San jose checking in at 42. Temperatures are down for most by a degree or two. Visibility looking good for most. Then as we get into the north bay, were seeing it develop and it clears up and redevelops. Santa rosa right now down about a quarter mile. You can see the dark shade of gray stretching over to the west there. Highway 101, visibility down to three or four miles. You may come across the patchy dense fog. It is more dangerous because it is clear and then a wall of fog, with little warning. Santa rosa, again, off to a very cold start. Through the 10 00, 11 00, still a chill in the air but feeling better. By lunchtime, low 50s there. We top out at 59, 60 degrees or so in the 3 00, 4 00 hour, before we cool off at 5 00. Chp officers from all over the bay area are coming to the bay area to show their support after a deadly crash on Christmas Eve involving one of their own. An alleged drunk driver crashed into the back of his patrol car. Candice nguyen is in hayward with details on what led up to the crash. Candice. Reporter yeah. We are learning more details about the funeral for the late officer. The chief is here with officers all over the bay area and stayed to help in this all hands on deck situation. The chp says that the officer chose to work on Christmas Eve when his patrol car was hit from behind by an alleged drunk driver. They will start organizing funeral plans. Since it was christmas yesterday, they could not. The arrangements will begin today. Around 11 45 chris has ma eve, he and another officer were pulled over conducting a routine holiday patrol when a 22yearold man crashed into their car allegedly. The suspect is accused of being high and drunk at the time. The impact was so long that it struck the side of the chp officer into a compact car. The officer leaves behind a wife and three children. Children were expecting their father to come home and help open Christmas Presents. Instead he chose to work today. Reporter the chp says that the officers names will join the other officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Candice, thank you for that update. It is 7 04 now. Starting new years day, bars, restaurants and companies that produce alcohol can now help people who have had too much to drink get home. They can offer vouchers for free. Current law does not allow any business with an alcohol license to offer customers anything except what is considered of inconsequential value. A San Rafael Group says it will promote and encourage heavy drinking and says the law does not forbid the vouchers to be used somewhere else to drink more. Deputies shot a man suspected of Domestic Violence. It happened shortly before 2 00 monday morning at a home on princeton street in hayward. Someone called to report a Domestic Violence incident. At the scene, a woman was found who said she had been assaulted by her husband. When deputies found the man on the rear patio of a home, he took a machete from his waistband and tried to attack them. Went deputy shot the suspect who was taken no the hospital and expected was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. Crews responded to reports of a fire at a onestory apartment on russell avenue near highway 101. It happened around 6 15. They were able to get the fire out quickly. But it did cause about 25,000 in damage. The woman who lived in the apartment wasnt home at the time but arrived just as those fire crews were finishing up. They say the fire started in her bathroom. No injuries though were reported. An Investigation Continues this morning into a Christmas Day house fire in San Francisco. It was first reported shortly before 1 00 a. M. On monday. On prospect avenue, in the burrell heights neighborhood. Four people were displaced. Firefighters were at the scene within minutes and managed to get everyone out of the burning home safely. But the fire caused major damage, including to the neighboring homes on either side of the house. Red cross now helping some of those people out. Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of that fire. Well, former California Attorney general bill lockyer used to enforce laws against drugs. Now he will be distributing cannabis. Two women suspected of a brutal attack in berkeley are scheduled to be in court this morning. The two are accused of assaulting another woman last monday night and then leaving her in the middle of a busy street where she was then hit by an car and fled the scene. The victim was later linked to the suspects. They will face attempted murder charges later today. The Highway Patrol is mourning the loss of one of their own after a crash on the nimitz freeway on late Christmas Eve. He and his partner were watching for impaired drivers when a red car slammed into their patrol car. The impact was so severe that it called a Utility Vehicle into a compact size vehicle. It gives you the idea of the speeds involved. Both officers and the driver of that red car were taken to the hospital. Officer camilleri died. He is survived by his wife, 12 yearold daughter and two sons, age 6 and 2. The other officer was treated for injuries and released. Investigators say the other driver was reportedly driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. He is seriously injured and will be booked on several felonies once his Condition Improves enough to transfer him out of the hospital and into jail. Even though some people thought having a White Christmas was great, casey segal reports that it is causing problems on the roads across the country as well. Chp is planning memorial for an officer who was killed in the line of duty on Christmas Eve. Candice nguyen is live at the chp office this morning. You are learning more about what happened. Reporter thats right. An officer from the office in hayward came out to raise the flag in front of the office to halfstaff behind me. This as officers are coming by to help. The plan for the public memorial and daytoday duties. One captain hopes to have details where and when the public can show support by the end of the week. Officer camilleri and another officer was pulled over on the side of south 880 in hayward when an alleged drunk driver, high as well according to investigators, crashed into the back of their car. That driver was 22 years old and was leaving a party. The crash killed camilleri, injured velasquez and left the suspect in serious condition. We have reports that there was an officer hit southbound 880. Officer down. Officer down. Officer down. Can i get units to southbound 880. It was so severe that it turned a Utility Vehicle into a small compact vehicle. It gives you an idea of the speeds that were involved. Reporter officer camilleri leaves behind a wife and three children. The second officer, officer velasquez has been released from the hospital is is expected to be okay. Starting new years day, bars, restaurants and companies that produce alcohol can help people who have had too much to drink to get home without getting behind the wheel of a car. A new state law allows them to offer drinkers vouchers for free or discounted rides through cab or ridesharing companies. The current law does not allow any business with an alcohol business to offer customers anything except what is considered, quote, of inconsequential value. The alcohol industry support this had law. A San Rafael Group says it promotes and encourages heavy drinking. It claims that the law does not forbid the vouchers to be used to go somewhere else to drink more. Chp investigating a deadly overnight accident that happened near berkeley around 1 40 a. M. The driver called police to report the crash. No other details have been released but the driver is cooperating. Deputies shot a man suspected of Domestic Violence. This happened shortly before 2 00 monday morning at a home on princeton street in hayward. Someone called to report a Domestic Violence incident at the time. Well, at the scene, chp found a woman who said she was assaulted by her husband. When the deputy found the man on a rear patio of the home, he took a machete from his waistband and tried to attack them. One deputy fired at the suspect, hitting him. Deputies arrested the suspect. He was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive. His name though was not released. The wildfire burns in ventura and Santa Barbara counties is now 86 contained. It has become the largest in state history. It has burned more than 281,000 quakers, destroyed 1,063 structures, mostly homes. Officials are hoping to have it contained completely by january 7th. The first issue they will probably have to address is the impending Government Shutdown. Reporter with tax reform in the rear view mirror, lawmakers have no choice but to address a growing list of pressing issues as President Trump says he wants to tackle infrastructure but has to avoid a Government Shutdown first. The current funding measure gives congress until january 19th to reach an agreement or face the prospect of a partial Government Shutdown. The latest plug was passed just hours before lawmakers skipped town for the december recess. It is the third time since the new fiscal year began that congress has resorted to a shortterm solution. Republicans acknowledge the possibility of the wind being taken out of their tax reform sails. You dont get long to enjoy something when you get an accomplishment like this. We have to shift our focus to the other challenges in front of us. Reporter Congress Also needs to keep the pentagon going and decide what to do about illegal immigrant thats came to the u. S. In the north bay valley locations, weve been watching fog along the valley floor in and around santa rosa. Be careful if youre getting out early. You may experience some of that. Also seeing a little bit of cloud cover and fog right along the coastline. Besides that, temperatures remain status quo. As we get into the afternoon, upper 50s, low 60s around the bay area. And it is another spare the air day, with air quality moderate to slightly unhealthy. During the winter months that means unless you are exempt, not a good idea to burn wood in the fireplace. One outbreak killed two people as twisters hit missouri and illinois. Straight line winds following the system affecting new york and michigan. Damage from that wind event costing 2. 1 billion. In april, more tornadoes, this time in the nations capital. Several of the citys famous blossoming cherry trees uprooted. The month of may delivering hail to denver, damaging property in what is now the most expensive hail storm in colorado history. 2. 2billion in damages. May also seeing historic flooding in parts of missouri and illinois. 20 people were killed. In june, 12 States Affected by severe hail and wind damage from wyoming to new york. Minnesota was especially hard hit with damage to buildings and cars. And this summer, an active atlantic hurricane season. 17 storms, including six major hurricanes. Among the biggest, Hurricane Harvey in late august, inundating texas and louisiana with water. Killing more than 90 people and costing nearly 200 billion in damage. Just days later, in early september, Hurricane Irma roared ashore. A catastrophic storm responsible for more than 130 deaths. It didnt stop there. September went on to be the most active month on record for atlantic hurricanes. Towards the end of the month, another deadly storm, Hurricane Maria devastating puerto rico. Destroying homes and knocking out power across the entire island. The fall was the warmest ever in parts of new england, florida, california and the southwest. This september through november marking the warmest period on record in more than a dozen cities, including caribou, maine, miami, florida, and san jose, california. By october, Deadly Wildfires were making headlines in northern california, killing more than 40 people. The blaze consuming more than 325 square miles and destroying at least 5700 homes and businesses. Another series of devastating wildfires breaking out in the Los Angeles Area in mid december. As for the winter ahead, government scientists predicting many Miles Per Hours could get a balmy winter with low temperatures expected across the south and northeast. The california Highway Patrol mourning the loss of one of its officers after a deadly crash on the nimitz freeway late on Christmas Eve. 33yearold officer camilleri and his partner why watching for impaired drivers when a red car slammed right into their patrol car. The impact was so severe that it turned a Utility Vehicle into a small cam pact vehicle. It kind of gives you an idea of the speeds involved. Both officers and the driver of the other vehicle were taken to the hospital. Officer camilleri died there a short time later. He is survived by his wife, 12 yearold daughter, and two sons, ages 6 and 2. The other officer was treated for injuries and released. The driver of the red car was reportedly driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. He is seriously injured and will be booked on several felonies once his Condition Improves enough to transfer him out of the hospital and into jail. An and i are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of officer camilleri. We join his family, friends, and the entire california Highway Patrol in mourning his death and honoring his sacrifice. This may have been the best Holiday Shopping season in seven years. Retail analysts say starting november the 1st, sales for everything except cars and trucks up almost 5 . That is good news for retailers that have really struggled through years of people shopping online, bankruptcies and a number of stores have closed. By then a small crowd of shoppers had already waited out in front for the doors to open. National Retail Federation estimates about 9 of all preholiday sales are returned or exchanged. That is another chance for retailers to get shoppers back into the stores. They are trying to get rid of old stock. Retailers are banking on consumers spending more when they have gift cards or returns. We spoke with one man who was in and out within less than five minutes for a return and told us thats why he was here, not his wife, to avoid overspending on a return. No. No. No. Not for me.
