Ri, thanks sara. A lake in we reopened for the first day of summer picnic 2 investigates brooke tells us Lake Temescal was closed because of a sewage spill, it was a latest problem not frustrated locals and forced a series of closures. Summer splashing is just starting. And at Lake Temescal we are super excited. Because its open hotspot is open for swimming, a place bill has been coming for decades. This is the best public swimming place in the area, in my book. Its beautiful. In recent years, its been close, troubles caused by algae, stormwater runoff and sewage spills. In april, vandalism caused a broken pipe to spill more than 22,000 gallons, state records show it flowed for five days from thorndale drive down to the lake. Should people be worried about going into the water . Absolutely not, we have a rigorous testing program. We take our Public Safety and Public Health very seriously. East Bay Regional Park District said it close the lake immediately and the city of oakland posted these sign, warning of the sewage spill, its an ongoing problem that has plagued lake because of the citys aging infrastructure. You actually know how many thousands of gallons of sewage has entered the lake . We do not, we do not, that is estimated by the city of oakland. Is there estimates. Last year, 2 investigates found oakland allowed 250,000 gallons of sewage to overflow onto streets and into waterways. Epa even find the city, a quarter of 1 million for letting the toxic water flow into the bay. Still, it hasnt stopped some from venturing into Lake Temescal. Some algae in here, but i am up in my knees. They love being in the water, it makes it really useful for me, just to be able to pack up the car and drive down here, have a place that feels safe, where they can come and swim and have fun. Earlier this month, high levels of e. Coli again forced the lake to close for four days. The reason for the high levels is not known. I shower thoroughly afterwards. I have had a rash or two. Still, the district test the water twice a week and says it is now safe. We have done a lot, this is a beautiful lake, this is a gem. I dont want to do a disservice by telling the people in the city of oakland patient from here, because they absolutely should. Lifeguards here, so here we go. Making regulars like mister ahearn refreshed. Oh, okay. Not bad. And, in his mind, worth the risk. Okay, its an okay day. Its an okay day in the water. In oakland, brooks arose, ktvu, fox 2 news. Upland immigration raid could have a very big impact on bay area cities. Will talk with oakland city councilman about how the rate is having a Chilling Effect on its constituents. The Trump Administration has announced plans for a raid on approximately 2000 undocumented immigrants, and it is set to begin tomorrow. That raid is going to target 10 metropolitan areas, that includes the bay area and is causing concern for many people, including people who live in oakland fruitville neighborhood, join us to talk about the impact councilmember, thank you so much for joining us. So, what are you hearing from residence there . We know oakland wasnt specifically listed, they listed San Francisco, but are you getting a lot of concerned people coming in and talking to you about this . Yes, i am here in the street right now on fruitville avenue. On sunday we have a number of volunteers that come out to help us unify the streets, and the volunteers are thomas of them just got here, some of them have been here, but its a message to those of us that a have here in oakland, and in the state, we need to get our paperwork together, its the motivation in one way, we should not be afraid, cities like oakland, we should be able to go out, register, get ever paperwork youve got to get done to establish a residency in your citizenship, take care of our family. Now, in terms of donald trump doing what hes doing, i think he is wasting his time. We are taking a look at amnesty, how do we include in our growth in this country, these are people that are working daily. They are not sitting at home waiting for a paycheck from the government or waiting for free housing, these are people that are actually working, their kids are going to school, there is no concern about absenteeism, they are in school, they want to do better. So, its an economic game for us, because they will you know, they are the task force, they do generally move the economy forward. We will be working along this line, as opposed to creating another fear tactic to scare people, so i am asking my residence, dont be afraid, come out, but most of all, get your paperwork done so you can have citizenship in this country, and we are not going back anywhere else, but staying in this country, because this is the city and the country i love. President trump did tweet this morning, i want to put the tree up and i will read it to you so you know what he said. He said, you know when people come into our country illegally, they will be deported. He writes that in all capital letters. He goes on to say to people that ice apprehend have already been ordered to be deported, this means that they have run from the law and run from the courts, these are people that were supposed to go back to their home country. They broke the law by coming into the country and now by staying. So, when youre talking about getting the paperwork ready, talking about how you are advising them to kind of get through this weekend, are you getting people who are saying yes, i fall into this category, that is why i am more concerned . But make it very clear, there are many fear tactics to scare us, to stay indoors, and not be productive. The truth of the matter said oakland is a sanctuary city, as well as the state of california. So, we are here to work with residence, with newcomers, and we have to recognize many of us have been here long before all the immigrants from germany and so forth came here. So, i am not into the fear tactic, i am into how do i create a setting where we can work with those that are already here, that have children at the high school age, college age, and make that work mark and i better remain, donald trump, it was a republican president that created an Amnesty Program to be able to grow the economy, not only employee, but establish relationships nationwide. From ronald reagan, so you know, what the mayor says is one thing, but that is what my neighbors are, and i enjoy them, i want them here. There is no need for immigration to be here in oakland. If they come, he said he has reiterated the sanctuary city policy the Oakland Police department will not be helping. And, this will not be done with the aid of the city, but again if we are specifically talking about the morning, are you telling people who are saying to you, what should we do . What are you telling them to do into the night and into tomorrow as operation moves forward, specifically . You know what im saying directly, if they are concerned, you ought to spend your day at home, getting paperwork together. What you need to get a visa . What you need to get citizenship . And as opposed to running and hiding, left our paperwork together, we have other legal entities that will help you get there, including my office, so stay strong, you know keep making this city productive, and the city council directed the Police Department, no cooperation. I see the u. S. Marshall director once a month. On other issues, so i am asking my residence, my neighbors, get your paperwork together, as opposed to running and hiding. Councilman trent 21, we appreciate your time, we know youre out there with a big enough effort this morning and helping with residence improving the neighborhood, thank you so much for your time. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Time out 8 49 am, lets head over to sara for a check of the forecast. We are expecting some clouds along the coast, really not too bad. 90 degrees is where we will expect to land in pleasanton and livermore. San jose, 80 degrees and gilroy as well. Nonview, 85 degrees. Santa cruz, 75 degrees, going to be and i stay in santa cruz today. This weekend, really consistent temperatures will be seeing highs inland, in the 90s, around the bay in the 80s, and along the coast in the 70s. Then things really cool off by midweek, take a look at these temperatures, how much it changes. So, this weekend we are seeing temperatures, highs in the 90s inland by wednesday, temperatures will drop down to the 70s. So, what the difference, and of course below average by the middle of the weekend above average for this weekend, so hopefully the beginning of the week will be pretty normal for this time of year. Lets go all right, 15yearold marina of saratoga and ruth, marina has lived with type i diabetes the last five years, her father was born in the african nation, and this young lady has set up a nonprofit to raise money and supplies for children in ethiopia, who also live with diabetes. This is 14yearold jamie of san Anselmo Thomas she is 14, she has type i diabetes as well, and is about to join a delegation of youth advocates in a trip to washington, to Lobby Congress on the importance of diabetes research, two remarkable young ladies, they join me now, good morning. Morning. What do you guys do in your spare time . I do vaulting, which is like genetics on horses. And i do hockey. I was kind of kidding, you guys are busy with all this, are you . Tell us, too young teens, what is it like to live with type i diabetes, jamie, why dont you start . It is very very annoying, i have to check my blood sugar, and i have to count every carb that i eat, and also, a few weeks ago, i had to go to the emergency room because of an accidental insulin overdose, so that was so scary for me and for my family. So, hopefully we can cure type i diabetes soon, so that we never have to deal with that again. It is very prevalent in your life, what is the day like for you . Its definitely become more of a routine since i have had it for so many years. But, there is definitely many more decisions i have to make every day from the time i wake up to when i go to sleep, im thinking about carbs in every food and how to make sure my blood sugar stays in a good range. You recently took a trip back to ethiopia, your father was born there, lived there for about 15 years before moving here. What was that like . Was your intention to go back and help young kids that have type i diabetes there . We originally went, because my dads uncle still live there. When we went, we also brought supplies to a hospital. Having seen that, we realized how much help they really need, and how much we can try to provide for them. Which is where idea for the nonprofit started. We are looking at pictures here, did you relate well . The kid mustve just loved having you there, right . Yeah, they were all very friendly, it was great to see them. A lot of them spoke english as well. Is it a big problem, a big issue, diabetes . I definitely think it is very prevalent and really affects all the families. And the friends of these people. With diabetes . Yes. I know you have the cafe exchange, which is a nonprofit, we will get to that in a moment, back to you, jamie. You are leaving in a couple of weeks, going to washington, tell us about your trip. There are a lot of people from all 50 states, five Different Countries and washington dc, going to congress and to washington dc to Tell Congress about what its like to live with type i diabetes, and why we need to treat, cure, and prevent diabetes. So, we are trying to renew the special diabetes program, that provides 150 million annually. So, i really really hope that we can renew this program, since it expires. You are going to meet with congressmen and women, what is that going to be like, in session, discuss this . I am super excited, i think that a few delegates are going to testify, and we get to talk to our congresspeople and tell them about why we need a cure, and why this is an important issue. You have taken it up a step, you opened up a nonprofit called kappa exchange, tell us what the name means and what your folks are doing. Coffee originated in ethiopia, in the coffin region. Our idea is, if you just spend five dollars trying to give to these kids, who really need it, rather than spending five dollars on your daily coffee, cumulatively it would make a really big impact, so that is where the name comes from. You have already raised over 10,000, right . Just about 10,000. Even a five dollar donation makes a big difference, right . Yes, definitely pick what would i buy . Five dollars . It would die, what we are trying to do is speculate money, what we are doing is trying to make a book that helps with diabetes awareness. But, five dollars could buy many things, it could buy new syringes, or test strips, anything like that. Anything like that, which can help. You are 14, you are 15, already doing things a lot of people dont do in their lifetime. Now you mentioned, you are in equestrian, you read horses, you got what, a black belt, Second Degree in tae kwon do . Also, you are a musician as well . Yeah, i love to play the violin. The violin . You guys are overachievers. That is very good. I think we are in pretty good hands, our world is in pretty good hands as you grow and go, good luck in washington. Good luck with the Coffee Exchange as well. And what is the website again . Go ahead and say it. Kaffa exchange. Org. Can you spell it . Kaffa exchange. Org, right . Yes,. Org. A look at your extended forecast today, like i said, its going to be a hot one today, inland, temperatures in the 90s. And, we will be in the 80s around the bay, 70s along the coast, then things will cool off just a bit to start out the work week you can see temperatures drop down just a bit, but then by midweek, look at that inland, highs in the upper 70s.
