It is new and different, this year we are celebrating the year of the dog. If you cant come say hello be sure to join us at 6 00 tomorrow evening. We all go every year and one of my favorite parts is that i get to see your families. I am going to give you a tip to save you time and money. We take heart and i thought i could run in and get some clipper cards, the discount for children it is half off and they are charging for paper tickets so i thought i would run over and get two but no. You have to bring their birth certificates. You are kidding me . Birth certificate or school id. You can to show them a the phone. So you need legitimate documentation. That is too much work to go through all of that. So i will walk over to the bart station today to get my discount cards for my children and we will use them tomorrow. Maybe take the ferry. We get home so late i am reluctant to do that with the little ones. I am driving my hummer over there. Just kidding i dont have a hummer. If you rely on bart just remember that. We will talk about the new years parade in a moment but first President Trump is once again targeting sanctuary cities. This is one day after he threatened to pull Immigration Enforcement out of the golden state. Christien kafton is in san jose with more on the comments and how local lawmakers are responding. Reporter the president making headlines on the issue of immigration. Just yesterday he made the statements of pulling ice out of california over the issue of sanctuary cities this morning though he started off with a twitter rant that says at one point in time ms13 gang members are being removed by the great Border Patrol agents by the thousands, but these killers come back in from el salvador and through mexico like water. El salvador takes our money and mexico needs to help more. We need the wall and then today the president heeding the message again speaking at cpac in maryland saying that he would put sanctuary cities on notice one more time. We are cracking down on sanctuary cities. Can you believe this . That is another one. We want cities to be sanctuaries for lawabiding americans. Not for criminals. Reporter so far i. C. E. Has not commented but the proposal of pulling agents out of california seems unlikely. The state has seen an increase in immigration sweeps and employment audits. Meanwhile the interim mayor of San Francisco has released a statement that reads if President Trump leaves threatening sanctuary cities with federal action will coerce us into betraying the trust and cooperation of immigrants he is sorely mistaken. The declaration to abdicate is more of the same from this administration. Once again choosing politics over Public Safety and californias senior senator weighing in on this, Diane Feinstein says she believes the statements were meanspirited. Back to you guys. To the question of the day, do you think pulling ice agents out of california is a good idea . 58 , 59 say yes, 41 say no. Tweets and Facebook Comments including this one from a viewer who says i think the problem is how they are operating. You dont take people who have built lives and families and get rid of them. Immigration has led to great advancements in many fields. John says good riddance to bad rubbish. We have more sophisticated ways to deal with the issue. Jenna baker says i dont agree with sanctuary status let him do his job. We will take your responses through the day and share them with you. A few moments ago Florida Governor rick scott announced the minimum wage age to purchase firearms in his state will be 21. Remember the 19yearold accused High School Shooter last week purchased the gun that he used in the attack legally and we are learning during the shooting an armed deputy who was on campus stayed outside of the building and did not enter to stop the gunman. This comes as teachers return to campus for the first time. Lets go to parkland, florida for more. Reporter s teachers and chaff staff are returning to Stoneman Douglas high school. Today they will be providing support services. Eventually we will have to move on and i have mixed emotions going back. We go from angry to sad. This comes one day after the Broward County sheriff announced the armed officer on duty at the school never went inside to engage the shooter. He has been placed under investigation. The sheriff says it is not the only disciplinary action being taken. I restricted two of our deputies while we delve further into this and make a decision if they could have done more or should have done more. The shooting and the inaction has rekindled the debate of arming Staff Members with many students and teachers rejecting the idea of guns in the classroom. You shouldnt be responsible for protecting the entire school. The idea is absolutely ridiculous. Others in Law Enforcement say that it is worth exploring. One florida county is making plans for a new Pilot Program overseen by the local sheriff. My primary responsibility in polk county is to protect life. As for the high school students, they will return for classes next wednesday, for the First Time Since fleeing this property in absolute panic and terror on valentines day. From parkland, florida phil keating ktvu fox 2 news. President trump spoke at the cpac in maryland. We brought you part of the address live at 7 00. Among other topics the president talked about the suggestion that some teachers be armed with guns to protect students. Welltrained gun adept teachers, coaches and people that work in the buildings. People that were in the marines, people in the army and navy and air force and coast guard. People that are adept with weaponry and with guns, they teach. The president says declaring schools gun free zones only puts students in more danger. The president is facing backlash from educators about his suggestion to arm teachers. Cristina rendon on has more from bay area representatives. The idea of arming educators does not sit well with the president of the oakland education association. We are not putting a gun in the hands of teachers who are there to teach and to protect. We cant expect them to fire at potentially a student. The Oakland Unified School District Police chief wants to talk about a real solution. I get pushback from the public they dont even want police in school with handguns. To arm a teacher is insane. That is a statement made by a man with no experience in this field. It is not going to happen. They believe people who advocate for Arming Teachers are doing it to sell more guns. Teachers should be armed with counselors, nurses, support personnel and they should have pencils and paper. Our job is not to solve the problem in society it is to teach. The California Teachers Association referred us to a statement by the National Education association and it says bringing more guns into schools does nothing to protect students and educators. Cristina rendon ktvu fox 2 news. During a meeting yesterday President Trump outlined several changes to current law that he would support to help prevent mass shootings. He suggested raising the age to purchasing a rifle to 21 years old and he back the ban on bump stocks the device that essentially turns a semi automatic rifle into a fully automatic weapon. The president has said he would support comprehensive background checks with an emphasis on Mental Health and he echoed this to cpac. The president says he has spoken to the nra about gun safety and as we reported yesterday the head of the nra spoke at the cpac conference and he criticized the fbi for failing to act on tips that the shooting suspect may have been planning the shooting and he lashed out against nra opponents who he says are using the tragedy to strip away the constitutional right to bear arms. They hate the nra and the second amendment. They hate individual freedom. A political Watchdog Group says the nra spent more than 30 million supporting the Trump Campaign in 2016. Professor Eric Sheckler chair of the Uc Berkeley Political Science Department says in the 70s and 80s the nra transformed from a hunting Enthusiast Club to a powerful lobbying group and he says funding comes from 40 fees for members and gun manufacturers. There is an argument that the reason the nra is so uncompromising is because of the constituency. If you look at survey data there are issues where nra members themselves would be willing to compromise or support modest gun control measures at least. During his speech the head of the nra criticized Bernie Sanders Elizabeth Warren and pamela harris. There has been speculation that though senators could be considering a run for president in 2020. Now to the story about a program in florida helping veterinarians find work by teaching them new skills. They faced battle. But today these military vets are doing combat in the kitchen. They are armed with cooking utensils and their bare hands learning how to make bread. They are even taking on new skills as part of vets to chefs the 12 Week Training Program in manatee county. It has blossomed since 2014 where we have had over 30 graduates. Just in this program. The program is part of vets to success founded by brian jacobs, a battlefield paramedic who served in the marines. We have started to see a real need from a veterans standpoint and from a industry standpoint. Veterans need great jobs and the Industry Needs great people. Jacob has had a love for cooking since childhood. He was taught by his grandfather who was a chef during world war ii. Most kids were out making mud pies but i was making roast beef. Many mornings i would discuss what are we cooking today . Jacobs hit hard time following military service and was homeless at one point but the most painful moment memorial day 2014 when his brother who is also a veteran took his own life. I remember getting the phone call and my world was flipped upside down. When my brother took his life he gave me purpose. I already had the passion for food but no purpose. Through this program jacobs is giving veterans a chance to expand Job Opportunities and he is putting them in charge of the kitchen. Ki John Esposito is leading students and he served as a chef during vietnam. I would like to put up a bakery but i was not successful because we used to get mortared and rocketed. The equipment was blown up quite a few times. He was trying to make people happy through food. I couldnt imagine what he went through. Esposito is helping students like this army veteran. Like jacobs he struggled after his service even serving time in jail. It is a big piece. He has found a new purpose now. It has allowed me to use creativity in a new way and a sense of belonging i did not have. I didnt know i was missing. No he can see opportunities in the future. Running my own kitchen. I love cooking. It is really fun. I am passionate about it and i look forward to going to work every day. Jacobs is proud of the veterans and he thinks that his brother would be proud as well. I hope he is looking down. I hope he knows we are trying to make a change. To give that support and love. That passion and belonging he was looking for. Mark wilson, fox news. Such a rewarding feeling making something with your hands and sharing it. Coming up, a rising star on the basketball court. Scott reese introduces us to a university of San Francisco superstar. And the 2 billion plan to help the homeless. We are live with one of the state senators behind the bill. Bay area state senators jim bell and Nancy Skinner are working to pass a bill that would get 2 billion to help the homeless. The money would be taken from the state Budget Surplus as a onetime investment, the mayors of californias 11 largest cities including San Francisco san jose and oakland say that they support the bill. For more we are joined live from skype with state senator bell. Are you there senator . There you are. Good morning. Good morning. Lets talk about the 2 billion. What is the plan to divvy it up . There is about 130,000 homeless in california and we think this 2 billion can make a real big difference in helping house those Homeless People that are on the streets also those living on the freeway right of ways and other places in california. The concentration in the bay area and the major cities. Lets see if we can take a minute to perhaps fix the microphone. In the meantime if you can hear me, do you think there is a lot of migration . Lets say someone falls into homelessness in San Francisco, they go to san jose is that a pattern we are concerned about statewide . I think the reasons why people are homeless vary, but we have seen this increase in homelessness due to the cost of housing. The fact that rent is going up dramatically and that creates homelessness. As well as the lack of adequate Mental Health assistance. It looks like we may have lost the state senator. We thank jim bell, if we can bring him back we will. We heard libby schaaf highlighting the work she is doing and oakland to house 2000 people but so often the big city mayors get together and put their heads together. One of the questions i have, i know the money will come from the surplus but then you heard politicians like jerry brown say that we have a surplus but the money has to be put away for a rainy day and we will need the money again. The state will go into recession and we need the money. We can just use it. Right, there are ups and downs in the economy so right now we are up. Why not go through the regular budget process to get the money is the argument instead of tapping into the surplus which is needed when there is economic downturn. And the other argument is that that money is for the taxpayers. It is supposed to go back to the taxpayers and fix the roadways so why are we using it . Why not use the normal budget process . So it will be a big day for lawmakers. Comments by President Trump that indicate the president is considering pulling federal Immigration Enforcement agents out of california. He says that california is not helping with the federal crackdown on violent gangs and he expressed frustration over the century policy for undocumented immigrants. That brings us to the question of the day. Do you think pulling i. C. E. Agents out of california is a good idea . 59 say yes and 41 say no. A lot of oneword responses, yes. Lisa says get them out. I am not finding a lot of support for keeping i. C. E. Agents but one person said yes. Thank you for talking with us. Amid calls for Tech Companies to do more to prevent children from getting addicted to technology a new study finds more and more parents think their children are already addicted. Lets bring in alex savidge to further enlighten us. Reporter what the study found is that a lot of people are not willing to admit they might be addicted to their smart phones but they are worried that their kids are unable to put down their devices. This is according to a study done by common sense media. The nonprofit surveyed thousands of mothers and fathers and what they found is 47 of parents worry that their children are addicted to their mobile devices and the parents are worried about how the screen time will impact their childrens Mental Health. We spoke with some teenagers in hayward on their way to class nearby at the high school and they admit they are hooked. Every day we are always on the phone. We dont really Pay Attention to the surroundings anymore. Cant go one day without it. Are your parents worried about you using it too much . Probably, but they dont really set limits. Reporter one of the interesting aspects of this study is that only 32 of parents admit their own addiction to technology. I spoke with one mother who is trying to limit her twoyear old sons screen time. I plan on as much outside time and less screen time because he loves to be outside. I dont want to start any bad habits. So even myself, i turn off my phone at a certain time. Reporter there is already a push to get some of the tech giants in Silicon Valley like Facebook Google and apple to work on ways to prevent children from becoming addicted to technology. Already many Online Platforms such as youtube and mobile devices have Parental Controls built in but a lot of parents might not be aware those controls exist. If you think your child may be having trouble unplugging, one suggestion is to create tech free zones inside of your home and this would be places like the dinner table, or the bedroom. It is starting at 14th and alice street downtown goes down 14 turns right on broadway and will be ending on 20th and brought every with a celebration. Most importantly there will be food. The idea came from the San Francisco pride celebration. That is when the organizer thought africanamericans needed something similar to celebrate. She is joining us live in the studio this morning. Good morning and welcome. So what specifically when you are at sf pride made you think about this . First how positive it was. As a black community there is a lot to fight against and that can be exhausting. We need to spend more time celebrating who we are and all that we have created. I think sf pride is great for the lgbtq community. So we want to have a similar celebration. When africanamerican people get together and march and their protesting, you wanted to counterbalance that. You want to march for happy reasons. Right, it is just in addition to this. We need to do these things and we need to march. There is equity that needs to be built but we also need to celebrate and recognize how far we have come and how beautiful we all are. It is really about much more than just lgbt rights. I imagine your parade is broad as well. People ask bodies black joy parade but it is not our job to tell you. We want to create a space for you to express it. Some people would be surprised by the diversity in the black community. Their people in Technology People that work for the city, kids and elderly. There are so many facets and this is to bring us all together. I know the answer to this but everyone is welcome right . Everybody. It is a space to celebrate, come do that in an authentic and true way. So we talked about celebrating progress in the community what about the future . The parade is designed past present and future, there are 57 groups signed up. The black Cowboy Association which had their own parade will be in the front and all the way down to the scraper bike kids and the youth organizations will be talking about the progress. How do you start Something Like this . You know, you wake up and you think we should have a parade so then you get your friends together and talk about what you want to call it. You can get people on board with experience. People with pride and other Community Organizations who have gathered people together. It is a big achievement but it is a testament to the black community. There was so much talent and creativity so we can do anything. Oftentimes you do it once and it is great so you do it again. I would imagine the first year is tough. People keep asking and it is stressful to think about the future but we just want to establish this and it is something that oakland will be proud to do every single year. Hopefully it will grow and grow. We are so impressed by the support so far. What about the celebration at the end . The celebration is incredible. It will be up and down franklin street. Food, arts and crafts, a skate park, black owned wineries will be there as well. There is a Healing Village for people who want to get devotions and do their prayers or massage. There will also be a poetic stage, we have 12 or 13 poets. Also there is a main stage. We will have a bunch of different acts so the celebration goes on. I hope you covered everything. I can imagine it will be a wonderful success but do you foresee other cities across the country knocking on your door asking about how this went . Actually los angeles, portland, birmingham. People have reached out and it has not even happened yet. So i think so. With the help of all the sponsors and the community i think we can do it. How does that feel . It makes me nervous and stressful but i am excited. I think it shows there is a demand for Something Like this. It is exciting to see that people come on board. All of the information you will need about this sundays black joy parade is waiting for you on ktvu. Com.
