Bay bridge. For mornings like this, they are therapeutic. Yeah. I like that isolated quiet time. Im a big fan of the fog ever since living in the city back in the days. I could go barefoot on the beach. For me, it is therapeutic. I think it is quiet and mysterious and calming. Although it is hard to drive through. It is hard to drive through. Steve and i have been the fog brothers this morning. What is also therapeutic is coaching youth sports. This is the push into the busy season. We start hoops today. Are you a yeller. Huh . Are you a yeller . It depends on the moment. I will blow the whistle and get them going. I remember coaches yelling at me. It did me good. Im not a screamer. That is baseball season. I encourage anyone who has the time and the schedule that allows you to do it, volunteer in youth sports. I dont know what volunteer opportunities you do. But if you can get into the classroom. School is my thing. Volunteer if you can. 2018. New year. Busy news day. Here in the bay area but also down south. Were going to start there. The number of people who have died in the mudslides in Southern California is at 17. Crews will continue the search for victims trapped by the mud or inside badly damaged homes. More than a hundred homes are destroyed with hundreds more damaged. People say surviving the wildfire and then seeing their homes hit by waves of mud seems just like a horrific dream. My home is standing. But when the flash flood came, we couldnt pull the door shut. So it is just full of mud. And the back side i guess collapsed a little bit. Officials say areas under voluntary evacuation orders were the hardest hit by the flash floods. Were now finding out that Santa Barbara county did not send out emergency alerts until after the mudslides began in montecito. The l. A. Times reports that officials sent out alerts shortly before 4 00 Tuesday Morning when mud was already rolling down the hills. Messages for mandatory and voluntary evacuations were sent to all registered cell phones in the area. It is not clear how many people actually received the alerts. The storm that hit the state earlier this week creating hazards far from the fire zones. It sent trash and tree limbs, animal waste, pesticides into the los angeles river. Now health and environmental workers are using booms to capture the debris before it goes out into the harbor and into the pacific. They say the biggest problem really is all of the plastic. Well, in pacifica, demolition is underway on a home on the coastline. I think everyone in pacifica know where esplanade avenue is. We have been there many times reporting. And now another home is being demolished. Reporter yes. Sal, it was one of my first stories i ever did when i came to ktvu in 2009. They were talking about tearing down Apartment Buildings back then. The story continues because erosion is a constant problem along the pacifica coastline. They are taking a little break but they have done part of the demolition of the home already. This is the last home on the oceanside of the street. The 500 block of esplanade. It is the last one standing. They will do the heavy lifting a short time from now. Lets show you a view from the cam earlier this morning. You can see the house is about 900 square feet. And about half of it has now been demolished. The owners are out here and watching the process. They have lived here for seven years. And until april of 2016, they actually made a few efforts to try and save the home. They picked up the house and moved it about 20 feet closer to the sidewalk. They thought that would buy them some time but the erosion kept happening and then they tried to find another lot elsewhere in pacific to place the home that. Didnt pan out either. Now the former homeowners say they wanted to be here to see the demolition for themselves and say goodbye. A million emotions. Lots and lots of mixed emotions. Its been a long road. Its been a long wait. Its been a lot of highs and lows. We had a lot of hope when we moved this in april of 2016. Reporter now, overthe last several years, at least two multiunit buildings on esplanade, about a half mile away from the home, had been demolished because the cliff below was washing away. Erosion is a constant concern on the coastline. This home was built in 1949. The owner says it is the last home on the oceanside of esplanade to be torn down. Take you back out here live. The demolition is expected to take another couple of hours or so throughout the morning. Pacifica police have closed off the street. There were a lot of neighbors and people in the area who were coming out and trying to take a look at what was going on. But, yeah, the homeowner says a lot of mixed emotions here. They just wanted to watch the process. But their efforts to try to save the home were in vain. It is just one of the risks of living on the california coastline. Back to you guys. Hey, allie, just down the block, there are a couple of Apartment Building thats are still on that side of the street. And people are obviously still living there. What is the do you know if any of those buildings are being looked at . Reporter well, it looks like those Apartment Buildings are at least partially theyre newer and theyre partially under construction. The ones that i mentioned that were torn down several years ago, i think like six maybe one was torn down six or seven years ago. The last one in the last couple of years. Those are on the i guess it would be the north side of the building thats youre looking at in the distance. But its kind of a touch and go situation. Theyre constantly evaluating what is going on with the erosion, what is going on with the cliff that all of these properties sit on. You know, the homeowner of this house mentioned that at one point there were several homes lining this side of esplanade avenue. And over the years, over the past couple of decades, theyve had to demolish the houses little by little because of the erosion on the cliffs below the home continue to wash away. What will it look like in ten more years i wonder. Allie rasmus, thank you. We spoke with oakland mayor schaaf and police chief anne kirkpatrick. They joined us in the studio to talk about new statistics of Violent Crime in the city of oakland falling for a fifth year in the row. The idea behind it is to try to provide services for those that are caught in a lifestyle of gun violence and give them a way out. Thats our first and foremost goal. The program goes after people who may be at risk of gun violence. Mayor schaaf said quality of life crimes will be a major focus this year for police. Certainly our focus in this coming year is going to be quality of life crimes. Sex trafficking on the streets remains a huge concern for us. And car breakins are off the hook throughout the bay area. Although we are very closed that we have seen a 61 reduction in home breakins over these five years. Mayor schaaf also told us that Law Enforcement and prevention programs are being paid for by money from the 2014 voter approved proposition c. So it is not really at risk of anything that washington has to say about operation ceasefire. A project to tear down a former bank filled with asbestos is moving forward in the city of oakland. The question remains what will go in its place. Right. Plans are officially on hold. Cristina rendon reports some people are now suggesting housing. It looks like there is some stuff already going on inside. Reporter as chair of the planning council, stewart flashman keeps a close eye on what is happening to the chase bank in oakland. This is the first time that theres been any activity in months on the building. After asbestos was discovered in the concrete during demo last year. I think the public really wants to see something happen here. Reporter and they do. I would like to see a nice little restaurant right there. I would like to see something that would benefit the community. We understand it will be a two to three weeks to complete the demolition. Reporter the city of oaklands deputy of planning says that the city is taking all proper precautions to make sure there is no exposure to the public durrant demolition. First a parking garage was approved and stores and restaurants but the changing nature of retail forced the developer to put the project on hold. For now nothing will happen when the building is torn down. Theyre trying to make the project work. We think that phase 2 will happen at some point. Even after the demo is done, the question remains what will go here longterm. Thats right. Thats a big question mark. A lot of people around here would like to see housing come in. Reporter but the current lease between the developer and Property Owner precludes housing unless the lease is renegotiated. Since november, ktvu has been reaching out to the developer trc retail but the company has no comment at this time. Im glad that something is going on. A feeling of frustration that the plan that had been approved isnt going forward. And hope because maybe there will be some residential finery reporting in oakland, cristina rendon, ktvu fox 2 news. This weather this morning, there was a lot of fog. In fact doing my traffic reports this morning, i couldnt even show some of the cameras we had. Highway 4, for example, we couldnt see it. It was covered in fog. And also at times the bay bridge, richmond, carquinez all over the place. That is yet. Thank you, sal. We had a lot of fog. Even in the city. It wasnt just around the bay. Some of that fog is super thick. I think it will be back tonight and tomorrow. Once it lifts, and there are sign thats it will, there will be a haze layer. Talk about a cold front. 56 in chicago. Minneapolis, 10. St. Louis, 62. That is a huge system. But back west, we have a small system just kind of draped across us. A little more going up in seattle and portland. Light rain. Mendocino county, lake county over the valley. I would think napa county looks to be the line of cutoff. Not much down here. We have plenty of thick fog here. Some sun to the south. I think we will get breaks towards san jose and the santa clara valley. To the north, a cloudy day. The fog and low clouds may not thin out at all on friday. There are signs it will over the weekend with warmer temps. Next week it looks like tuesday we will get a system. A lot of energy coming across the pacific. Thursday and friday next week a bigger system and much colder air. Thats a week away. Today, 50s and 60s and partly sunny. To the south, mostly cloudy. More sun and warmer temps going into the weekend. A little break there. Thank you, steve. You bet. Coming up on mornings on 2 the 9, he is a controversial santa clara judge in the brock turner Sexual Assault case. The efforts to recall judge persky. Coming up next on mornings on 2 the 9, controversy on the set of a movie all the money in the world. More on the reports over how much more Mark Wahlberg was compared compared to his female coactor michelle williams. Are you ready for retirement . Many genxers say no. That is up in a minute. Many do not think they will have enough money to retire. According to a new survey, nearly four out of ten people between 65 and the late 70s dont plaintiff they will be able to retire. 43 say they are behind in their savings and half of them say they worry about running out of money once they leave the workforce. Now, part of the problem could be the phasing out of the traditional pension plan funded by employers. In their place workers have to do most of their saving on their own through the good old 401 k s and irss. To talk about this more is kate yarro. Thank you for being with us. My pleasure. Why do you think the gen xeres are not saving for retirement . They still have time to some extent. They have been hit by bad news in the course of their lives and it makes them feel like it would be an impossible task. It is not. There is absolutely no reason to not start now. They really pretty much have to. And is it largely through 401 k s and irss . Some people are not doing the fulltime job with full benefits anymore. Exactly. So the impetus is really on the consumer, on our genxeres to take the plunge and make the saving investments. The easiest thing is to have it automatically deducted from your paycheck and put the max amount into your 401 k . Start your roth ira. Do everything that you can now to build up the nest egg. There is absolutely nothing like the beauty of compounding interest. As much as you can save, while there have been economic blows that make it harder to save, worrying about economic blows is not going to put food on the contain when youre 70 years old. This generation will live a long time. They have to prepare now. Where do these people who who are going to say where do i get the money . I have a feeling your answer is going to be, well, look, you dont need to buy a new car. You dont need to have all of the latest gadgets. You dont need to give yourself as much now to delay gratification and have more later. Yes. Such a good point. So, you know, the Little Things that people can do to save money really add up in the long run. So, you know, skipping the lunches out, buying less expensive wine. This is a generation that actually likes eating out. It is expensive. There are ways to cut back. Five dollars here and there or ten dollars here and there will it make me prepared for retirement . But it adds up. If you spend 5 less every day, that will make a big difference in the long run. The easiest way to do that is never see the money in the first place. Automatically put it into a savings plan. We find that people tend to spend what they have. So if you have this perception that you dont have it to spend because it has been taken out before you can get to it, people adjust to that pretty easily. Do you give the same advice to a genxer who lives here in the bay area, an expensive place to live, compared to a genxer maybe in the middle of the country . Oh, it is so hard in the bay area. I mean, the rents are incredible. The cost of living is so high here. And really your average genxer is competing with incredibly affluent genxeres for entertainment and dining and so on. I think there has to be a commitment to me that it doesnt matter what everybody else is spending. Im going to be cheap because im responsible for my future and i want that to be a good one. And so, you know, if your friends are pressuring you to spend as much as they are, which is common in the bay area, you have to be the one to say thats not how i role. Like gasia, she is good at that. Get new friends, right. We will have a pot luck at my house. Thats my saturday night plan. I want to underscore i was shocked when someone told me i should plan on 80 of my salary now. 80 is what i will need in retirement. I thought i was going to live cheaply. But thats not the case. Right. Exactly. And, you know, its way better to have more than you need. And thats so unlikely anyway. And, you know, a parttime job when youre older, that may be the future for a lot of the gen xeres. That they wont fully ever retire. But to have that security is theres nothing more important. There is nothing more important. It is has to visualize when youre young and fun things to do. It is not that far away. It happens before you know it. Always a pleasure. Enjoy the rest of the day. Thank you. You too. Sometimes you can work longer if you want to live in the bay area. Right. Or retire earlier and pack up and go to another state. Right. And live basically on what youve saved. So there is that debate. Gasia and i are on the same mind on this. I dont know yeah. It is hard to live somewhere else. Do you want to work another seven or eight years of your life. Maybe. Honestly. People work too long and get sick and it is over and they dont get to enjoy the time with their spouse or loved ones. For me it is pack my bags and take off. Where are you going . Ill visit. Well visit you in minnesota. Are you knocking minnesota . Gasia. No. We have a lot of people talking about this. We have made it the question of the day. What age do you plan to retire. 41 say younger than 65. 15 say right at 65. 27 say older than 65. 17 say of you say never. Rob tweets hoping by 65 or earlier but that doesnt mean i wont have active hobbies to keep me busy. Linda says i struck the with the issue of boredom during retirement. My house is the cleanest it has ever been but it is nice to be on my own schedule these days. Nick says anyone under 50 replying anything other than never is lying to themselves. Interesting. I have a couple responses saying i want to do it just before or after 65 but i want to move out of state. I think once you leave, you cant come back financially. Our hope is hang on as long as we can. Of course our kids will up and move to like boston. That will change things for us. So thanks for talking with us and using the ktvuthe9. Back to aquatic park we go. It happened again. Details about the latest sea lion attack at San Franciscos aquatic park. Today is Human Trafficking awareness day. The effort to recall the judge in the brock turner Sexual Assault case took a big step this morning. Recall organizers are delivering 100,000 signatures they say to put the recall of the judge on the ballot. Alex savidge is live at the santa clara registrar of voters with the latest. Alex. Reporter well, good morning to all of you. Members of the recall Persky Campaign just hand delivered nearly 100,000 signatures in an effort to put this recall issue on the ballot. They say the judge in the brock turner case, judge aaron persky has lost the trust of the people of Santa Clara County. Just a short time ago they delivered the signatures to the registrar of voters. Have a look. Tell me what democracy looks like. This is what democracy looks like. Reporter and this was the scene just minutes ago as members of the recall Persky Campaign marched inside the registrar of voters and delivered boxes filled with 100,000 signatures, which have been collected over the past four months. Now, it was back in 2016 when judge persky sparked outrage when he sentenced then stanford swimmer brock turner to six months in jail for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman outside of a campus party. Turner was set free after serving just three months behind bars. Although he was required to register as a sex offender for life. The chair of the Campaign Says this is part of a Broader Movement in the country. The voters of Santa Clara County are saying loud and clear that they will hold judge persky accountable for his pattern of bias in favor of athletes and other privileged offenders who commit sex crimes and violence against women. Reporter now, judge persky did follow recommendations from the Probation Department when it came to sentencing brock turner in that case. And he ultimately was cleared of any misconduct in the case by the commission on judicial performance, an independent state agency. Judge persky has asked a state Appellate Court to block this recall election. But, again, nearly 100,000 signatures were hand delivered to the registrar of voters in event to put judge persky on the ballot to be recalled this coming june. Now the registrar of voters will be checking to see if there are enough valid signatures. They need 54,000 valid signatures. If they find there are enough valid signatures, the issue will be put to voters. Voters will be able to design if they want to recall judge persky and then they will be able to decide who they would like to replace him. All right. Alex savidge with the latest. Thank you. The f. A. A. Is investigating the latest case of airplane pilots becoming confused at the runways at sfo. It happened tuesday when an airport official says the plane was cleared to land on 28 right. When it was a mile out from the airport, air Traffic Controllers noticed it was lined up for 28 left. Another plane was on 28 left. So they told it to carry out a missed approach and head to the west. Air mexico go around. Go around. Air mexico 658 turn west heading 265. Left heading 265. Heading west 265. So the pilot touched down at sfo safely just a few minutes later. No one was hurt. This is the third incident in six months where a flight crew set up for an incorrect landing. The other two incidents involved air canada jets. Were learning that another swimmer has been attacked by a sea lion at San Franciscos aquatic park. This is the third such attack in the past month. Leigh martinez arrived at aquatic park minutes ago and has the situation there. Reporter we just talked to an official with the National Parks service. They have no plans to close aquatic park. They will just monitor the incident right now. Now, back during the first attack, the Marin Mammal Center told us that sea lion attacks are rare. Now we have a third victim. The bite was bad enough to send the swimmer to the trauma center. It happened at 7 00 this morning. The Fire Department says this time the victim was a woman. Swimming in aquatic park when a sea lion bit her on the leg near the knee. A paramedic was also swimming in the cove and helped the woman to the shore. Were told that her injury was not life threatening. This is the third confirmed sea lion attack in a movement the previous attacks occurred on december 14th and 15th. In the first attack, 56year old christian says that he saw the sea lion coming at him before it bit him on the arm. He had to be rescued by a nearby sailboat and later taken to the hospital. The Second Attack happened less than 24 hours ago later when a swimmer was bit near his groin. It is difficult to track sea lion attacks because the sea lion is gone by the time that researchers make it out here. At this time it is impossible to know if it is the same sea lion responsible for the attacks. The National ParksService Spokesperson says the sea lions do a lot of migration. Theyre gone within three months. So he doesnt believe that it could be the same sea lion but he warns swimmers when you are swimming out in the cove, the attacks have happened closer to the mouth there. You see birds swooping down. That likely means there are fish out there. That could be feeding time for the sea lions. It is best to stay away from that area if you see birds swooping down. Thank you, leigh martinez. Today is national Human Trafficking acareness day. Human trafficking is a form of modern day slavery involving both children and adults. There are an estimated 25 million victims of Human Trafficking around the world. 1300 of the cases were reported right here in california in 2016. The San Francisco collaborative against Human Trafficking will hold an event in San Francisco today to talk about efforts to stop the problem. On april 27th, the movie traffic starring paula patton will be released worldwide. It is filmed in sacramento and tells the story of investigative journalists on a trip with her boyfriend when they find themselves wrapped up with a gang involved with Human Trafficking. Joining us live is the director dion taylor. Youre a story teller. Why did you want to be involved antell this story here. Just be a father, you know, of a 13yearold daug, the area that im in, i kept hearing all of these crazy stories about trafficking. In sacramento. In sacramento. And then i started googling and taking a look at what is going on around me. And i was just blown away. That was like the first step for me to start writing the script. As i got into it more and more, you know, i was like everybody else. I just thought, wow, this is something that happens in foreign, you know, countries. And then i found out, no, this is happening right here all the time. So you were learning as you were writing. Learning so much. I was blown away. So much so that i wrote the script. I said let me show people how easy it is for women to get trafficked. Obviously it comes in so many different formats. You know, from someone, you know, long time ago being pimping or whatever that might be. Now theyre actually grabbing little kids at the mall. Do you know what i mean . Now they have other kids that are 13, 14 years old that are texting your daughter, your son in the middle of the night having they meet somewhere and they grab them. I read so often when it comes to children, lets say your daughters age, 13, it doesnt always start as a bad relationship. Not at all. I read incidents where he takes me to dinner. He was great to me and then things turn. Right. At that point the girl is under his control. Yeah. And these kids, they dont have the their minds are not even set. They cant see what is happening. They dont understand what is going on. It is not just for kids. It is for older women. As i did more and more research, i said it is insane. You know what i mean . And seeing how girls are transported in the back of trucks. And how sometimes truck stops are used to dump and traffic different women. I said we have to take a stab at this. Wrote the script. Went to paula patton. She was an advocate for the film. We got dante who has been nominated for four Academy Awards to shoot the film. We shot the movie and im really excited about it. It is a thriller. We set up it up in the world where people can have an incredible time watching the movie but at the same time we shine a light on what it is about. Versus hitting you over the top of the head. It is not a psa. No. It is an incredible movie. You will have a blast. When someone goes and sees it and walks out, what do you want them to walk away with . With the idea of how easy it is for our women to be trafficked. Secondly i want you to walk away with the idea of how how significant this is in our communities right now. So just because you dont know anyone that has been trafficked doesnt mean that you wont. I remember a story of an airport worker that recognized that something wasnt right with a young girl coming through is he thats right. Her sharp eyes took that young girl. Yes. I just saw that story. What should we be looking for. I think theres a lot of different signs. Obviously if you see something, you know, as all humans a lot of people are not in tune with their gut. But when you do feel something in it your gut, you have to use your instincts and go forward with that. If you see someone who needs help, chances are they might need help. Many times the girls and men and kids cant say what is going on as theyre being transported. If you see signs of someone struggling or someone sitting too close to someone or they cant get up or get up and go to the bathroom. Being controlled. Yeah. Tell an authority or someone what is going on there. It is interesting because thats how the movie sets up for paula patton in this film. She sees a girl in the bathroom and the girl cant say what is going on. Thats where the movie starts. Okay. The world will see it come april 27th. Yeah. Traffic. Traffic. Filmed in sacramento. Yes. Thanks for taking time to write the script. Thank you. Coming up on mornings on 2 the 9, the Oakland Raiders under fire. Up next, the fine they could face over the hiring of head coach jon gruden. So, you know, whether you want to try out a new place or, you know, go go to one of your old favorite restaurants, lots of options. I have been in this area for a long time. It used to be that oakland didnt have a lot of fancy not fancy but just restaurants that would be destinations. Uhhuh. You would have to go across the bay to San Francisco. Right. That has changed, right . Definitely. Yeah. I mean, oaklands restaurant scene is so strong you really dont need to cross the bay. And theres all sorts of opposites from upscale to now that we have fast casual, more Counter Service style to, you know, mom and pop places. So theres really a range. Not to mention the culinary diversity. I mean, any type of food really. Yeah. Lets talk about that. Lets talk about that. What kind of restaurants can you name a couple that youve even tried yourself . Well, i havent tried this one yet but im excited about reaps in fruitvale which is a traditional arab babe reand restaurants. They specialize in these flat breads that sound really delicious re. I think that is exciting and one we called out as a great deal. There is one just up the block called dragon bar. Dragon gate bar and grill. Yes. The pictures look great.
