The east bay express says the leader of an oakland counseling school is being sued by six women accused of coercing them into tabbing drugs and sexually assaulting them. He ran the counseling institute, assuring patients that he could help them overcome past sexual trauma. The case has led to a criminal investigation by the Oakland Police department. We reached out to his attorney who sent us the following statement here. Mr. Bearman denies the accusation that he has engaged in any instance of Sexual Activity during his time at interchange or at any other point in his life. He has never referred to himself as a licensed therapist during his time at interchange or at any other point. As these allegations may form the basis of legal action, he has no further comment to make at this time. We are joined this morning by the reporter who broke the story, scott morris, with the east bay express. Welcome. Thanks for coming in. Thanks for having me. How did you first hear about this . Were you approached by some of the alleged victims in the case. Yes. The east bay express received a tip about it. We started asking around and researching the school. Because i had never heard of it at the time. Eventually aerial clark who is quoted in my story reached out to me. We got to talking. And once eventually her lawyers contacted me and invited me for a meeting. From there we set up interviews and really got the story moving. It has to move from ai he said she said. He is now denying the charges. You said the witnesses stories, theyre all sort of painting the same picture. Yeah. We talk today a lot of people that were involved in interchange. And they tell a pretty everyone tells a very similar story. You know, these things keep coming up again and again. He is using this particular drug that they say that, you know, he didnt like using condoms, that he didnt like so that he would, you know, after counseling sessions, he would he would counsel them on their trauma at the end of it. Once they were crying, he would assault them. The stories match up. There are five different victim thats have come forward and are represented in a lawsuit there. Are 12 other plaintiffs in the lawsuit as well. I thought it was interesting because the Facebook Post that he made, it has since been taken down. But it sounded like he was admitting guilt. Talk about that. Well, he does seem to admit that he didnt obtain in sexual relationships. He talked privately and admitted to even worse things. They were surprised when the Facebook Post came out and it actually stopped short of admitting those things. Perhaps because he knew there may be an investigation. Have they had any contact with mr. Bearman himself . Have you approached him or his lawyer. We received the same statement that you did. What about police in regards to the investigation . Compared to when these when these accusations or incidents occurred to when Oakland Police got involved. Did anyone get involved after you contacted them or were they aware of these alleged incidents taking place earlier. They had been meeting with the victims at the time that i started talking to them. The Oakland Police had been. Oakland police, you know, wouldnt usually disclose much about an investigation about this. So most of this is coming to me from the victims. But they said they have been meeting with the Oakland Police department. And the interchange has since closed. Do they know where he is . Are they watching, surveillance, so he doesnt leave the area while the investigation continues. Im not sure where he is. So what happens next . It is hard to say. It could be a long process. The lawsuit was just filed on friday. Oakland police are investigating. So we will see. Okay. Scott morris, east bay express. We appreciate your time. Thank you for coming in. Coming up on mornings on 2 the 9, are you worried about picking the perfect sport for your child. Up next, results of a new study that says playing multiple sports might actually be more beneficial in the long run. Welcome back to mornings on 2 the 9. Taking a quick look at wall street this morning. Theyve been up all day. No big change. The dow jones up. The nasdaq and s p 500 is up slightly. The big news is disney buying a lot of assets from 21st century fox. Both of those stocks are up. A new study is reaffirming why it is a good idea for Young Athletes to play multiple youth sports. It found among elite athletes those who played multiple sports in high school had fewer injuries and longer careers than those that centered on one sport. Dr. Panya joins us. Thank you for coming in. Im interested in this topic. Having children myself who do multiple sports. The one positive of playing one sport down the road is just becoming kind of more perfecting it, building confidence. And then avoiding injury in the second or third sport that really isnt his or her focus. Correct. And im wrong, i guess. Yes. Absolutely. So one of the things were seeing a lot more is parents want their kids to be these elite athletes. They say lets play one sport at a young age. What were finding is there an increased risk of injury with that. The thing that we dont know is how that transferred over to elite athletes. Thats what the sudden ewas looking at. A lot of the elite athletes, i can think of a lot of professional players, they play pro sports but you find out they played another sport or two sports in high school. He went on to play football. But he played baseball and basketball. They play a lot of sports, not just one. Those that are more successful usually play multiple the sports and had better careers. More games played, less injuries. Is that because of the muscle groups. One muscle group is used primarily in one sport. Maybe another sport uses a different part of the body. So your body is all around fit. Exactly. And not wearing down the same muscles and again and again and again. Did you look at ballet and yoga to take along with some of the sports. Youre working these different muscles and strengthening the muscles around your joints. Is that part of the reasoning and does that lead to a healthy yes, sir career . Absolutely. I think in general whether youre doing these explosive reports, total body conditioning is lost. That gets lost in the young kids who are doing the Skill Based Development sports. By doing total body conditioning, theyre less likely to get injured. I have two teenagers. One is a dancer and one is a competition cheerleader. Trying to juggle more than one sport with school is the hard part. Maybe conditioning can help. Absolutely. There are other ways to build that into your system without doing the organized thing throughout the year. In one report that i read, 32 of first round picks are multi sport athletes. There you go. Why did you focus in on the nba athletes. There is a lot of information out there on the first round draft picks, especially on social media. In football you have the traumatic injury. It is not relate today multiple sports. The nba is a little less violent and you can track overuse injuries. Did you find that the nba athletes who grew up playing the one sport, the basketball, kind of regret that now . I think maybe not all of them, but did you run across that in some of them. We saw athletes that wished they had played multiple sports. Looking back at what they said in the press, et cetera. That trend is creeping down into the youth sports culture. I always wanted to ask, what is the major sport that is the least amount the least likely for you to get an injury. Football is not the one. Maybe basketball is it. Sports like basketball. But also not Impact Sports like swimming and tennis. Something that doesnt involve explosive activities are the ones that we see the least amount of injuries in. Some of these guys have it built in. You cant go skiing. Bumgarner was out on his dirt bike and got hurt. Sore subject there, pam. I know. I mean, could this lead to at least allowing them to do other things but within parameters. Absolutely. I think so. Were getting more and more Research Showing the benefits of that. If the teams want to keep their athletes for a longer period of time of time, they will incorporate it in. When should a child start to focus on one sport then, in your opinion . Is it freshman year in high school . Sophomore . College. I think starting later in high school. It gets harder and harder because it is hard to manage the time. We have to be realistic. Later in high school is a good time. If youre hoping for a scholarship, you need to focus at some point. I found the busier i was, i was busy all year round playing multiple sports, the better my grades were. You get more done. He played football. Yeah. Track. Cut from the Basketball Team as i should have been. Doctor, thank you for the sudden e. Thank you for coming in and talking about it.
