Supplies or running out. We are live in oakland with more on this bad bug and what area doctors are advising tonight. Jesse. Reporter good evening to you. Every year like you said, doctors say get a flu shot. It seems like every year there is a particularly nasty strain out getting people sick. This year, so many people heeded the warning, took the advice, that it is difficult to find a place that has the shot. Health Officials Say the annual flu shot is researched a year in advance and is a recipe for the likely strain come winter. Her doctor advised to getting inoculated last fall. He was very adamant. It is free, you can get it. Reporter that advice rings true as Health Experts say the current strain spread rapidly. There have been 19 deaths in the bay area. A lot of people are getting sicker than usual and they are waiting longer than usual to come to the hospital. Reporter she strongly suggest people get a flu shot, but some people have told fox 2 that in some places the vaccine is in short supply. Douglas perez writes one pharmacist near his house had none and they dont expect to receive any more. A second pharmacy said they had vaccines left and said to come in. At least one pharmacy said they were fresh out and another told us they ran out, were restocked and ran out again. That is kind of unnerving, you know. I mean, why is there a shortage . Reporter officials arent saying there is a shortage, but supplies and some places are running low or out. The days long gap between reorder and restock can put the shot on hold for a period of time for some patients. You have to use standard precautions. Be extremely vigilant about being clean around people and staying away from sick contact. Tamiflu is only indicated if you are near people that are very sick and have flu. Tamiflu is not something you can use for preventative measures. Reporter she says flu shots, even well after flu season has started is the best defense against getting the bug or lessening its impact if you become affected. Some residents say that armed with this information, they may reconsider. A lot of people are getting sick around me. Maybe i should get it. Reporter you can get flu shots at pharmacies, your Healthcare Provider and county Health Offices around the bay area. If youre feeling sick, stay home, do not come into work and spread the bug. Reporter the governor says this was a day when many hawaiians thought their Worst Nightmare was happening and he promises changes will be made so a terrifying false alarm dont happen again.
