California Highway Patrol officer, Andrew Camilleri, was with his partner, doing a maximum enforcement patrol on highway 880 in heyward. The office as part the shoulder to use radar and license plate readers to search for potentially dangerous drivers out on the holiday weekend. Instead, chp says an impaired driver found them. A cadillac being driven by a 22yearold, at a very high rate of speed, drifted off the road and hit them from behind. Reporter officer Andrew Camilleri, in the passenger seat later died. The impact was so severe that it turned a Utility Vehicle into a very small compact vehicle. It gives you an idea of the speed the ball. Reporter the driver who hit them, had previously been consuming alcohol, and m arijuana. This person, a 22 year old, chose to drive while under the influence of alcohol, and also drugs. The assistant chief says he has been an officer with chp for a year and now four months. Andrew was drawn to this profession due to his courage, integrity and desire to serve. Andrew camilleri, we consider a hero now and forever. Reporter the suspect driver was also taken to the hospital. We do not know the condition he is in. We are told by chp he is facing serious charges when he is released, from the hospital. California association of Highway Patrolman credit union will be putting together a fund for the fallen officers family, in the time of need. Back to you guys. This week we introduce you to some of the families have benefited from the generosity of strangers and we start today with the heckmans. They lost their home and everything inside of it during the northbay wildfires. They did not know where they were going to live, but they found help. Reporter it is fair to say the heckmans are just settling in. They moved to the sauce after spending weeks in a hotel and it will take a little used getting used to. Home looks different now, virtually everything is new or donated. There has been an immense amount of support from family and friends. Reporter for almost nine years, home was north of town. Tucked in hills, it was a secluded retreat. The northbay fires came so quickly on october 8, in just a moment, a normal night turned into a race to escape the f lames. The day we visited what was their own home, the wind was screaming through the trees, as we walked up the driveway. This wind is making me nervous. They will never forget that night. After a family dinner with their two children already tucked in their beds. The halle winds in that deadly fire came on so fast. Is a came around the corner, i saw that, i saw a wall of orange. It made your heart skip a moment, it was probably a sound i will never forget. Hearing the wind whipping, and seeing that. I sprinted up the hill, and found her already on the phone with 911. My 911 call was at 9 41. Victoria was supposed to be asleep, but they like to look out her bedroom window. She said mom, there is an orange glow of the window, what is it. I went into the bathroom, and pull back the curtain and i just saw this wall of orange. Reporter they could not escape down the driveway because a tree had fallen. They used a fire road. I didnt have time to grab anything, we had to leave our cat behind. We had to get out, we left her car behind. A lot of things broke just right for us to be able to get out of there the way we did. Reporter by morning, they knew they could not go back. Since then, they have been trying to move forward. For dan hickman, that meant finding a new home. That wednesday, after the fire started, i jumped on craigslist and started looking. Reporter he found this one, it was still being renovated but he applied right away. He knew they were not the only ones facing this long road of recovery. We did have an easier time getting in. The owner made a reference to having received numerous phone calls, from thirdparty insurance companies, and the like looking for places for other victims of the fire, to be able to put them up while their homes are being rebuilt. Finding a was only half the battle. The hickmans had enjoyed a low fixed rent, for many years. This home cost more. Family members offered to help, but making the numbers work took some work. That is where the chronicle season of sharing fund stepped in. The fund provides temporary assistance to people in need, in the bay area. It paid the hickmans first months rent. Our new rent payments double what we were paying before. Having one month taking care of, that is a pretty sizable chunk. We blend that out over the next year, that makes this place much more affordable for us. Reporter as they build his new home they are grateful for the help that continues to come in. The bunk bed mangled by fire, in the childrens old room, has been replaced. The two kids had to share a room before. Now they have separate spaces. Reporter their 12yearold daughter, victoria, now has a pink carpet. Her bed came from lake county. The dresser and the bookshelf came from a friend in concorde. Reporter her sixyearold brother, alex, sleeps on the bed bought with the help of gift cards from community groups. He plays at a table full of donated legos.
