The tubbs fire that burned in october 2017 killed 22 people and destroyed thousands of homes in santa rosa and beyond. Firefighters risked their lives fighting this storm for weeks. After the first time, there is data showing carcinogenic, uncles and the firefighters who were there on the line. We have a San Francisco fire chief Jenny Nicholson and doctor rachel morello frosh, the Principal Investigator of the study. Rachel i will start with you, how many firefighters volunteered to be tested . So we had 180 firefighters that volunteered to provide us with samples from the study and a little over 30 of them were firefighters who were not deployed to the tubbs fire event and the rest were deployed. These are firefighters from different agencies . They are from different cities in the bay area, including San Francisco. When we say testing, he physically drew blood on these firefighters . About three weeks after the fact . Correct, the fire caught everyone by surprise, so it took a while to get out there and recruit people and get things set up to collect the samples. What did you find . Preliminary data suggests that levels of mercury, which is a chemical commonly found in Consumer Products like fluorescent light bulbs and other things, were elevated, tend to be more elevated among firefighters who were deployed, converted firefighters who were not deployed. The other thing we found was, on average, higher levels and a classes compounds commonly found in firefighting gear and foams. The firefighters deployed to the tubbs fire event had higher levels compared to those who were not deployed to the event. We had the phrase cancer causing chemicals, is it safe to say these are cancercausing chemicals . The chemicals we look that caused a lot of Health Issues we are concerned about. Some of them are likely to be t disrupt hormone systems that can affect our immune system, that can affect our nervous system functioning and other health effects. But we did not do a study, we were just comparing chemical voters for the firefighters deployed versus firefighters that were not. Whats their reaction to the results here . Im really grateful doctor morello frosh has been helping us, the San Francisco Fire Department in Cancer Prevention foundation in getting a study off the ground. I am not surprised that it has come back with showing that on average there are higher levels. And mind you, this was three weeks after the event, so maybe that had time to flesh things out of their. Its not a surprise to me, because we see this in urban firefighters as well. And the difference between , we send our urban firefighters to these wildland fighters fires, but they are wildland urban interface fires. So it used to be burning in wildland fire was just trees and grass and bushes, now its trees and grass and bushes and homes with all of these toxic chemicals in them. Its gutwrenching to me to hear the numbers, im not even a firefighter. Oh i know firefighters, my nephew is in an academy in denver right now. I dont want thinking about carcinogenic chemicals or cancer. He is living out a dream, they want to knock down flames and steve save people. I know this affects the leaders of all the departments in the state in in our country, but what can you do personally . We can do studies like this and this can be terms of the gear that we can be deployed with in wildland fires. You need better gear . Yeah, we can wear the same stuff we were in a regular house fire. We cant wear big bottle on our back because alan the wow out there we have to be mobile and move around. But the gear exists. Is it out there you just cant afford it . No, you cant come it doesnt exist. You can put a filter on somebodys face, but you need fresh air to breathe. This study was done three weeks after the camp fire last year. Another was a similar study was firefighters having blood drawn, but that was on the fire lines. What do you think would show from blood drawn from firefighters who were there, and that of the three weeks . Thats what we hope to do. Im not involved in the camp fire study, but in the future we want to do more studies where we are able to get out there in real time and to environment a sampling of the air and soil, in taking samples firefighters themselves and have broader chemicals to document what firefighters are being exposed to so that can inform how to better protect firefighters when fighting these fires on the wildland urban interface. Because they are not protected. Right now they are not protected. And increasingly urban firefighters on the front lines of Climate Change and sentinels are associated with wildfire events increasing in intensity and frequency in the state of california. So this work is extremely important for how will you be better able to protect them in the future as they do this work more. We need more studies and money. Imagine the San Francisco firefighters cancer foundation. If we dont have the money we are not even sitting here having this conversation. Better gear, more money, more studies, thank you for coming in, appreciate it. Coming up in a moment, a daring run with the bulls was badly ending for thearea man. We sit down with a woman singing the lead in festive operas, susanna up next. There are moments in life that leave a lasting impression. Like the feeling of movement as a new journey begins, or the sight of soft fur, warmed by the morning sun. You might remember new flavours, or a view that defies all expectations. These are the memories that stay with you, long after the moments have passed. Preparing for heartbreaking story, and one of the most profound american offers coming to the stage at the Leisure Center for the arts in walnut creek, the festival opera is bringing susanna to life after an innocent young woman was targeted as a dinner. Welcome the artistic director Zachary Gordon and shauna blake health singing the role for be lets talk about the story of susanna, a lot of people may not be familiar with it. One would think american opera we might think of porgy and bess and be left to wonder. How does susanna come in . Susanna is based on a biblical prophet called susan and the elders. It is reset in the mountains of tennessee around 1950 and it is easily the story of the young woman who is vastly misunderstood, i think its putting it mildly, by her village. They have made her into an outcast and that sort of perceived through the story as to how that, those forces beyond her control she provides and who she is. She is a very innocent girl, she is kind of a wild child raised by her brother out in the woods and very natural and very beautiful soul and this re ordeal as she realizes that society is wanting to put things on her that are not her. When you say innocent, would you go so far to say naove . Completely naove. I think she really doesnt understand her power as a woman. I dont think she feels like a woman, i think she feels like a little girl and she grows up real fast during the process. Truly she is marked by her physical beauty and the elders perception of that and there sort of internal struggle with fitting into this religious community and having this reaction to finding her bathing in a stream. No Running Water in villages , not sure where else she would bathe. But the feeling of why does everyone hate me can be so universal. As you sing and play and answer susanna, what are you drawing on . Im drawing on all of my own experiences. We all have had a little bully situation in our past, a problem with maybe a coworker, or moving to a new place and feeling misunderstood, being made to be an outcast in one way or another, i think well have places to draw from, from there. And then also, we are at a moment today where we really have to decide how we accept and love and visit is so much a story about a young woman who is just trying to tell people who she is and how she feels about things and who and what she is and everything is being imposed upon her from the outside. She is really, never even listened to by her own brother. If anything come away from the story is listen, listen, listen. Speaking of listening, i asked you a little favor during the break. I know its very early, just want to make a point that the singers voices are not amplified, it is you filling up the center. Dozens of musicians, can you give us the tiniest taste of what we might see on friday night . Sure. The trees on the mountain are cold and there the summer just vanished at then there like a for hearted lover just like my own who made me love him and left me alone wonderful, thank you so much i have seen everything from San Francisco opera to free opera in the park and i love it all. Can you talk a little bit about how festival opera takes the best is assessed and puts them in a production and takes it to walnut creek . Festival opera was founded about 20 years ago by a current board member, ted rice, who is a physician in walnut creek. He also founded arizona opera. Thats a great company. Yeah, he was a singer who needed a place to sing, so he built an Opera Company here we are 20 years later, festival opera is really a company that brings people together from all different places, but the beauty of being here in the bay area as we have this vast to us francisco opera this thing at la opera and it really is the east bays professional Opera Company. You have to believe that that helped out a lot. How do you feel about it now with the committee coming back to patronize your business . Its been very exciting. At the time when we went to the fires that night, me and my brothers, there was nothing to do in the morning, so we were trying to do anything we can. And the only way we could stay busy was we know what we know best, hey get the food out to people who really need it at the shelters. And more importantly, now we are seeing, community has been very supportive of our business in santa rosa, specifically this location, coffee park is right behind us. Thats the exciting factor, for us, as owners and for people who live right here in the community, build something exciting so the community can get excited like hey we can build and rebuild and rebuild. Thats the message we wanted to has been behind us to help us. And we focus on building places that are built for that specific community.
