Something to say about being in a small town and we are in a great one today surrounded by the beautiful Rolling Hills 20,000 strong the gateway to napa valley with phenomenal weather and a Phenomenal Community in the 707 a Little Pocket they call American Canyon alongside Everyone Welcome to American Canyon i was talking to our friend this week, my friend same way going to the grand canyon i said no we are going to American Canyon is like where is that he did not know about it. It is great to be here as we learn more about this wonderful city in the bay area. I have been here 100 times sometimes on the way up to napa and both of us are lucky we each have you older siblings and it can be hard to be in the shadow of a older sibling does everything right with all the good jobs and the good grades in the younger sibling has a hard time shining but American Canyon is shining and had been working very hard making Great Strides in their own high School Several Years ago and one of the products of American Canyon high school this a Cappella Group incredible we will share this with you and you can see a ton of people behind us at the park. The usual suspects and here for the taste of the town and also frank up here with his wonderful storytelling and trivia and a good laugh and a trip debut here for bus for us a for a bit. Lets focus on what this town is all about if you do not know already lets get to know American Canyon. On the southern end of napa it is known as the gateway to napa here and it was its you need unique wetlands and trails it has identity its own and pioneer settlers first arrive in and 1850s to work on overall road expansion and expense over today and the new plan center plan is in the work and the area known as a Napa Junction for most of the 1900s incorporated in 1992 thanks to voters and then napa county supervisor john widely considered the father of American Canyon and American Canyon is home to nearly 21,000 people and walmart is the citys biggest employer with 325 jobs the city also has a large wine bottle industry with about 75 million cases of bottled corks and every year and American Canyon also boasts several Big Community events including fourth of july parade which attracts hundreds of people every year. We have been here at the American Canyon through the morning we have seen a couple of interesting things walking by and also has seen you do not know what youre going to get. , for fireplace on this trip and also American Canyon Police Officer the Fire Department was out here with another engine great to see you and probably a few hundred people in the park behind us and reporters to show us what is going on hello. I have got to tell you American Canyon knows how to party they really brought it here there is a good two or 300 people here with a lot of young kids and about the house slide right over here and you just missed the tugofwar and American Flag draped off one of the firetrucks here in American Canyon is a bubble machine with food and the chamber is out here and a lot of the police force can i just say the police force here with the pompoms and the mascot i also have the cheerleaders from American Canyon high and angela why dont you tell us about it real quick. We are here in American Canyon here with us and very difficult response ability here checking out the taste of the town i know that right now you are at junction brewery and you had a chance to sample the wares and talk to people there. Where else can you with 9 00 it is 5 00 somewhere but we have some of the beer we make here sampled that a poor me and a little later on were going to talk to the brewmaster here and how he makes the brew and it is incredible and that we have had people showing up at 8 00 and look at these people we have here. So they showed up because they wanted to watch this live and there is music which is live and there is a whole restaurant inside so the entire staff is here and we also have a lot of stuff coming up so if youre in American Canyon and you want to stop by the brewery will stop by and say hi and were going have live music here also so little later on im going to show you what there is to eat in this town which i think youre going to like ed congratulations. What is alike here. Average i think on the high side in june is starting off 78 end of the month about 81 and it can be windy close to the bay here and it is a cooler part of the napa valley so we can have a guest coming up in about 20 minutes who is in lawyer with the area and my guess is they grow different varieties here more like a en bloc or chardonnay versus a cabbage so it is a cooler part of the napa valley because it is closer to the day. You are familiar with American Canyon. Not far from here. Amount to back on your reason what is your favorite thing to do here. It is a friendly place i had no idea you come through here but you do nothing about it i had driven up 29. Someone over on the peninsula on the south bay with your friend brian on American Canyon but if you have been here you do not know it but the weather is really nice at running cooler than if you start to go up the napa valley but i found that they have a lot of plans Going Forward i found this out early and i think there is a lot of good things happening and high school is amazing. They did not even have it open until 2010. The first time i drove by i thought it was a Junior College or something but there is a lot going on and have a lot when we talk to the mayor we will fill you in and weatherwise it is really a cool climate but it does get one but never that hot and you say friendly. Yes everyone is here. And friendly. Even the mayor wife is here bringing food. Yes very friendly well talk you in a bit. Medic i talked to as a director of the chamber of commerce a lot of people might make the mistake of overlooking American Canyon is illustrative to parker what puts American Canyon on the net for someone who wants to experience Something Different and the crushing tourists saturday. I encourage them to stop at our Welcome Center first with the first Welcome Center underway into napa and there we have visitors and guests stage adventures and we encourage them to visit our restaurants because we are featuring some today we have great food in American Canyon and had a honey farm that is also going to be featured i believe today which is really exciting to see and wetlands and nature preserves are just breathtaking. So i encourage people to get out and take a walk especially during sunset over here on the edge it is the best spot in the county i would even say that the bay area. You find it a challenge to get people here mandy . Has it been a challenge in your role . It is because we are not known yet and people do not really know what to do here. So my job primarily is to boost the region with our businesses and on the tour side of things we just launch explore and can. Com in october of last year. We are really trying to get our story out there so people can expect and know to do when they get here. I was lucky my sister got married in napa two summers ago and the entire family stayed in American Canyon and it was a little bit more reasonable and we could find it in napa and we it was so easy and accessible and we love the decision that we made together as a group so i do not know 10 years would have thought about it but right now it is perfect. I was in the perfect getting ready i was in the parking lot getting ready for the broadcast and try to sell the house and it is a beautiful home and it is a lot of growth maybe you are planning for a but one thing im curious as a parent is the education aspect in regards to this are you planning for more families to be here and with this are you planning to have more schools how many do you have right now . We have middle school and three Elementary Schools and high school which you saw in the family moved here because of those and the quality of education is one of the big attractive thing. Needmore the future. As we grow we will we have a middle school we passed with Napa Unified School district and we need to expand and the quality of education proximity to work and the amenities of this area once we discover this people come up and they want to stay here. Lets talk about the future and redevelopment plans you have for the main strip going through town and lets fast forward seven years looking expect to see . Business. A lot of business our Plan Development area meeting is more of an urban look with the future of American Canyon. And higher housing and transit and the entire length of broadway split highway 29 if you can. Which is probably going to be what we passed the last night and the last Council Meeting the packet was 1500 pages. And 1253 houses and the ruins are alive here teaching later which are going to be an event center and as a move to visit her and amenities which is cool. What is your favorite thing about the city . The people. Yes what about you . The people. It is community wheeled behind us this is us. It is phenomenal the city is one of the most diverse cities in california. You want to be the roots right . You want to make something when these kids graduate and go to school here they can say it started under jamie butler i could listen to this all they. Lets get back here for little taste here at the brewery and town. I came up to American Canyon i was looking at a place to eat because that is my tough assignment called taste of the town and i would hug with the burger they make your later in the show you what i found when i came to American Canyon and had a taste of the town. Reporter you might have seen this place on the way to napa and never gone and it is called the south kelly grill and familiar rustic red building been here for decades and once inside you can grab a stool at the counter or a seat at the table and settle and there is hot coffee and eggs and waffles and bacon and pancakes all coming up hot and fast and the busy kitchen and the locals here rave about the quality of the food and the generous portions we had an amazing kitchen and alfonso running this kitchen with a lot of pride and this establishment has been he over 60 years. And people have come here with grandparents and now they come here as grandparents. Elizabeth says the secret to running this successful business is caring about the customers we see some people every day and to and sometimes twice a day. The me tell you something. You probably should not eat pancakes every day but if you eat pancakes we should have these. Make an exception and you come in here have pancakes. Yum. Reporter you have got to get this, you have to. Local honey anyone . Raw organic honey and some of the bees making it are on display here at marshalls farm which is small and you can browse through a gift shop and seabees where they live and try some of the honey going from to the bottle here right here on site. When youre ready to try it you go to the honey house right here on the property and all kinds of local honey inside the door for you to try. Many say it house allergies and all i can say is it tastes delicious. Just down the block i also tried a french bakery attracting tourists and locals edit is the artisan and gourmet cafe and here you can get french classics like almond croissants and a french baguette and also find delicious seasonal fruit tarts and cannolis and more and if you want to have a sandwich it comes on delicious bread or a fresh croissants but in my opinion you should try the specialty creations here classically trained french chef develops himself and this is a combination of a creampuff and a croissant solving the problem of the soggy creampuff making it flaky and crunchy and with this cream pop i make it like this. When the feeling is the same and it is moist inside here and crunchy outside. And here is the macaroon with this purple ones filled here with a nod to the filipino heritage. Everything is like a french pastry and it american so you combine everything and you get this. It is so good. They make a decent burger here at junction brewery and grill and brewery and that gill and the brewery grill and paris together, it would just the smell vision you would smell this garlic and have plenty of good food here at junction brewery so you want to come by you can come by and see live music and hang out with me and later we are going to talk to the master here at the brewery. Never too early for garlic or beer thank you right about now i could use a pint in the last couple of minutes temperature getting warm and you can wait about 20 minutes with pinot noir. I love it. We were talking about this climate here in American Canyon with southern end of the napa valley joining me now is julie and you do not have a winery but you manage grapes correct . How many do you manage here in American Canyon napa . 140 acres and 700 and napa. Reporter and you sell and get most of them . Have at this. This is a cooler climate i take it you are growing more chardonnay. And merlot and specialties out here. Tell me how this is even dent dividend carneros beer different then carneros. This pulls it away so we actually stay cool but we have more than this. It is windy here does that impact you at all . It could be a wind tunnel is that a factor . It could be a wind tunnel it is a lot of management especially in the spring when it is about 6 to 10 inches the wind can come along and actually break so we had to lower the wire so we can cast it from the wire earlier in the season than what we have. A nice cool off i know the napa airport can be very cool and you are close to that right . A lot of the vines are over there. They cool off here but in the winter and spring we do not get the frost because of the warming fluent. So we dont have to have wind machines or sprinklers. As far as going the average temperature here in the summertime is about maybe 80 on the high side . Correct. Is a lowend 50s . Yes ideal for pinot noir and chardonnay are in your mind or opinion. It is great generally you want 30 and 40 degrees to butchers changing and napa keeping the asset in the grapes which is one of the reason we have such high quality. Also you have a pinot noir here do not. Yes i brought one. Do you sell a majority to moms or others is are and when you want to mention. For American Canyon the majority is to moms but also here. And jamail family wineries and basically everyone. Heavy hitters. Good wine. We can bring this and if you want this in 2004 and this is you do not really do this but you did this yourself right. Yes this is the old plant that during the earthquake in San Francisco supplied all the cement for the city and this is going to be the towncenter and they are going to use these arches and up in the hill here there is going to be a hotel. We use the wash to make whiskey so that is why we call it the morning whiskey and from there i moved in to brewing for other people as wl as other projects for many people. The beer you make here is the making of the people want to drink so part of it is youre making ipas because theyre popular what else are you making . We have pale ales and american and is something we can drink without being so high in alcohol and we try to be you know social they call them session beers and so have you notice a trend and brewing here and will people ask for when they come in . Yes American Canyon a lot of light beer something easier to drink so they can spend time and instead of having something so strong. We have been focusing on loggers and something under 6 as well as we have stronger beers from other people so when quite a few things. The dreamtime campaign was born out of a personal issue i have four daughters and also another issue with more and more not just kids and family spend a lot of time on devices and there is so much physical and emotional and social benefits to get outdoors. The bottom line is we all feel better when we spend time outside so we are here to support families and kids and encourage i want to put the screen down and spend time together outside. Youre close to napa within 20 minutes you can be out there on a good day and you have got to get past 116 and 29 and get past that and get home by 230 because it can be a real mess.
