Police called this group, the lucky lotto bandits. They would still scratch off lottery tickets and cash and cigarettes from convenience stores. They are suspected of more than 30 burglaries over Northern California. Along with these five men, police are looking for one more included in the pictures you see here. A scary rescue at mavericks near pillar point. Two men were stuck in the middle of huge waves when their boat capsized. A documentary filmmaker was shooting video of the surfers from a cliff a halfmile away. They say the waves were up to 60 feet high. The men in the boat were pulled out of the water by rescue crews. Luckily, they were not hurt. They were able to recover the two people on board very quickly and they were very lucky. The individuals were not wearing life jackets. Officials say the rescue took place near the spot at the annual mavericks surf competition. The men that were watching surfers. They are warning that mavericks is not a good place for beginners to be. Employees at a restaurant and oakland threatened to quit their jobs this weekend if the owner does not separate himself completely from the company. The uc ali enter Fraternal Society the ucla Intrafraternity Council passed the band earlier this week. The indefinite ban comes days after a 21yearold former fraternity president was arrested on suspicion of assault with intent to commit rape. The council did not say the move was connected to the arrest but on wednesday they said their goal is to make sure there is safety and wellbeing of people at fraternity events. At ucla the Campus Police Department Said reports of Sexual Assaults have gone up during the last academic year. The embattled Alum Rock School board held a contentious meeting last night. They talked about questionable Business Decisions and the possible mismanagement of bond money. Jesse gary has more. The parents and students deserve more respect. Hundreds of parents and Community Members protest what they call a race for profits and cozy business arrangements which take priority over the Educational Needs of children. We are troubled by the failure of certain Board Members. Reporter two Board Members were noshows and avoided the spectacle. Specifically demonstrators are angry over contracts signed last year with a Southern California based, del terra, to build bathrooms in heating and cooling systems. Bond money from measures i nj fund the projects but many claim the district has been fleeced. We think they are unworthy and we think theyve been stealing money from the district. Reporter the securities and exchange commission, the county d. A. And the County School board are investigating del terra. The alum rock board president says there were red flags dating back to last october. It was voted on and approved by the board. We had to come back in november and bring back and bring forward a contract that we could see. Reporter officials with del terra declined a request for an interview and instead provided a statement that says in part alum rock has had challenges with continuity and accountability in its Business Office. And turnover in the Business Office has made it extremely difficult to establish consistent systems and protocols for contractors doin business with the district. One board member under fire for support of del terra says that the current conflict has more to do with politics than criminal behavior. Had there been alleged fraud it wouldve been easy to see. It would have come to a conclusion by now. But the fact that its not, since i do criminal investigations myself, tells me that there is, perhaps, more smoke than fire. Next tuesday, a 22yearold army private from San Francisco will be buried with full military honors almost 70 years after he went missing and battle during the korean war. The family of Army Private First class james j. Leonard jr. Finally received confirmation his remains and his belongings have been found by a construction crew last spring in a village in south korea. He was killed in a battle within five days of arriving in south korea in july 1950. He attended Polytechnic High School in San Francisco where he ran track. He also played the trumpet. Cte is a brain disease just like alzheimers, commonly associated with injuries to former football players. The study involved researchers at Boston University and examined the brains of four deceased high school athletes. The scientists found changes to the brain as soon as 24 hours after an injury. They say this explains why in past studies about 20 of the brains that had cte came from those who never had a concussion. Depression, suicidal thoughts and shortterm memory loss are linked to cte. A new study shows that scientists may be getting close to a blood test that can detect cancer. Researcher say theyve taken a step toward developing a test that could detect eight common cancers. The report was published in the journal of science and claims the tests may be able to spot early stage cancers before the symptoms appear. Scientists hope the test will be used in routine screening programs eventually, increasing the number of patients who get early treatment. Safety questions are being raised about the new smart train in the north bay after an incident involving a child. A fiveyearold girl fell through a seven inch gap between the train and the platform earlier this month. The little girl was not hurt.
