Before, minutes later, cutting the losses in half. In the end it closed 1175 points lower. A drop of 4. 6 . This marked the second day of steep losses. There was a sweeping selloff on friday over fears that the Federal Reserve will accelerate Interest Rates. We are joined by Morgan Stanley Financial Advisor jordan steady. We have been on this upward trajectory for a long time now. What the heck happened today . Its like going to santa cruz and going up the big dipper. We have been at the top all of 2017 and we hit a downturn today. 1100 points, 1,200 points. It sounds like a lot. In 1987, blackmon we were down 508 points and that was a 22 drop. That would be significant. Today, 2. 5 on friday, its not even a 10 correction. What is driving the sell off . It extended from what we saw on friday . It has to do with the federal open Market Committee meeting meeting Janet Yellens last meeting. There is going to be three to four increases in the interest rate. Thats the amount of money that banks charge each other to borrow. And also what was released is that the wage increases have averaged 2. 9 . It scares the market. They are worried about inflation. Ironically, today is the first day of the new fed chief, jay powell today. Welcome to the job. We asked in our open to this broadcast, is this a blip or a trend . What do you think . A blip . Well, i think you have to separate the two things. There is the economy and the stock market. The economy is what we care about. Thats how we get paid. The economy is doing extremely well. The market is looking out into the future. When you look at tax cuts, putting more cash into the system, when you look at Interest Rates being actually pretty low right now, when you look at repatriation, money coming back from europe to the united states, it creates a lot of money. So that stimulates the the Federal Reserve to cool the economy down. Thing market is worried about higher increases, asking the fed getting ahead of their skis. Is in the result of a good economy . Its a result of a great economy. Since 2008, we have been building back. We have good fundamentals. I mean, in 2008 we had poor fundamentals. We have excellent fundamentals right now. We announced last week 88 straight months of continual job growth. I mean, europe is envious of our ability to do this. One of the criticisms is i heard that the economy is at full bore. The unemployment is the lowest in many, many years. Inflation has always been a concern, but its not really happening out there. The economy is doing great. The tax cuts are overheating the economy. Does that make sense . The tax cuts could overheat the economy along with money being incredibly cheap. Thats what the market is fearing. There is a fear factor. We are in the fear factor. We are fearing that causing fomc to raise the Interest Rates. If they do that, we are worried about the economy slowing down. Its a worry. Youve got to go back to our fundamentals. Our earnings reports. Our Quarterly Earnings reports being very good. The bond market stress is something that is weighing heavy . Right. We are worried about an inverted yield curve. That means that shortterm rate will pay off better than the longer term rate. This will work out. I know you are not a political analyst. You can take a pass on this question, but the president has been taking a lot of credit for the success on the stock markets. He hasnt said anything that i know of today about this big dump on the market. Can he take credit . If he does take credit, should he take some of the blame as well . Thats an interesting question. If you look at it, last year was a policy year. The election and implementing tax policy. We move into 2018, whats that . Its going to be a Political Year because of the midterm elections. Ill leave it up to you. Yeah. But most patients choose not to talk about what happens on wall street because it is so fickle. Exactly. As you mentioned, you cant take credit for it when its doing well and avoid the issue when its not doing well. Most president s dont touch it. Thanks. Well, just steps from burned out lots in santa rosa, the city witnessed another tragic event today. This time on surface streets at the end of the morning commute. Tom vicar live in santa rosa. One of the things that police may have do is to bring in specialized equipment so they can literally weigh that truck as it sits right there. Its possible it may have been overloaded. That would be a significant factor in this kind of accident. That will be a part of our investigation as to the braking system of the dump truck. Reporter those three serious injuries have been redescribed as critical, which is a worst situation. Fountain grove avenue opened up at 2 00 going to the and 4 00 going to the east. Okay, now to a warning about the allure of technology. How it gets us hooked. It is coming from an unlikely source. Former executives from google and facebook are now trying to bring attention to Technology Addiction and find the importance of finding balance. It is an Important Message for all of us. Here to talk more about this campaign, called the truth about tech is San Francisco bays Common Sense Media that is partnering on the new push. I know you are in washington where the initiative will launch in just a few days. You are pushing back against technology why and why now . Hi, thanks for having me. Partnering with an Organization Called center of Humane Technology and truth about Tech Campaign because we feel like it is time to raise awareness about the role that Tech Companies play in our addiction to our cell phones and specifically how that impacts children. We know that almost half of the kids are feeling addicted to their cell phones and it is causing major problems in family relationships. And, so, what we want is bring tech to the table and say that, you know, what can they do to help us solve some of these problems. And i am sure you have a few ideas. What would you like to see Companies Like google, like facebook, like instagram, what would you like to see them do . We would like to work with the Tech Companies to put some mod kaeugdzs in place that we would call our prohuman or for kids, specifically, you know, things that are less pro hibitive and optimize the good things about tech. Tech is not going away. We are not suggesting you throw your iphones out the window. We dont want to drive without seat belts anymore. Not driving without baby seats in the car. Maybe just modifications. I know that the word addiction has been thrown around as of late. Might seem bit of a strong word in the context of social media. From what i am gathering you do see it as being harmful . So, you know there is still a lot of research that needs to happen and there has been little study about scientific based addiction. What we would say about this is that this is an emotional issue that parents feel. People in the press and people out on the street are calling it digital addiction but we are yet to understand the full impact of so much tech on the brain. So, that is one of the parts of our campaign, the call for more research as it relates to tech addiction. I know that you are going to be launching this initiative on wednesday. You talked about it today. Tell me why you are in washington and what you want lawmakers to do. So, we are launching the truth about Tech Campaign here in washington, d. C. Because we feel like both policymakers and Public Health officials all need to understand what the concerns are among families about this tech use and the impact on our kids social, emotional development. So, we will be having a conference and we will be talking about what the issues are and then confirring with Public Health experts who have been studying the impact of media and technology on kids. Then we will be talking about solutions such as, you know, do the Tech Companies need to be regulated . Will they selfregulate . And really working towards ethical Design Practices that are pro human. And when you talk about regulations some view it as a ugly world. What type of regulation do you think might work and be to the benefit of kids who so many of them right now are on their phones hours and hours each day . I agree. I think you know regulation would be kind of a last step. I think what we want is to have Tech Companies to come to the table. They have the machines, they have the ai machines and they best know how technology can serve kids and how to reduce harm. We think some of the adbased models are the most the Tech Companies that are the most harmful to our kids. Think less about profit and more for kids. All right, thank you very much, appreciate it. I think we will check in with you later on this week to see how the launch goes. Absolutely. It gives people pause something to think about as they move forward with just how much time we spend on social media. Thank you very much. Thanks for having me. The super bowl commercials, which ones were hits, which ones bombed . A super bowl expert joins us live about the spots people are still talking about. It is warm out there again. Yeah, that tide ad may be the most talked about commercial from the super bowl. Features David Harbour from Stranger Things and pretends to be a bunch of other commercials but really it is just a tide commercial. I think the genius of that commercial is that every commercial that followed you thought could be a tide commercial. [ laughter ] they had everything. They did a fantastic job of staying surprising and relevant throughout the game. That is tough to do. And, you know, the casting on that was superior. David, super funny and all of the things that he did there. You know, preference for the last one ever the pharmaceutical spoof, great stuff all around. Innovative and staying relevant at different times. When you are watching another commercial and see figure there are stains on the clothing that is an effective commercial. Yes. And it is funny that the one time that americans are happy to talk about commercials is on the super bowl. So, definitely played into that. And tide has a little pr problem with this popping of the things so dont eat them, just use them. This was funny. I would of loved to see them shoot the commercial to see these two jocks do this kind of slow dance thing. How did this all work out . You know i think it is a great example of the nfl trying to be they want to be a little more friendly and human. So, this dancing super bowl celebration. You know, i dont know if i should admit it on the air but i am a sucker for anything dirty dancing that showed off a different side of the players. Eli manning making sure that everyone felt good about not being the greatest dancer in the world. Yes, he showed that. I wonder if it will help them in their play on the field. [ laughter ] now they have a special relationship that maybe they can quarterback and receiver. A deeper connection. [ laughter ] exactly. The dodge commercial fell flat and a lot of criticism using Martin Luther kings jr speech to sell a truck. Yeah. It did not work. And there is a line, you know, people want to be relevant and interesting and talked about but there are some things, i think, maybe we should stay away from. Dr. Martin luther king, important figure in the country. His words doper than advertising. Some of those things we just shouldnt. The message is inspiring. And the words are tremendous but when you get down to it they are trying to sell a truck by using that message. Something feels wrong about it. Yeah. I know they got permission to use his speech from the family. In fact i understand they even paid the family for this. Yes. And i mean like i said, they probably had the best intentions doing it but, again, if you read it, this is taken from a larger speech where dr. Martin luther king is talking about not listening to advertising in a lot of ways. So, they walked into that. Sometimes you try to be on the edge and sometimes you go over it. Yes. They will review this and figure it out for next year. Finish on a high note. Tide being the most talked about but this one was funny. Mountain dew and doritos. And a rap song. Can we listen to some of this . [music] [m to me this is my favorite. Super bowl stopper. When you are in a room full of people this is the one that everyone stops talking exactly. And you know, yes. Morgan freeman, yes. Missy elliot. You can not beat it. So, this is this is my personal favorite. You need to do this. Coming up with a campaign. Yes, sir. But somebody says lets get these two guys to do this rap thing and everyone goes great. How does that work . I wish it was that simple. You know. Great stuff like this. It seems simple. Congratulations. Quite an achievement. But, simple insight of like, maybe this this will be entertaining and relevant to the brand and the product. And then it turns into a script. Then the people and you end up with a finished product like that. It is it is the great ones make it look simple. Exactly. They do seem simple. Not simple to get there. It is not. I wish it was. The beauty of this super bowl sunday was sometimes you have a great game and not so great commercials. This year we had both. We did. Fantastic game. Great, great commercials. Entertaining few hours for everyone in the country. That is nice. All right. Thank you for stopping by. Thanks for having me. All right. Do you have a favorite commercial . Uh i made the mistake of going to a Super Bowl Party, not a mistake, great party but i dont watch the game well. You are doing that thing, socializing and i liked i like the game of thrones that is my lesson. I am better off watching it alone. I went off alone for the last quarter, fortunately. The temperature outside right now are on the warm side. You know that. Maybe records we will see in a minute here the temperatures go in for the weatherer is service. We are in a pattern, it is dormant. It will not change tomorrow or the next day or the next day or the next day or the next day. There will be subtle changes. The big pattern change. The shift that we are looking for bring rain and snow it is not happening. Not for us. I looked at a model suggesting it not happening until the 20th of february, so, you know, we will see. That is a long way to go. Look how green it is out there. It looks as springlike as spring can be. It is not spring, however, but when you look at that, yeah, it looks like april or may. That is because we had a ton of son, a ton of warmth, blossoms on the trees, buds, it is not nature is getting fooled a little bit here by the 10 and 15 degree above average temperature days. Here is the blocking pattern. You saw how cool it is. The low, that is the jet stream right here. The trough area, that is where the cool is. The ridge area that is where the warm is. The jet stroepl here, this is jet stream. The cold air to the north and the polar regions to the south and the tropics. That is the dividing line. When you are under the ridge you are warmer, top of the ridge, colder. That is what we got. This pattern, driving the jet stream it is stuck. It is not shifting. The shift it usually shifts, right . Every couple of days things move or bust loose. Last check, february 20th, next chance of rain for parts of the bay area. Look at the calendar and that is not next week. Temperatures in the 60s and the 70s. The last rain for us was january 21st. Or january 25th. Next hint, hint of rain is the 17th frpt the 20th is the first forecast of rain. 73 tomorrow, 74 in concord like today. Dont know what to tell you other than it is what is interesting to me is like this whole nature thing, i was outside i think, i was coming back from the Super Bowl Party and there is frogs out in the creek in february. That is not typical. You are hearing birds you dont normally hear, you are seeing it, it is interesting. Record temperatures multiple days in a row. Nature is having a fit. It is confused. Yes. The sun angle does not fit. And we could get a cold snap again and go back to winter that is where we are supposed to be. Once the bud comes out on the trees and freeze and you have problems.
