Learning of his death early yesterday morning. He leaves a huge construction boom, a huge tech boom. San francisco was just coming out of the recession when he took office in the beginning part of 2011. As we take you to the mayors second home, San Francisco city hall glittering in the sun, you see the memorial has been set up on the front steps of that beautiful building. So many changes happening on the second floor of the building. Thats where the Mayors Office is. And thats where we find a flag at halfstaff in honor of mayor ed lee. Welcome to the 9 here. Mike, i know you take the newspaper every morning. Youre Old Fashioned that way. Right in the driveway. Im glad you brought this in. We have a picture of the mayor. It is not one of those super welllit portraits where you can tell he was taken to the studio. The editor of the chronicle said this is how the mayor was every single day, out and about, always smiling. Maybe not looking perfect all the time. That was part of his charm. If i could bring in a tight picture of it. It has the mayors name edwin lee. And you see the chinese characters there. The chronicles editor cant recall if the chronicle has ever used chinese characters on the front page. She felt it was a fitting tribute to the man who broke the barrier for chinese americans. You talk about the construction, the tech boom. Not everyone necessarily agrees with all of the changes in San Francisco. Long time san franciscans. But something that london breed said at the News Conference yesterday at city hall stuck with me. Since he took office, he created 140,000 jobs there in San Francisco. Really a voice for the overlooked and just kind of that profound sense of community. Despite the changes in his eyes thanksgivings one Small Community in a big city. We were talking about this. This adds a little bit of uncertainty as to what will happen next. Will london breed, you know, remain as the mayor . As you heard Dennis Herrera say the board of supervisors doesnt have to do anything. Right. You can just stay there. For the next six months. Or will people jump into the special election . It is unclear what will happen. We are watching what is happening inside San Francisco city hall. I give this back to you. It is a special one. I collect, you know, front pages for big events, whether they are sad ones like this or memorable ones like a giants parade or a 49ers super bowl. As we mentioned the former president of the board of supervisors london breed is now the acting mayor of San Francisco. She becomes the first African American female mayor. She will hold the job until june, unless as sal mentioned, the board of supervisors decides to replace her with someone else. Breed has been the president of the board of supervisors since 2015. Widely expected to run for mayor after mayor ed lees term ended. Yesterday she asked for citys support. Our citys values have never been more important. And in the months ahead, lets carry on in mayor lees honor. A special election will be held june 5th of next year. The winner of that will finish out ed lees term, which ends in january of 2020. Then there will be that regularly scheduled mayors election that will be set for november of 2019. 11 people have already filed paperwork for the general election. Today for the first time london breed will be attending events as the citys acting mayor. Christien kafton is at city hall with a look at what breed will be doing. Good morning, christien. Reporter yeah. Good morning. If you take a look here, you see the memorial here. A lot of people as they go into city hall this morning have been stopping by, reflecting, remembering ed lee as they go on into the office. As you said, london breed getting ready to start her first full day as the new acting mayor of San Francisco. Her day includes a lot of responsibilities. Apparently she will be meeting later on today with the police chief to discuss an issue about gun buyback program. We can also tell you that she was there at the board of supervisors meeting where yesterday where the board of supervisors approved some of the things that were on mayor lees wish list, including declaring a citywide emergency on homelessness and fast tracking construction for shelters for the homeless. She spoke at the board of supervisors meeting and talked about the magnitude of the role she steps into and the shoes she must fill. Mayor lee lived a life of service. He developed early on a profound sense of community and a commitment to helping others. Reporter yeah. We talked a moment ago about about people reflecting on this memorial here. Supervisor mark ferrell just walking into work here. I know it is a shock. Really an opportunity for everyone to reflect on how the city goes back to business as usual at a time when it really cant be business as usual. Yeah. It cant be. This is so fresh in everyones minds. You know, obviously it is a city government. Were going to function. We have plans in place. And were up and running. And it is important that the San Francisco residents know that. At this same time, this is a time to mourn the loss of someone who was incredibly important to the city of San Francisco. Our mayor. And we need to grief. We need to be able to mourn that process. And, you know, at the right time move on. But things are functioning of course. They will always do so in the city of San Francisco. But it is a very sad tight time for our city. Reporter thank you for stopping. I know you were completely unprepared for that. Thank you for offering insight into that. You said what a lot of people are feeling, a sense of grief and loss and getting back to business as soon as possible. Thank you, christien. Doug jones defeated roy moore in the special senate race. Alabama has been at a crossroads. We have been at crossroads in the past. And unfortunately we have usually taken the wrong fork. Tonight, ladies and gentlemen, you took the right road. [cheering and applause] it was a close race. And moore has not yet conceded. But it seems clear the Sexual Misconduct allegations against moore had an impact on this election. Dirty policy is what it was. Reporter plenty of blame among republicans this morning following a surprise victory by democrats in deep red alabama. Doug jones won the special election after allegations of Sexual Misconduct by roy moore who was endorsed by President Trump, prompting a push by republicans who say came too late. This race came down to very few votes. So i do put blame on a lot of folks that pulled out their support and then came back in late. Reporter the loss can make it more difficult for republicans to act on their legislative agenda. The president says his support for moore in the last weeks of the campaign was smart politics. Tweeting in part, the reason i originally endorsed Luther Strange and his numbers went up mightedly is i said roy moore would not be able to win the general election. I was right. Meanwhile democratic lawmakers conyers and al franken are preparing to step down following their own Sexual Misconduct scandals. Tina smith will take al frankens place who will focus more on policy than politics. I will do my best to earn minnesotans support. I believe the way to do that is by being the best senator that i can be. There is a renewed push for congress to investigate the Sexual Misconduct allegations against President Trump. With more than 100 democratic lawmakers asking the House Oversight committee to schedule hearings. Ktvu fox 2 news. Even though President Trump campaigned for roy moore, he congratulated doug jones on his victory, tweeting, congratulations to doug jones on a hard fought victory. The writein votes played a big factor but a win is a win. The people of alabama are great and the republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends. Were joined this morning by joe garofoli of the San Francisco chronicle. Welcome back. Always fun to be here. Roy moore lost because of the allegations or President Trump campaigning for him. Victory has a thousand mothers. Theres a lot of things to attribute this to. Number one, you cant divorce the moment were in, the me too moment and the stuff that roy moore was accused of. This is crazy stuff happening. And so that is obviously the first thing. The other thing we cannot overlook is that the turnout of africanamerican voters which democrats had a hard time doing in 2016. Roughly 30 of the turnout was africanamerican. Something like 95 of them voted for doug jones. We have that. We have the writein votes. Richard shelby. 22,000. Yeah. About 2 . In terms of writein votes is astronomical. The margin of victory, about 2 . As the president tweeted there. There is a lot of out of state money coming in for doug jones. 10million over a sixweek period, which is, again, off the charts. Especially for alabama. That allowed him to put up a lot of tv ads. 86 of the ads that alabama saw over the last few weeks was pro jones or antimoore. If youre not comfortable with roy moore, write in someone else. Republicans were not energized baud of the candidate and stayed home. Do you think that had an effect. Oh, yeah. Especially in the suburban areas where the moderate republicans where there is a lions share of the white vote but they were just uncomfortable with the allegations. Im either not going to vote or im going to write somebody in. Is this just one state in the red Southern States to come . Because it had it is a big one. Oh, it is a very, very unusual victory. It is hard to rely indicate all of these factors. How many roy moores are there out there . And jones took advantage of it. Very well organized campaign. They used a lot of good social media and they had a lot of help and money. That goes back to my first question and you talked about the me too movement. This may have been more of a reason for the victory for the democratic candidate because this movement is starting to reshape politics. It is. Not just people in congress already. Right. But maybe in elections next year and the mid terms and in 2020 maybe. We will see. We will see. And it has to keep going. And im sure there are more allegations to come out. There seems to be one every day. It has the potential to carry on. But you can that is one thing. I stull still have to have the organization and the candidate. Doug jones was a decent candidate. A fairly spotless records and not a crazy lefty in alabama. The president said we need better republican candidates down the road. The president is 02. He endorsed Luther Strange in the primary and roy moore here. He was 02 here. He can spin it however the hell he wants in his tweets. But, you know, he backed the loser twice here. Can we talk about the phrase values voters. Typically associated with older, white, perhaps evangelical. Perhaps not in this race as far as africanamerican women support specifically. Yeah. Talk about the dynamics of who voted for him. Who voted for him were africanamerican voters, the most reliable democratic voters and they turned out exactly as of their population. 30 of alabama is African American. People in big cities voted. Younger people voted. Younger people voted but the democrats definitely need to up that game a little bit. They cant lose this percentage of the white vote in the south. The white vote definitely went predominantly for the republicans here. The democrats have to make inroad theres. Before we go, what do you think about the recount call by rye moore. Roy moore will be writing that check out of his own checkbook because alabamas secretary of state said were not paying for it. If it is. 5 or below, the state pays for it. Over that, it is on your own dime. Is he making his own decisions or still listening to steve bannon. Steve bannon is loser number two there. It is the choice between trump and nullification. I dont know what nullification means. It is biblical almost. But bannons value is definitely on the wane. Thank you, joe. Following the alabama election we turned to you to the question of the day and asked do you think the country has hit a turning point where sexual allegations are a turning point. 24 say no. 76 say yes. The change will come when humans gain consciousness. Another viewer says, allegations do not equal guilt. Ever hear of due process. Jwm says if by action you mean eliminating due process, no. If you mean making departments, then yes. Allegations are fully investigated. Keep talking with us through twitter and taking the ktvu poll. We will share more responses at 9 30. Coming up, a highspeed police chase on the peninsula ended just outside of a country club. We will tell you how many people were arrested and how many got away. Coming up, many kids are asking for new phones or tablets for the holidays. We will talk live with the author of wired child about how to manage battles that you might be having over screen time. Well, as the holidays approach, your children might be asking you for the newest smart phone or tablet or whatever. With the kids out of school for about two weeks, a lot more downtime to spend on the screens. How do you monitor their use and keep them from becoming addicted. Richard freed is the author of wired child and joins us live in the studio this morning. Maybe it seems to me that some parents dont realize or recognize that the kids are pulling away from them. That these devices im guilty. We will pull it out at a restaurant for ten minutes. And there is no conversation. You know. Were really theyre being pulled away from me. It is the device. Were told that the devices bring us closer as a family. Connect with your kids. What we dont realize is kids get obsessed with them and live their lives out in their room. Oftentimes at the expense of family. There is a big debate at our school. Last year my big boy was in second grade and there was a second grader who had her moms old cell phone. There s. There a perfect age to start . I know it is individual. Gauge that for me. I wish there was a perfect age to get kids a smart phone. Any time that you need to get your kids a basic phone to be in touch with them, that is fine. Youre doing that for safety. A smart phone is really we dont have a right age for that. Unfortunately what were seeing in the last few weeks is any age we get a kid a smart phone, it pulls them away from family. It puts them at risk for depression and it puts them at risk for not doing as well in school. One of the things that you mentioned because i have heard you speak to parents before, we are creating a society of boys, girls too but more so boys that end up stuck in their room playing video games on moms couch until theyre 30. This wasnt a problem. This may reach where kids dont even get jobs because theyre so addicted. It is very different for boys and girls. Boys are drawn more to gaming. Youre right. We have a generation of boys that are not going off to college. 57 of College Admissions are girls. 43 are boys. Then we have recent Economic Research showing that boys are gaming away and not going off and getting jobs. Girls are more attracted to smart phones, social media. That is what is pulling them into their rooms. They are more at risk for depression. So you talk about social media. Some people may interrupt that as socialization. Im socializing through social media. Go to the mall with me. Yeah. What do you see in the future and how that affects our children, the earlier they get on these devices. What is so interesting is social media, smart phones are sold to us to connect with us. But they are pulling kids apart. One of the things that were really seeing is we have kids who get more lonely when they actually get these devices because theres this fear of missing out. Kids just scroll through these pages of kids looking like theyre having a great time without them. So they start to turn against themselves, feel empty and get depressed. At our house we have two boys, 7 and a half and nine. In the past few weeks we introduced screen time to them. We held off as long as we could. Good for you. When 20 minutes dings, one of them freaks when we take away the ipad. How can we make that release a little less distressing for all of us . That is such a good question. All of the parents that i work with, when i go talk at schools, thats what theyre telling me. The devices are so powerful, increasingly built by psychologists, increasingly built by neuro scientists working towards vulnerabilities. You have game designers who say my job is to take every single voluntary activity that a person has and pull that away and put them on the game. It is really tough. I like your idea of doing your best to say, here is the limit. If its not working out, like like kids some kids push back in my practice in a really difficult sort of way. We have ive got parents calling the police when kids get a little were not there. It really is the companys fault. Their goal is to get children addicted. And to add to that, the people who run these companies, the parents, the steve jobs of the world, they make this technology but they dont allow their own kids to use it. When i talk with parents and go talk around the country, i say, i want you to parent like a tech exec. We see bill and Melinda Gates who did not get their kids smart phones until 14 years of age. If more parents did that, kids would be less depressed and doing better in school. So much to talk about. Thank you for joining us. Keep this in mind as your kids asking for those things for the holidays. We will be right back. Nice little jam to come in. Mornings on 2 the 9. Thank you for watching. All morning long weve had clear skies. Now were getting a little bit of fog as i bring in steve. I dont know what this is. Smoke. Smoke. From down south. Going into parts of the coast. A little bit of fog. But most of that is smoke. We are seeing some of that. The visibility satellite showed that. The smoke is in. Now to the east. I think that fog will burn off quick. A little made it in. It is also cold. William diaz says it is cold, dude. Sincerely freezing in sf. You know, the folks in sf, it is cold. In september, it is too hot. Now it is too hot. Hard audience there. There were low 40s in oakland this morning. A couple of 41 degree readings. Around the bay, richmond made it down to 40. Now were slowly warming up with 40s and 50s. The bibbing news was the 20s from north to south. There were being 20s. Even in the east bay. Now were starting to see more 30s and 40s. Geyserville, 25. Sebastopol, 26. Kenwood, 26. Hillsberg, 29. Even 20s in the santa cruz mountains. This is called a rex block pattern. Everything rainwise is deflected north. There is a low towards baja that is cut off from everything. This kind of a pattern you can see it is off shore. The wind goes land to sea. Thats exactly what were getting. Some of the Higher Elevations you can get a good gust at the surface. When you get this kind of a pattern, the coast is the place to be for the warmer temps. Half moon bay is already 57. Yet 30s for others. Much of bodega bay down to santa cruz, that will be the warm y. Look at ventura county. Even though the wind speeds are not as strong, it is really dry down there. Thats where some of the smoke from the thomas fire continues to work its way in. We dont see any rain for a while. Layers. Cold in the morning and then in the afternoon taking the vacet off. Except maybe a pickup in the breeze, i dont see any rain right now. Well, i hope that changes, steve. I think we will have to wait until january to be honest with you. Thank you, steve. Thank you.
