Weeks. Reporter they say he wasnt feeling well on christmas. At 44 years old and in good health he thought he could ride it out. Fever, feeling like the typical flu that everybody gets that lasts a couple of days. And so, you know, he was in bed with the flu. As far as he knew the fever and feeling altogether bad. Reporter his wife says she finally convinced him to see a doctor who detected pneumonia, gave him antibiotics and certainty him home. Four days later he went to the hospital. He seemed to be getting worse. He started coughing. He had a coughing fit and was turning blue. And the nurses are running in trying to intubate him. Reporter barbeau, who worked in i. T. Went into a medicallyinduced coma eight days after first feeling sick. He would never regain consciousness. He was transferred here to California Pacific Medical Center where he stayed on life support for three weeks but the damage the flu did to his lungs was too much to overcome. His family removed him from life support yesterday. They say at no time while he had the flu did he ever think it would kill him. Im in disbelief with everybody else. And then you read constantly the stories every day and it becomes more real for you. Reporter Jason Barbeau grew up in san mateo and lived in foster city with his wife and pets. He was full of life. He had a lot of friends and kept them through the years and just crazy wacky kind of guy. Reporter the family says they want people to take the flu seriously and advocate hard for their healthcare. They also say they never thought they would have Something Like this happen and they dont want to see any other family go through anything like this. Frank . It really is startling to think about it. At christmastime here he was a healthy 44yearold man with his whole life ahead of him, a beautiful wife and now last night they take him off life support and he is gone just like that. Reporter yeah, its amazing. There was no indication that anything like this would happen. He just thought he had the flu like all of us. This years flu season is especially dangerous for the young and elderly. More than 30 child deaths are blamed on the virus. According to the centers for Disease Control and prevention, this past well flurelated illnesses killed a 6yearold North Carolina girl and a 2yearold in mississippi. Just a few days ago a 12year old florida boy died. The cdc says more than 80 of children who died from the flu last year were not vaccinated. She reads in detail a neighbors frightening account of an experience that took place 8 40 p. M. Wednesday night. Its shocking. We havent met them yet. This is kind of an odd way to meet people. Reporter the young couple had only lived in the homeless than three weeks and posted their ordeal on the app next door. Still shaken, they declined to talk on camera but described how three armed men forced their way into the home, ordered the family and guests into one room, while two accomplices ransacked the house, stealing cash, wallets, laptops and jewelry. We saw all the Police Outside and my husband heard, like, some car doors slam and the tires squeal. He was putting our son to bed. Im glad that nobody was hurt. Our three suspects did have three weapons, two handguns and an assault rifle. Reporter the suspect fled in a white or lightcolored suv parked down the street. The street is a dead end which may have helped in the crime of opportunity. Deadend street is quiet, right, not a lot of activity. The need to be even maybe more alert than a busy road. The flip side is theres no easy exit. We responded to the scene very, very quickly. And our suspects were still gone before we got there. Reporter shaken neighbors like kristin wondered why this young couple were targeted. It seems strange that, you know, 20somethings, i think he is in his late 20s, would be targeted and followed. I dont i dont its its scary. It is possible they could have been in the neighborhood prior to the victims arriving home or they may have been followed home. Reporter police have gathered Surveillance Video and are looking for leads. There have been other robberies in piedmont so they offered this advice. Everybody should be aware of their surroundings. And im not saying it may or may not have changed what happened in this incident. But police be aware when youre getting out of your car whats around you, whats behind you, who is walking near you, who is driving down the street at the same time. Yesterday morning detectives were called to ar buckle about 50 miles northwest of sacramento. The Sheriffs Department today released a mugshot of the suspects in the case martin irky. A womans body was found in a freezer in an arbuckle home owned by his parents. A second body was found in a pond on the same property. The victims are identified as 38 Kimberly Taylor and 25year old jessica mazak. Law enforcement said the two women lived on the property where they were found. The preliminary hearing of the accused killers of a teenager from richmond starts on monday. The he could martinez was shot near his home. Paul chambers reports. Police say a quick thinking Good Samaritan helped them arrest a robbery suspect in hercules. Officers say about 8 45 yesterday morning, 25yearold ethan willby of richmond came up behind a woman at an atm on sycamore avenue. The suspect pushed the 59year old woman to the ground and ran off with her wallets. Thats when a woman at a nearby martial arts studio heard the victims screams and jumped into action. I chased him through the parking lot and then passed the other side of the mall. I didnt chase him down the hill. I was in socks and it was raining. And i wouldnt have been [ indiscernible ] the police were right there. Police found the suspect on the onramp to i80 and took him into custody. The woman who was attacked had scratches but otherwise is okay. Six members of the same family were indicted on murder charges in the death of a beloved Little League coach in san jose. Two brothers, a sister and three cousins are charged in the stabbing death of frank novarro. He was working in a bar in february of 2017 when a bouncer confiscated an identification belonging to one. Family members a few minutes later the family members returned to demand the identification back. Navorro was attacked and killed when he tried to defuse the situation. If convicted, prosecutors say all six people connected to the killing could face life in prison. The entire board of directors of usa gymnastics resigned following the sentencing of former olympic doctor larry nassar for the sexual abuse of patients. Reporter a judge sentencing nassar from 40 to 175 years in prison after more than 150 of nassars victims came forward to confront him. Olympics committee demands resignation from the entire board warning of decertification for anyone who does not comply on the usa gymnastics group. Trustees say they have not focused enough on the victims. Reporter a Congressional Committee also announcing it will investigate sexual abuse in organized sports including Michigan State university, the usa olympics and the usa gymnastics. In chicago, matt finn, fox news. Late today, usa gymnastics said it will comply with the u. S. Olympic Committee Order that calls for the board to resign as a result of the nassar scandal. California has spent more than 25 million over the past 3 years to settle Sexual Harassment claims. The claims were against state agencies and universities. The Sacramento Bee investigated the payouts most of them with taxpayer money. The newspaper identified 92 Sexual Harassment settlements involving 24 state agencies and 10 universities. The payouts range from 500 to 10 million. The price tag to fix the oroville dam is 870 million about a third higher than the previous estimate. A spokesman for the California Department of Water Resources says the reason for the increase has to do with added costs for debris removal, relocation of transmission lines and other work. Most of the cost is going toward the reconstruction of the dams two damaged spillways. You will recall 180,000 people were evacuated about a year ago when a hole in the emergency spillway threatened to flood the surrounding area. The work is expected to be complete by this fall. The search continues for a driver who triggered a headon crash between a chp patrol car and an innocent driver in hayward this morning. Two chp officers were trying to pull over a dark blue dodge ram pickup northbound on 880 about 4 15 a. M. The truck took off at speeds approaching 120 miles an hour. During the chase, the truck ran a red light at the a street offramp. Thats when the chp suv chasing the truck ran head on into a sedan. The two officers in the suv and the two people in the sedan received only minor injuries. San Leandro Police have arrested a man and woman in a stolen car investigation that led to a short chase and another officer involved crash. Police say about 8 a. M. They received a tracking signal from a stolen black cadillac at the west gate shopping center. Officers found a man and woman asleep inside the vehicle and when they tried to question them, the couple drove off. We searched and located the vehicle parked, occupied in the parking lot of westgate shopping center. The officers attempted to detain the two individuals that were in the car. But they started the vehicle and fled. That chase took them about a mile away to tudor court where police say the suspects turned down a culdesac, spun a uturn and came right at the pursuing officers. Witnesses in the neighborhood say they watched it all unfold. I guess he was trying elude the police. He goes down here and sees he cant get out so he turns around at the end and when he is coming back out, the police car got in front of him and forced him into that power pole and he hit that power pole. Fire flew up there on there and the lights all went out. Investigators say no one was injured. Both suspects are in custody facing charges related to the stolen car, the chase and the collision. A hearing in santa rosa today to talk about what Utility Companies can do to prevent future wildfires following the deadly north bay firestorm. The state Senate Committee hearing was attended by public lawmakers and cal fire as well as pg e. Officials say the cause of the firestorm is not known. Dashcam video shows the moment two chp officers drove into the path of those mudslides in montecito earlier this month. On the morning that the mudslides hit, watch what happened, the chp says two officers were responding to a fire report when they were surprised by a wave of mud, water and debris. The flow of mud and water was so strong it lifted up their patrol car and spun it around. The officers were able to regain control of their car and drive to safety. It is going to be a big weekend for ski resorts and other sierra businesses after a slow start to the season. A week of snowfall has turned things around with more resorts opening more lifts and terrain. A cold front on wednesday dumps several inches of snow in the mountains. Folks heading up have had some fun in the fresh powder so far and they should be prepared if youre going up there this weekend for big crowds and dangerous driving conditions. Patients at a small hospital in south korea were trapped by a fastmoving fire. 37 people were killed, many of the victims had no warning about the fire because the building didnt have smoke detectors. Greg palkot reports. Dozens are dead and more than 100 injured after a fire broke at a hospital in miryang friday. The flames engulfed the first floor before the firefighters arrived. We stopped the fire spreading from the first floor to the second floor during the initial phase. In this respect we also prevented the fire spreading to the second to fifth floors. Reporter all the dead were from the hospitals general ward, while elderly patients from the nursing ward were safely evacuated. The building didnt have sprinklers, which the hospital director says are not required by law. An investigation was ordered. President moon said the government should prioritize by taking measures to rescue victims. Reporter medical Officials Say ten of the victims are in Critical Condition which suggests the death toll could increase. Hospital operations are suspended as a result of the blaze and the citys mayor offered his apologies and condolences to the victims.
