It is normally slow through the area so give yourself some extra time as you make the commute. There have been no major issues. On the bay bridge toll plaza traffic is going to be backed up for 15 to 20 minutes. It is more normal than it was last hour where we had a minor issue. Things are beginning to pick up and we are optimistic by 9 00 this morning we will have some clearing which is exactly what we want. This is a look at interstate 880 in oakland in front of oracle arena where things look okay. We have a moderate commute today with nothing major going on. Expect what you normally would. Lets get back to the desk. Breaking news overseas, Royal Air Force base mildenhall in Eastern England is under lockdown because of what is being described as a significant incident. The base is used by the us air force. British Authorities Say there was a dispute at the gates and a man driving a car tried to force his vehicle inside the military compound. We know that he was arrested but the base is on lockdown. Everyone has been told to stay in their offices turn off the lights and shut the blinds. This is affecting Royal Air Force base mildenhall. We will stay on top of this and bring you more as we get it. Happening now, reports across the us trying to recover after a power outage at the worlds Busiest Airport yesterday. Authorities from Hartsfield Jackson International Airport in atlanta say that an underground electrical fire shutdown operations. There were no lights in the terminals including the baggage areas and waiting areas. There is no power on the runways either. The flights were canceled or diverted. Travelers were left to fend for themselves and they were helping people who could not help themselves. What has been shocking is that we havent seen any Emergency Management Like Police Officers or firefighters to help with traffic control. We were literally carrying old people down the escalator and up the escalator and carrying wheelchairs. My heart was racing because i was scared for these people and we are just like random people trying to evacuate one of the largest airports or most populated airport in the world. Because the Atlanta Airport is so big problems can affect the entire air travel system. Under the planes and flight crews are out of place especially on the east coast. It could take days before airlines get everything back to normal. This is one of the busiest travel weeks of the year to. Some good news, not much of an impact here in the bay area. Two flights from sfo to atlanta have been canceled and one flight from atlanta to San Francisco has been closed. Oakland and san jose are reporting no cancellations but some flights were later landing. Bart police are searching for three men who stabbed a man and woman last night at the hayward bart station. Alex savidge is at hayward now, tell us more about the investigation. Reporter bart police are searching for three attackers in this case who they say stabbed one man and punched a woman that he was with. This all happened last night inside of this parking structure here at the hayward bart station. Officers were called just before 9 30 last night and that is when they found the 28year old man and woman suffering from different injuries. The victims were rushed to the hospital. The stab wounds are not considered lifethreatening and the woman suffered minor injuries during the attack. The motive remains unclear but people who regularly use the hayward bart station say that they always try to stay alert. You can never be too safe. It is a parking structure and i have to come at this hour really early and i simply dont feel safe parking my car in there for vandalism or getting attacked by somebody. That is why i park over there and take the extra steps down the stairs. Reporter bot police have a vague description of the men possible for the attack here at the parking structure. We should point out that there are surveillance cameras in the structure so there is the possibility there is some video that could help investigators identify the three attackers. They are searching for the attackers and with that being said if anyone knows anything about the crime last night at the bart part station they should put in a call to police. Dave, back to you. Meantime, the bay area honored mayor ed lee yesterday at a public memorial at city hall. The mayor was remembered as a humble lowkey politician whose political career was something he never set out to do. Several speakers remembered the mayor as a man without flash who put the city first. Ed lee was a person who had an infectious smile. He had a feeling that he expressed and you wanted to work with him. Whenever i got a call from ed lee, it was always pleasant. I didnt have to shrink back what does he want now . Even when he asked for things, he did it with such a charm and humanity that it was welcome. He gave politics a good name. He gave San Francisco a good name. I am not aware of any civil servant, any elected official who has served in as many leadership and management positions in the city. Ed lees 27 years of Public Service to San Francisco are truly compelling and they are also unique. Ed lee was the first Asian American mayor of San Francisco and he championed San Franciscos technology industry, focused on reducing unemployment and spent his terms creating more Affordable Housing. Congresswoman nancy pelosi says ed lee was not always front and center in community and government events. She remembers seeing the mayor talking to people about the issues that affected them and their lives in the city that he loved and he always did it with optimism, grace and dignity. Every subject that he was involved in, he smiled and connected whether it was housing , cutting ribbons at housing events, whatever it was. Many describe the mayor as the type of man who didnt need to be the loudest voice in the room to be heard. He died unexpectedly Tuesday Morning at the age of 65. An online petition to rename a plaza after mayor ed lee has 1600 signatures. Last month they voted to change the name from Justin Harmon plaza to the embarcadero plaza, after the death of ed lee they have created another petition to change it to ed lee plaza. They will deliver the petition after gathering 2500 signatures. Later today the acting San Francisco mayor will take part in one of her First Official duties cutting the ribbon for an expansion at an urban Health Center on mission street. More beds and medical services are being added to the center. In the past 10 years the facility has served 3000 Homeless People after they were treated and released from hospitals. Over the past two years there have been more than 100 bay area freeway shootings. Coming up, we will tell you what one city is doing today to reduce those numbers. Judge Alex Kaczynski issued a statement that says a battle over accusations would not be good for the judiciary system. He will retire immediately. Just last week at least 15 women including court clerks and staffers accused him inappropriately touching them or making lewd comments. The 67yearold was the chief judge of the ninth circuit from 2007 through 2014. Firefighters in new york city say that three children and their mother were killed in a terrible fire in brooklyn this morning. Five others were injured including the childrens father. The fastmoving flames raced up the stairway of a threestory home trapping the entire family and others living in the house. Several firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the flames. Investigators are at the scene trying to determine the cause. President trump could be days away from fulfilling a Major Campaign promise to overhaul us tax laws. A group of bay Area Business leaders is proposing ideas to ease traffic on bay area roads. The group is made up of the Bay Area Council, Silicon Valley Leadership Group and a think tank group. Some of the ideas include a proposed mega tax measure to expand bart and Ferry Service and to add a second tube for bart to ease bottlenecking. They will use autonomous buses that have their own lanes as well. The changes could cost as much as 100 billion. That leads us to sal who is watching the roads. We are watching the commute starting on monday before christmas as we approach christmas we will have people taking time off. Today seems normal as we start with the golden gate bridge. Things are looking pretty good with no major problems in marin county and traffic looks okay on the richmond bridge. On the other side of the bay traffic is moving okay on this bridge getting into San Francisco but there is a backup at the toll plaza of at least 20 minutes. So you can see it is pretty much a normal commute and it does not look lighter than usual to me. This is 880 northbound and southbound starting to fill in on the way past oracle arena. An update from breaking news, a lockdown has been lifted at a british air base used by the eris us air force. One man has been detained and he is the only person injured. He tried to force his vehicle inside the military compound at the Royal Air Force base mildenhall in Eastern England. The compound was on lockdown but that is no longer the case as of minutes ago. Us personnel detained one man who tried to force himself inside the compound and we are working to learn more details as to the motive. We will bring you details as we get them. The Busiest Airport in the world is working to get all operations back to normal. The lights are back on and travelers are checking in at hartsfieldjackson International Airport in atlanta. This after the airport lost power for nearly 11 hours yesterday stranding 100,000 passengers. Certainly disrupting flights around the country and the problems could continue for the next few days as planes and crews get back into place. Not many problems in the bay area to report from the issue. Two flights from sfo to atlanta have been canceled, one from atlanta to San Francisco was canceled. Oakland and san jose airports are reporting no cancellations but some flights landed much later than scheduled last night. Three close close calls at sfo have prompted action. The congressman is proposing new legislation to safeguard cockpit voice recordings after airliner incidents. This would include occurrences like earlier this year when a air canada jet came close to landing on a taxiway where fully loaded jets were ready to take off. Ntsb rules did not classify the incident as serious because nobody was hurt which means airlines were not required to hold the cockpit recordings. The congressman wants to close the loophole. He says that everyone could learn from what happened if the evidence was saved. Family and friends of mayor ed lee are remembering him as a man of integrity and humility. His family and friends spoke yesterday at a twohour memorial inside the city hall rotunda. Mayor ed lee died last week after collapsing at a San Francisco Grocery Store. The medical examiner has yet to release the official cause of death. The event yesterday was filled with former mayors including former mayor louis brown. He told many funny stories and shared uplifting memories. The former mayor described ed lee as candid diplomatic friendly and unflappable. On any given day, he would do what needed to be done to solve the problem and make things work. I am very pleased. Former mayor brown drew some laughs when he said ed lee told terrible jokes. He said that he will always remember the goodness in him. The wildfires in ventura and Santa Barbara counties have been burning for two weeks for the first time in one week fire crews kept the fire from expanding overnight. It has burned 422 square miles and is still 45 contained. 18,000 homes are in danger and thousands of people had to evacuate. Fire crews hope to make more progress today and tomorrow because strong wind is expected to return wednesday. The firefighters said a sad goodbye to one of their own. The firefighter who was killed last week battling the thomas fire in Southern California was honored. The procession for cory iverson brought his body back home to san diego. He was 32 years old. He is survived by his pregnant wife and their twoyearold daughter. He talked a lot to the cub scouts about heroes. He is a hero. I dont know him, but it gets to me. The procession in san diego gave people a chance to turn out along the highway and pay their respect. The overpasses were crowded with people waving american flags and holding banners in appreciation. Today is the last day the north bay fire victims can file for Disaster Unemployment assistance from the state. It covers workers and the self employed who were physically injured in the fires or if there business was damaged. This applies to eight counties affected by the october wildfires including napa county, sonoma and lake as well. Eligible workers can get benefits of up to 450 per week for six months. The Pittsburgh City council will vote today on whether or not to allow police to oversee a network of security cameras across the east bay. It is a response to the highway shootings over the past two years. The freeway Security Network stretches from highway 80 in richmond to highway 4 in antioch and includes the shot spotter gun fire detection system. Several surveillance cameras as well as license plate readers. Police are being asked to operate the network because they have established city cameras. Since 2015 there have been more than 100 bay area freeway shootings. San ramon Police Need Help finding whoever is responsible for firing flare guns at christmas light displays outside of homes. At least five homes were targeted in one neighborhood saturday night and sunday morning. We are going to share Surveillance Video that captures one such crime. You can see someone in an older model nissan firing at the home. They fired a flare gun and when that happens the car races away from the scene. Judging by what i saw next to it, it looked to be an old nissan. A Nissan Sentra. Luckily we have dual pane windows otherwise it would have gone straight to the Christmas Tree and everything would have been on fire. The flares have only caused minor damage but police are working to capture those responsible before somebody gets hurt. They are asking anyone who recognizes the car in the Surveillance Video to give them a call right away. They have a good variety of fruits and veggies with Fresh Produce and canned goods. Families who get these boxes will get a choice of ham turkey or chicken. They have enough to provide for the 3200 families they regularly work with and anyone else who comes. One thing that they still need our toys for the toy drive. The toy donation giveaway they do every year and so far there are 10,000 toys. The goal is to collect 18,000 toys. They are 8000 short so that is why they are putting this to the community to lend them a hand. How important is this for families to have access to these toys . It is very important. We know the struggle in Silicon Valley and we want to make sure families dont have to choose between paying rent and making sure there is food on the table. This happen before 5 00 yesterday morning at the four seasons on market street. Police closed several streets trying to convince the officer to come out of his room. 90 minutes later the officer surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody. Investigators are trying to figure out why the officer fired his weapon. We know that nobody was hurt. A family outing ended in tragedy after a sixyearold boy and his father were killed at a beach in Sonoma County. It happened at Goat Rock Beach yesterday afternoon. Three children were playing in Shallow Water when a strong current swept a boy out to sea. The boys father went out in the water but he was also caught in the strong current. They were in the water for about an hour before rescuers got them to the shore. In three hours from now President Trump will unveil what is called a new America First National Security strategy. Judge Alex Kozinski announced today he will retire effective immediately. He says waging a battle against these allegations would not be good for the judiciary system. The Washington Post reported at least 15 women including court clerks and staffers accused him of inappropriately touching them or making lewd comments. Two women said he showed them pornography on his computer. The power has returned to hartsfieldjackson International Airport in atlanta and airlines are trying to get back on track after an underground electrical fire shutdown operations for 11 hours yesterday. There were no lights in the terminals including the baggage areas and waiting areas. There was no power on the runways so more than 1000 flights were canceled or diverted. Travelers were left on their own and they try to help each other. What was shocking to us is that we havent seen any Emergency Management like police or firefighters to help with traffic control. We were literally carrying old people down the escalators and carrying wheelchairs. My heart was racing because i am scared for these people. We are just random people trying to evacuate one of the largest airports or most populated airports in the world. Because this airport is so big problems can affect the entire air travel system. Hundreds of flights were out of place this morning especially on the east coast. It could take days before airlines get everything back on track. In the bay area at San Francisco International Three flights have been canceled this morning. Oakland and san jose report no cancellations today. Bart police are searching for three men behind a violent attack at the hayward bart station. Alex savidge is live from hayward bringing us more on the investigation. Reporter good morning, the search goes on for those three men behind this attack. According to police they stabbed one man and then punched the woman he was with. This happened last night inside the parking structure just beyond us at the hayward bart station. Officers were called out just before 9 30 and that is when they found the 28yearold man and woman who were the victims of the crime. They were taken to the hospital. The stab wounds are not considered lifethreatening. The woman suffered minor injuries after being hit in the face and she has been released from the hospital. The motive is unclear, but people who regularly use the train station say this kind of crime shows why it is important to stay cautious. I usually make sure my vehicle is locked and i have my belongings but i am always looking over my shoulder making sure nobody is following me or tracking me. It is frightening. Reporter bart police have a vague description of the three men responsible. We should point out there are some surveillance cameras inside this parking structure so there is a possibility there could be video that might help investigators as they try to identify the three men. Again one man was stabbed and the woman he was with was hit in the face. It sounds like both of them are expected to fully recover from their injuries. If anyone knows anything about the attack they should put in a call to the bart Police Department. Alex savidge, thank you. In San Francisco the bay area came together to honor the late mayor ed lee yesterday at a public memorial at city hall. The mayor was remembered as a humble lowkey politician whose political career was never something he set out to do. He was remembered as a man without flash who put the city first. Ed lee was a person with an infectious smile. He had a certain feeling he expressed so you wanted to work with him. Whenever i got a call from ed lee, it was always pleasant. I never thought what is he want to now . Even when he asked for things, he did it with such a charm and humanity that it was welcomed. He gave politics a good name. He gave San Francisco a good name. I am not aware of any civil servant, any elected official who has served in as many leadership and management positions in the city. Ed lees 27 years of Public Service to San Francisco are truly compelling and they are also unique. Ed lee was the first Asian American mayor of the city and he championed the technology industry, reduced unemployment and spent his second term creating more Affordable Housing for the working and middle class. Congresswoman nancy pelosi said the mayor was not always front and center at events. She remembered seeing him talking to people about the issues that impacted them. He always did it with optimism, grace and dignity. Every subject he was involved in, he smiled and connected. Whether it was housing, cutting ribbons at housing events or whatever it was. Many described ed lee as a man who did not have to be the loudest voice in the room to be heard. Lee died unexpectedly Tuesday Morning at 65 years old. It is not clear where the train was going but you can clearly see the derailment. We are continuing to follow the story bringing you the latest. Across the country the Busiest Airport in the world is working to get all operations back to normal. The lights are back on and travelers are checking in at hartsfieldjackson International Airport in atlanta. This comes after the airport lost power for 11 hours stranding 100,000 passengers. It was more than enough to disrupt flights around the country and the problems could continue. Planes and crews are getting back into place as we approach one of the busiest travel weeks of the year. Things are nearly normal at the major bay area airports only two flights were canceled. Oakland and san jose have not reported any cancellations but some flights landed much later than scheduled. Family and friends of mayor ed lee are remembering him as a great man of integrity and humility. Family and friends spoke yesterday at a public memorial inside of the city hall rotunda. He died on tuesday at a Grocery Store in San Francisco. The Memorial Service was filled with former city leaders including mayor willie brown who described the mayor as candid, diplomatic, friendly and unflappable. The memorial included mayors throughout the country. Libby schaaf, the mayor of san jose, the mayor of richmond and sacramento. They are all here because they genuinely were friendly respected and honored with ed lee. Brown talked about his sense of humor and joked ed lee told terrible jokes and did not have one good line but brown added he will always remember the goodness in ed lee. The acting mayor will take part in one of her First Official duties. She will cut the ribbon for the expansion at a housing and urban Health Center on mission street. More beds and medical services are being added to the center, in the past 10 years it has served 3000 Homeless People after they were treated and released from hospitals. Wildfires have been burning for two weeks in Santa Barbara county. Firefighters are making steady progress. The thomas fire has burned 422 square miles and crews have 845 contained which is up 5 from yesterday. For the first time in one week the burn area did not expand overnight. 18,000 homes remain in danger. Fire crews are catching a bit of a break after winds died down yesterday and are not picking up until wednesday. They are hoping to get a better handle on the flames. Firefighters gathered to say goodbye to one of their own who was killed last week telling the thomas fire. This is the procession bringing the body of cal fire engineer cory iverson back to his home in san diego. The procession gave people a chance to come on the highway and pay respects. Many overpasses were crowded with people waving flags and holding banners in appreciation. The Pittsburgh City council will vote on whether to allow police to oversee a network of security cameras across the east bay in response to highway shootings. The freeway Security Network stretches from 80 in richmond to highway 4 in antioch. It includes the shot spotter detection system and license plate readers. Police are being asked to operate the network because they have monitor city cameras that are being monitored. A group of bay Area Business leaders are proposing ideas to ease traffic on bay area roadways. It is the Bay Area Council the Silicon Valley Leadership Group and a think tank group. Some of the ideas include a mega tax measure to expand bart and Ferry Service and to possibly add a second tube for bart. They may use autonomous buses that have their own lanes. The proposed changes could cost 100 billion. The average commuter spends 30 hours per year stuck in traffic. The dow has done something it has never done in history. Twitter is cracking down on hateful content, the company will be enforcing new rules targeting accounts affiliated with hate groups. Twitter will penalize accounts including violent images and hate speech. Last month the company was criticized for verifying users who promote hate speech including a man who organized the rally in charlottesville last summer that ended in the death of a counter protester. This was tweeted out by the Washington State department of transportation. The Pierce County Sheriffs Department says there are injuries and casualties reported. Amtrak has not said anything about the number of injuries resulting from the derailment. They have said amtrak is aware of an incident with the train 501 Cascade Service from seattle to portland. The Pierce County Sheriffs Office says that injuries and even casualties are reported so that is an update over the last couple of minutes. The numbers to come on that. The San Jose City is among the first statewide to get a permit to sell Recreational Marijuana. Do you think Silicon Valley will be the new home of marijuana in the bay area . Other large cities like oakland and San Francisco are also preparing. We have a set of regulations in place today that have been working very well to keep the sales out of neighborhoods and away from schools and daycare centers. I think using the tools that we have have been effective in reducing the number of dispensaries. Now we have 17. So when it comes to the Police Department, you guys had a pretty Successful Academy last week graduating 50 officers, are you happy with the staffing and talk about the training that these officers are now getting that other classes werent getting in previous years. We are certainly thrilled to see those officers coming through it was a full academy and we have added about 150 this year. Some are returning from other cities coming back home to san jose which is great news for san jose. Certainly we have a lot of work to do to rebuild but we are rebuilding in the image of what the chief and many others have been pushing for which is a 21st Century Force of police. This is a group that is more technologically agile. Certainly more sensitive to concerns in the Community Around use of force. These are folks who will be very well trained around de escalation of violence and they will have body cameras out in the field. Lets talk about the neighborhoods in your city. You guys are making an announcement about making improvements for a lot of neighborhoods. What is the announcement . Forgive me, you are referring to what . For the beautify projects. Yes, this is something from several months ago. This is part of a larger initiative. What we are announcing this week is the grant to 72 neighborhood associations. We have offered small grants to help stimulate communities to come together and volunteers can take neglected corners of the city and transform them into Community Gardens or to paint murals. We want to bring people together to beautify the city and to clean up the city. We have seen thousands of volunteers coming out as part of the beautify san jose event and we are kicking in more resources. We know that we have a lot of work to do. Is there a lot of interest in regards to people getting the grant money . Not only have we had a lot of neighborhood groups and schools apply, but it has encouraged folks to form neighborhood associations in their own communities so people are coming together recognizing there is an opportunity to lift up the neighborhood. We want to encourage more. The money is one piece of something that is much larger which is an effort for people to take back our public space in san jose. At least five homes were targeted in one neighborhood saturday night and early sunday. Surveillance cameras captured one crime in progress.
