People have told us they want. The democrats seemed united on gun policy, but differences emerged on other topics. Good evening, im julie haener. Im andre senior in for frank. We saw more policy splits tonight as the moderate candidates sought to distance themselves from the more progressive. Paul chambers is here. Andre, julie, very interesting. Tonights ten candidates were a mix of progressives and centrists to different approaches to issues such as Climate Change and immigration. Bernie sanders and Elizabeth Warren were the focus in a controlled debate as they suggested free college and medicare for all. Mayor Pete Buttigieg, an afghanistan vet, pledged to pull troops from afghanistan if elected. For many this may be the last time to debate on a national stage. Reporter the second round of democratic debates took place in detroit, michigan. Night one centered around two of the candidates in the group Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. Some of their opponents came out swinging. Last year democrats flipped 40 republican seats in the house and not one of those 40 democrats supported the policies of our frontrunners at center stage. Folks, we have a choice. We can go down the road that schnatter sanders and senator warren want to take us which is with bad policies. Reporter a multitude of topics debated, trade tariffs and others. Donald trump disgraces the office of president every single day. Lets get real, tonight we debate but ultimately we have to beat donald trump. We have got to take on trumps racism, sexism, xenophobia, and come together. Reporter on the topic of race, the candidates debated on how to make the u. S. A more level playing field. Some want to look at paying africanamericans reparations, others say investing in education and acknowledging that slavery led to the economic gap. The very foundation of this country, the wealth we have built, the way we became the greatest country was on the backs of those who were kidnapped and brought here by force. We need to recognize that when it comes to the economic gap between blacks and whites in america, it does come from a great injustice that has never been dealt with. Reporter as the topic moved to gun violence, this past weekend shooting at the garlic shooting in gilroy was discussed. Some pledged to push for universal background check, others say more needs to be done. Flag Mental Health risks and an toebd assault weapons. Things like what i carried overseas in uniform that have no business in american neighborhoods in peacetime. We were going to go out and take on the nra, and we pass purple state. We passed universal background checks. We limited magazine capacity. We did the basic work. Reporter the first for the governor of montana. Prochoice, prounion populist democrat that won three elections in a red state. And this is a very packed debate on a topic of immigration. The candidates seem split on whether to decriminalize those who cross illegally. There was a split on the Green New Deal and the best way to combat Climate Change. Marian wilson received some of the loudest applause of the night. People across the bay area gathered for watch parties tonight as the ten democrats squared off in detroit. This was the scene at the Starline Social Club on Martin Luther king way in oakland. A large crowd watched the debate on the big screen tvs. There were plenty of cheers and rting event. Out the twohour ktvu s political analyst brian joins us now. Your first impressions, was there a clear winner tonight . It was like a sporting event. Not a clear winner a divide between the progressive wing of the party, frankly, and the more mod rat wing of the party. And they fought it out. They did. Did any of the lower polling candidates make a good impression, breakout moment even, for them . No, i think were coming quickly towards four or five candidates. Well see what happens tomorrow night. That will take the message forward. What you did see tonight, however, was Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren sort of teaming up a little bit. Watch some of those cutaways, they were talking to each other. I think the idea is, hey, weve got to move the party to a more progressive stance which would be the way you would do it in a primary. And eventually come back in the other direction. But it looked like those two knew they were kind of target rich tonight. And in fact, they were. A lot of candidates went after them. You mention progressive and moderate when you mention warren and sanders, they were next to each other. Did one do better than the other . And how are they impacting the progressive vote . Will one have to go . Yes. Both cannot survive this. One will have to go. I thought Elizabeth Warren had a better night than Bernie Sanders. And i think most of the people who watched as were getting results in from polling and other sources pretty much agree she had a good night for her progressive ideas. The longer those two stay in together how does that affect the other candidates . They are taking up a lot of air time and space. And it does affect the other people because they dont get the air time. Theres complaints about the amount of time each person gets during these forums, these debates. And obviously the camera finds itself on Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders most often. Lets talk about the moderate side versus the progressive. John hickenlooper said quote if were going to force americans to make radical changes, theyre not going to go along. Hes referencing things like medicare for all that sanders is pushing. Will this lack of cohesiveness be a problem moving forward . I think the party would like to see people coalescing around themes, but now is not the time. You have this divide. You watched Pete Buttigieg and other people on that stage saying we need to be more moderate, that some ideas about Free Education and immigration where you allow people to just come over the boarder and other things you heard out of warren and sanders were not pal atable to the american public. You heard that over and over. This isnt going to fly. We cant win this way. Tonight was the first group. The next group goes tomorrow night. What are you expecting out of joe biden and Kamala Harris . I think a lot of people are thinking those two are going to have a dust up. My own view, may be wrong, is that theyre going to avoid each other. Theyve got their own campaigns to run. She made her play with joe biden in the last debate forum. And biden says hes going to be a lot tougher this time. Im not sure theyre going to lock up, but they have to get their word out there. I think at the end, to andres earlier question, i think this is coming down to biden and harris and warren and maybe pick somebody else, sanders. Before we go, who do you see the other candidates going after more . Biden or harris . I think this is the time that Kamala Harris has to take some hard questions. That would be my guess. The progressives were taking center stage tonight and tomorrow the moderates. And joe biden has to come out and put on a strong performance. All right. Political thanks us. Absolutely. Tomorrow night ten more candidates face off for a second time. Senators corey booker and kristin jill grand along with Tulsi Gabbard are among those set to take the stage again. You know, i feel for the mother that she was in a situation where she felt hopeless obviously. I just cant imagine what was going through her mind that she felt like that was her only choice. Reporter guests coming and going at the Hotel Next Door were stunned by the crime tape and the reason for it. A lot of people would have loved to have those babies so, super sad.
