Im looking for kids that are in some of these these plots. We tag along with Security Officers at an Oakland School who show us what they are looking for every day. The investigation into the florida massacre has only begun. Now the debate over how to stop these shootings from happening has already begun again in gun control to Mental Health, the political fight is on. And giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner is healthy again after an injury derailed him last season. Coming up well talk to mad bum about his hopes for this season. On. There are two types of people in the world. Those who fear the future. And those who embrace it. The future is for the unafraid. Tonight hundreds of people came out to pay their respects and honor the 17 people who were slaughtered at a school in florida yesterday. This is one of many vigils and Prayer Services being held there. The shock of that massacre is still fresh in the minds of the country as those directly affected by the shooting search for answers. Investigators say the gunman took an uber to school. He then shot into five classrooms before leaving the school by blending in with fleeing students. Authorities also confirmed today that the fbi had been alert about 19yearold nikolas cruz. For police departments, its a challenge to balance security with not have a security seemed like an armed camp. Ktvus rob roth joins us live from oakland where he spent much of the day with a school Police Officer there. Rob. Reporter frank and julie, Oakland Unified School district is one of the few districts to have its own police department. The hope is for officers to be able to head off serious trouble before it start. On this day after the mass slaughter of School Students in florida, officer roland lamb is setting out for oakland technical high school. Nothing in particular was going on. He just wanted to check n typically he circles the perimeter of the school first by car to look around. Im looking for kids that are in some of these hiding spots behind bushes. Reporter he goes inside to touch base with one of the school principals. Then our students were a little bit on edge. Just got to be prepared like always. Reporter then he walks the campus. You guys doing okay from the news yesterday about florida . Pretty crazy. Yeah . Happens a lot. Reporter this is part of how school Police Officers build trust on campus and perhaps learn of problems before they escalate. We get calls from principals and teachers and parents where there was a fight at school or somebody threatened somebody or somebody went up on social media and threatened somebody, we will actually go out, my officers, and talk to the kid, talk to the parents. Reporter oakland unified is the only School District in the bay area that has its own independent police department. The next closest is stockton. Lamb is one of 20 officers who patrol the middle and high schools along with 90 civilian officers. Problems in their lives might surface Little Details that might sound off some red flags. Reporter at Police Headquarters they monitor security cameras posted on all campuses. Were more embedded in the school. We have a better relationship with the teachers and counselors. We have a pulse of whats going on in the School District every day. Schools also receive training on what to do if an active shooter comes on campus. The next training happens to be tomorrow. It is an interesting question, my daughter goes to school and anybody could walk on campus. The only thing that stops them is a sign that says please sign in at the office. But do you want the school to become an armed camp where everyone has metal detectors or fences or what have you . Reporter thats right. If you have a lot of Police Officers and intimidation, the students feel like they have done something wrong. So you dont want to create that environment. So its a delicate balance. Oakland has about 90 civilian officers so they are unarmed, they are dressed in street clothes. But theyre there keeping anite out in campus so there is that. If trouble comes, then they can bring the sworn Police Officers in. Its a tough balance. Rob roth in oakland, thank you. The shooting in florida has knocked most of the other political headlines off the front page today. Politicians are spent the last 24 hours going back and forth about gun control and Mental Health policy as potential solutions to these shootings. Ktvus tom vacar is here now with a look at the debate. Reporter that debate is as old as the constitution but never been more rancorous. With the 8th School Shooting in 2018 now recorded, amongst the agony and anguish, the analysts battle over gun control has reached another high point. You hear this on the news all the time. You never think its going to happen. And it happens. [ crying ] reporter the National Shooting sports foundation, a gun industrysupported group, says that one in every five guns sold is an arstyle Assault Rifle like the one used by the florida shooter. All told, its estimated that there are now 15 million ar type assault weapons owned by americans. Thats almost 7 times the number of active and reserved uniformed personnel in the u. S. Army, navy, air force, marines and coast guard. Florida governor rick scott a long time gun advocate advocated more discussions. How do we make sure that individuals with Mental Illness do not touch a gun . We need to have a real conversation so we have Public Safety for our schools in this state. Reporter so did florida federal legislators. More details become available, well have a deeper conversation about why these things are happening. Lets have a conversation about how to deal with Mental Health issues, how to make sure that dangerous people dont get guns, how to make sure that lawabiding citizens dont have their Second Amendment rights interfered with. Reporter in a second hearing today, the secretary of the trish remember hinted at bolder action. The gun violence, its a tragedy what weve seen yesterday and i would urge congress to look at these issues. Do you propose to do something . Um, i have vast responsibilities as treasury secretary but this is out of my lane. We are here for you whatever you need, whatever we can do to ease your pain. Reporter the president spoke to america decrying the shooting but offered no practical or specific solutions especially on the thorny issue of gun laws. We are committed to working with state and local leaders to help secure our schools and tackle the difficult issue of Mental Health. Reporter former president barack obama tweeted caring for kids is our first job and until we can honestly say were doing enough to keep them safe from harm including long overdue commonsense gun safety laws that most americans want, then we have to change. Senator Dianne Feinstein a long time gun control advocate and enemy of Assault Rifles tweeted, my bill to ban assault weapons is ready for a vote. How long will we allow weapons of war being used to slaughter our children . Its crazy. All you can think about is oh, my god, my family, my friends. Reporter with between 270 and 300 million of all types of guns in the u. S. Civilians hands, and that number is rising, many wonder, is there a limit . It seems exactly along the lines of what youre saying, tom. We almost have one gun for every man, woman and child here in this country. It feels like we live in a gun society. Gun control might help. Mental Health Issues might help but it seems like theres not just that one big answer that we could do other than confiscating every, single weapon. Reporter well, its true that there are multiplicity of solutions but you can be sued for slander. We have freedom of the press. But you can be sued for libel. We have freedom of religion. You can even believe in human sacrifice. Stick a knife into somebody, we call that murder. So no right is absolute. And even in the gun arena, there are many, many things and requirements that both cities, states and even the federal government place on certain kinds of guns. So theres no reason to believe this is completely unsolvable or that everybody and anybody can have as many guns as they want. I think thats something thats very quickly going by the boards. But it will certainly take a concerted effort. People cant go into their corners. They have to come together to reach a solution. Yeah, or whats going to have to happen is one side is going to overwhelm the other by popular opinion. And do you that at the ballot box. Cant just blame it on guns. Its a violence problem, as well no question that, um, when i was a young kid, things were settled with fist cuffs. Now if you disrespect somebody or i shoot them or stab them or kill them and thats a difference things are glorified through social media and rap music. Its just hard. Tom, thank you. And we are tracking some cool weather around here. No rain though. Well let you know what to expect coming up. Madison bumgarner hoping to regain his all star form. He injured his shoulder last year when he crashed his dirt bike and had to miss a couple of months of baseball. Joe fonzi spoke about mad bum in arizona today and has more live from scottsdale with what he had to say. Joe. Reporter not a good way to go on the dl. One of the great things about spring training is its a psychological fresh start no matter what happens the previous season. The giants felt pretty good about things when they broke camp last spring. They thought they had a solid lineup and pitching staff with one of the elite starters Madison Bumgarner. Then the injuries started. Bumgarners case, it was a dirt bike accident on and off day in colorado causing him to miss three months. The team lost 98 games, the worst season in his nineyear career providing motivation for year 10. We were not that bad, you know, we had a terrible year, yeah, but we were not that bad of a team. I think if you can take that adversity and use it well all be better for it. I dont think anybody wants to go through that again, even more so now that we have actually been through it. You realize what its about. Reporter does it give you a mindset that maybe a little chip on your shoulder where maybe you dont feel that same way coming off a championship year . Yeah, for sure, i think so. Reporter bumgarner is no longer a kid. That makes for a different routine when it comes to off season workouts. Probably harder that year than before. I have always worked hard but just a little more intensity started earlier this year. Reporter bumgarner is probably the at least likely guy to fit into a current baseball trend. Starting pitchers are working fewer and fewer innings giving way to bullpen specialists. Bumgarner likes to finish what he starts. That ball is smoked reporter not to mention the fact that you would like to keep a guy who has 17 career home runs in the line up as long as possible. Anybody thats, you know, regardless of what they are told, anybody that says that they dont want to finish the game, they are lying to you or maybe they have never done it before and they dont know what its like. Im more old school. Teams are going as to do whatever they think gives them the best chance to one. Thats all you can expect. I dont think thats one way to draw that up. One team is going to win a certain way, another team is going to be better off to try to win another way, so you have to know your guys and read the situation, read the game. Reporter the good news is bruce bochy feels the same way. Sabre metrics will not be used to determine how deep into games bumgarner works. That will be decided the Old Fashioned way, the eye test and then direct communication. Thats good news because thats what bumgarners all about, guys. I like the oldfashioned way. Yeah. Joe, is he still riding the dirt bike . No. [ laughter ] he didnt even ride any horses this off season. You know . He is a horseman. He said im not getting on anything that gets me off the ground. He worked hard but no riding. It does seem like that was a whole precursor for the whole season. He injures himself and they went down him from there. Reporter it was a perfect storm. The way they broke camp. Johnny cueto had issues so theres two fits of your entire starting rotation that 2 5ths of your entire starting rotation that got injured. Buster posey with a pitch ball on opening day. Bell and panik with concussion issues. All year long something was happening and even the young guys were getting hurt that they brought up.
