Those two combined, the fog, the clouds, the onshore breeze. And that will keep temperatures at the coast, fairly cool. And inland areas fairly comfortable. Some of our coastal areas, along pacifica and half moon bay. Partly cloudy to sunny today. 66 in San Francisco. Low 70s in oakland. Upper 80s to low 90s for some of our hotter locations. Were fill following a story out of the north bay. Sheriffs deputies open fire on a man in bodega bay. Sheriffs deputies responded to a call that a man was assaulting people near swan drive. They found several victims who had to be rushed to the hospital. The suspect apparently stole a car and was later found on pelican loop. Authority says he then attacked sheriffs deputies, and thats when the deputy shot him. The sheriffs deputy and several victims were rushed to the hospital. We have no word on their condition. Well continue to bring as we g new this morning, between midnight and 3 00 a. M. , there were at least seven aftershocks, registering a magnitude 3 or higher, after southern californias strongest quake in 20 years. And later today, authorities will be looking into that shake alert earthquake warning system. Because it did not properly warn people in the Los Angeles Area about yesterdays magnitude 6. 4 quake in kern county. Now, the quake hit just after 10 30 yesterday morning. It was centered in ridgecrest, in the surles valley. Its about 150 miles northeast of downtown los angeles. The u. S. Geological survey says the quake happened along two seismic faults. But the wellknown San Andreas Fault was not one of them. Governor gavin newsom was there to make sure people affected by the quake get the aid and resources they need. As Monte Francis shows us now, the shaking could be felt in los angeles, even in the bay. Surveillance footage of this restaurant in ridgecrest shows the force of the quake. As the building shook, items fell off the shelf and employees ran for cover. The quake wiped out most of its inventory and causing thousands of dollars in damage. It also left a huge crack in this road in the small town of trona. Holy [ bleep ] in ridgecrest, a small town, residents are dealing with the worst. They say the shaking lasted about 30 seconds and knocked them off their feet. I couldnt get off the floor. I wasnt even sure if i could stay on my hands and knees. It was never ending. And i tried to get off the couch. He was starting for the door. And it knocked him down. And fires were reported in ridgecrest after the earthquake. Although it wasnt clear exactly what sparked the flames. At ridgecrest regional hospital, patients were evacuated as a precaution. Ultimately, about 20 patients were transferred to other facilities so engineers could inspect broken pipes at the hospital. The shaking also cut power to several local businesses. I started like feeling swaying. And i feel like, was i getting dizzy or something . But then i realized that all the boxes were swaying as well. But then all of a sudden, all of the lights turned off. The shaking was much less severe, 100 miles south in los angeles. Where one person took this footage of their swimming pool, with water swashing around. Seismologists say we have been in a quiet period in terms of earthquake in california. This type of earthquake is much more normal. On the long run, we expect earthquakes of this size. Its not even 6 1 2. The longterm average is probably once every five or 10 years somewhere in southern california. Thursdays quake was just a bit weaker than the northridge quake in 1994, which registered a 6. 6. And killed dozens of people and caused billions of dollars in damage. The difference is that quake was centered in a popular area. While this quake was centered in a remote area, far from any major city. Monte francis, ktvu, fox 2 news. All right, monty. Well, during a news conference. After that quake, city officials in ridgecrest were interrupted by a strong aftershock. Watch this. We started doing a grid search of streets. Looking for damage. Aftershock. That was an earthquake. Obviously we just had an aftershock. We want to make sure to get enough resources as we can possibly here to make sure that we take care of the communities that are going to be affected. Because weve had over 87 aftershocks of this, we dont know what is going to happen. And with that, the state of emergency allows us to seek significant and that is the now, th from the white house and members of congress. All express their concern and their willingness to help. Now, many in los angeles want to know, why the citys new shake alert Early Warning system did not send out an alert before that earthquake. We posed that question to the head of the california earthquake authority. It didnt trigger in l. A. Today because of the way the parameters were set. And this while the earthquake was strong where it happened, it was the intensity was moderate by the time it reached l. A. Earlier this year, los angeles rolled out its mobile app, shake alert l. A. Officials explained it operates on something called the modified macaulay intensity scale. That app is designed to send out a warning when the shaking reaches a magnitude 4 on that scale. Police in fairfield want your help. They want to find a missing 75yearold woman. Labenia chismore was reported just before 8 00 last night. She also goes by the name elizabeth. You see her photo. Shes about 55, weighing about 230 pounds. She uses a cane to help her walk. She was last seen leaving her home on nottingham drive. If you have any information, call fairfield police. Time is 4 08. Police in San Francisco say a suspect at an assault at a muni station was killed when he ran onto highway 280. It happened last night near the geneva avenue exit. Investigators say the suspect was running from police when he ran ona car and killed. That incident forced the closure of all northbound lanes of 280 for more than an hour. And police in san leandro seized more than a ton of illegal fireworks this week. Investigators were called to the store quest Storage Facility on davis street tuesday, by a man who saw large boxes being loaded into a van. When the police arrived, they discovered professional grade fireworks inside those boxes. Thats the kind that can be shot as high as 125 feet into the air. Two men were released while Police Continue their investigation. Fire investigators in san jose are looking for the cause of a fire that threatened a neighborhood in south san jose. The fire started in a detached garage, in the Communications Hills neighborhood yesterday afternoon. Fire crews worried the flames would spread to other buildings, but they were able to control it, then limit the damage to just that garage. Flames also burn 35 acres of grassland off macentire drive. So far, theres no word of any injuries. Fire investigators in san joaquin county, believe a fire that destroyed four homes, was arson. Firefighters in manteca say, those homes, all of them involved, were still under construction. A man who lives in the neighborhood says hes thankful firefighters could respond so quickly, after he called 911. All of this new construction. My house over here. And all of our houses. Thats first thing im thinking of. Great. What if it starts bouncing around. Crews work to make sure it did not extend down the block. You could see the fifth home was charred but not damaged. Investigators believe arson was involved because utility his not been connected to those homes yet x. Two model homes just a couple of blocks away burned to the ground late last month. Investigators determined that fire was deliberately set. But they dont know yet if the two fires may be related. It is now 4 10. Three Public Parking lots were set aside for people to legally set off safe and off sp dublin. With the risk of fire, especially in california, its nice to have a couple of places to great. Because theyre trying to give you a safe, controlled environment to do it, right . In a parking lot, to where theres not many flammables, as long as youre doing a controlled activity. They have a dumpster that is full of water. When youre done, be responsible. Pick them up and dispose of them in the water.
