Most of the damage was at the paper house and Hardware Store and two neighboring businesses and several fire crews the buildings are so close together. Besides the Hardware Store theres a beauty salon, a Newspaper Office in those damaged buildings and theres several homes and buildings nearby. One man said he was worried the fire could spread to the building where he lives. There was ambers coming off the fire from there and we were concerned that it was going to that the wind was going to bring it over to our roof. So yeah, yeah, theres definitely theres a concern when theres a fire and you can look into it. That man says hes lived in that neighborhood for more than 20 years and this is the 5th time theres been a fire in the surrounding blocks. After controversy and debate, San Francisco has a new interim mayor this morning. The board of supervisors appointed mark farrell to the position of caretaker mayor until the june election. Ktvu Jana Katsuyama reports the boards vote is being criticized by supporters of former acting mayor breed. My focus and my job as mayor is to represent everybody in the city of San Francisco. No matter what their race, ethnicity, religion, my job is to represent everybody and ill do that reporter supervisor farrell was sworn in after a tense meeting. The board of supervisors voted 63 replacing acting mayor breed. The committee of the whole selected supervisor farrell to be the successor mayor. Backers of breed were outraged when the final vote was announced. [yelling] the vote came after more than 3 hours of public comment. The line of people stretched out the door into the hallway. Under city charter, board president breed had become acting mayor in december when mayor lee suddenly passed away. Passionate and political, people spoke out. Some said they were supporting breed continuing in the duel role pointing to her as a San Francisco native and a black woman with heart and strength. The acting mayor needs to continue as the acting mayor. She has chemistry and enables her to relate to all peoples of all persuasions and the gay and the straight, black and white, the brown. Critics said it was a conflict of interest and unfair for breed to be board president , District Supervisor and a its about being loyal to principle, not people. Supervisors had a contentious debate before voting. You dont walk around with a chip on your shoulder, you dont hold grudges, you keep moving and get the work done. Supervisor breed remains the boards president and as you heard, she said she plans to move forward and move beyond this divisive vote. District 2 remains open and theres no word yet on who might replace him. In San Francisco, Jana Katsuyama, ktvu fox 2 news. The santa clara board of supervisors is moving ahead with a plan for new oversight at its county jail. Supervisors would like to create an independent office to watch over daytoday operations at the jail in the Sheriffs Office and report directly to the board of supervisors. There would be a Citizens Advisory Committee to look into complaints as well as make recommendations and the board is asking county staff to write up the ordinance that would create the monitors. Once the ordinance is approved, the board wants to start the search process for people to carry out the work. San leandro city manager has been placed on leave. The San Leandro City Council voted unanimously to place chris zapata on leave with reports that he harassed the ceo of the family she accused him of making repeated romantic advances while helping her secure funding for her organization which provide services to the working poor. Zapata denied wrong doing. California lawmakers are working on new protections related to Sexual Harassment in the work place. One measure would change the civil rights law to provide protections for entrepreneurs and the bill covers people who work directly together. They say Women Entrepreneurs are vulnerable to harassment. This is primarily a gender issue. The imbalance of power, men in positions of power where they try to use that power to extract sexual favors from women who frankly arent interested or dont want to be compromised in that fashion. That measure cleared the senate. And now advances to a vote in the assembly. Santa clara county voters will decide whether or not to remove judge persky from the bench. Voters announced that supporters of a recall persky drew wide spread criticism after sentencing former stanford student turner six months to jail for his conviction for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman outside of a frat party in 2015. Critics say the sentence was too lenient, but persky said he followed the recommendations of probation officers. Coming up next, a vote to ban the sale of fur in San Francisco. No criminal charges will be filed against a driver who hit and killed a 70yearold woman in a berkeley crosswalk earlier this month and chp says daryl did not stop for she was walking at tanning way and brand was driving 15 milesanhour when he hit rightout, but investigators do not believe he was driving recklessly. Off camera, witnesses telling ktvu they saw a woman and man arguing and heard four to six gunshots and police are saying the shooter was a man. San Francisco Police are also hoping their Surveillance Video leading up to a horrifying incident in the mission district. A woman discovered a man who was on fire yesterday morning. The Woman Told Police she ran to a nearby coffee shop to have someone call police while she tried to put out the fire. The man was taken to the hospital and was last reported in critical condition. A woman who owns a bakery nearby says Homeless People frequently stay in that alley. A lot of homeless stay they use my place all the time, but some people get really upset if they see him blocking their space. Police say they do not know if the man is a transient and they have not identified him. Theyre hoping someone will come forward with more information into what happened. Time now is 5 35. Theres an effort right now to fix a state law that may make it easier to prosecute burglars who smash car windows. Car breaks ins have become an epidemic in San Francisco. The number of breakins up 26 compared to the year before. Prosecutors have to prove only that a window was broken, but that the door of that car was locked before the burglar actually broke into the car. Were proposing to change the penal code so you can prove auto burglary by showing the car was locked or by showing that there was forced entry such as breaking the glass. Its common sense. State senator wiener says he hopes the measure will be approved by state and by the governors desk by september. A campaign to repeal californias recent gas tax is closer to reality. Opponents say theyve gathered more than 2 3 the signatures needed to place repeal measure on the November Ballot and the proposition backed by john cox is the only gas tax repeal measure that can qualify. Another effort was dropped after it became tied up in court. Backers have to submit 600,000 voter signatures by may to qualify for that November Ballot. People gathered for a Prayer Service in southwest kentucky. They prayed for the two students killed and the 17 others who were wounded. A 15yearold boy is now in custody.
