And you can come here for this update that we have been waiting for hours to get an update from police who would release information along twitter and for the official confirmation, coming from our sources. But gosh, im looking at 15 camera reporters, you heard us talking to the witnesses and the Highway Patrols here and Law Enforcement. And there is quite a lot of people here as we are trying to get our camera set up, and as we are live on tough trying to get your shot from police as we all know it will be involved earlier today and still hearing these stories come out of the frightful disturbing violence that broke out in this south bay at this south bay annual tradition. I know that it is really choppy where you are right now, a woman who gave pretty specific details as to what you saw and the beginning as we came through a little bit late. What stood out to you as to what she said . And well julie, she was a vendor and the fact she saw having a little issue with the microphone. Shes setting up in that location. She spoke to a witness at the garlic festival. Describing to us as it was happening. And the festival there, the grounds are over to the left, a live view from sky fox. Were just in a matter of minutes, as were waiting to hear from Gilroy Police. This whole situation began this evening, just as that threeday festival, the gilroy garlic festival, very popular event was coming to a close and a 41st annual event there for the gilroy garlic festival. Shots rang out near a stage, where the band was playing. And that triggered panic among the crowd. People falling, running, trying to get out of the way. And once they realized, these are gunshots. And so people were running so fast that they were tripping, running it out and to help people out of the festival as you were trying to get away after hearing those gunshots. Now here is what we know on the time the shots rang out. They were starting that encore performance that julie just mentioned a minute ago around his neck. But you could fire his a short time ago and now other members of the band, they dove under the stage. He said he heard someone shot why are you doing this and then the gunman reportedly said because im really angry. And that is what were learning about the situation happening at least until we get an update from police and how were suppose to be getting that press conference that will be starting in a couple of minutes and some of those witnesses said the shooter was wearing a machinegun type of weapon. And also to Santa Clara ValleyMedical Center and sadly three people, at least three people have been killed, 12 more wounded. We dont know any specifics about the victims, men, women, the ages of the victims. We also know at least two yes, we know so many people that either went to the festival this year and Im Feeling Lucky that the festival has been around, known as a very safe familyfriendly affair according to many people that i have spoke with. Some people were going to go to the festival, but didnt get a chance to and then this has happened, an unheard of thing that just shows you how surprising all of this was. Were joined by Public Safety expert. The former fremont battalion chief and a fema administrator. When you have this wide scale that is now we started at 5 45 this evening with multiple agencies involved. Mark from a Law Enforcement standpoint, whats likely happening in this hour . Thats a part of the discussion thats taking place right now, who is actually going to lead the press conference . And the innocent commander with the discussion, but they are also having the discussions behind the scenes on what to say and how to say it because they want to make sure they would bring calm and inform people about whats taking place especially family members. But they also want to make sure they preserve the case and they dont want to be able to put themselves in a precurious position and to give away information that might be a part of a criminal investigation or better yet as they start to proceed here, to give something a chance to develop. They want to make sure they dont provide information thats going to compromise that investigation. You said something really interesting earlier. The state of the situation, which we dont know for sure, that it has not been confirmed, there are two shooters, as you heard from one of those shooters that are down, still looking for a second person. How valuable is that in terms of the Law Enforcement standpoint, the information that you could gather from one point that could possibly help you lead you to the second person . They are trying to delve through all of that. Not just in this particular area, but also where that individual may frequent. Mark, well check back in with you in a second. Alyssa harrington is live from the scene witnessing a search happening right now. And alyssa, what can you tell us . What do you see . Reporter i can tell you police have been searching the area for several hours now. Still helicopters overhead. I just saw a vehicle with the Sheriff Department that passed me. But it appears they will be going on. We really dont want to show too much and we dont want to compromise the work and members of our Law Enforcement are doing. Were not too far away from the garlic festival. It is dark now, but just behind me, some of those white tents where a lot of people were spending their afternoon when they heard these gunshots. Some didnt realize they were gunshots. Said they sounded like fireworks, pop, pop, pop. Then everybody started running, absolutely chaotic. People tripping over one another. People were screaming, children being separated from their parents. Some people were able to get on some sort of a shuttle saying there were two Young Children that might have been four or five years old by themselves, having been separated from their parents during that chaos. At this hour, family members trying to find each other, trying to find their friends, and trying to sort some sounds people i got to speak with. It was kind of like it started and then there was a burst and then it kind of stopped for about five to ten seconds. Almost like it was a reload and then it just started again and then after that, so many people running. The first time i thought it was fireworks. The second time, someone from some area, they would get down, an active shooter. I saw them go down as we all started running. Right now we interrupted our reporter, police at a press conference shooting there, the mayor of gilroy, lets listen . This san active investigation. I would ask for the thoughts and prayers of the community and our Gilroy Police officers continue to investigate this tragic and senseless crime. Also our thoughts and prayers are going out to the victims and their families. We are again continuing the investigation. We plan on being out here all night and as we said earlier, there will be another press conference tomorrow. As the investigation will continue, our local Law Enforcement and their partners, they will investigate every aspect of this crime. And then later, you will receive Additional Information from the chief. Regarding the reunification and the ways for individuals to contact the city and reconnect with their loved ones. All right, thank you. Not providing too much, but just saying crews will be on ni here is the now. All right, im the chief of police and the city of gilroy. Obviously its one of those press conferences that you ever want to give in your community. Sure. This is one of those press conferences that you dont want to give in your community. And sort of a nightmare that you hope you never need to live in that reality and to find ours in those circumstances, where we will need to live with this today. And im going to give you some information with the information that i have right now. We have literally dozens of officers that are working on this as we speak. And so a lot more information will be back throughout the evening and in for the morning tomorrow. And all right, starting at 5 41 p. M. And there were reports of shootings, on the north side of the garlic festival area. And were in that area and engaged the suspect in less than a minute. And the suspect was shot and killed. It appears they would have come into the festival via the creek, which borders a parking area and they use some sort of a defense to be able to gain access through the secure fence line. Thats how they got into the festival area itself. And we have one suspect that we know is down. We have some witnesses reporting that there may have been a second suspect, but we dont know if engaged in any shooting or whether they may have been in some sort of a support role and that person that we have that i accounted for. And at least 15 new people injured. And we have four fatalities that we know of. Including the suspect. The officer that engaged the suspect. Obviously he had a protocol that we need to deal with for that. And in Santa Clara County, the protocol dealing with the officerinvolved shooting. Just another layer of the shooting that were investigating from the suspect. We put out a call for assistance. We had many officers in the park at the time it will get turned as we do any day during the festival. And which our accounts will be a very Quick Response time. When we put out the call for help, we gefrom the agencies across Santa Clara County and Monterey County. And i cant thank those agencies enough. They came from, you know, pretty good distances away to be there to help support and to provide assistance with our investigation. And dealing with the chaos of the scene at the time that it occurred. We have set up some things, you know, a reunification. Because were in the panic, people will go out in different ways than they came in and said how many shots were separated. So we have this area right there as the reunification area to try to reunite families that got separated. We also have a phone number for families, to be able to call and then we have people staffing those store numbers to work on the reunification contest. And that phone number is area code 4088460584. Were also asking for any witnesses because there is quite a number of people in the park. Anybody that witnessed this incident that can tell us anything that took any photographers, that perhaps video taped anything, that might be relative to this investigation, please contact us and set up a special phone number for witnesses as well. And that phone number is 408 8460583. And thats about what i know at this point in time. And you are uncertain there is a seventh suspect . Way down to identify several sides . We believe based on witnesses, it was a second individual involved in some way. We just dont know in what way. The description of this person . I do not at this point. And do we know anything about the suspect . I dont have any information on the suspect yet. That will take a little bit of time. And that will take some time, but identified and the next family notification. [ inaudible ] as i said weve gotten assistance from literally dozens of Law Enforcement agencies across two counties. So we have team working and try to track down regards regarding the second suspect. We are very hopeful the witnesses statements will help us to do that. Were there any security cameras at the festival . Security cameras . Not posted security cameras, no. Was there a person not armed . We do not know what the involvement of the second person at this point in time. Can you clarify the amount of people injured in going to some of the injuries of the range . You know, i dont know what the injuries are. I havent gotten a report on that. I do know the list theyre keeping was up to 15 people the last time i looked at it. I have no idea what the motive is at this point. [ inaudible ] sorry, i dont have specifics on that other than people avoided a subject, leaving the area they thought was associated with this person. And no way you could have engaged in the suspect, no. I do not have the age range at this point, im sorry. Well be able to get more on that as we have an update tomorrow. I do know know. What type of lesson can you tell us . The association, i dont know what type of rifle it was. Do you know the metal detectors, bags. And yes they do have to go through metal detectors. They search bags. We have very tight security for getting people into the festival. And to gain access. I have not heard that. It is an active scene, and because of the magnitude, it will continue to be active for some time. I do not know. One more question, folks. Steve, what can you say about whats happening in gilroy . No, i dont feel comfortable making an assumption, but it appears that way and it initially was that way into the festival area. Your reaction to this happening at this institution of an annual event that happens here. Whats your overall take on the violence happening in your community. Ill make that the last question. You know, the city of gilroy is an incredible community. We have incredible people here, and im very proud to have been the chief here and because of community support. A perfect example of that taking thousands of our residents that volunteer their time to come put this on for people and to raise funds through all of our Community Based organizations and charities right now and the number of people that are willing to give their time to the betterment of other people into wonderful things. And it is just incredibly sad and disheartening than an event that there is so much good from our community had to safer from that tragedy there. Im going to stop now. We have the wonderful opportunity in this community to celebrate our family through our garlic festival. The festival has been our annual Family Reunion for blow upsetting sides on the third and final time on the festival. Our 4,000 plus local volunteers would work hard every year. And they have seen this event that way and just one of the most tragic things that i have ever had to see. We all feel so upset for those impacted, friends, family, neighbors. Just a horrible thing to experience. Couldnt feel worse. Our prayers, we go out to the friends and family of loved ones affected by this. We couldnt be more thankful for the Immediate Response of the first responders. They do an amazing job quickly. And we thanked them for that. Thats all i have to say. We want to recap with the Gilroy Police chief said just a few moment ago from this tragic event that happened at the gilroy garlic festival earlier this evening. Four people have been killed including the gunman. 15 more injured. All started on the north side of the garlic festival around 5 45 this evening when gunshots rang out. Less than a minute they had engaged a suspect shot and killed. And he apparently enter the ground, using a tool to gain access to the festival ground and began shooting at random. Four people dead including the gunman , 15 more injured. Thats an active shooting scene right now. Youre watching the 10 00 news. Again, here is what we know so far. Gilroy officials just saying four people have died. Among the four people, the gunman. 12 others were hurt. The shooting was first reported at 5 45 tonight on Christmas Hill park on the final day of the festival as it was just wrapping up. We have coverage of the shooting. Ktvus Maureen Naylor is live. But first, take you to Alyssa Harrington following developments throughout the evening. After that press conference, we have some of our questions answered. Police have been searching this area near the creek for hours now, with flashlights as it is starting to get dark in this area. They now believe the shooter crossed this creek by cutting through a fence. There is still helicopters flying overhead. Police believe a second person may be involved. And thats what they are still searching for right now. I got a chance to speak to several people who were inside when this happened. They told me it was absolutely terrifying, and chaotic. They heard between 40 to 50 shots. The shooter was wearing combat gear, but he had an assault rifle. That he was just shooting at anybody. They all ran as fast as they could. Some people would jump on the back of the trucks and the cars and some of the other vendors, they droon a bus or shuttle and there were two Young Children that couldnt have been older than five without their parents, who were crying, everybody was trying to comfort them. We know over the past few hours, families have tried to come back together and find some of them at the different meeting spots, but it was absolutely chaotic. And here is what a few of them had to say. It was kind of like a burst and then it stopped for ten seconds. The first time i thought it was fire works. Then the second time i would get down. We all started running. We heard it distinctly. I just didnt recognize it. She was in charge of her group and said she ran so fast and almost in tears when i spoke to her. And i was told this happened right as a band was playing. People were dancing, suddenly these shots rang out and everybody started running. A chaotic scene. People couldnt believe it happened at all. So we were here to see what we have been saying all day from police that there was as you heard a total of four People Killed including one shooter. They said a man hunt is underway for a second person. They used a tool to cut through a fence along the perimeter. To gain access to get inside the festival on the last day. They said it all happened 5 41 this evening. The gunman, he was shot relatively quickly within a minute, but was engaged. Police engaged with him and shot him and then he had a rifle. They also say three people were killed after in addition to and they dont have any information at this point on the ages or the range of the people that have been injured. But they are searching for that second person that they saw, still trying to figure out what role that second person may have played. Take a listen. When you hear these areas and responded within a minute, shot and killed the suspect, its scary to think it would be officer hence and what could have happened. As you can imagine the festival is starting to end, everybody is exiting. Somebody decides to come in and create another station. And then within one minute, four People Killed. Thankfullythey were there. Can you imagine if they werent there . They will feel this. Weve heard it twice, incredibly sad was mentioned twice. We saw the mayor initially and the executive director. Were hearing it in their voices, incredibly sad and emotional in it. It does not mean theyre feeling this. A lot of people hurt about this constantly talking about social media that this is not suppose to be a. I want to ask you, mark, right now theres a possible second suspect, but sounds like police are still trying to piece together that part of the puzzle. Yeah, it sounded based on the police chief they have a pretty good evidence that there is a second perpetrator here as they will make sure to check that area as we said earlier, they will use infrared cameras, which allows the ability to search an area and pick up body heat. In that darkness in there. Seeds or moving moving through, the Fire Departments have it, im sure theyre using that tool. Mark, when you hear this is a verdict, 44th year of this festival, filled with families, the final day. That one person, possibly two, used a special tool, cut a hole through a fence to gain and then just started randomly shooting at people. It took planning to do this. Whgoes from a job perspectiv want to make sure theres not other people around that this isnt a part of a larger plot, but a lone individual. But unfortunately in our country, we are talking about those and who we are. Now theres a shooting at an outside festival. I dont know. Real quickly when you have four people including the gunman. 15 others wounded, three killed. What protocol, an emergency situation, how do you get the people evacuated safely. What happens in terms of Law Enforcement due at that point. What they are doing, we heard that problem throughout the radio traffic that they Fir Department medics, the medics, they actually announced theyre making entry into the facility, their partner with the Police Department, which has the arms to be able to make sure theyre safe. So they were able to get in there and do the triage quickly. But you notice those people got out of there very fast in terms of the number of folks injured to the hospital, and it was very, very good operation in terms of timing. Officers involved, certainly get them with some counseling, secure the area, make sure family are notified. Being sensitive to the investigatbetter idea of whats go we are just at that and that scale of c that there is some concern that they were put into this and not just a random gunfight or people disgruntled, the incident. It was premeditated action by the shooter to go in there and kill people. And so that in itself creates some mud flags for everybody. Certainly Law Enforcement. Who they affiliate with, social media, etc. It has been a difficult night for many people. The reaction is pouring in from lawmakers including President Trump and the governor. And here is what governor Gavin Newsome tweeted earlier this evening. Nothing short of horrific. Tonight california stands with the community. My office is monitoring the situation closely. Grateful for the Law Enforcement efforts. And President Trump has responded to the shooting tweeting, Law Enforcement is at the scene of a shooting in gilroy, california. The death has sparked outrage in rome where the italian Prime Minister and other mourners lined up to honor that Police Officer. Ktvus Jana Katsuyama joins us live in mill valley, talking to former classmates of those two young men reporter julie, those former classmates tell me the two men were known as gabe and fin. They were friends here at mount tam, graduated last year, and had met up in rome on vacation. Now both of them are locked up in jail. The two young men, 18yearold gabriel and fin elder, both graduates in mill valley were well known at the school according to former classmates. Something had been going around. Just shocking to all of us. The class of 2018 said it was a shock hearing about their arrest in italy on charges of killing an Italian Police officer after a bad drug deal. Sunday night the coffin of mario rega was escorted from the chapel in rome, draped in the italian flag. Italian police say they had stolen the backpack of a drug dealer who sold them fake drugs instead of cocaine. Police say of cocaine from rega and other responded, police say he punched one officer and elder stabbed rega. When the other officers responded, police say natoliorth punched one officer and elder stabbed rega eight times. He had just returned to work days before after his honey moon. His wife of just one month, in tears, as long lines of people paid their respects and applauded as the first prepared to leave. Sunday there was concern about a photo leaked to the press showing him blindfolded. Italian Authorities Say that was illegal. Police say both teens confessed to having a role in his death. An attorney for elder said on sunday, i could only say the investigations are still underway to better understand the facts. The young boys family is very upset about what happened. The american consulate is trying to do the best for elders protection. And fellow graduates say the we and neither of them were polite, but a lot of people liked them were friends with them. Reporter one friend had just seen gabe a few weeks before, asking about working at a local store. And any time i talked to him, he wasnt ever mean to me and he wasnt ever cruel to me in any way. He was always nice to me. Reporter the classmates also say they had another side and gabe often got into trouble. He was known to be kind of somebody who was always involved with drugs, always involved with getting in trouble. They found a long knife hidden in the ceiling and clothes that were believed to have been worn during the attack. Charges are pending. Julie . Jana katsuyama in mill valley tonight, jana, thank you. Traffic was brought to a standstill just east of the plaza earlier this evening because the woman was walking in the middle of the bridge reportedly holding a fife. It happened on the eastern span in the westbound lanes of about 4 30 this afternoon. Traffic was stopped as Highway Patrol officers with the guns drawn responded. The woman was taken into custody just after 5 00. And no word on her identity or why she was walking on the bridge. A section of lucas valley road in marin county closed for most of the day, fuel spilled from the overturned tanker. It happened after the tanker crashed around 9 00 this morning near west gate drive. The tanker overturned downward, being along the tight curve. The driver suffered a cut to the head. Crews say the cleanup involved draining the remaining 6,000 gallons of fuel from the tanker. It is much more volatile than diesel fuel is. And it is the safety of the members and the safety of the community, the largest of the concerns and the environmental hazards. Chp said the driver of the 50foot truck used a road despite the sign prohibiting drivers longer than 36 feet. And San FranciscoPolice Department hired retired officers to patrol the union square area. 350,000 has been budgeted for seven positions. The retired cops wont have guns or be able to make arrests, but will be in uniform. They say they will provide a visible deterrent and work closely with officers to address the crime. The shooting as you would look at live picture right now, four people including the gunman confirmed dead and 15 others were injured. Now we told you the gunman was dead and police were telling us theyre searching for one possible additional shooter. Yeah, we learned from the Gilroy Police officer just a short time ago. That he said this person, he came in through the north start evening. And the police chief told us that officers were in the area, right when that gunfire started and engaged the suspect within a minute of those gunshots ringing out. They said the gunman was shot and killed, armed with a rifle and had apparently entered the festival ground via a creek through a creek and then cut use a special tool to kind of hold through a perimeter fence to gain access to that festival, then started shooting before that person was shot and killed. Law enforcement agencies, multiple teams working through the night, on the scene there possibly looking for a second person involved in this tragedy. Also the news right now, criticizing San Francisco in a tweet today saying, has anyone seen what happened to Nancy Pelosis district in San Francisco . Its not recognizable lately.
