People in the burn areas in the north bay are preparing for the chance of flooding and mudslides. Crews have been very busy laying down barriers of straw and rock to try to protect property from debris. Christien kafton is now in napa county where erosion materials are being handed out. Reporter yeah. We are here at the napa expo. And this is the erosion material that youre talking about, sal. This is the straw waddle that you see. It is straw held together by a mesh so it can help hold the ground where it is when you lay it down. Already a couple of folks are showing up. We talked with one gentleman on the phone and he was making sure that he was in the right place at the right time because he needed some. You would need this material if the fire burned away the vegetation. With the rain, it could wash away and it could cause erosion problems. These are for areas impacted by last years fire. Both brace for the rains both counting bracing for the rains. They are distributing the material to make sure they can avoid the erosion problems. In sonoma county, 4,000 Property Owners have been notified. Letting them know about the storm that is due to hit later on today. You heard steve talk about it all morning long. Talking about just how much just how much rain were going to see. The concern is if we see too much rain, it could lead to some erosion in some area thats have already been burned out. For those areas, they have already been through enough. The concern now that rain could bring further problems. You know, weve already seen the fires. Now of course the concern is that it could be a flood, it could be landslide, mudslides. Kind of debris that washed down in these areas. We are trying to get them all home. There is a huge bulk of people who think that their pets parished and theyre just not looking. It is amazing to bring a cat home to an owner and see the joy and happiness it brings to a family. Thats why we do it. Reporter sally was found in a trap on new years day. My mom started petting her. She looked down at her hands and they were covered in black. Just like covered. Reporter when they gave sally a bath, they were amazed at the amount of ash and soot layered into her coat. And once cleaned up, she was a changed cat. Not aloof any longer. She is a cuddler that cant be alone. They were home with a window open when coffey park burned. They both i hope got out. We found sally so far. But we dont have envy. So it is a little bittersweet for me. It is hard. Reporter this effort is so appreciated. Santa rosa firefighters jumped in to help move the supplies last minute. Volunteers have no plans to stop doing this. Not while cats still show up and people still look. The reunions are everything. It breaks your heart. And theres lots of tears. And i just am have moved every time it happens because these people have lost everything. Theyre able to stay here. President trump approved a major disaster declaration in the fire thats killed 40 people and destroyed more than 5100 homes. North bay fire victims are being told to watch out for fake bills charging them for debris removals from the fires. They have been reported to authorities by some Property Owners in mend sip owe county mendocino county. They wont send any notices which ultimately call for payments from insurance agencies until the u. S. Army corps of engineers has completed the debris removal process. Officials say homeowners who have received a bill should not pay it and should instead notify authorities right away. President trump has declared a major disaster in the areas affected by the thomas fire down in Southern California. The declaration makes federal funding available to state and local governments and nonprofit organizations for emergency work in ventura and Santa Barbara counties. If you put it out there, you are holding yourself accountable because you put it out in a public way. Others will hold you accountable as well. Maybe you want to keep it private. And every year theyre probably thinking about ways to be more productive and earn more revenue and the employees can follow suit. I know Companies Use january as a time to refocus and have a big staff meeting to sort of align you know, to let you know what the companys goals are. So you can think how does that fit with mine. Aligning yourself with your employer is a winwin for everyone. Do you make resolutions . I do make them. Im definitely focused on minimizing stress. Thank you, steve. San jose police are looking for a ban who walked into a classroom at Harper Middle School yesterday morning and sexually assaulted and robbed an employee. This happened before students arrived for classes. Allie rasmus explains what happened and shows us Surveillance Video of the suspect. Reporter it happened at this private school here in san jose around 6 30 yesterday morning. An hour and a half before classes started. There were no students on campus when it happened. The schools communication director says the victim in this case was one of their teachers. She explained that that teacher had come in early to eagerly prepare her classroom for the first day of school after winter break. An emailed statement from the school says they are saddened and upset by what happened and, quote, we regularly review all protocols for any additional ways to help keep the community safe. We are helpful that the efforts of the police and community will result in a swift arrest. One of the efforts by police to find the suspect is releasing this Surveillance Video. Police say the man broke on to the school campus. You can see him wandering, pacing around the hallways. Around 6 30, police say he walked into the classrooms where the teacher was working and sexually assaulted her and robbed her. The man is described as 59, in his 20s. He is heavy set with a distinct and unusual walk. It is not your typical walk. This guy, you know, someone is going to be able to say that is soandso. Reporter in the meantime police will have extra papa trolls in the area. They had a visible campus as parents dropped off their kids at school. We feel that they are doing everything that they can. Reporter we also spoke to people who live in this residential area and most of them said they thought it was unusual for a random crime like this to happen. In oakland, police are searching for a hit and run driver who hit and killed a women early on new years day. Her mother wants the driver to surrender. I know it is killing your conscience right now. You wont rest until you come forward. The family reported her missing when she didnt show up for work the next day and put flyers up in hopes of finding her. Yesterday the family called the coroners office. Thats when they found out that she had been killed by a hit and run driver in a crosswalk monday morning at sunnyside in east coke land, about two blocks from her home. That was a real coward move. You know. It could have been your mom, your system, your cousin. Its not right. Police are searching for a dark colored sedan. Neighbors are calling on the city to install flashing lights at the crosswalk. Police are offering a 10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. He was charged with aggravated Sexual Assault and is being held in jail on 1 million bail. The San Bernardino county Sheriffs Department is mourning the death of Deputy Lawrence fouse. A 36year department veteran after being brutally beaten while off duty by a driver after a minor crash. Deputy fouse who was 70 years old was rushed to a hospital but never regained consciousness. Now to San Francisco where the board of supervisors will discuss the process of selecting an interim mayor. The board of supervisors president london breed of course has been acting as habiting mayor since the sudden death of mayor ed lee on december 12th. The person would hold the position until a special election on june 5th. The deadline to file for the mayoral race is tuesday, january 9th. The examiner report thats some supervisors would like to see who will run before picking an interim mayor. Whoever wins the june election will be able to serve out the remainder of the term through 2019. Neighbors are worried about a new Affordable Housing complex could actually be an eyesore.
