Welcome everyone to the 4. After the hearings today President Trump continued to call the probe a hoax and a witch hunt. Two tensed harington a lot of questions from lawmakers but not many specific answers from former special counsel Robert Mueller. I would have to refer you to the report. The house judiciary committee. Its not our job to determine Donald Trumps innocence. He charge of threestar general with false statements but the guy who puts his country through the saga he lives in you guys dont charge him. And then it was onto the House Intelligence Agency where mueller made it clear he would not discuss how or why the probe got started. I, criticizing the president s embrace of wikileaks in 2016 when he touted the leak dnc emails. Problematic is an understatement in terms of display. Russia stood to benefit the most with donald trump in the oval office. Director, who did the russian social Media Campaign ultimately intend to benefit . Hillary clinton or donald trump. Donald trump. As to why he would characterize it as a wishram, the president reacting. This was a really bad day for the democrats. Robert mueller did a poor job. Mueller told lawmakers he wanted to make a correction saying he did not charge the president because the office of Legal Counsel wouldnt permit it but he could not determine if the president committed a crime. Fox news. For more now we bring in our political analyst. The mueller marathon today. What exactly did we learn . If you had read the mueller report, you did not learn a whole lot more. If you are new to the process you learned one important thing, the russians were in our elections with both hands and probably did not care. They probably did not care too much about anything other than sewing problems within the democratic process. I think that was reiterated today in stark terms. We saw democrats go through and run down the list of potential acts that could have been obstruction of justice. It did not lead to any charges for the sitting president. With that being said, all of that laid bare on national tv today, was this damaging for President Trump . To the extent for people that dont know whats going on who watched it and became enraged, maybe that is a call to action. And talking to people back east they did not here a whole lot new. A lot of folks havent read that report. If they watched. It was finding people and watching any part of that five hours a day. If they did, they heard things they were not aware of and it should be troubling. It seems as those republicans went in with a strategy and they stuck to that strategy. The democrats sticking to their strategy to build this collective damning narrative against President Trump and his possible obstruction of justice. Republicans, their strategy was to question the integrity of the report in question Robert Mueller. Lets listen to radcliffe of a public and for how he question Robert Mueller. The special counsel made neither a prosecution decision or a definition of the decision you made no decision and you told us this morning and your report you made no determination so respectfully you did not follow the special counsel regulations. Okay. You did not do your job. And for republicans they were hoping to get out of here without a wild moment by democrats or a gotcha that laid bare some other issues. I think of people were watching the testimony today, i dont want to say they felt sorry for bob mueller but he wasnt on his game. A lot of people talked about that. A couple hundred times he couldnt give specific sightings for why he was saying something. I do not know that that inspire confidence in the report. And he had to walk back a couple of statements as well. I do not know that his performance will be received very well. He is 75 on august 7. That should not play into it entirely, but we talked about democrats trying to drill down on this obstruction of justice. There was an exchange where a lawmaker asked mr. Mueller if he could be charged with a crime after an office and he said yes. This is kind of testimony move the needle for democrats in terms of the issue of impeachment . Two things. If you can make the case that we have to deal with this now as opposed to later, they went on to talk about the amount of time that would pass it in the terms of statute of limitations. Suggesting that perhaps the sole motive for reelection is to get beyond the statute of limitations. These are legal questions that will be debated. Will democrats get on board with that . We will see. They are trying to figure out how many people will talk about impeachment at this point. It was clear to me at least that Robert Mueller did not want to engage in this dramatization of this report. He was not going to make the case for democrats. If you want to make that case, now is your chance. Was not your take away as well . Basically. I think there were times when i watch mueller step outside of his report to continue to remind the American People that this is serious and what the russians did was there yes. Potentially what went on behind the scenes is serious. One of our local representatives here in the bay area Eric Swalwell also a part of the hearings today. Lets listen to one exchange he had today. George papadopoulos the president s senior Foreign Policy advisor lied to the fbi about his communications about russians possession of dirt on hillary clinton. The president s Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort lied about meetings he had with someone with ties to russian intelligence. That is true. And your investigation with hanford by Trump Campaign officials use of encryption communications is that right . We believe that to be the case. There were a lot of examples brought up a potentially how mr. Trump or people in his orbit were trying to undermine the investigation. I guess the question is whether this is more of an impact for the public seeing this on tv and seeing mr. Mueller say the statements on tv. Time will tell and the dust will settle. We will see whether it moves the needle. To representatives while well one of the things i was encouraged by along with Eric Swalwell and others saying what is a learning here . We think trump is a problem but what is the learning . He talked today about a bill that would require campaigns to divulge whether they have been in contact with foreign governments. I think that is a proactive step. If we want to learn anything here, then we need to learn that there are nations that have it out for us. China, north korea, and we will see those countries in the mix in 2020. It offered another dire warning. It is happening right now. He said Something Else important to think about that this diabolical rhetoric and Everything Else and intrusion into the campaign he hoped would not become the new normal. We can hope for that because the other options are not good. For more indepth coverage of muellers testimony today head to our home page ktvu. Com.
