequities in education and we have to Start Talking about hatred and racism. Earlier. K6 kristi you almost sound like youre running for office, will you again . I am probably not done. Therell be something at their at some point. If you are young thank you so much. It is a good thought provoking read. It is beyond charlottesville. It is Available Online and on store shelves, go to ktvu.
