First though we have to start in the bay area. We will start in the south bay. Santa clara fire crews on the scene of what was a massive fire at a cardboard manufacturing plant. Right. This is at a building on matthew street, not far from the airport. Ktvus Christien Kafton is live at the scene and tells us that crews still have hours of work ahead of them. Reporter yeah. Hours of work ahead of them. Take a look. We are getting a much better idea of the workload ahead of them. You see the piles of cardboard. Theyre still dumping water on this cardboard. You can see why it was so difficult to put the fire out in the first place and why keep thanksgiving out is so tough. You see the piles of cardboard at this moment. Crews pouring water on them. The minute they stopped, you saw the steam and smoke coming off of them. They will start up again. They will be using this big piece of equipment to wet down the entire mess of cardboard there, trying to make sure that that stays out. Crews will be using that heavy equipment like this later on today to make sure that the water gets to where it needs to go. Now, crews first responded to reports of the fire here around 1 00 this morning and found an outside storage area engulfed in flames. All of the employees had evacuated and were accounted for so firefighters went defensive, in other words, surround and drown. Get water from the outside. No need for them to risk firefighter injury or any other injuries of anybody going in there. These were 15foottall stacks of cardboard that were going up. Crews that were here tell me that the piles of cardboard were sliding and moving around. So you can see just what kind of difficult and dangerous situation that could be. Coming back out to our live picture here, you can see that firefighters also working right now to clear some of the drains, trying to get rid of the water that was used out here overnight. Now that the sun is up, theyre getting a better idea on when they might launch their investigation, try to determine exactly how the fire started. As you might imagine, the timeline on that first, they need to make sure that the scene is secure, safe for the fire investigators to get in there. In the north bay, Santa Rosa Police are looking for a man who fired a gun in a road rage incident. It happened last night around 8 45. The victim says the suspect was kind of tailgating him. And then he noticed the driver was carrying a gun. He went down several side streets, trying to lose the suspect. When he tried to turn around, the suspect shot at him once, hitting the vehicle. A Community Watch group is offering 2,500 to anyone with information leading to an arrest in this case. Police say the gunman is described as a white or latino man in his 30s or 40s has a reseeding hairline and was seen driving a silver suv, possibly a mercedes. Police are blaming a shooting on new years eve on gunfire celebrating. Reporter as midnight arrived, so did the gunfire. Five, four, three, two, one. Reporter this was like any backyard party. About a dozen friends having fun, popping open the champagne. I need the champagne. Reporter in the moment, no one realized that one of them was hurt. She felt something. We asked what happened . Reporter Police Believe this spray of automatic gunfire may be the one that sent the bullet into the yard. Because they got an alarmed call about it from about a half block away. On the other side of davis street. The likelihood is that this bullet came down, struck the ground, ricocheted, losing all of its velocity and hitting here. Reporter just a foot or two over, it might have hit her directly. Fortunately she was not struck in the head or critically struck. We got lucky this time. Three, two, one. Police explained to them it happens across the bay area and the country and falling bullets have put people in the hospital and the morgue. And he said like you could be dead if like if that finds your head or your eye. We were lucky actually. Frustration last night for International Travelers arriving at u. S. Airports. U. S. Customs and border protections computers crashed, temporarily knocking out the passport processing system. San Francisco International was among the affected airports. Others included ohare, atlanta, miami, denver and seattle. The computer outage lasted about two hours but some travelers waited even longer as they tried to get through passport control. We come here and customs is just backed up. They set by the tie we arrived they said for two hours the system was down. So hundreds of people were just waiting. The kiosks up there were shut down. So they hoarded us all to this line. Okay. And were standing in line for an hour. People who just got off their flights, they open up the line and let them go into customs before us. We have been standing in line for an hour. A spokeswoman for u. S. Customs and borders dont believe it was a deliberate act. The leader of the new York City Ballet is stepping down amid allegations of physical and verbal abuse. Peter martins wrote a letter to the Ballet Company yesterday announcing his retirement that takes effect immediately. In the letter he denied engaging in any misconduct. He was reportedly arrested last week for dui. Just last month, the ballet announced it was conducting an investigation into the misconduct allegations. Despite the resignation, the investigation will continue. California lawmakers return to work tomorrow. For the first time as a group they will have to take on the growing Sexual Misconduct scandal at the capitol. The senate and assembly are expected to discuss policies for handling misconduct. Pleasant hill police asking for your help in an armed robbery. This took place at a gas station. They got calls of the robbery last night on oak park boulevard. These are pictures of the suspects taken from a surveillance camera. They were both wearing those ski masks. Police say the two men pulled handguns. They wound up stealing cash, cigarettes and beef jerky. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Pleasant Hill police. Criminal charges are expected to announced against the man who crashed into a chp vehicle on Christmas Eve. It killed the chp officer. Leigh martinez has the latest. Reporter chp has not released the name of the driver. Immediately after the crash, the suspected driver was taken to the hospital. At the First Press Conference on christmas day, the assistant chief of chp said once he was released from the hospital, he would be facing multiple serious charges much on Christmas Eve the officers were pulled over on the side of the roadway looking for reckless or impaired drivers. Before midnight a red cadillac struck the officers patrol car from behind. Officer camilleri was killed. His partner, officer velasquez, was injured but released from the hospital the next day. The suspect has not been named but he was identified as being 22 years of age and us ised of being under the influence of alcohol and marijuana at the time of the crash. On december 26th. A procession of Law Enforcement escorted the body of officer camilleri to his hometown of tracy. His funeral was saturday. Officer camilleri leaves behind a wife and three children. Again, the chp as well as the District Attorneys Office will be holding a joint press conference to announce charges against the suspected driver. That will go on at 10 00 this morning. The Golden Gate Division of the california Highway Patrol posted video of a rescue on facebook. The chp respond today a call just before 6 00 last night to search for three lost hikers in the table rock area of napa county. The helicopter crew flying with night vision immediately located the hikers who were waving their cell phone lights up at the chopper. One of the hiker was injured and had to be flown to a waiting ambulance. A reminder as people head back to work on bart. You need to show proof of payment while inside of the paid area of a station and on board a train. It is part of a in effort by bart in 18 to crack down on fare evaders. At last months preliminary hearing a judge ruled there was enough evidence to go to trial. Well this afternoon the hillsborough real estate accused of arranging the murder of her exboyfriend is due in court. Tiffany li and her boyfriend are accused of killing keith green in april of 2016. Today a pretrial conference will be held to set a date for a jury trial. Now, li. Had two daughters with green. Prosecutors say she worried that green would take custody of the children. In april, her family helped her post 35 million bail. At least 16 people were hurt today in a new york Apartment Building fire in the bronx. Firefighters smashed windows to get people out of the 12 apartments there. They think the fire started in a Furniture Store on the first floor. And here at home, santa clara firefighters are still at the scene of what was a huge overnight fire at a cardboard manufacturing plant. An outside storage area was engulfed in flames. When they got there, stacks 15 feet tall were sliding and collapsing. Employees were already evacuated. Firefighters put the flames out from a safe distance. Now there is a renewed effort to build trust between the community and police. Grants mother Wanda Johnson is now an advocate for atrisk youth and has been pushing for changes in policing. We want them to invest time in their communities. In a rare diplomatic move, south korea has offered to talk with north korea to find ways to cooperate on the Winter Olympics. Greg has the story from london. Reporter the 2018 Winter Olympics will kick off in just over a month in south korea. North korea was expected to boycott the games. Now the north and south are floating the idea of high level talks to get athletes cleared to participate. All of these people throughout my life really pushed me and supported me. And so it is why i went to college. It is why i came back and wanted to work in my community, because i felt like there were too many young people who grew up the same way that i did that were falling through the cracks. Reporter after graduating from galloway high school, she went on to receive her bachelors from uc davis and has been in Public Service ever since. I think the homelessness, the quality of life. Like i said, i grew up here. We have had our challenges. What im seeing on the streets today is really on a different level. A federal ruling kept in place president obamas 2016 order that paved the way for openly transgender people to enlist in the u. S. Military beginning in january of 2018. President trump said he wanted to reimplement the ban on transgender troops. But opponents filed four lawsuits and last month a federal judge denied a request by the Trump Administration to delay implementation of that order. The Trump Administration is appealing that ruling. One transgender veteran says people will always look for reasons to avoid change. Delays are made. Were going to do more research or develop better policy or Something Like that. And its a stall tactic. There is a special requirement that transgender applicants for the military must have certification from a medical provider verifying the individual has gone 18 months without clinically significant distress or impairment. In a new tweet this morning, President Trump is taking credit for the safety of airlines. I have been strict on commercial aviation. Good news it was reported there were zero deaths in 2017. The best and safest year on record. The president was referring to a report by the Aviation Safety Network which tracks plane crashes. It says there were ten deadly incidents involving cargo and commercial airplanes resulting in 44 deaths but none were passenger jets. Aviation safety has improved as more people fly. Three times as many flying today compared to 25 years ago. Verizon wants to use Wireless Technology to help improve unhealthy traffic conditions on city streets. It wants to get more involved in smart city construction. It has already started in sacramento and wants to expand to other cities. The city has been embedding wires into the roads and connects to cameras to analyze traffic. Always has been. Thanks. For someone new watching or tuning in this season, i was always wondering when you wrote, do you ever get lost because of the different story lines . Did that happen this season where you had to go back in time or previous episodes to find out where you are . Yes. Luckily im surrounded by people who know the show much better than i do. So they keep me from making the big horrible mistakes. As you enter this new season compared to last season, knowing that, you know, fox picked it up, do you approach this season a lot differently than you did compared to last season . Well, last season we had been off the air for i think 13 years. We went from a standing start. We have a running start this time. The approach is to do as was last time great original material. I think we have done that this time. We want scare the pants off of you and make is smart and funny and all of the things you that expect with the x files. Chris, when you have unbride with led success like you have with the x files, does that make you more cautious about the next brick on the pile or does it free you in knowing that weve got so many fans we really cant do wrong . No. You always want to be mindful of the fans and you want to give them what they want. You want to surprise them too. You want to keep them on the edge of their seat. Thats the trick. Its what keeps us working day and night. Ive got to ask you, since we have you, kind of related to the show but not, but the recent revelations by the pentagon about the sanctioned government investigation into ufos, what is your take on that. Well, we have been saying it from the beginning. It was validation for what we have been saying about what the government hasnt been telling us. I still think that thats the tip of the iceberg. And there will be more revelations down the line. Has working on the show given you unique access to government officials in this line of work . You know, some government officials. Ive had a lot of people come to me. Im a skeptic. Ive never seen a ufo or alien. But i have a lot of people who i absolutely trust tell me that they have seen ufos and have been ab ducked by aliens.
