Warmer over the weekend but cold this morning after yesterdays thunderstorms and hail. The storm totals were not really that heavy. Most were about 1 3 up to 1 4 inch. 44 and clear skies in daly city. The rain total is. 41 inches. Pacifica had 2 3. Dylan beach had over one inch and so did montecito, brentwood and saratoga good rain. About 1 2 across the area. There could be a little frost but they think the dew points are too high. Tomorrow there will be critical minimums so when we get the dry air but around the bay we have upper 30s with the rain just about done unless you are to the north and if you are youre dealing with cloud coverage and light rain from mendocino into lake county. 32 in napa, 30s in fairfield we have a lot of upper 30s including fremont. A lot of 30s on the peninsula as well with woodside at 36 and foster city and fremont at 39. Montero is a cool 42. Here is the cloud coverage moving through the mendocino coast. Some of that will sneak to the north but south of the golden gate partly sunny. Today we have a lot of 50s but warmer. 7 03. How is the traffic . It has been a little better than yesterday and the day before. Hopefully we will get that friday light traffic. The carquinez bridge is looking good and i would say 22 minutes between the carquinez bridge and the macarthur maze but when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza it is night not like. Backed up for 15 minutes, however this could start improving around 8 00. This is a look at interstate 880 where traffic is moving well. On the east may vape i am encouraged by what i see, not a lot of slow traffic. I do have some traffic on highway 4 over the willow pass into concord. A developing story from the past hour. Highway patrol is looking for a driver which led to a head on collision between a chp vehicle and another. This happened in hayward near the offramp for hay street. Christien kafton is at the scene to explain who investigators are looking for. Reporter i checked with chp and they said they are looking for the truck and the suspect in this case. We have a new description of the truck. Lets show you the graphic. They are looking for a dark blue dodge ram single cab pickup truck with yellow paper plates that read the following. The investigators tell us they are looking for the driver and say their actions led to this headon collision. It all started when chp officers spotted a pickup truck speeding northbound on 880 with the paper plates. The drama was captured as crews try to pull up pullover the pickup truck and then it took off with speeds approaching 120 Miles Per Hour. At that point officers were in pursuit following the truck until it sped off the freeway at the offramp here in hayward. The truck then sped to the intersection through a red light. The suv approached the intersection and then proceeded to the intersection. That is when the chp vehicle collided with a sedan. At that point they were forced to stop fortunately the officers and the people in the sedan received only minor injuries. They were taken to the hospital but the suspect in the vehicle sped away and got back to i880 northbound. We asked if they were able to capture the suspect vehicle on camera but at this point they are looking into it. We will give one more quick description of the vehicle, they are looking for a dark blue dodge ram single cab with yellow paper plates that read dgdg. Com. Coming back to the live picture, the good news for the commuters is that the astreet ramps have been cleared so there should be no impact on the morning commute. This is the latest in a series of recent crashes involving chp. One officer was killed when a suspected drunk driver slammed into his patrol car Christmas Eve on 880. President trump is in switzerland for the World Economic forum but he has come out swinging against this report in the New York Times. President trump working the crowd but stopping to offer a brief retort to the allegation that he tried to fire Robert Mueller. It is fake news folks. Fox news confirmed trump wanted to fire mueller last year. Robert mueller is investigating allegations of collusion with russia and possible obstruction of justice. They say the president s lawyer refused to do it. It is a big bombshell. Democrats piled on. He cant fire someone legitimately who is investigating him. It is fundamentally wrong. Trump thought Robert Mueller had conflicts of interest. Among them disputed fees at the Trump Golf Club in virginia but the white house points out trump listened to his age. It shows you everybody should listen to their lawyers. The advice was very sound. The white house put out a statement declined to comment out of respect for the office of the special counsel. Russian agents created 129 events on the social Media Network of facebook during the 2016 campaign according to a statement from facebook to the Senate Intelligence committee. More than 300,000 accounts viewed the events and 60,000 marked they would attend. Event pages show at least some of them were political rallies centered on divisive subjects such as immigration. Russia has denied accusations that they try to influence the election. A man suspected of robbing a woman using an atm is now in jail. This is after another woman witnessed the attack. 25yearold Ethan Willoughby of richmond jumped a woman from behind yesterday morning at the bank of america on sycamore avenue. The thief pushed the woman to the ground and ran off with her wallet. A woman nearby heard the victim screaming and jumped into action. I chased him to the parking lot and passed the other side of the mall. I did not chase him down the hall hill because i was in socks and it was raining. The police were right there. Lieutenant governor gavin newsom is expected to get a big endorsement in the race for california governor. Former arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford and her husband retired astronaut mark kelly are putting support behind gavin newsom. The announcement will be made later this morning in los angeles. Six candidates hoping to replace governor jerry brown in a forum at ucla. Gavin newsom along with the la mayor are considered the top democratic contenders in the race. Other democrats are also running state treasurer john chung and superintendent elaine easton. John cox and Orange County assemblyman travis allen are also working to run. Yesterday they debated a range of issues including immigration, a portable and universal healthcare. We delivered on the promise of universal healthcare regardless of pre existing condition. We dont need walls we need bridges. I have been fighting for immigrants. We will secure borders and make sure california enforces federal Immigration Law and we will make sure we will never be a sanctuary state. The open primary means the candidates with the most votes on june 5 will win a spot on the upcoming november ballot. The Current Governor jerry brown delivering his 16th and last state of the state address yesterday in sacramento. The spirit of democracy never dies. It is alive in this chamber and in the hearts of californians. Spoke during the address brown took time to reflect on how the state has changed since 1975 in his first term. He highlighted several accomplishments including the passage of pension reform and Workers Compensation. The governor vowed to do everything in his power to defeat any repeal of the gas tax. Hundreds of schools are trying to come up with ways to keep children off of their cell phones during school. Many schools say they have a solution cured including san lorenzo. Traffic on 580 looks good from dublin to livermore and to castro valley. On the south bay we have some slowing so there is somewhat lighter conditions for the Silicon Valley commute. We need more dry air to come in but theres too much fog with the dew points looking to high. We have had some 30s with inland areas near freezing but there is too much fog. There will likely be some still as it is hard to get rid of it this time of year. Some of the cloud coverage will work in to mendocino and lake county but that looks to be the line with clouds moving over. 39 santa rosa with fog, there is 32 at napa. The trend is for dry it could be 7 to 10 days of dry weather. We look to get warmer not today or saturday but sunday into monday. I have seen near 70 degree readings for sunday near san jose. It will be warmer. 50s today and then to the south mid to upper 60s. The rain is done for now in this pattern but we will have cold mornings with warmer days coming. Going up to 1000 for employees who have been with home depot for more than 20 years. A new report says more teenagers are taking part in the tide pod challenge. It is a dangerous trend on social media where teenagers post videos on themselves putting laundry detergent in their mouths. Poison control center says 39 teenagers were treated for exposure in the first two weeks of this month. After issuing a warning they say the numbers actually went up to 86 cases. A federal investigation into ford explores is underway after some drivers and passengers reported feeling sick after riding in the suvs. 1300 owners have reported issues including feeling dizzy or nauseous. The models are from 2011 to 2017. Ford has not found problems with the suvs that could explain the issues. It is foggy with traffic looking okay. San mateo bridge looks okay driving to the highrise with no major problems driving to the san mateo bridge. If youre driving from oakland and san leandro you will have some slow traffic as well as lower traffic in the south bay, but today in the Silicon Valley we have a lighter than usual commute. Back to the desk. Parking at bart stations is a hassle for many commuters. Now bart is looking to ease the parking crunch and it could cost you more. Leigh martinez live from the pittsburgh bay pointe station at one of the systems busiest parking lots. Reporter people are sleeping in their cars. Quite a few people are sleeping in their cars. It makes me feel bad. Apparently they dont have to be at work this early but they have to be at the station to secure a parking spot. That is how bad the parking is. That is how much it clicks up. At the Board Meeting thursday morning officials are considering adjusting how much you pay to park depending on the time you show up to the station. For the morning commuters this could mean paying more and when the demand is lower like fridays or summer months prices could be lower. Several commuters say that they would not mind paying more if it guaranteed them a spot. Mario says some days he has to park outside the lot. I get on the freeway and go to the parking garage and wait for the buses. Reporter mario works an overnight shift so he was observing the interview from the car after he left another viewer came. I sat here for about one hour. It is getting worse now that they have the new Electronic System so the people that were coming back home early in the morning are parking out there now. So it is really hard to get a spot. Reporter another option bart is looking into license plate readers to find out who is actually paying to park and who is getting around it. We spoke to one man off camera who admitted he has spent the last six months not paying to park here but the reason why is because his car was broken into so he feels he does not owe them anything. It is a very tight situation trying to park. It really is. We talk about people arriving hours early and then sleeping in the car and going to the station that is potentially dangerous. Reporter exactly. Trying to get a parking spot and then having to wait, it is tough for a lot of people. A lot of people live further away and they dont have other transportation. Okay, it is a rich discussion. Thank you. The San Francisco da office says the majority of auto break ins in San Francisco are going unsolved. The da Office Release numbers yesterday as San Francisco battles an epidemic of break ins. Between 2011 and 2017 police made only 13 arrests and 81,000 online reports of auto break ins. Last year alone there were more than 30,000 reported auto burglaries in the city. That is a 24 increase over 2016. Police are investigating a case of swatting and novato, that is when someone calls authorities to report a fake crime at someone elses house to get the swat team to respond. Marin county investigators say that someone in North Carolina called into report a shooting at a home in a neighborhood in novato. The color sounded young but police could not take any chances so they set up a perimeter and took positions. The family was not home at the time. They later learned about the fake phone call. He said the parents had been arguing and the father took the mother out the back and he heard a gunshot and came back without the mother and the gun was missing from the cabinet. Police were able to reach the family and confirmed the call was intact fake. The homeowner is a newspaper and magazine illustrator. He says he believes he was the target of the incident because of artwork that accompanied a New York Times editorial about President Trump. More details on President Trumps proposed immigration plan which includes a path to citizenship for 1. 8 million young immigrants brought to the us as children including daca recipients. In exchange it would add 25 billion for Border Security. It would also tighten up restrictions on immigration. It has been criticized by democrats and some republicans. Every time the president moves forward on one thing his staff pulls him back. It is only a piece of the puzzle so everybody will be focusing on what they like the most not on the other components. The white house says more details about the plan will be released on monday. There is new fallout from the sexual abuse case involving a former usa gymnastics doctor. The head of the oh Us Olympic Committee is demanding resignations from the entire usa gymnastics board by wednesday. Board members are being threatened with termination and decertification. The demands come two days after former gymnastics doctor larry nassar was sentenced for up to 175 years in prison for the sexual abuse of young girls. Many of the victims including aly raisman spoke during the sentencing criticizing the Olympic Committee and the board for not doing enough to protect girls and women from the abuse. Actor Casey Affleck will not be attending the academy awards. Criticism against the actor was reignited after the Metoo Movement over Sexual Harassment lawsuits filed against him in 2010. He won an oscar last year and was expected to present the oscar for best actress this year. A wounded mother from the Las Vegas Shooting in october is back home. The 30yearold was discharged from a special medical facility in phoenix this week. She was moved from the las vegas facility late last year and has been under care for months. At first doctors thought she would not survive, her husband considered removing her from life support. My kids and my family, i will not quit on them and i will not quit on myself. Jovanna calzadillas needs months of recuperation and therapy. 58 people were killed in that shooting, more than 500 others were injured before the gunman killed himself. In pennsylvania three High School Students have been accused of an attack against a classmate. The teenage girls knew that their classmate was allergic to pineapples so one of the students soaked her hand in Pineapple Juice and started giving high fives in the cafeteria. Fortunately another student heard the suspect talk about what happened and told the victim. She started showing signs of going into shock and she had an epipen shot. The fire started in the emergency room and spread throughout the building. The death toll could climb higher as there are 79 people injured. Eight of them in Critical Condition. The hospital has a nursing home and there were 200 people in the building when the fire started. There was a delay in getting patients out of the intensive care unit as they had to wait for medical staff to supervise the process. A hearing in santa rosa to discuss best practices for utilities. The hearing will be held by state senator jerry hill who is the chair of the subcommittee on gas electric and transportation safety. Three years ago he conducted a hearing on wildfires caused by power lines and says some progress has been made but the recent wildfires have raised questions about what Utility Companies have learned. When you get to the 880 in oakland the commute is looking okay. At the bay bridge toll plaza it is backed up for 10 to 15 minutes. Lets bring in Steve Paulson with our forecast. It is dry but very foggy for many. Maybe a little frost for some. Pretty cold temperatures but the fog is the bigger story. Look at this, fog enrichment. One of the many locations with fog. In 1962 three inmates tricked the guards into thinking they were sleeping in their bunks and they got off the island. We are learning that a letter was sent to the San Francisco Police Department in 2013 claiming to be from one of the men that says all three survived. The author of the letter says he has cancer and would be willing to step forward and serve one year in jail in exchange for medical care. He says in the letter the other two men have passed away. A woman who was living on alcatraz at the time, the daughter of the warden says she does not believe the letter is real. They could not have survived on the outside under their real names. He does not offer any aliases or tell us when they died or where they died. Theres nothing to follow up on. The Us Marshals Service compared to handwriting samples and concluded there were no leads from the new letter. Teachers in san jose who cannot afford to own homes in the district where they work are getting a helping hand. A couple dozen teachers attended a meeting in san jose last night, it was a coalition of eight districts. Many teachers say they cannot afford the cost of high ownership. Last night there was a program developed for educators to help with the down payment. We provide 10 to the cost of the home they want to purchase. Developing stories from this morning, Highway Patrol looking for a driver who caused a head on collision between a chp vehicle and car in hayward. Reporter i just texted chp looking for updates to see if they have any more information on the vehicle. At this point there are no new updates but we have a description of the vehicle that chp are looking for in connection with this. They need the dark blue dodge ram single cab pickup truck with yellow paper plates that read dgdg. Com. Investigators tell us they are looking for the driver. Their actions led to the head on collision. It all started when a pair of officers spotted the pickup Truck Driving this morning speeding up northbound on 880 with paper plates. Ache camera captured the drama as crews were trying to pull over the pickup truck and that is when it took off approaching 120 Miles Per Hour. Do you have the plates . Negative, we are approaching the thruway at 20 Miles Per Hour with light traffic. They have paper plates. Reporter again chp were in pursuit at that point and activated their lights and sirens following the truck until it sped off. The truck then went through the intersection blowing through a red light. The suv approached the intersection with lights and sirens on proceeded to the intersection and that is when the vehicle collided headon with the sedan. At that point officers were forced to stop. Fortunately the officers in the suv and the people in the sedan suffered minor injuries only. The suspect vehicle sped away got back onto i80 northbound. We have asked chp if they have any video of the suspect or the suspect vehicle and they say they were still looking into that. Coming back to the live picture , the impact on the commute, fortunately it has been minimal. The vehicles were cleared by around 5 00 or so this morning. Fortunately there was minimal impact, but keep in mind just how fast the vehicles were going. 120 Miles Per Hour it sounds like a dangerous situation so again at this point investigators are looking for the suspect and the vehicle. We have one to two fires a day and when you respond together and you put your lives on the line, you do have to surround yourself with experts. And for us the expert in gas and electric is pg e. We run about 2,500 2,800 fire calls a year and on almost every one of those calls pg e is responding to that call as well. And so when we show up to a fire and pg e shows up with us it makes a tremendous team during a moment of crisis. I rely on them, the firefighters in this department rely on them, and so we have to practice safety everyday. Utilizing pg es talent and expertise in that area trains our firefighters on the gas or electric aspect of a fire and when we have an emergency situation we are going to be much more skilled and prepared to mitigate that emergency for all concerned. Now they are looking to ease the parking crunch and it could end up costing you more money. Reporter we met a man who moved across the street from the bart station because he did not want to have to drive here. Friday is supposed to be a light commute but if you look at the parking lots we have reserve spots closer to us and across the way are the open spots. It looks pretty full. We came here early in the morning and people were coming at 4 00 to be at work at 10 00 because they wanted to secure a parking spot. All the way to the back everything was full. It appears the further east the harder it is to get a spot. That is because people dont live close enough to walk or take the Public Transportation in the east bay. I have to get up at 4 00 and be here by 4 30. I have to be to work at 8 00. Reporter at the Board Meeting thursday morning officials are considering adjusting how much you pay to park depending on the time you show up. For the morning commuters this could mean paying more and when the demand is lower like on fridays or summer months prices may be lower. There are some people who already pay more. 105 per month for a reserved spot but good luck getting one of those. The customer access manager says the waitlist for monthly permits are in the thousands at every station. It has cut down on my stress levels considerably. I am happy to have it. I dont mind paying. I know someone who has been on the waitlist for eight or nine months. Bart is looking into using license plate readers so they can tell who is paying and who is just skirting around. We spoke with one man who admitted to us he has been coming to park for six months straight and not paying because his car has been broken into a couple of times so he feels he is paying for nothing. The parking is a huge crunch. Some people are willing to pay more if they are secured a parking spot and others think more money wont fix the problem as they need more parking garages and space. Leigh martinez, thank you. The District Attorneys Office in San Francisco says the majority of auto breakins are going unsolved. Numbers were released yesterday as San Francisco battles break ins. Police received 81,000 online reports of auto breakins in the last year and made only 13 arrests. Last year there were more than 30,000 reported auto burglaries in the city a 24 increase. Details on President Trumps proposed immigration plan which includes a path to citizenship for 1. 8 million young immigrants brought to the United States as children. In exchange it would add 25 billion to Border Security including the proposed border wall with mexico. It would tie in up restrictions on Legal Immigration and it would end the visa lottery program. Dozens of protesters at the ice office in the financial district in downtown San Francisco. Demonstrators oppose the recent raids at the 7eleven Stores Across the country and they say even though they are american citizens they always make sure to have id with them when they leave home. I am looking at people sideways as this puts a lot of trauma and angst with hyper awareness. It was not like that before. A spokesman for ice issued a statement that says it wants people to voice their opinion without interference and Homeland Security remains committed to enforcement of immigration. Another protest is planned today for noon followed by another demonstration on monday. Police are investigating a case of swatting when someone calls authorities to report a fake crime at somebody elses home. It creates a potentially dangerous situation when the swat team responds. Someone in North Carolina called to report a shooting in a neighborhood in novato. Even though the color sounded young and was from out of state police cannot take chances. They set up a perimeter and took their positions. The family was not home at the time and they later learned about the fake phone call. It said the father had taken the mother out the backyard and he heard a gunshot and came back without the mother. Police were able to reach the family and confirm the call was a hoax. The homeowner is a newspaper illustrator. He was the target he thinks because of artwork that accompanied a New York Times editorial about President Trump. An offduty bay area firefighter took one wrong turn in oakland and it almost cost him his life. As Paul Chambers tells us the vehicle was hit by gunfire two dozen times. I felt the whole car shaking. This officer was talking on his cell phone when he took the wrong turn and later pulled over near 102nd avenue in east oakland. He then turned off his car and felt he was under attack. I did not think i would make it out. The car was shaking. Ive never felt that in my life. The car was shot at 30 times and hit 18 times. I heard so many rounds going off and i thought it was relentless. Bullet holes can be seen from every angle. He believes the bullet that shattered the back window traveled through the car and hit the front window. Luckily he was laying down and when the gunfire stopped he made a run for it. I saw him and he was either reloading or doing something but he was not running away so i thought the second round was coming. That is when he drove the car to one mile away. First responders treated him for a bullet graze. People in the area say this is a relatively quiet neighborhood and this shooting comes as a shock. They say this type of crime is misinterpreted and not a fair representation. It is not indicative of what happened last night. I have had friends and a girlfriend living here for two years and never really had any problems before. Oakland police have not released any information about leads are possible suspects.
